- "Sometimes the Stars" is a gorgeous new song from Adelaide, Australia band The Audreys, taken from their 2010 album of the same name. The accompanying short animated film, produced by Luke Jurevicius and directed by Ari Gibson & Jason Pamment, is about a lost girl's journey through a surreal landscape, and her yearning to make a connection in this distant yet strangely familiar world.

After playing through Hollow Knight, I could recognize Ari's style anywhere.
Yea the eyes especially along with the thin legs and just the overall character form
also the tram, with it's tickets. and the lighthouse.
Its pretty cool how I watched this first when it came out and would inevitably run into the same artist again with the game though. *insert boomer outlook on how the internet brings us together*
No cost too great.
No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering.
It’s noticeable if you play hollow knight alot
I think the glowing girl is the embodiment of the hooded girl's star.
Ari gibson art! Wow!
I got to meet ari when I was a kid while he was making this video. My dad worked with him and while I don’t remember too much of the interaction cus I was a little tacker, my dad insists he’s the sweetest, most humble guy. He absolutely deserves all the success he’s made for himself
I immediately noticed a familiar artistic style in the beautiful animation. I had the confirmation shortly after reading the credits: Ari Gibson, the artist behind Hollow Knight.
I kinda have a small theory as to what it's about. I think it's about how that little girl sees everyone else moving on with their life and figuring out their purpose. When she still hasn't decided what she wants to do. Then when everything seems at the worst she finds her purpose and shines much brighter than anyone else
Agreed
wow! thats deep
UpriseNova maybe but mine i think we all agree when I say that mine is more happier
I found this animation after seeing it as the background to words about not fearing death by Alan Watts (also on RUclips) This probably coloured my view but I see it as the folk at the tram stop have serious illnesses. The tram is their last days. One gets off and his starlight returns and he walks off with his bonneted wife towards their lit home. Others get off with their stars dark ( they die ) The little girl with faded star goes over the edge ( dies ) in fear and dread. Then starts to fly, fear falls away. No pain. No hell. No judgement. She sees distant bright star. A new young life or herself to be reincarnated or herself before she was born. They walk off together content. This was the message the words conveyed too in the Alan Watts version
You are narrating my life so, I hope you are right
You can really see the style of Hollow Knight shine bright in this animation, Ari really is amazing
indeed he is
I can't fucking believe this. After all these years. I loved this song and the animated short so much back in 2016, I used to watch it everyday because it inspires me. I watched all the animations from Mechanical Apple because of this, and after all these years I became a big Hollow Knight fan, and I *just* discovered that Ari ran this animation studio???? This is crazy. I am going crazy.
team cherry is not an animation studio it's an indie video game team
@@albertrondonmartinez2329 You know that developers from Team Cherry had other jobs before that, right? Ari is an animator.
WAIT A MINUTE THESE GUYS MADE HOLLOW KNIGHT?!?!?!
@@herecomestheboi1285 Yup
I noticed that when the others passengers left, they knew where to get off, and their stars were glowing. It seemed to me that this girl just happened to get on the train but was uncertain of where it went. The other girl at the end touched her star and walked off with her, probably as to say, "I will help you find your light."
EDIT: Forgot to mention that the light probably represents love. That old woman was waiting for that man at the station, and when they met, their stars glowed. The light could also simply mean happiness, since there was that scene of the young girl hugging what I assume to be her father. Then again, you could probably just read the lyrics.
Shiwakao I think the end represents death and the glowing girl is the hooded one's childhood self
Number 29 But that doesn't really connect at all. Why would her childhood self have her current self follow her?
Shiwakao my theory is that they're dead. The stars represent souls and if they're bright they are already designated to go to heaven, which is varied for different people in this world. The girl doesn't know where to go cause none of the stations are hell. But when she falls, she's finally in her place, hell. The blonde girl is a fallen angel, who took pity on the girl's soul and both decide to find a way out of hell, to no avail.
Not an animation, but a masterpiece
also a song
Please, tell me that I'm not the only one who cried after watching this animation.
Ali Here with you.
so who else is here because one of the directors of this video is also one of the creators of Hollow Knight?
