they set their formation like that so they make a surround sound effect. in every concert they are in a concave formation and singers are mixed so the sound would always stay in the center..watch their impromptu videos to see how they deliberately arrange their formations

The Philippine Madrigal Singers also called Madz started in the University of the Philippines (UPMS) and is the first ever choir to win the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing twice (1997,2007). They’ve been invited all over the world and they do concert tours almost every year (like this performance when they were requested to sing at that church but not the actual concert) and also perform as resident artist in the Cultural Center of the Philippines. I had the privilege to get to know them in a more personal level. They have a lot of good quality RUclips videos if you want to explore more of their angelic voices.
They are arranged in SATB format and singing in a semi-circle. One of the members (perfect pitch) in the middle gives the pitch and with this arrangement, they can feel each others breathing, thus, they sing without a conductor. They are currently under the directorship of Mark Anthony Carpio who sits/stands at the right end of the circle. For them, the audience is the other half of the circle.
If you guys want to listen to more of their songs, I suggest this song (they sing in multiple languages)- We Beheld Once Again The Stars “Rivedere le Stelle (Dante’s Inferno)- sung in Italian which is one of the 5 songs that they performed in the 2007 European Grand Prix.

Standing in S-A-T-B gives a fuller sound because the audience hear them in all sides and angles. Also, note that the 4 at the middle T-S-B-A is the core group. If you are part of the group, it takes time, training and talent to reach the middle and be part of the core.

    • @booboy0421

Just to correct, they are singing with a conductor. Mark Carpio is the conductor. However, it is the signature of MADZ where the conductor does not conduct like how we usually perceive a choir conductor. If you watch closely, Mark is moving. It is through his movements and eye contact where the cue is coming from.

their trademark is sitting down in a semi-circle with the conductor seated at the left end of the circle. The unusual formation was patterned from banquet style in the renaissance period where hosts and guests would gather around for merriment and sing-songs in a semi-circle formation before the the meal was served. Also, the alternating male female position is to achieve a surround sound and its Soprano, Tenor, Alto, Bass alternating to achieve a balanced surround sound and all members are top-rated soloists.

This particular performance is so moving it brings goosebumps and tears to the eyes with its pure vocal simplicity and beauty.

As a choir member myself years ago we look up to them in terms of discipline, perfection, performance. They sing in SATB format, semi-circle form with the person in the middle providing the pitch. One of my fav is their cover of 'The Coconut Nut'. It's hilarious but delivered perfectly the MADZ (short for Madrigals, UP Madrigals) way! Thank you for this reaction. It brings so much memories. 💙

I was a choir member before and Madz really is our idol. Even the podium (positioning of SATB), we got it from them. Usually, if you are an alto, you will be with them but in this, you'll be placed depending on your ranking during quartet exam. The middle quartet is usually the foundation and so on for the other quartet. I missed singing and listening to Madz.

This is one of the very few performances that the Madrigals (or Madz) are singing standing up. They usually are sitting in a semicircle. The conductor and musical director - Mark Anthony Carpio - is singing with them, positioned at the left-most. The way they are arranged is not the usual for choirs where sopranos are grouped together and so forth. Every 4 members you see standing (or sitting) close to each other function as a complete unit composed of a soprano, a base, an alto (or counter tenor), and a tenor.

they're all standing in this video because there's no place for them to sit 😅...seriously, quite often, when they have concerts, they'd be sitting and still be singing so effortlessly (or so they make it look) and beautifully ❤️
