    Hi my name is Ricardo and thanks for watching my videos! I am a composer writing music for movies, TV shows and documentaries and I am living full time in my self converted campervan with a music studio running on solar power. ALL the music your hear in my vlogs I have composed and/or produced myself with all due respect to my fellow session musicians that performed on various tracks.

As for the gear, I basically just measured my equipment in the studio with a watt meter and tried to cover as much as possible with the solar and lots of guessing. I’m an amateur pianist and think the only thing preventing me from full time vanlife is not having a full sized keyboard. Cool to see that it has been done!
    Since I don’t compose or play any other instruments, my build would probably be more flexible.
    Awesome video and guitar shredding… safe travels!

    • @vancomposer

      @RSMoreno Год назад

      @@vancomposer thanks for the inspiration! I went down an internet rabbit hole, searching for keyboards in vans! Not much footage to be found though.

    • @vancomposer
      @vancomposer  Год назад

      @@RSMoreno Ah thanks, glad to hear. My desk is really just as simple plywood build. As a matter of fact doing the same in my previous studios for years. the entire desk needs a bit of a rise so your legs clear below, but that is very easy to do. And the table legs are from IKEA. Obviously in the van I had to secure it much more on the sides as well and the storage keeps it sturdy as well. There is certainly not much to no information online. You just don't see lots of people doing this, it is also such a special lifestyle that requires the right circumstances in your personal life.

      @@vancomposer Gracias por contestar!!
      Sé que ahorras mucho dinero, vives aventuras increíbles, conoces infinidad de lugares inimaginables, espectaculares además de mucha gente nueva, yo llevo mas de un año investigando sobre esto...
      Pero el tema de los ingresos es lo que necesito resolver para dar inicio, ya que es la llave mágica hacerlo realidad y que funcione de verdad y así dar inicio al proyecto y seguir adelante sin tener que regresar..!!
      A mi me surgió la idea de hacerlo porque prácticamente lo de viajar y tocar he hecho por muchos años, pero diferente, porque de una u otra manera siempre tengo que volver a casa por no tener el vehículo adecuado para pasar las noches, para dormir y seguir adelante.
      Es muy incomodo el tener que dormir en un auto o camioneta sin los aditamentos necesarios para descansar adecuadamente y no despertar con la espalda molida por la incomodidad ademas de la necesidad de usar un baño por las mañanas...jejeje
      Yo me dedico a tocar y antes viajaba de noche o de madrugada de regreso a casa hasta que un día tuve un accidente después de muchos años... Me quedé dormido y desde ahí he decidido ya dormir en el carro o en el vehículo que valla pero siempre despierto muy adolorido y con la firme idea de acondicionar una camioneta para poder dormir cómodo jejeje, creo que me entiendes perfectamente!!
      Y bueno, la cosa es resolver en que lugares me voy a presentar a tocar para sacar recursos para seguir adelante, que eso ya lo he hecho pero viajando en transporte público y es toda una odisea, era mucho trabajo porque iba cargando tooodas mis cosasv viajando, caminando, de aventón y en la noche pues necesitaba un techo para dormir y era caro el hospedaje y tampoco podía llegar muy lejos, siempre tenía que regresar...
      El caso es que el ver tus videos me ha dado muy buenas ideas y mucho animo para retomar el plan para hacer y llevar esta nueva forma de vivir...
      Saludos!!

    Another great setup with multiple monitors in mind. I'm planning to find remote work and eventually live in a van/truck/bus. I also play guitar and a little keyboard so my build will be centered around my computers and monitors initially, now thanks to this I'll include a keyboard.
    I'm probably thinking more of a box truck or bus now because I still want a bit of creature comfort of a bed and toilet/shower.

Another thing to consider with PF is they have a 10 visit limit per month if it is not your home gym but that has never been an issue for me so far and you can also change the gym if you stay in an area for a while.

    Nice setup. We looked at installing solar for our travel trailer and ultimately the poor ROI of solar and the added weight just didn't make sense. It would have taken about 4 years to see any real savings over a good quiet generator even at $3.00/ gal for gas.

