Brutally Honest Pro Bass Angler (The Bilge Podcast)

- Chris and Trait sit down with the most (brutally) honest man in the professional angler ranks, Matt Herren, to discuss the split 4 years ago, why polygraphs are not busting more cheaters, the changes Bassmaster needs to consider, the real trust behind the Tony Christian scandal, and the newly revamped Bassmaster Opens qualification structure.

I know it's been a year, but I just joined. Herren is one of my favorite anglers. Up-front non questions asked. You 2 keep up the good work. Thanks for the upfront content.
Man something about this podcast just makes me gravitate towards it and I can’t really put my finger on it. I love the honesty and sincerity from Matt Herren. Not just about the scandal stuff, man just the sport in general. Bottle that up and keep it going moving forward. Instant subscribe 👍🏽
🙏👊🏽
Great podcast! New respect for Matt I love his honesty and being straightforward! Y’all keep the good content coming Zaldaingerous ones🎣🎣🎣
I'm kinda working my way backwards through these but the bilge is the best fishing podcast out there
This podcast to me…. Like waiting for the newest House of the Dragon episode ! Thanks y’all
😊👊🏽
🎉 just tuned in to check it out , before I was realized it I had to rush to work. Great program.
Why are we calling people out without naming who they are? If Matt Herren is some truth teller - then just say who it is. Why hide it? If you don’t want to say who it is then why even talk about it.
Because defamation laws prevent it if they know but don’t have any actual evidence
He’s under contract
@@TrumpsEarBandage Then don’t front to be some hard ass…
@@mathewsarrowslinger2787 I agree
Your exactly right. I've always thought that.
Great vid. Been following BASS since the late 70's. I know Matt is a great fisherman. I have always thought of him as a grumpy old man even though he is a lot younger than men. This interview opened my eyes about him and it gained a lot more respect for the man he is. Please keep doing more of this type interviews. The interviews with Rick and Matt have been very informative. Great job.
People don’t get to see the side we see over a few beers in the RV Park, and that’s why we had him on 😁
I have definitely gained a lot of respect and admiration for Matt Heron after this podcast.
One of my favorite anglers for years. I’ve made some baits for him and Lowen. Both great guys!!!
Chris & Trait, great show! I love Matt Herren. He should be on every podcast as “The Truth”. 😂 Keep up the great work y’all!!
Great podcast!
Matt is an awesome guy. I’ll never forget him calling me personally regarding an order I placed with Taddo Designs. He’s definitely a role model. Not only for the industry, but as genuine man.
He shoots everyone straight and that’s all you can ask for out of someone. Great dude.
Here is an Irony. When I bought my Toyota, I had to explain to the sales rep I was buying it because of its association with Bass fishing.
Really enjoyed this and became a subscriber today! Will be listening from now on.
There are issues in the reverse with polygraphs also. So what do we do about that. I can tell you 100% that an honest person can somehow come up with a false reading on a polygraph. When I was a young kid (about 13) somehow my name came up about burning down a shed at a little league field. I had rock solid alibies, I had been at a record store waiting for a particular album to come in and had been talking with the owner the entire time. To make a long story short I was asked if I would take a polygraph test and I instantly agreed. I figured it would clear me and I wouldn't have to deal with this mess anymore. I failed the polygraph test. I wasn't a trouble maker and was kinda scared while taking the test. Was that the reason for the failure? I don't know, I just know I didn't not have anything to do with the shed being set fire yet I had to go to trial for it. I just wish we could find a more reliable way to ensure rule compliance. I know it is pretty much the best we have and for the most part pretty reliable but in the back of my mind I will always have a worry.
Good conversation, I enjoyed the talk it was real….
I’m an hour in. I’m addicted to this podcast. Every one is great to listen too 👍🎣
🙏👊🏽
Excellent show and information.
Thanks 👊🏽
I'm going to disagree with the format changes for the Opens. Kind of contradicted yourself with saying its a better chance at making it for these heavy hitter guys, and previously 1 bad tournament ruined there chances. They could still fish all 9, they had 3 chances of making it to the elites. I do agree that this changes it so you cant just get lucky 3 times and then make it to the elites, but I feel like that's not as common as its being made out to be.
