Sirtaki or syrtaki (Greek: συρτάκι) is a popular dance of Greek origin, choreographed by Giorgos Provias for the 1964 film Zorba the Greek. It is not a traditional Greek folkdance, but a mixture of the slow and fast versions of the hasapiko dance. The dance, and the accompanying music by Míkis Theodorakis, are also called Zorbá's dance, Zorbas, or "the dance of Zorba".

I used to sing this to my husband, and he always hugged me, laughing. I had it played at his funeral, but I had no laughing eyes or hugs anymore. Just remembering the great Mexican-born actor Anthony Quinn and the final scene of the movie Zorba the Greek in which the British man asked Quinn to teach him how to dance. And the magic of the scene, a jewel of world cinematography, it became dining room topic of conversation all over the planet when 20th Century Fox released the movie in December 1964.
we won't forget....nor will we ever forget the amazing Andre and his magnificent orchestra who all have such fun entertaining their beloved audience and fans...

I adore Greeks, their music, wine, hospitality, generous nature's. I've visited most of the Islands, and spent 4 years in Pafos. I miss them so much the food and most of all the music. Although, this is always played for tourists, you can't sit still whilst listening 😁

Great music by great composer who unfortunately passed away yesterday. May his soul rest in peace. I read an article about him on BBC site in Russian. They wrote that famous Sirtaki dance was based on Greek dance of warriors called Hasapiko. I think it's a mistake because Hasapiko is famous dance of Greek butchers from Ottoman time Constantinople. Kasap in Turkish means butcher .
You are not good informed..this dance is based on the traditional dance of Crete.. 4.000 years old at least...from that area of Crete with name chania came mikis..that's why he want to be buried there....🇬🇷

My auntie told me that our great grandmother was half Greek and so I really appreciate the Greek dance art & culture. Theodorakis was specially Blessed when composed this music. Sirtaki is much more than an instrumental music. It's a musical masterpiece that translates the genuine Greek lifestyle. I believe it', and always will be, the best translation of the usual Greek People happiness. Sirtaki also, was a magic conspiration though Anthony Quinn's performance in cinema. I can say the same about Andre Rieu. When people listen to the first Sirtaki chords playing, it begins an uncontrollable wish to dance. Theodorakis got eternity much more before than he passed way. He always will be remembered in all the World by his masterpiece. Greek party is not a party without Sirtaki. I'm not a Greek descendant, and my heart beats so strong. I can imagine this feeling into the Greek hearts. Certainly, Heaven was in party when received Theodorakis' soul.