I am here because I was in the comments of 'Sleep Dealer - Nozomi'
I just love the song and video. I hadn't the slightest clue Ari was behind this beautiful animation, but wow does it makes sense now.
You caught me.
Huh, didn't know but it's kinda cool that somebody made something this cool and hollow knight
Fuckin’ psychics man, every video.
so is this the original video?
i saw the post rock version nozomi
2D Animation: Ari Gibson in the description, I guess.
Alice Croquette yes it is
the one you saw is stolen... I saw the stolen one first, too .-.
i prefer the stolens music
Kushina Uzumaki same
I remember watching this years ago before Hollow knight became a game when I was a kid. Can't believe Ari gave me both nostalgia and a great game.
The fact that the animator of this made Hollow Nights the game is incredible ^_^ ! You can really see the similarities on the animation.
Rest in peace Tristan
Here I am confessing, you're lost to me now
I'm on a train telling strangers, about you
How you're still looking fine
How you ease my worried mind
Flong, summers and wine
Yeah, you saved me
But sometimes the stars seem closer than they should
Like the more I knew, the less I understood
And the further that you got from me, the more I felt like I could see
The more I wondered if I should trust the stars
'Cos sometimes the stars.
Here I am obsessing, that I lost you somehow
On a train full of strangers, and you
Every star look the same
All of those faces without names
They all drifted away
Is that when you left me?
'Cus sometimes the stars seem closer than they should
Like the more I knew, the less I understood
And the further that you got from me, the more I felt like I could see
The more I wondered if I should trust the stars
cos sometimes the stars
sometimes the stars
sometimes the stars
sometimes the stars
'sometimes the stars...
K my interpretation of this video is that perhaps she had her heart broken. Someone she loved is no longer in her life. She doesn't have hope and she wanders through life without really having a destination and watches other people who seem to know where they are going. Finally her life falls off the rails and when she reaches that point, the person who she loves helps her back up. They are her *light* and her *hope* that is missing. And they are her *destination* that she was missing.
Opal Sky Didn't think of it that way. Good interpretation!
Opal Sky As soon as I read this, I re-thought the entire video...that is an amazing interpretations of this video and I now think the same way...
Been replaying this occassionally over the course of 5 years lol
Steam friend sent this to me one night. we don't talk any more but I still listen to this song. I still love it the same after all these years and i have played it to others
I absolutely love it! Music, animation - everything is so beautiful. The one thing I don't get is how... how in the world this masterpiece has so few views???
CMA raid! :) Nice animation!
+BoneBrain CMA made this way better with his song, the video itself is brilliant already.
+BoneBrain Who is CMA raid?
+Peanut thats so true
+Cystlib CMA is a chillstep music producer who made an alternative song to this animation. if you RUclips search for cma fragments of the past you'll sure find it :) it's amazing
I think everybody agrees that this animation is great.
Rest In Peace beautiful Tristan. Playing with the angels now. Love to your family and your beautiful partner Lea xxx
Ari Gibson you are a Genius and soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo talented
Ah, it's a shame the stolen version of this video(with a different song, that I'll admit feels more fitting) has immensely more views than this one. It didn't even credit this nor the artists!
Mekiko Senpai So true
Mekiko Senpai (-_-) look at the description and the date
I'd suggest you do the same, this video was posted March 2, 2011 while the video I was referring to "Sleep Dealer - Nozomi (Hope)" with 1,627,542 views(far, far more than this video) was uploaded February 27, 2012. And speaking of descriptions, this one credits everyone who worked on this project, while the more popular video only credits the music they swapped out.
Mekiko Senpai i'm not sure if I was good or bad but I was thinking that's you say to her that she stole the video. so I'm French and can you explain in word I will understand?
lemony armant Ah, je vois. Je ne parle pas français, pardon.
It seems we were both mistaken with eachother. Ça va. Though, even if you were mistaken your comment was not very polite! Haha.
By "good or bad" do you mean right or wrong?
A fascinating video. I wish I could figure out the meaning behind it. I can only suppose it's about the bonds we make with others. Strangers leave and meet others, while the girl got on the train with no destination, and had no one waiting for her, and only when everything fell apart did she meet someone. Someone who maybe needed a friend more than she did.
if you liked this, try C.S. Lewis' 'The Great Divorce' ...the first few chapters at least.
