I worked for Madonna's uncle in the '70's/'80's... remember him saying he had a niece in NYC trying to become a singer; his kids lawyers.
wow!
Weird because she went to New York to be a dancer .
@@icedcoffee6461 And she became a singer too
@@eurech and a drummer and a guitar player
You can see from this interview why Johnny Carson was so beloved. Despite the fact that he may not have understood Madonna's fashion choices or her perspective, he still treated her with genuine interest and respect.
Genuine interest and respect? He, quite notoriously, landed Madonna‘s first ever late night talk show interview three albums into her career and then wasted half of it obsessing over her outfit.
@@PDC1987 well isnt that part of her image as an artist ? she expresses herself through fashion so its a valid talking point imo and he never crossed a line
@@dennis5806 agree. He was epically good at asking direct questions without crossing the line. Of his contemporaries, the later Dick Cavett would rub his junk all over the line, painful to watch late 70's Cavett. It took Conan decades to master his awkward creepy schtick ( it became pretty polished later on) . Leno was only ever a professional talking about cars or maybe cuts of meat. Other than that Leno telegraphed sarcasm or satire like a starving person gobbling down a handful of Slim Jims. Letterman was occasionally funnier than Carson just tiptoeing the line. But sometimes he just sucked, and he respected no lines. I don't know if it was the influence of Coke ( as in blow) and Xanax or what was Letterman's deal sometimes.
Carson was consistently, direct, funny, smart and decent....and his voice. His voice was what made him the GOAT.
Well how exactly was he supposed to understand a young girls fashion then being old ?
@@PDC1987 he can't only talk about her career 50% is quite enough
shes so confident, always has been.
Not so sure about that. Trying hard to convince herself.
this aged well
Confident of what?
Looks like a skinny boy in makeup trying to make shoulders look small by distorting the left side💯
She has always been strong, and that’s why she became the biggest star ever.
This has to be one of the very few times Madonna was awe struck and not the other way around. She even acts shy and sounds like a little girl.
yeah she was shy
She was a little girl !
@@lauralunaazul ... that was good. She never grew up. What a dingbat, she continues to be!
@@tenspeedtruck4083 not a fan either hey I wish her well though 😂
Like a Virgin’
the influence on lady gaga and miley is evident here!
There were others even before Madonna.
Oh please. Madonna didn't invent dumb sexy blonde.
FCastillo000 yeah, Marylin Monroo is there.
***** please is not needed it's annoying like people who say her career is over it's not she still going at almost 56 bless her
Luvster G. there were always 'others'
I love her. I was about ten years old, when she had her breakthrough here in Europe with Like A Virgin, and I was growing up in an abusive home, and she was my getaway from it all, she still is. Love you Madonna 💘💋
I’m right there with you!
Say what you will. But she was a cultural phenom. And one of the biggest stars of all time.
+Neil Tipton She's a nasty ho.
+Neil Tipton actually the biggest star ever cause shes the highest selling female artist OF ALL TIME!!
noemistephanie93 yah and she fucked a dog.
That's not an opinion, it's an actual and measurable fact.