      Glad you like it! And thanks for asking will do that in a future video. My PC will retire as soon as prices are back to normal and I can build a new one. To many scalper prices at the moment. Further acoustic treatment is an option I am keeping open, but it really changes a lot closed vs open doors and I want it to be as minimal and good looking as possible. The walls will shrink a lot if you put up fat panels. Maybe one day I find an audio acoustic engineer who has a clever idea, it for sure will require a custom approach.

    I know 1 thing.. it is heavy so fresh tires r a must, but i do absolutely love it.
    Ive had my 27' Rv since 2014 .. i lived in it but its been in storage a few months now.
    Im doing a studio in that too so now ive been considering my Solar upgrades and power needs.
    This is the best mobile studio ive seen on RUclips so far.. ive watched about 3 or 4 over that last 6 yrs or so.
    Just got to tell u, this is excellent. Much more than a studio, which is what i was researching here.

      Glad you like it! Since I also live in it full time it had to check off multiple boxes and the studio was absolutely crucial. How much to buy and build? (even if aside from the recording equipment)
    And curious at your guess of the minimum yearly cost to stay on the road..(health club membership included).
    Looks like you've cut all the right corners.

    • @vancomposer
      @vancomposer  2 года назад

      Glad you like it. 🙋‍♂Total price tag was 37K USD for the van and another 10K for all the materials including the solar. So for 47.000$ it was ready to move in. Now I had not labor costs since I built it out myself but if you hire someone to do this (and might as well get better results especially on the wood work) you can easily add multiple Ks on top. Annual cost that is hard to answer since it depends on personal needs. How much I pay for gyms, about 55$ a month because I have two for more flexibility. I would say I can stay under 1K$ for basic living costs. A big factor is GAS depending on how much you travel. In general quality vanlife has always high expenses upfront and every so and so years bigger investments, like for example I just bought new batteries and they are lithium this time for 3.5K$. But if you split that over a good 5 year life span you are looking into what you easily pay for electrical costs in an regular place and you have the freedom. Same goes for the total cost of the van, I calculate it over the period I would have paid rent for like 5 years in a city and its paid off by then and I really start to safe a lot. Anyways hope that helps. 👍

    Hi Ricky, this is really awesome. I have been interested in a nomadic lifestyle for a while but it still seems a ways off for me. I am just curious if you don't mind, what would be the price range on a setup like this? I know there are a lit of variables but let's just say bare minimum, what do you think one could get by with spending and have a decent liveable setup?

    • @vancomposer
      @vancomposer  2 года назад

      Thanks, glad you like it. I wish there would be a simple answer to your question. I bought my van new, because I couldn't find anything used and most important in time. So the vehicle was 37K$ with tax and registration and then another 10K$ for all materials of which I would say I wasted up to 1K since I didn't really knew what I was doing and ended up getting rid of some things later, like a shower enclosure and cassette toilet. I would keep some of the leftover materials and re-use them for other projects in the years at least. So I would say if you do all labor work yourself as well, 5-10K$ on top of whatever van you can find. Also I am expecting a big post-COVID used campervan market building up soon. Hope that helps. 🙋

    Hi Ricky! Nice setup! I am looking to set up some studio monitors in my ambulance conversion. I want to avoid the inverter and use a car 12v amp into passive monitors. Have you tried anything like this? Do you have any advice you could lend me on this? Thank you!

    • @vancomposer
      @vancomposer  Год назад

      Thanks, glad you like it. Since active speakers don't draw that much power so wouldn't an inverter since its usually not more then 20% on top. And there is just way less options on passive speakers. But if that's how you like to do it then a decent 12 volts car amplifier should work. In case you will connect it to solar I would install a 12 volts regulator with enough amperage in between since the higher solar charging voltage might fry the amplifier otherwise. Some of rocker switches LEDs died this way for example after a while but now I put regulators in between so they get a steady 12V.

I have two memberships and pretty much daily access to showers there if I want. If I am camping for extended times and don't go for super sweaty hikes it doesn't bother me to skip showers for a couple of days. Also I do have a solar shower and seen some pretty cool other solutions but you will run through your water supply fast. And lets not forget lakes and rivers as long as you use environmental friendly soap.