Rederex Sounds interesting. I'll look into it.
“I think the star lights represent love... like family... but the girl's didn't glow because she didn't have anyone to love or no one loved her. the bus going off the track represented her suicide and glowing girl was an angel that brought her to heaven so she can finally be loved and happy. ” Someone said this on a re upload of the video.
Bill Pickle That makes a lot of sense, and I kind of suspected it was love, but thought it was more of a broad context, so I wrote it was about bonds.
If the train ride is traveling through life, that would explain why everyone else gets off at different times- they found someone to love. And if the girl didn't find love, then she came to the end of her life without anyone. But the thing is... why does the young girl, the one found in the dark, look like she is lost? She doesn't seem like an angel to take her away. If anything, the protagonist seems like she's the one leading the way.
herofromthedark Well said. That is a more general method of enunciating the idea. Bonds would be a more fitting subject of this video. Although, love is a way of defining relationships but there are different types of love.
i came here true Tom Day - Lost and Found. What a small animation video can do with you..... got tears in my eyes from this video
I find it sad that the stolen version has more views than this. It deserves more credit and it's an amazing song and animation. I really wish this got more recognition than the stolen ones 😔
This is the new benchmark of Australian animation.
Some times i wish worlds like this wouldn't stay unexplained like i want to know what all those other people did when they got off where they went and so on and so forth.
I think i want a sequel to this
"The more I knew, the less I understood". Such beautiful words...that also sum up my physics class in one sentence.
Vedan Desai lol XD
Did anyway else get chills watching this?
this was... rather calming i love it
Still here 🙌
So smooth, nice song and story i mean i gotta say this is really good,i mean the animation is unbelievably good and a this is 4 minutes video, wow must take months to make this.
Lizard Hazard the animation is stolen from sleep dealer
the best animation ive ever seen.
This deserves a lot more attention.
This video deserves milions of views.
How can this wonderful song in the world have only 69,615 views ...and with 2 dislikes ???? God !!
Street Light sent me here. Your stuff is brilliant, you have earned a fan!
This animation need more of it! I just can't believe that there no more of it U_U
the most beautiful animation ive seen in a while
Sometimes.....songs are their own meaning
my god ... the animation and the world created ... this kind of creator deserve more credit and a lot of views, honestly guys (the team that react the animation + music) great job!
Ari Gibson was the animator of this shortfilm. He has a pretty good sense of quality :D if you liked this shortfilm definitely you have to play Hollow Knight, is my favourite videogame and Ari Gibson was the art director.
Ahhh I cant believe I finally found this song again! I forgot the title but ive been looking for this! 😭 thank god!
came here from a Sleep Dealer - Nozomi video. its weird to see the animation with this music, im so used to seeing and hearing it with the other one; im not sure which one fits better :/ this is a good song tho, im glad i found it through the other one
+Minty Green FUCKING THANK YOU!!! I've been trying to remember Sleepdealer since morning, but their name never came to my mind. Had to read the comments. I found you. Thanks!
kheyreddine HADRI
no prob! glad i could help :)
me too
Hello I'm also here from Nozomi.. and I personally feel like the video fits Nozomi better.
Yeah, there was a strange feeling to that song with this video, as it didn't make much sense and seemed eerie. But the Audreys song explains it better, Sleep Dealer set the tone though, and made me search for the meaning behind the animation
music. is art when. you can smell poetry in it, if. you ask me.
this is the most beautiful thing i’ve ever seen.
Reminds me of the train scene of "Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi" movie by Studio Ghibli, but much more sadder.
Wow...the music and the video blends together so well. It nearly brought me to tears.
Wonderful job.
J'ai découvert cette vidéo il y a environ 1 mois ou 2. C'est incroyable que deux personnes qui ne se connaissent pas puissent avoir des images, des scénarios semblables en tête...
i don´t have words for this song.... ;)
Its genuinely amazing how the tone of this video can change so drastically by simply changing the song that plays.
i need a mossbag video confirming the existance of this universe and hollow knight universe being one universe.
