  • Chris and Trait sit down with Forward Facing Sonar Pioneer and the man who claims the 5 largest bass ever filmed cast to catch, Josh Jones, in this Podcast Episode of The Bilge x Battle Born Batteries. Josh discusses all the unwarranted fishing forum hate, addresses the many allegations lobbed at him following his big fish successes the past 3 years, and goes into the details of what he's learned as one of the world's earliest masters of Forward Facing Sonar technology.

Josh Jones comments on catching catfish using FFS , I have to say is the best fishing I’ve done yet. It’s 9/2023 and have been hammering big cats using FFS and 1/2 oz spintail jigs and spinning gear. Just happened to be on the Texas Fishing Forum and saw a post about this. Read most of the comments then watched the video. Really liked the interview but I have liked all the interviews you guys have done. Keep up the great work! TFF is all haters for the most part that’s part of the reason it’s irrelevant these days. I never see anything but negativity on there. Not even sure why I went to look at it now other than just boredom. Seems like its nothing but a place to argue where many people say stuff they would never say in person cause they can hide behind a screen name (handle). Also it would be cool, like someone above mentioned to see you guys talk to Milliken as well. He went through a lot of hate as well .

    Many people might think that what happened at O.H. Ivie Revervoir in 2021 is an anomaly. But TPWD Biologist John Dennis, who loved to fish and regularly came to bass club meetings, told us that this day and those from the past - were coming. Many of us kept asking him and other TPWD personnel to add many more Florida fingerlings - but he just kept saying that the fish would make their own fingerlings and to just wait for the day when everything would come together...
    John said they (TPWD) had a plan to make Ivie a trophy bass lake and it was underway. Part of the plan included special regs for keeping certain size fish and not too long ago taking undersize fish out of the lake...
    John Dennis has retired from TPWD, and so have many others, or the Good Lord has taken them, but I just want to thank TPWD fisheries personnel (past and present) for all their effort in making this happen. And thank you John - for understanding the biology and science of all this. You were right my friend and we are seeing one of the greatest events in fishing history as it unfolds right before us. It is what we dreamed about but what you built. Thank you.