Frankly, from an outsiders perspective, this feels like a move made by sponsors. The difference being not a lot of people can take a financial leap to drop $16,200 on all 9 tournaments + expenses(fuel, food, room/board), all for a chance at making the elites. "YoU CaN't dO iT nOw, hOw aRe yOu GoInG tO dO iT fOr tHe ElItEs", sorry but there is a difference between justifying the expense for a chance at a dream and actually living the dream. I can justify spending the money on the elite tour even though its more, than spending the money on a chance. So basically its made it so you cant even have a chance unless you are sponsored prior to starting the Opens, or have yourself or someone bankroll it.
Then lets actually address the Opens. How many boats are in the Opens? 200+? Then add on co-anglers. Yall compared it to going from the Minors to the Majors, yet come game time when up at bat you have the same number of players in the field that you would in a Major. The comparison would be double the players in the field and try to get on base, while also having someone else next to you swinging at the same ball(and if you don't let them swing you can get DQ).
At the end of the day, your are not groomed for the Elites after 9 Open tournaments. You are now groomed for Open tournaments.
It should create harm for the anglers if they are breaking rules! Just make it public
I have met both of these guys at a BassU course years ago at Gadsden Alabama, both are some of the most informative guys to talk to. Chris brought his own powerpoint presentation to explain big swimbaits. Matt talked to everyone that had a question and even gave away some prototype crankbaits to people at the event. Great guys, straight shooters as well.
I spent a lot of time on that power point. Total nerd moment 😝
When Matt says, it’s made heroes out of guys, just like I said about the Alabama rig, it has made A LOT of AVERAGE fishermen “ great”…
Matt is a cool guy and this was another great interview. On the subject of Tony Christian (or any cheating incident) anglers always want to see cheaters punished and are upset when tournament organizations don't press charges on people they catch cheating. Most anglers don't want to hear this but the reason tournament organizations don't press charges against people that cheat in their tournaments is; the organizations become liable for damages caused by cheaters to the other participants. Hypothetically if in court, Tony Christian reveals he cheated in 20 FLW tournaments and didn't get caught, than everyone that participated in those tournaments and finished below him have suffered financial and/or point loss and look to FLW to compensate them. Multiply that by 20 (or whatever the true number of tournaments he admits to cheating in) and that's enough money to bankrupt the organization. Don't think for a second that attorneys for the accused don't point that out to any organization that presses charges. The anglers are the ones that need to bring charges is they feel that strong about it, organizations are not going to take the risk. Tournament angling is gambling and the fields are to big to be completely policed; ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!
I love these videos! I have been tournament fishing since 1987 and the changes in fishing are both good and bad. It is to the point that most people cannot afford the electronics, trolling motors, lithium batteries, etc. to compete at high level. I fish an occasional BFL now and listen to these guys who want to fish the BPT or Elite Series. I don't think they realize how expensive it is and what it takes. The fishing is just a small portion of the whole deal. These new guys wanting to make a living at this sport need to listen to guys like Matt and pay attention to what he says. He knows what he is talking about.
Great podcast, Chris. Fun to listen to the real world comments of bass fishing!
Thanks Dustin!
Just discovered this podcast. Good stuff here with Matt.
Thanks 👊🏽
Really liked the interview. Keep it up.
Great podcast! Keep it up ! You guys are killin it!
I thought about trying to go Pro and then I saw the money involved, that stopped me in my tracks. It’s sad that people without money can’t seem to get ahead, some do but most don’t
That’s life
If u r in a national fishing tournament with money on the line, they should check your license at the registration event
They used to. After Covid happened, the in-person meetings stopped
Y’all killin it with this podcast, palaniuk feider and some MLF guys would be great guests
Feider is a definite and we’d love to have some MLF guys too but they’d need to be honest and transparent and I’m not sure any of them are capable at this time… but if one wants to be and can put down the regurgitated talking points, we are here.
