Why Do I Need A Passport To Travel?

  • For the vast majority of international travelers, a passport is a necessity. But why?

If I were going out of the country - let’s say to sunny Bolivia - my whole trip would have hinged on one vital thing: my passport. But what is this thing, exactly? Why do I need it to travel?
The first question has a pretty clear-cut answer. A passport is a document issued by a government that verifies your identity and gives you the right to travel under its protection.
The word “passport” comes from “passeport” - a Middle French phrase from around the 1500s. However, the idea of a passport is positively ancient. You can find evidence of state-sponsored travel documents dating from as far back as 450 BCE.
Since about the 1980s, most passports have been regulated by a department of the United Nations called the International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO.
So why do you need one? Ultimately it goes down to proof of nationality. For example, let’s say I was caught up in a vast conspiracy and had to travel to the Vatican. That happens, right?
Anyhow, I’m flying into Italy and I have to present some sort of proof that I’m really coming from where I say I’m coming from. Otherwise, any old super villain with a plausible Yankee accent could stroll off the runway pretending to be an American, right?
So possessing a passport is like having your country of origin vouch for you, assuring other nations that you are in fact the person you say you are.
Keep in mind, however, that possession of a valid passport alone doesn’t guarantee your entrance. Countries allow visitors at their own discretion, which means that, in theory, they can refuse entry to pretty much anyone, at any time.
So, even if you have a valid passport, make sure to check the entry policies of the country you’re visiting BEFORE you hop on the plane.
And not everyone’s happy with the passport system. In “The Invention of the Passport”, Professor John Torpey argues that it is inherently a monopoly of the state, meaning a private company like, say, HowStuffWorks, couldn’t just slap my mug in a little book and send me off to Japan. Religious organizations can’t do this, either.
Not only do countries control the passport system, but the issuing country can revoke your passport at any time. In clear terms, this system is about as “big government” as you can get.
So there you have it. In theory, almost every single person on the globe needs a passport, or some sort of official document, to travel. This “official document” could be something for an individual, or it could be an agreement between specific countries. At one point or another, there’s no other way to legally travel. Virtually everyone needs something like this.
Ahh - but… did you notice how I said “almost every person” and “virtually everyone?”
That’s right, ladies and gentlemen. There is one person in the world who can travel freely and legally without a passport or other documents. And that person is… Paul, could we get a drumroll please?
THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND! True story. British passports are issued in the name of the Queen; therefore it’s not necessary for her to have one. The rest of the family has to possess a passport, though. Even the princes, William and Harry.

I have a german passport and grew up living in Indonesia, Iran, England and India. I still remember when I played for a football (or soccer) club in India and we were invited to participate in a tournament in Singapore. Since I was the only german citizen in our team, literally everyone had to apply for a visa in advance except for me, because german citizens enjoy a very high travel freedom and barely have to worry about visa issues when travelling somewhere.
I could just book a ticket to Thailand for fun and spontaneously fly there, which citizens from Pakistan or Afghanistan for example can't do because they require a visa first^^

I thought passports were required so that we could get back into the country. Most countries barely glance at my passport upon entry. When I return to the U.S. I spend what feels like an eternity while U.S. customs goes over it.

I'm sure that you must feel like you're being interrogated and you almost have to prove who you are even when you show your passport to the US. It's not always the best feeling to feel like you're a criminal coming back to the country that you live in and that you are from.

As the man said, a passport is a document from your home Country that
      #1 verifies who you are
#2 asks the host country to allow you in
#3 upon return to your home country, verifies who you are, and that you can legally re-enter the country...

Your country didn't want to be part of the Shengen Area, which would mean you would never have to do that, but it would also mean the same back for other nationals of the EU coming into Britain, but your country isn't the only one that decided that such as: Ireland, Cyprus, and a couple of others.

I have two passports! One of the US and one of Brazil. The only issue I really get is when I have to renew the Brazilian one while living in the States. Rather than just filling a form and paying the fee via mail like you do with the American passport, you have to go to the closest Brazilian consulate (most likely the one in your state's capital) and request a renewal, which they will then give you every excuse in the book to prevent you from renewing it.

So could people still refuse the Queen's entry to their country?

    • @itsalongday
      @itsalongday 5 лет назад +5

Yes, she has no power in most countries. They would let her enter, though, because she is the Queen: not likely to commit a crime, get a job in that country or go into hiding.
Usually she also does not just come up to the border control and try to enter but arrives after everything is planned, so the lack of passport should not be an issue.

Actually there are several ways to travel without a passport. When military people are travel by commercial means they are not required to possess, and in some instances they may be chastised for using a personal passport if they are traveling for military business; they carry travel orders, that accompanied by their military ID works in the place of a passport. I believe this is consistent with non-military Federal Government employees as well.

Does the president have to have a passport? The other question I have is even though the queen doesn't have to have a passport to get back into England would she have to have a passport to get into another country? Could another country just say sorry you need a passport or we're not letting you in? If this is the case and the queen does not need a passport and she can fly to any country in the world no matter what the country is then this would really state that the queen is the most powerful person in the world I know they say that the u.s. president is the most powerful person in the world but that would technically mean the queen is.

That's technically incorrect. Heads of state need one too. But since there are 16 countries where she is the Head of state. she can go there anytime without giving any reason. And anywhere else she travels only as state guest at invitation of host government so no passport is needed. But if say she had decided to go to address the UNGA in New York. She might need to apply for a US visa like every other head of state.

The country you are traveling to says "you'll need a visa from me to be allowed in", while others just don't have that kind of time if you are traveling to it 90 days or less (some allow more or less time) if more, they'll more than likely ask that you get a visa from them as you have overstayed you welcome otherwise.

Does anyone now if The Vatican or Palestine issue passports? As they are political entities, but are not internationally recognized by the UN as member states (only as permanent observer states), I wonder if they issue their own passports, or if they carry passports issued by Italy and Israel respectively.

Yes, the Vatican does issue passports to all its citizens, however you are confusing the Holy See (the organization) with Vatican City (the country) they are two different but complementary things. As for Palpetine I'm not sure, but I have a feeling they do.

+AL_ muharb Passports identify where you come from. Visa identify permission to enter a specific country. Passports act like visas when you are traveling between nations that have an agreement making them equivalent.

    • @RockysLife

      Ella Taylor
Let’s say you use fraud such as a fake marriage to gain that passport.
Or let’s say I use my brothers identity because he doesn’t have a criminal record to gain a passport
      Or
Maybe I break the laws of a country, if that country doesn’t allow dual nationality (Japan) and I go get another passport let’s say a German passport and I don’t go back to Japan to renounce my Japanese citizenship
      And they find out
      They’ll probably revoke my passport

That's what embassies are for...... I think..... not sure..... I know they do emergency passports like if u lose ur passport. BTW, most countries won't let u in if ur passports is expiring in 6 months,

    • @RockysLife
      @RockysLife 6 лет назад

552861904 Indi a lot of countries need you to to have a passport that has X amount of time on it before expiry (usually 3-6 months, 6 months is more common)
But if you find yourself in that situation as the comment above said that’s when you go to your embassy in that country
Don’t do what I did though and get your passport stolen only to realise that country doesn’t have your home contrived embassy.. oh what a nightmare that was..