    Loved all of your comments, on fishing, Crappie scopes, buttheads, and even deranged law men. I'm and old fart, started fishing after I came back from Nam in '69 because, my first love was hunting but, I'd hunted and been hunted by the ultimate game, man. Just couldn't do it anymore. So went fishing.
    So a couple of years into it, I caught my first 6 1/2 lb bass on Toledo Bend after the 60+ casts at a down tree in a creek bend against the bank, on a baby hellbender no 'name' crank baits available at that time. Had to be one there. Had it bad in 3 bass clubs and fishing little $ tournaments down here in Texas. Almost missed out on the love of my life, when I met her, my current wife (45 years ago), I only asked her out once a month or so, because wanted to make top 6 in all three clubs. Found out she liked to fish, so she started pre-fishing with me. In 2007 found myself out of work, with a job offer in CA with a company I had worked with for 10 years prior in Texas. Went out there to work, and started fishing with a friend I met out there. Fished the Delta and all the little lakes around Morgan Hill. Coyote lake, they drew the lake down because they found there was a fault running under the dam. I had fished it once when full, the guys at the coyote tackle shop talked about 16's & 18's that had came out of that lake. I started fishing every Sunday after church on local lakes. Decided to go back to Coyote and just walk the bank, since pressure had been off. Walked the bank throwing a BBZ all the way from the ramp to the head water creek, about 2 1/2 miles noting. Had 2 rods one with the new line for me fluorocarbon and another with braid. Dreaming of those big girls I'd heard that lived in that little lake. Got to the head waters nada, there's a gravel bar across the entrance to the upper creek, big pool about 20 feet deep, but the lake is down about 10 feet. I decide to fish a little of the creek before I call it a day. Step over and up on a flat shore that's about 8 foot above the water. Chunk that BBZ across it and start slowly working it back and notice to my right coming down the creek towards the big hole 2 bass ones about 8, the others about 10. I gauge my baits progress to intersect these fish as they came down out of the ditch of the creek and head for the open pool. They look, they change their cadence, they swim up to it, give it a good look in that crystal clear water, and swim away into the hole. As I stood there for another hour or so, that hole filled up with big bass. The 8 pounder was the littlest. My PB is a 15/6 out of Falcon, and I've caught a few thousand bass prior to this day. There's at least a 15 in the hole, maybe as big as 17. There are at least 15 queens in that hole. Out of the one each type tackle box I was carrying, I threw from A to Z at them, worked worms, jigs, rattletraps, lizards, cranks everything at them, they would just move out of the way when I brought them to them. Then off to my right I see the queen show up, this fish is the biggest I've ever seen, she's 18 if she's an ounce, got a big scar across the top of her head, looked like she'd been hit by a prop. Now I'm hyperventilating, what the heck, what to do, then I remember I have an 8" huddleston (trout) swim bait in the bottom of that box. I go to the box, pull it out, tie it on the set up with fluorocarbon, only knot I regularly used at that time was a polymer, tie it up, then take some trout scent and give her a good basting, always out of view of the bass, pitch it across the pond. Start her back down towards the pile of queens, that sexy roll, and gentle sway just like a stupid stocker trout would swim like. The Bertha peels out of the hole slowly, then picks up speed, then streaks over to the Huddleston and slams it, just swallows it. Watching this the Testosterone goes through the roof. I rare back with a hook set, that I regret to this day. She's hooked, she has the huddleston in her throat but I have a rod in my hand that is disconnected. The damned knot came un-tied. She's got a huddleston stuck in her mouth and I'm in 'no no I can't believe this land'. All I can do is watch her. The only huddleston I had. It took her almost 30 minutes fighting with that bait to finally spit it out. Then I go to work, doesn't matter if the see me or not, have to get that hud back. Rattletrap sinks, got trebles, took about 10 tries and I finally snag the hud and slowly bring it back in. Dump the Fluoro set-up grab the braid set-up, time for war. Tie her up grease her down, all out of view, make another throw across the pond, start her towards the herd again. The bass that I would say is 17 lbish peels our of the crowd and starts slowly moving toward the hud. Yes, it's gonna happen, yes. No Bertha runs out and head butts the 17 knocking her away from the hud that she was about to eat. DAMNIT YOU BITCH just automatically got screamed out of my mouth. I stop the retrieve the hud settles to the bottom and lays there. Now Bertha swims about 4 feet over to it and does that Yawn - Mouth flush a big bass can do and blew on the hud. She did it three times. Then she turned to the whole herd watching and does it towards them three times, then back on the hud. I spent another hour and a half as it got dark swimming that hud through the herd, couldn't even interest the lowly 8 lber of the herd. Good thing I didn't have a dupont stick bait, might have used it that day. A week later I made my move back to Texas. Will never forget Bertha. Hope she lived a long safe life.
    Originally from Okla. have lived most my life in Texas. Got the bass bug after my little stint with Uncle Sam in the Jolly Green Jungle and still have it to this day. When I can scrape an extra $2K together gonna give You a ring Josh. Hey to not have to fight that trolling motor quite so much, I put a 'rite hite' lowrance forward looking "Crappie Scope". Chirs follow you regularly lots of luck this year. Take no prisoners, get R done. Tight lines guys! Oh, and Josh, drop the polymer and go with a west coast cinch you'll be a happier man for it.

    I had been thinking and remembering years ago about some studies done on bass and fishing pressure. They had some lakes I believe it was in California where they had shut the lake down to boating and found that the big bass had moved back into shallow water. I wonder over time and with FFS the fish that moved to open water to avoid pressure will push them back to the shallow waters.

    What a great interview. The only question I would have asked is does Josh believe that FFS has taken a little shine away from catching 10lbers. Especially because he caught 1 10 before FFS and over 100 after. Regardless the cream always rises to the top, and the people who are good without FFS are good with FFS.

    • @Zaldaingerous
      @Zaldaingerous  Год назад +1

      I do think for him, maybe it’s taken the gleam away from a 10lber but only bc teeners (which was once almost impossible) now have a gleam.

      @@Zaldaingerous that was my thought as well. The 13s , 14s and 15s are the new 10s with FFS. Thanks for the reply!

    Big fan of all of you ! Josh seems legit ! I’m a Washington state tournament angler and the fishing up here in the Pacific Northwest for bass is incredible. We just have no way of making it to the next level here due to lack of exposure it’s a blessing and a curse if you’re trying to make it to the next level. We just had a tournament on the river here in Tri cities Washington and there was 3 bags weighed in over 26 pounds. Two of which were 29 pound bags. Would love to run into you guys up here one day !

    First my new favorite fishing podcast!! Second I want to see what are lakes we be like in five years. Will the fish adapt to technology are will it kill are lakes. Yes I have livescope. I’m in Missouri and from what i can see crappie has already been affected. People eat more bass then you think. There is going to have to be slot and lower limits to support technology. What’s your opinion. Boxing fish is a problem I think in hot weather.