Here I am confessing this is a Nice calm song
Amazing film clip.
Best music video I've ever seen
I love this animation the drawings and the song just go perfect together!
This animation is great. I like to think I understand it, as I had to do an English essay on it
I personaly think it is about the 2º war
that's what I thought because if the stars, right?
Psychedelic Sol yes and also the train
Once again I am convinced that Ari Gibson is incredibly talented
People like... like this guys, the artists.
What a beautiful mind has, is this kind of things not violence or shit in his head.
You are amazing Ari.
No
SOOO cute
Just Beautiful. Once a day, I watch that pearl of music and animation. I want to write a story about this girl.
Beautiful Musik and video
Street Light!
The stars are are closer then they should
This is my first time watching the original video, I've seen this under Sad Animation and Nozomi. I think it's stupid for people to take this beautiful animation and change the music to it. I think this song (Sometimes the Stars) suits it better than any other song. That's just my opinion though. I hope the people who 'took' this animation at least asked permission first.
Personally I think that Nozomi fit the animation better. The style seems too dreary for the original song in my opinion. Still would rather the other people posting would give credit to the original and the animators
+Yanessa Berdecia
> Nozomi fit the animation better. - Yeah, right!
> give credit to the original - Yes, I totally agree.
completely agreed! thanks to theperson who pointed it out and gave actual credits to the original video! RREEEEAAAALLYY APPRECIATE IT!!!
Falk Wurnsch - Hold Me fits this animation perfectly and better then this in my opinion. Soul touching experience, he also credited the animation…
Ari gibsons animation is still absolutely beatiful. Often even better than what i see being produced by entire studios.
a really great song indeed
Wow. That was beautiful.
This is so gorgeous, I can't even......glad I found this in my recommended vids.
what an amazing silk SoNg
the song and the video are just so beautiful
@TheAudreysMusic Beautiful. :)
10 ans après, cette chanson et ce clip sont toujours aussi beaux ❤️
One of the best songs ever, really love this.
Stunning, thank you.
Gosh, this made me teary-eyed! It is absolutely marvelous and breathtaking! Love the animation and the music!
So beautiful! Nice work to all involved including, of course, the gorgeous Shiz and co for building such a sweet visual backdrop for the music.
Sleep dealer - Nozomi forever
Amazing...
this is beautiful and i have no idea how anyone could NOT like this.
I wish this one had more views than the stolen one
same
Nice video. I really enjoyed it. Thanks everyone for making it. ❤️
The music and the video is Classic. Just love it.
My teacher Mrs. Hughes left this as a cliffhanger when you seen that the track was broken and we had to wait till tommorow to see the end ... I couldnt wait..
what the hell Micheal Chan why are you here if you don't like it
This clip is quite lovely...
Beautiful
To those of you saying the song doesn't fit the animation: I'm sure the animation wouldn't even exist without this song...
the music and animation are both beautiful. I have found myself listening to The Audreys quite a few times and look up to Ari Gibson as i am an artist and animator myself, so seeing this makes me just feel a sense of joy and peace.
i first found this animation through a video which merged it with the song Nozomi by the Russian post-rock band Sleep Dealer - and that song actually suits the video better.
so... for me, it's that awkward moment when another song suits the animation better.
Awwwwww. So sweet. 🙂
I really love the animation 😄
...the video's giving me 'night on the galactic railroad'-vibes
I first saw this animation back in 2017, except it was nozomi's (superior) version. it stuck and would pop into my head at random times, but could never find it again, despite numerous attempts to do so. Today at about 4:30 am, after several hours of digging through what was essentially the entirety of my seven years worth of youtube history, turns out the one I watched was deleted. I was pretty sure I at least had the right link tho, so after combing through the internet archives I found an old version of the page with a comment that led me here. this thing has been plaguing my mind for the past three years, holy fuck, the immense relief i felt from finding this has cleared my skin, brought back my father, and added several years to my lifespan.
That post rock fan made version of this animator is dope af. Post rock is really magical.
Wonderful music video !! And amazing song.
I absolutely love this video clip and song!
IT'S BEAUTIFUL!