I'm glad you had him on, great episode. Good luck to both of you this next season!
Thanks Bill! He’s a great guest and most of the fans don’t get to see this side of him.
Since I've gotten into bass fishing, Herren is a guy I've listened to A LOT. Dude is super knowledgeable and seems like a guy I'd love to be in the back of the boat with to learn. Thanks for this sit down Chris! ❤️
He’s always a good conversation!
Zaldain reminds me of the guy that when he's around military guys always says "I was gonna join but....[enter excuse]" sorry maybe it's the mustache
“I would have went pro but blew out my knee”
Chris, here's the 2003 BFL All American on the Mobile Delta that Matt mentioned on the poscast. ruclips.net/video/H_7L04p6CrY/видео.html
A lot is made of the 9 rather than 3 Opens being ready for the Elites. Some of the best anglers made it there by winning the Federation National Championship, one week and almost no money. I turned it down when I won in 2005 and figured it cost me $2500 out of pocket to fish the Federation that year.
To reset your mind every 4 days or week and not go back to history especially at your home set of waters is extremely fn hard to do.
We are creatures of habit
For real! My home water is Chickamauga and I was on some fish. I fished a local tournament and only about a 20 minute run to my hole. Within just a few minutes I had my limit but never could get a kicker or two. This one particular spot normally would produce a few big fish during the day. I never would leave this spot because I knew generally you would get at least one good one. Needless to say I never caught the kicker and ended up in third which didn’t pay out hardly anything. I should have went to other places. Lived and died on location and paid for it.
A friend of mine Marshalled on St Lawrence and drew Dean Rojas. He got a speeding ticket in the same place and DID NOT report it to BASS.
If anglers break rules they should be publicly known period. It should not be done behind closed doors especially base on who it is. Make examples it stops.
If a dude loses sponsors so be it that was there decision to break the rule. It keeps the sport true and if there are sacrifices in the process so be it at the end of the day it was there choice too break the rule
Best show on the web.. Thank you.
Thanks for watching 👊🏽
Really enjoyed this video!
Thanks Brad!
NAMES!
this doesn't mean anything unless we know who you're talking about!
I get y’all aren’t going to put people but we end up being lost or curious as to what y’all are talking about in reference to the meeting and whatever was wrong and no one disagreed besides who was in that house. Well lol who was in. The house? 😂😂😂😂
I think that’s the On Em underwear situation 😆
@@Zaldaingerous 🤣🤣🤣🤣ahh ok lol
I met Matt Herren an Bill Lowen an Chris at Santee in 2020-2021. Three of the absolute best men I've ever met. They treated my little boy like gold when they talked to him. He tells everyone about it.
I would not take a phone call on the bank of the Missouri River in late May at Slippery Anne, I'd have to ask the mosquito's first.
The deal of not paying out at the same rate or even a tad better after adding more anglers is bullshit!! This is one reason why it's not going to really grow. How much money did FLW net in the early 2000s?
Awesome show... absolutely love the honesty! Brutal honesty! Keep it up! Matt's the man!
Thanks Troy 👊🏽
Those fish can't hear or feel the frequency that sonar operates in. That's nonesense.
If the A-Rig is illegal for professional tournaments then FFS should be too.
Setting here turning wrenches on Friday every once in awhile my right 👍 thumb hurts 🤕. Not from work boys they were chewing last night in the rain.
Matt Definitely doesn’t beat around the bush lol. Thats what we love about him.

Hey Chris great podcast and great conversation with Matt listened to the entire podcast but what's the inside story of the angler meeting and Matt's position on "not crossing the line?" Please fill us on the situation!! Lol
agreed
I think this part was talking about the On Em underwear situation. I didn’t realize we didn’t explain it all.
@@Zaldaingerous on em brings light to the sport. He’s our happy Gilmore. Not everybody needs to represent themselves like kvd. We need to keep making bass fishing fun.
Love the podcast! It’s gives me JRE vibes for sure 🤘🏼
What’s the annoying sound in the background for the last hour of the video?