Who is Rihanna and what does she have to do with this story?
Oh the good old days of 80s mega stars. It was a good time, I miss them.
Dan H I feel the same way.
With the passing of Prince, Michael Jackson, Whitney, and George Michael, Madonna is the the last of that particular type of icon that forever changed the face of music.
its funny that they thought what she's wearing is stupid....not realizing 20 years later that thing is the most normallll looking outfit ever
+WillJ Y lmao true xD
+WillJ Y its still not normal.
***** oh u hav no idea wat other celeb is wearing these days then
theelviscerator but.... ur mom wears that :(
yeah she was ahead of her time (hollywood) in stupidity
I grew up with Johnny...watching this makes me realize I miss those days. The man had class.
and lots of charm.
The 80's can't be beat. The greatest time to be alive.
70's!
Not if you were black
Too right.
@Championxeneixe Lol 2020 with wuhan virus and bad movie remakes.
@Sean Lacey Sorry to hear that...check with your Doctor they have different treatment's for that nowadays.
Love Madonna. And Johnny handled the whole thing brilliantly! :)
Her confidence it's so inspiring, I can't be that confident in my room alone lol
Her voice in the 80s was so melodious and her eyes are always pretty
Her talking voice is so calm and beautiful
I'm not a huge Madonna fan, but I took my wife to the concert last year and JEEZ that was a good show, just amazingly executed, with the best stage show I've ever seen.
MDNA tour remains one of her best shows of all time.
@@azazelc8079 I had the "joy" of sitting through the 2.5 hour late performance (started at 12:30 AM) in Las Vegas where she was "booed" continuously through the night. It was AWESOME that the audience had such a reaction and she deserved our scorn. Starting that late THEN complaining throughout the show how tired she was. Then cancel the damn performance! -- Actually, she shut the production down shortly thereafter.
It's good saying it was the best stage show you've ever seen, but how many have you seen to compare it to. I mean if it was the best by default because it was the only one, then it would not be so great.
I never was s fan of hers either….but I never went to one of her shows. Perhaps my perspective would be different today 🤷
Madonna definitely improved over time...and yes, this is a weird interview. Not flattering for her...
Wow she is so young and beautiful. And her body is so fit and toned.
Heather she has been incredibly toned most of her life. She was pretty young here when most of us had muscle tone and Madonna is no exception
well when she was even younger, she was not toned at all..look at Lucky Star. She's a good dancer and relatively slim, but not visibly muscular or toned. Same with Like A Virgin, slim like most are in their youth, but not at all toned. She started working out hard in preparation of ther True Blue album, and looks amazingly fit in those music videos (papa dont preach, open your heart).
Not now
She was 28 years young here, going on 29, beautiful 29 springs indeed.
And still is
the charm ooozing out of these two...it's just too much !!!
Yes!
I have never seen a more graceful and flamboyent young woman Artist like
Late 80's Madonna' ever
That guy is totally dazzling me with his class and kindness and gentle playfulness. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have missed one of his shows if I had been living in America by the time they used to air.
Erm... Mature Eastern... civilizations? Can you name countries ?
mantra3000 I stayed up to watch Johnny almost every night. He was the BEST. Sadly, for me, late night TV has never been the same since.
***** You see, we (Americans) don't have negative opinions on these more "evolved" shows in the East you speak of. Because, to us, you don't even exist.
njplr, you thought "Wow, what a dumb hostile comment from that tovishal person, how could I be more hostile and dumb?" and that's not a good idea. Culture clash on a Madonna/Carson video, wow, that's about as ridiculous as RUclips can get.
mantra3000 Clearly, you haven't spent too much time on YT, if you think that little exchange is as ridiculous as YT can get. There is a GREAT deal of fatuous, ignorant, mean-spirited commentary posted here quite frequently. YT comments can and DO get quite "hostile and dumb". That stated, let me simply point out, tovishal took what is basically a light-hearted, fun clip from a late night American gossip show, and turned it into an opportunity to attack US values and to laud the superiority of HIS (Middle Eastern, I'm guessing) "more evolved" culture. I probably should ignore such ignorance with the icy, silent contempt it deserves, but I confess, ever since 9-11 I just can't. I am so sick and tired of us (the US) being criticized in such fashion. Why would he even bother watching a clip of Johnny Carson if he feels this way? I certainly wouldn't choose to watch some Iman ranting about moral turpitude in the US. He watches it because we produce fun shows, because our celebrities are world famous, and because it's INTERESTING. Like it or not, the US has power and influence worldwide, particularly through our music, movies, TV, and entertainment industry. Tovishal displays envy and jealousy, and masks it with contempt. I call him out on it. (sorry, I didn't mean to run on, but I did want to justify my post. YOU, at least, seem reasonable and open, and I have no wish to be perceived as just another "hater" here on YT.)
"At least on television" Johnny was the master
Madonna in her twenties is just a delight. What a gift from the heavens she was.

