I’m 62 (in 2022). I had heard Keep Yourself Alive for the first time on our local college radio station. I brought the album home and played it over and over. I was mesmerized by the whole album and lived other tracks line Jesus, Liar and Son and Daughter. I love the hard driving in your face rock guitar with the harmonizing vocals. It’s my favorite Queen album. However I lost interest when Queen became a radio favorite. I’m not a contrarian but the more theatrical Muscovy that Freddie was so fond of dud nothing for me. But when I hear Keep Yourself Alive on my playlist, I still have to crank it up to 11. Such a great rocking sound…hell yeah

This is one of my favorite Queen songs. For their first single, it was a great way for the band to get started. It's funny that critical reception at the time was pretty mediocre. The common criticism was that the song "took too long to happen." Compared to some of their other material, this does feel pretty basic, but basic isn't bad. I love it.

Queen, Queen 11, Sheer Heart Attack, A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, News of the World and Jazz all stated "no synthesisers".. It was on "The Game" in 1980 that they used one for the first time.. The first thing heard on the album is a synth on "Play the Game".

Sara Stich Well, remember they weren’t going to release Another One Bites the Dust as a single at all until Michael Jackson insisted. And they didn’t think Don’t Stop Me Now was anything special. Sometimes it can take a while for the true greatness of some songs to emerge. And huge hits can age really badly, (not Queen’s, tho).

This debut from Queen was meant to have been a showcase for their abilities and style but the long intro meant radio eejits didn't want to play the song, and this being pre-video days the song passed people by.

This is a really fun jam song. Something to play in the car. Queen was somewhat known as an early metal band. They generally get a lot of respect from the metal community. This song really grows on you the more you hear it. It was written by Brian when he was in high school, apparently he meant for the song to be somewhat more cynical. But when Freddie sang the song he interpreted it as a more fun song. Nice reaction and analysis, as always guys!

Not written by Freddie! Written by Brian (hence the strength of the guitar) back when they were Smile! Which means, like Doing Alright, it wasn’t written with Fred in mind, and Brian has said that Freddie’s singing changed the tone from something much more ironic to something a little more ...honest and earnest I suppose. Which seems to characterize a lot of Fred’s influence on Brian in general, and shows how stabilizing he was against Brian’s depression.

  • @Marcus-Oh-really-yes

Nice job! Another possible Queen song to react to is a medley of "Bicycle Race"/"Fat-Bottomed Girls" from 1978. They were the A and B sides of the same 45 record, and many radio stations back in the day used to play them back to back. Both are fun and bordering on silly. I'd go with an audio track that has both songs. (The actual promo video for "Bicycle Race" has naked women riding 10-speeds, and you probably want to keep your channel relatively clean. :-) )... And if you ever want to rock out to a female-led band, I recommend 1976's "Magic Man" by Heart (fronted by Canadian sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson). Again, I'd go with an album track video rather than a live version so you can hear it like we used to on the radio.

Hmm...I get the idea of clearing out a few at a time because they are short, but I don’t think I would recommend those together. They are SO different and from a couple albums apart. Kind of confuses the Queen timeline. Same with a Dear Friends. For myself, Night at the Opera is one I always listen to in order, (almost) in its entirety. Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon is so much more musically interesting when you hear the songs before and after it (though Andy’s already done both of them). Andy, you need to eventually do album reviews! Queen was excellent at finding the right mix of songs, in the best order, for albums.

I’m glad we’re lingering in early Queen for the moment. It feels right. Please linger among Queen’s first three albums for a while longer. Stone Cold Crazy must surely be next? The song where Queen invents speed metal. It will put a smile on your faces, for sure.
Now, Queen’s shortest songs are almost fragments but what shards of beauty they are. How are you going to approach reviewing songs like Dear Friends, Nevermore, Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon?

Good morning Guys! I really recommend you read the lyrics - the "Keep Yourself Alive" is sarcastic. It's really quite funny. I think this one really grows on you. It's certainly one of my favs for the car, along with Now I'm Here, Stone Cold Crazy, Tie Your Mother Down, Sheer Heart Attack.
BTW: I just got Queen On Air - Collection of Queen BBC radio recordings. It is AMAZING! They would go into BBC studios and record a session which they did a lot of impro on. So it has a semi live feel. There are two different versions of Keep Yourself Alive and Liar, Ogre Battle, and an amazing version of Son and Daughter. The recording quality is so good, it feels like they're in your living room!

This is such classic Queen - it's a bit of rock, a little funk, then there's Brian's amazing riffage and a drum solo from Roger...insane 😅
My rating on most of Queen's hits will never be below a 9 - I've been *hearing* Queen since the late 70's when I was still 5-6, and just a few years later started actively listening to it. I've heard these songs so much over the years, they're ALL great - much better than ANYTHING out today. **A N Y T H I N G**.
Yeah, I like some better than others ("Seven Seas of Rhye" and "Don't Stop Me Now" are probably tied for #1 just because of how up tempo they are - THOSE are 10's for me), but yeah, 9+ even for songs like "You're My Best Friend" which I kinda have to be in the mood to listen to, but if it comes on, I'll listen.)
You already know what's up - Princes of the Universe 😁Next week! 🤴🏻

***"Roads to Moscow" is 1973 song by Scottish rock singer Al Stewart.
It appeared on his album Past, Present and Future, and tells the story of the German invasion of Russia during World War II,
as seen through the eyes of a Russian partisan who is described by one source as being Alexander Solzhenitsyn ***

So I'm sure someone's said something along these lines, but you guys should *absolutely* react to this live... Odeon 75' is my favourite, though Rainbow 74' is fantastic as well. I never even listen to the studio version any more, because the live performances are just on another level... they have that "something" that Andy said the song was missing.
When playing live, Queen often upped the tempo for their songs (excluding the ballad-type songs), and while I don't think it works for every song, the increase in intensity made Keep Yourself Alive a *million* times better. In both the Rainbow and Odeon performances Freddie sure as hell isn't sitting back, he is on FIRE, the whole band is rocking out, and Roger's drum solo is INSANE - way better than in the music video, if you can believe it!
(I read somewhere that Roger generally didn't like drum solos, since he finds them boring and egotistical, but I'm sure glad Queen kept the phenomenal drum solo in Keep Yourself Alive!)