Roland Martin 2000 us open or right around that year got a citation for no fishing license and lost the days weight and 7,000 grand!! Ouch
This is a solid podcast dude. Hope it keeps growing for you

I think the trails need to get back to helping each other and remember that fans are there for the anglers not the brand x trail. Entry fees need to lower winnings need to be spread out more and this is a hot topic but I think we need to get rid of Foward facing sonar and get back to actual bass fishing instead of video game fishing.
@M. Jones don’t mean to sound smart but that’s all pipe dreams! Just like every other business, small up to the Walmart/Amazon they’ve completely forgotten (or better yet said screw you this is how it is)who their customers are , who pays their light bills, CEO asinine millionaire salaries! If only they would take your simple comment you solved the fishing industry essentially right there! I agree with you 100% especially on the video game fishing! I get tired of the if you don’t like the forward facing sonar don’t use it which is an excuse for I can’t find fish.
@@jdubya3498 I know its a pipe dream but if they don't do something the anglers will eventually take matters into their own hands. That's what the MLF was started out to be but they had the sleeziest bastard of all as the head guy in Boyd Duckett.
Tony Christian lives in northeast ga and still fishes electric only tournaments. Seems like everyone has forgotten what he done.
The two top bass fishing leagues needs to find a way for the fishermen to be paid a salary each year!!
The tournament wins should all be bonus money. Someone is making money. I could go on and on about why.
It’s just the right thing to do!! I’m just a fan of the sport, I do love fly fishing for trout but otherwise just a fan.
The fishermen deserve better.
That would be nice, but I’m not sure that the economics are there to support it, and that’s what you have to be okay with when you decide you want to be a pro fisherman. You get to fish for a living which is awesome, but you aren’t going to make crazy $ bc it’s just not there.
@@Zaldaingerous yes you are right and I understand thanks for your reply. I wish you and Trait the
Very best for the 23 season, God bless you both
Most of the guys fishing the tour have trust funds. That's what separates them from the average angler. It's not their skill.
Great podcast love it .
If you can get Mercer on seems like nobody has Mercer on their podcast and Dude loves the sport and a wealth of knowledge just an idea. Keep the videos Zaldangorus and I will stay ON'EM . Love it thank you
Dave will def be a guest when our schedules line up 👊🏽
The problem is with greed at the top level of the industry the amounts of money that we can't even fathom are going to a lot of people who couldn't give two shits about bass fishing or the anglers... N that goes for every industry n almost every job in the world.. bottom line is for us little guys is you have to love what you do

Love the podcast, but please do something with the dog next time.
Exposing the business of pro fishing. Enjoyed it.
Excellent interview. What incident was being discussed at 55:15? It effects the pros in the sport? Thanks.
Im trying to figure this out, as well!
@@nickangel8098 if you figure it out, let me know. The video may have been edited to not mention the names.
I think they’re talking about Matt Robertson fishing with his pants down but could be wrong
It's not fun to watch other people fish plain and simple...it's super fun to fish but not watch lol....y'all are trying to make fishing a spectacle
But it is tho. To many people it very much is.
Were yall talking about Robertson? 😂
The elite series should be 50. There isn't much "elite" about 100 guys who all pay entry fees. The opens with so many guys trying to make the elites fishing all 9 has finally developed a minor league feeder system for the elite series. Great podcast yall!
The elite series should be open to 200 guys. They should allow up to 75 local pros into competition. Not everyone has the money to fish the entire season. Then you'd really see who the best was. And if a local legend won it would give them a career path to full time touring.
@@jaredleicht1656 Is this satire? There are 40 leagues you can do this in. NOT gonna happen at the top level in the entire sport.
@@MikesBassFishing
Why do you say it's the " top level " ?
I know several elite series/MLF pros currently fishing and they are the rich kids that tournament bass fished in our area. Nothing more.
They are not the best from this area. And atleast two of them will admit it.
They all came from wealthy families that could support them doing it till they pick of sponsors.