Madonna Has Been and Always Will Be a World 🌍 Event
Saw Her in Live Aid !
Thank You 🙏 Madonna
Her personality was so cute and charming 😍
A true classic television moment. loved Johnny Carson, and i still love Madonna.
you can also still love Carson.
This was her Papa Don't Preach and Who's That Girl look. The bleach blonde hair and heavy eyebrows. She was also very tone and I really think she looks stunning. This also resembles her True Blue album cover look. This phase lasted about 2 years . Then Like A Prayer came out and she had darker hair and kind of a new image. This woman has completely reinvented herself every few years but she can really pull off any look and that's the truth. I actually remember when this aired, I stayed up to watch it, I had just turned 14 and was obsessed with Madonna. This was when she was a little more subdued.
This is by far my favorite Madonna era
What a fantastic moment in television!
I've always loved how Madonna has never felt the need to have a sun tan. She is so naturally beautiful.
She's so naturally trashy
She looks better without it
She decided after her first album to stop tanning, as she realized that the sun not only damaged your skin from excessive tanning, but it also aged your skin prematurely, also the alabaster skin she has since sported went along with her new look. If you see pics of her in the early 80s she had a tan.
But, she decided to have so much plastic surgery that she looks like the aliens from the X-files?
She had muscles back in the beginning too! Always a fitness gal :D
More like anorexic.
DamageIncM you must be fat af then. Thats a normal healthy body she had there.
DamageIncM probably something wrong in your mind. Your problem.
@journalistethics dotcom oh another idiot that believes nutty Internet stories about satanic cults and Madonna. OK. Got any proof, nut boy? Yes satanic cults exist in Hollywood, but hard to believe madonna was or is part of one. She adopted several kids from Africa to give them a better life and a bunch of other stuff for charities in her time. You she seems like a pretty down to earth, nice woman in many interviews when she drops the facade. Why on earth would she be in a satanic cult? What has it done for her? She's still aged like any one else would age. Still has the same human problems thst we all have. Can't see the benefit. Not only that, why on earth would the American law arrest her, execute her and then put an exact clone back in her place ? Lol That's the same as not killing her in the first place. What would be the point in any of that? And why would they execute her and not the other several thousand members in the cults? Hope you have some sensible answers for me .
@journalistethics dotcom all women who have a deep voice ofcourse are born male. You Americans never fail to amuse me
When I see her interviewed from back then, I can't help but wonder how the chick in these interviews is the same chick that goes into the studio and creates amazing, brilliant, perfectly crafted pop songs. It's incredible.
She looked really young and girlish, while she was already 29 here. From her True Blue period: I had so much merchandise with that album cover on it: even a towel and a sleeping bag;-). She is still an icon, great to see this.
Good thing that desk was there!! 😭😂😂😂🤣
Si hasta con el pelo corto es preciosa!! bella!!..además de ser muy graciosa, simpática y brillante la gran Madonna, imitada pero jamás igualada.."La reina del pop"
If this were today, she would have taken control of this interview. She is the Queen
She definitely had a spark that she was gonna be a superstar
She was already a superstar.
She was already a superstar for 3-4 year at that time.
Not many women could make Johnny Carson blush the way she did😍
back when people apreciated her art and how great and unique she is
Being 32 and never watching Johnny Carson when I was little sure makes seeing how late night was back in the day. How stars were young and acted. Crazy.
She was probably more successful because she didn't use drugs.
30 means dedication to YHWH and Precious Blood of Christ Jesus
Like say, Mick Jagger, for instance?
Bingo.
Lmao, she 100% has done drugs
Mary Teresa And yet why are you here? Commenting on an obscure Madonna interview from 1987 saying she’s a “stupid POS” (that’s you, little lady) doesn’t make you look cool. It makes you look ridiculous. Bitch you’re a fan!
I am shocked that Madonna didn't go on "Carson" until '87! She was a superstar way before that!
Madonna was the best thing that happened in the eighties just love this woman Mike
A lot of hating going on in the comments, but lets face it the lady is a household name and has number 1 hits for 30 years. She must be doing something right
Fooling everyone .. just Joshin...

She wanted to rule the music world when she was young and she accomplished her goal. How many female singers can match this womans longevity and success.
Before the internet! I ran into this half way through in 1987 and shoved my Madonna VHS into the recorder to tape all that I could! LOVE M forever.
Funny how you can gage the respect by her interaction with Johnny as opposed to her interaction with Letterman.
You are an icon and an OG when your first interview ever is with Johnny Carson
Queen of Music. End of story. God, I love that short haircut. Madonna always was so stylish
. Queen of Pop Music
Queen of Music, definitely.
She was 500 years ahead of us....an icon.
The only thing she is ahead of anybody on is the use of mind altering drugs.
She rules the music.
So in love with her as a teenager back in the 80s I forgot how attractive she truly was
Madonna is strikingly beautiful. Wow.
She looks like my brother, Dimitri, he has aids too.
Your left Nostril I thought you used a condom

She's so beautiful and young... Love Madonna!!!
I've always love madonna a gorgeous badass from the beginning. I love how sweet she is here and a bit vulnerable
i wish we could see the entire interview in this quality
That's the queen!!! never has changed for anyone!!! Go Madonna Go!!!!
That's the queen alright. The queen of insanity
Madonna is still the most successful and powerful female music artist of all time.
Mr. Raum Madonna is a great example of how people with enormous self-confidence and aggressiveness can become powerful. Her talent - limited.
@@annlanders978 her talent is not limited. She is an utterly brilliant songwriter and record producer, and that allowed her to create what is the most critically acclaimed catalog by any female recording artist ever.
We will always love and adore you, Johnny Carson. Truly, Tyler Lord Hamilton
The poor man clearly looked uncomfortable.
Those dark eyebrows with that lipstick.

