  • Flooding from the historic storms that swept across the United States this year left both houses and cars underwater. One of those vehicles was caught up during Hurricane Ida in a South Orange, New Jersey, parking lot in September, and is now filled with smelly mold. But experts warn after every major flood, thousands of vehicles like this one are cleaned up and resold to unsuspecting buyers. Joyce Darden, 80, says it happened to her used car, which she bought from Enterprise Car Sales for $17,000.

Easy to wash (meaning: remove) the flood designation from a vehicle title. Many states, mostly down south, will re-title a purchased car with no mention anywhere of flood damage. Then they have a local shop clean up the car; maybe even replace certain tell-tale components such as carpets, then send the car to auction, where local corner-lot used car sales pick it up and put it on their lot as a "clean" car. Maybe they know it's now-hidden history, or maybe not.

Some body shops will take a car that had airbags deployed, repair the body damage but not replace the airbags without disclosing it. Everything seemed fine with it except it was somewhat underpriced for being so new and few miles and it had this strong funky mildew-type odor inside the cabin. All the carpets were completely covered in plastic and the dealer said the smell and plastic was from them just thoroughly cleaning it. I concluded it was too good to be true and that the car had obviously been flooded and it had not been reported to carfax and they were lying to me. I walked away immediately. This happened to me. I don't know how the dealership was able to get it to the sales floor, but they did. My tell-tale sign was extensive engine trouble; a busted air-conditioner, after what i thought was a maintenance repair; the car radio picks up AM channels only; some of the console lights flicker; finally, a small puddle of water, on the driver's side, and within a few days, the water had swelled to the seats, almost. The dealer, as well as the certified-mechanics, who performed extensive (expensive) work on my car, could have had the decency to let me know what I was dealing with, to make an informed, decision about keeping that car or buying another one.
I only put-out good, because I want good to come back to me. My conscience would bother me, if I knowingly, misled someone. Sadly, some people's moral compass, leans a different way.
I have had this car for over five years, and I intend to have it for at least another five years.
Incidentally, the dealer wants me to now, put the repairs they performed, under warranty. Their unscrupulous, deception, won't allow me to contact them to inquire about what that even means (I want to call them out, but I digress).