It's just a fishing club for rich guys as it currently is. Open it up to the public and you'll see who the best is on that body of water.
It's more about selling products than fishing abilities. And you have to put up your own cash to get started.
I bet every " pro" knows anglers that are as good as them or better that don't even fish anymore.
Perfect example is Ike. He's going into the fishing hall of fame and he will tell you Bob Soley was better than he was. He said Bob is the best he ever met at finding bass. Bobs a plumber that doesn't even fish anymore.
Put a name on it!!!!
🤣🤣🤣
Probably one of the best interviews and honest pod cast I have watched on RUclips.
Thank you 🙏
See Trent right there you should name names!
Matt is one of the best fishermen that has ever walked imo
Good stuff from ole hammer.
Is there a place that we can listen to this that’s not RUclips? Only the first episode is posted on podcast and I would love to listen to the rest while driving.
Going to work on that this week. The Jon B audio was initially too large a file for some reason on our website, but will take another stab at it and get them up.
Sweet! Looking forward to listening to them!
Love y'all. I actually found a pic with all us along with Matt from 2015 classic but I'm not go post it lol. Just waiting on my one on one swimbait class since we both on battle born together.
Even the intro on this podcast is AWSOME!! GREAT SHOW!
Glad you enjoy it!
You got me on that one, Matt. I totally did not factor in the Walleye fishing impact on Oahe' into the BASS event there. I thought I'd be a top performer in that Fantasy event, I blew it.
It’s pretty crazy how acclimated those fish are to electronics
@@Zaldaingerous Around here the trout know little about sonars.
I've been a casual bass fisher person for 30 or 40 years and the competitive side is mostly just confusing to me. There's a lack of clarity and continuity; the different tournaments and governing bodies, rankings, and how it's presented doesn't help me connect or remember year to year. For me the sport, call it competitive bass fishing, would be way more compelling if it was under one organization and had a clear pyramid to showcase the most accomplished fisherman. It's exciting to see the very best people competing but right now I have no real sense of who the best competitive bass fisherman are? I know and watch lots of youtube fisherman, but when I check out any of the official stuff, try and follow a tournament for instance, I don't last 5 minutes. In fishing, unlike baseball, most of the fans are fans because they also fish, they're participants in the sport so they watch it for different reasons and have different identifications with their, ahem, heroes. Love the honest talk in this episode and feel for you guys having to navigate such a difficult career path.
Probably won’t see this but as a spectator that consumes all things bass fishing, we only see the top 20 anglers in any given tourney anyways. So whether there’s 30, 50, 90, or 200 anglers they don’t show us anything but the top of the tourney anyways. That being said I’m sure the fishing would be tougher for y’all with 100 and a little better with 50
Polygraphs are not admissable in a courtroom because they are not reliable.....how the hell are they reliable in tournament fishing? And as far as the pay goes... somebody in all 3-4 organizations is getting rich... and it's not the anglers. Something has to change. I sure hate to hear about the fish getting wise to the ffs....breaks my heart 😂😂😂
Excellent podcast just started watching it this week. I literally watched this to see what happened between Tharp and Herren on Norfork. That was one of my favorite tournaments to watch and Chris Zaldain you were up there at the top also
Keep the Bilge going! You guys are great!
The fishing industry is and has always been upside down on the money..imagine a used car salesman that has to pay to try and sell a car and not get the commission..I love fishing and like tournament fishing but it isn't a sustainable model for the fisherman I wish the field was smaller and have a elite series and a minor league series and tournament with no electronics or hp limit or 2 rods only or 2 lures..mix it up
Y’all are not looking close enough! bass fishing is blowing up when you have all of these colleges with bass fishing teams more and more colleges coming on board. Plus more and more younger people loving the sport the industry will have to change. People will make it change because it has no choice it will find a way to please the anglers. I see more leagues more formats and more anglers making a living doing just this
The no information rule is ridiculous. All the veteran anglers have gotten information for years and now the new anglers can't do it. Absurd rule that you hear someone say something and now you could be subject to disqualification even if you weren't actually seeking that information.
