Portugal until 1975 had a capitalist dictatorship that didnt care about peoples wellbeing

    • @diogorodrigues747

The reason is quite simple, and it's called Estado Novo. Under Salazar's dictatorship there was no real investment in education because it was said that people would follow orders better if they were poor and "humble", as well as centuries of education being monopolized by the Church (that only ended in 1910). The situation was bad even before - the country reached the 20th century with a litteracy rate just above 10%, and even in 1975 almost 35% of the population couldn't read or write.
Thankfully the country essentially ended illiteracy, and now it's now under 3% (or even less). Most of those people (>99%) are really old, being over 80 years old.

If you start reading, I guarantee it will improve very quickly. I had the same issue and it pretty much disappeared in a matter of days when I started getting into reading again. It's just your brain needing to get used to the medium again, takes a bit of time though. Just make sure to read something you enjoy, it will make it easier for you.

    就中国而言,49年建国时文盲率有8成。新中国的扫盲运动才让识字率达到了5000年来最高。而且如果看看新中国,尤其农村地区是如何扫盲的,才能感受这是多艰辛的工程。

Objective point of view: India has so many national languages, it is much more difficult than China! And in many rural and backward areas, many locals over the age of 40 are not illiterate as long as they can write their names and some daily languages!
Especially women, because their parents think it's useless for girls to go to school! So to be fair, 77% is a good number for India~