    Hey! Awesome video! I was wondering if you'd taken any steps in regards to the layout design to improve the acoustics of the van or do you mostly work with headphones. Thanks in advance from a starting sound engineer looking to get into van life :3

    • @vancomposer
      @vancomposer  2 года назад

      Thanks a lot for watching and good luck to you! 👍🏻As for your question, acoustics in a van will always be a compromise. To me the freedom and inspiration BY FAR outweigh any of the cons. I had periods where the monotony of staring at the same walls in a regular studio would make me compose bad music or nothing at all no matter having better acoustics. When my doors are open the speaker sound is very decent and yes I transitioned using headphones most of the time now and realized I even prefer that in many cases and it's totally enough for my type of work. Worst I can always rent a place somewhere to mix if needed and in big film productions that is the standard anyways. Hope that helps. 🙋🏻‍♂️

      @@koollee You are welcome. I use the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO 250 Ohm most of the time for working because I love the isolated feel and vanlife is not always Instagram beautiful places, it can well be a boring parking lot with noise around or I have my vents blasting into my face in the summer. For final mixing I also do have the DT 880 which are a bit more balanced in frequency.

      Thanks, glad you like it and no problem asking. I first looked around for a used van but couldn't find anything and I needed this to be ready asap, otherwise would have had to extend my house lease and that would have cost me even more. So I bought it new for 37K$ with tax and registration and another 10K$ for the build out. I would say could have saved 1K$, bought some things I didn't need, a bit to much material etc.. You make mistakes when you do it the first time and can't really ask anyone for advice. But obviously still saved A LOT because of no labor cost.

    hi. cool van! i am doing somehting similar in my ambulance :) could you give me some pointers please on your monitors setup please? i was thinking 12v amp into passive mini monitors to avoid using the inverter. • @vancomposer
      @vancomposer  2 года назад

      Glad you like it and cool you are mobile as well. I am using active speakers since the late 90s so unfortunately I have no idea what is still available on the passive end. Only remember the good old NS-10s back in the day. But the good is that most audio equipment doesn't need much power to begin with and the inverter will add maybe 20%. So you are probably better and cheaper off just going the active route and also gives you way more options and smaller speakers to choose from. Also sound is somewhat more balanced in a closed system vs a maybe cheap external amp. Hope that helps.

      @@vancomposer hi! thanks so much for your reply. it seems like that is the route most people go down. i like the idea of having self balancing ones too like the ilouds or something. do you get any noise however from the inverter? i asked a similar question on another video and they said it hummed a lot. maybe it wasnt a pur sin wave. thanks again!

    • @vancomposer
      @vancomposer  Год назад

      @@dougiestewart8765 Pretty much all inverters have cooling fans build in that will turn on/ off depending on the power load. The only way I can avoid or reduce that is by using two. One dedicated to my PC but that one doesn't have a shore power option so I need to re-connect to the second inverter which is completely silent when on shore power but would constantly have the fan kick in on 12 volt and that got annoying after a while. You might be able to find a model with passive cooling but then again limitations on available models. My AIMS 600 watt can also charge the batteries when connected to shore power.

    Is the reason you don’t need to deaden the walls and ceiling w sound panels that you are recording only w electric instruments? If you were playing acoustic guitars and singing, I assume you’d need to soften the surfaces? (Which could also provide some insulative value?) I ask bc my son is a singer-songwriter, and I would think he’d need more of a classic sound-studio surface treatment if he did a build. Is that correct thinking or am I off-base?

    • @vancomposer
      @vancomposer  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for asking, the acoustics in here will always be a compromise and that is ok for me. I still think I write better music because I enjoy the traveling so much. Hanging thick foam on the walls to absorb specific frequency would just shrink the room to where it becomes unpratical to also fulltime life in it. And when I open all the doors that changes it all over, especially in regards to bass getting trapped in here when doors are closed. I work with headphones also and even the speakers sound is ok. For my needs acoustic guitar sound fine too.

    • @vancomposer
      @vancomposer  2 года назад

      Hey, unfortunately I can't give you a simple answer to that since it totally depends on what you want to power with your system and when and where. You have about a good 200ah usable energy if the batteries are healthy and then some buffer to have stuff running like a frig through the night. With 300 watts solar it might take a while to recharge depending on how much you empty them. But then also if you drive a lot, you can have your alternator co-charge.