Good interview and great questions. I'm a fan of bass fishing, regardless of format. I enjoyed every fish counts and enjoy a 5 limit bag. My wife who doesn't follow bass fishing always found more enjoyment watching MLF on TV and did relate more to it. She also liked the catch weigh release conservation side of things instead of riding around with 5 fish in a livewell. But at the end of the day, she isn't the one to spend money on fishing gear and tackle.
A new fan might go out and spend a $100 on fishing tackle in their lifetime, versus my ridiculous addiction to buying tackle. It's important to find the balance of growing the sport while also recognizing that 95% of those who follow professional bass fishing spend 99% of the money in the sport. Trying to grow the 5% who spend 1% is tough. Those COVID spike in sales of probably Walmart combos and bobbers is a temporary thing.
You look at why the Googan Squad is so successful and it's because they brought entertainment and competition that a young viewer could relate to and participate in. They capitalized and converted those views into realizable dollars. Young anglers could go out and try the challenges, as dumb as they may be, they connected with the average joe.
That is something the US market could learn about the JDM bass industry and how they target the young kids. They have bank fishing tournaments for everyone who doesn't have a boat.
NAILED IT 🎯
The elite series should be 70 anglers based on what the payouts are….. at 100+ anglers, first place should be $200k…..
I agree, the field should be smaller. I think if they took a revote this season, many would ask for a smaller field size.
@@Zaldaingerous And this may be an unpopular opinion, but I also don’t believe half the field should get paid either….
Is there a place I can listen to an audio only version, preferably downloadable? I subscribed on my podcast app, but the only episode in the feed is the Rick Clunn interview
Dont forget about social media as an income, some of these "kids" are fire when it comes to putting out content and getting paid for it
Great podcast! This one hit home. I’ve been a mechanic for 9 years and the dream is to become a professional angler
Yes
Every bass fisherman that has a money crunch, blame the organization for pocketing the money.. they don't realize the cost of business... Some need to figure out how to get more eyeballs with non endemics
Matt Herron is a very good and smart fisherman
He is!
Can your podcast be found on Spotify or other podcast platforms? Or just RUclips?
Love these podcast. I love the honesty and the behind the scenes information. The more I listen to this, it just confirms this is not the life for me. Mad respect for you guys able to chase your dreams.
100% truth...when MLF first started in TV and introduced the new format, I seriously thought those guys were competing for money to donate to charity. I sincerely thought you guys were making tons of money and when I heard about pros jumping into local club or smaller events, it kinda irritated me. Thank you for putting the whole story out there. When I was coming up watching these guys I never imagined guys were sleeping in their truck and barely making ends meet. Keep it coming! I've watched a few of these in the past couple of days...I'm addicted. Great job guys! Seriously
Honestly did not know there was drama and dudes fighting in bass fishing but it does make sense, anyone know what they were talking about in that meeting?
Can we get the podcast drops to spotify, apple, etc so we can stream without youtube?
The first one is on Apple. We’ve got a few things to fix to get the rest up and to get them on other platforms. Trait’s a one (wo)man show right now and a little swamped in the office but plans to get it all figured out soon so they will be uploading properly to all the platforms.
@@Zaldaingerous yall are the best! Love the content, just want to see you continue to grow and crush it

He’s on a Legends exemption. You get 1 legend point for every Classic won, AOY won, and $1 million earned. Each year you take a legend’s spot, you lose one of your legend’s points. I think he may be on his last point, but not positive.
@@Zaldaingerous okay thanks so much me and my dad were talking about that and couldn’t figure it out
Great show! Just like I had the pleasure of sharing the boat with you twice, I was Matt’s marshal twice on Toledo Bend as well. Great guy and, like you said, he will tell it like it is. I had to laugh at his comment about his facial expression and hole poaching because it happened the first time I was his marshal and he got a bit upset and let it be known to that angler. I would have been scared. LoL
Let’s just cut the BS Jeff needs to buy bass fishing only way to save it.
BASS was getting stale. The Elite is better with the fresh crop of anglers.