She's adorable , beautiful , sexy, smart, witty and successful -- look how that always brings out some very frustrated life hating losers to insult her. There's always a small % of life hating people who will try to bring anyone down to bring themselves up. You can find that everywhere, at your local coffee shop, stores , daily life.
For someone famous like Madonna - it's magnified many times.
That's why this woman and many other people are confident, the last thing they need is to be influenced by the sad group of bitter angry failures at life that often spew hatred and insults in comment sections.

Its always interesting to see Johnny being intimidated by attractive girls. He is getting pretty serious then.
I had just gotten out of undergrad Engineering College in '85 when her career started to take off...I really liked her early music and had a huge crush on her...in the nite clubs of the day her songs were prominent and even better, the girls were starting to dress like her...it was a target rich environment :) Ahhh, those were the days.

Like it or not:
Madonna is the blueprint of everything female and pop since 1985!
The most duplicated female pop star of all time.
Well she was a young singer at that time obviously
She was cute and shy. Johnny was very sweet to her. Good stuff.
"Flirts" ... Yeah, okay.
This says it’s her first talk show, which is ironic because by this time she was a massive entertainer. The first biggest female pop artist in history. And I remember that never really saw her in interviews for the first number of years, then this one happened.
I think you have to have been around when Madonna emerged on the scene to really appreciate her and what she did for music. She seemed to come out of nowhere. It's sad to see her maligned now but she really has brought it on herself with her antics.
And what antics would those be? Not committing suicide on the day before her 40th birthday, to placate what society wants out of women and female entertainers?
She was already there coming out during early 80s everyone knew she was there
when she explained what she was wearing, all of a sudden "Busti La Caca" from Selena popped in my head lol. Lady M looks amazing here!
yes!! Madonna used to be a babe girl: so sweet and calmed down. god had got blessed. sinceramente: un amigo de Madonna.
She had such a sweet speaking voice.
how does such a soft spoken, sweet, sexy young lady like that turn into the raging diva that is now madonna??
She was always supremely confident and in control of her surroundings. At this point she was a huge star, internationally famous, and her marriage to Sean Penn was collapsing. She gave one soft-spoken interview, but she was not in any other sense particularly sweet.
She was worse back then
Dan Nunya
She's always been both!
Madonna!
She seems shy on live television. You could see her being nervous in her Like A Virgin days during interviews.that sweet nervousness and hint of self doubt left her quickly in the later 80s :)
Madonna is highly progressive, liberal, nonconformist and it rubbed a lot of people who were more conservative the wrong way.
That's why she is viewed as highly controversial.
She stuck up for the LGBT community.
She promoted female empowerment that includes owning your sexuality.
She stated that doesn't use sex to promote herself.
She's a sexual person and that it shows in how she promotes herself.
She created anti-racist video, Like A Prayer
She tries to promote universal love and unity through her music.
She believes that music can unite people.
She doesn't think in black and white.
She had "black" and Latino boyfriends before she was famous.
heck....She wanted be a R/B song artist, but her manager wanted her to do pop music instead.
She's diverse in music genre.
She has been speaking up for those that are marginalized whether women, gay, non-white, people that aren't of the religious mainstream
She's donates and sets up schools in African country, Malawi.
She adopted 4 children from there.
She even stated that she felt more of a connection with her adoptive David than with any of her other children.
She let David go to a soccer academy in Portugal, and she relocated to there to be near him.
She has a lot more emotional depth and sensitivity than people think.
I think part of it has to do with the death of her mother when she was 5 years old. She also lost gay friends to AIDS. She also was victim of rape.
It really bothers me when I see people judge her as having a black heart, satanic, and other negative stuff.
The prejudice against her really bothers me. ....especially, when she really is a caring person that has been helping others
She's not just a performer.
She's an activist and philanthropist.
She made millions of dollars and she has given back.
Madonna Louise Ciccone is more than just a "diva"
