    Excellent innovation guys. Locking mechanism seems like a good choice. I don't know how I feel about the opposing motor situation. My first thought was possibly a dead cat design so the rear arms are longer to clear the front motors while folding. But sticking to true-x would be better for freestyle. Different arm lengths seems like a possible solution to consider. May need to off-center the arm mounting. My thoughts are more concerned about preventing the need for more add-on's like landing gear. You all are doing awesome. Can't wait for the next round of info.

    • @elMuele
      @elMuele 2 года назад +1

      I would absolutely go for a design with different arm lengths to avoid upside-down motors. Something like HGLRC Rekon7 could serve as inspiration. I could see the front arms be on top and fold in first and out last.

    • @colinhanway3109
      @colinhanway3109 2 года назад

      If you fold the higher set arms first they shouldn't hit the motors on the end of the lower arms if spaced correctly, then you can fold the other arms once those are out of the way. Then it is just a matter of having the arms mounted close enough to the frame that the motor doesn't hit the back end of the already folded arm. If they did that then you would have to be aware of which arms are folded first but you wouldn't need to mount the motors in a funky way.

    Gosh this is by far the most engineered frame since a really long time! Everyone that released a frame was a copy/reference of another but this... this is totally on a different level! That center piece alone will probably be the first none flat carbon fibre part we will see in FPV, unless it will be cut out of aluminium/brass/something. Can't wait for this to be a real product!

    So to take whats being done and sizing it up for a 7"+ long range drone that big platform will allow for bigg batts... I hope to see this go that direction one day💯👊👊😎👌

    I recently replaced some motors on my quad and that made me wonder how you would run the motor wires on this contraption and trough the hinge part? And Talking about cycle times and replacement parts. I am not even sure if the motor wires are motion rated. But these are minor concerns.
    I think what also might help to put all motors in the same direction is to go with more of a dead cat style frame with the rear arms being longer at a steeper angle, so when you fold it the motor is far enough out / large enough to clear the other motor.

    Tommy and Ryan - I did not take the time to look through all of the comments, so please forgive me if this is already been covered. After watching the video several times and watching Ryan fold the frame it looks like the geometry will allow all four Motors to be in an upright configuration. The deciding factor would be that the upper arms would have to fold first followed by the lower arms. Maybe my eyes are deceiving me, but it does look possible to have all four Motors facing up. Love this concept, and I am really looking forward to Flying this frame. Keep up the great work.

    For solving the problem of the landing gear you could put all electronics underneath the arms and then use the actual bottom carbon fiber plate that's the landing gear to drop weight because more weight equals needing more durability

    • @seablake4116
      @seablake4116 2 года назад

      Also The motors don't have to be reverse mounted and top mounted because you can just deploy one pair of arms at a time and then put one away at a time and as long as the arms are the correct length for it nothing should interfere

  • @svengineer59
    @svengineer59 2 года назад

    Have u considered using tilted axles for the arms, to have them on the same level in the unfolded state but fold to slightly different angles to get past each other, and not interfere with the motors? Using the magnetic force of the motors to keep it closed could also be a thing, so you would be less constraind with the locking mechanism for the unfolded state.

  • @martylawson1638
    @martylawson1638 2 года назад

    Looking forward to where this is going! Tapering the sides of the locking block will let you adjust out tolerance variations. Consider making the locks a detent that can unlock when overloaded in a crash to limit forces on the hinges.

  • @sylvanlight120

    If you end up alternating the motor mounting front and back.... It'll be the rear motors wanting to be on the under side and front motors on top... Better clearance off the ground with fronts, and better clearance overhead with the rear motors... Marginally.

    Great work guys. When you mentioned knife locks, and started to describe it, I thought you were going to go with a spring loaded button. It might be a little more user friendly if you could work out a spring loaded lock instead of a screw, so that it's just a button press? I bet you could work out getting the arms on the same plane too if you really wanted to.

    • @RyanHouston
      @RyanHouston 2 года назад +1

      If you watch at 4:33, you can see that I did work out a spring loaded mechanism. I also started designing around springs normally used in automatic knives, but this introduced a bit more complexity too early in the design. I'm designing the pivot to have room for a spring option down the road, but for now we're just solving the basic folding and retention parts.

  • @rawk-steadyfpv1571

    With the arms being offset, I wonder how that would affect the flight as far as yaws, normal forward or backward flying, or even just hovering.. What about freestyle tricks like flips, rolls, power loops, split s, etc. Would it work with normal betaflight settings, or will there be a custom tune for it. I guess the next step would be to build two solid frame mockups. One with the higher set arms in front and the other with the higher set arms in the rear. Figure out if there are any negatives or positives before moving on. I'd be interested in seeing that flight footage. 🤙

    • @xgoodvibesx
      @xgoodvibesx 2 года назад

      Betaflight won't care and it won't affect the flying characteristics much. Lower set goes in front as putting the higher in front causes turbulence for the rears. Offset quads were a thing for a brief while, but the benefits of theoretically better flying characteristics due to cleaner air flow wasn't worth the trade-off.

    • @rawk-steadyfpv1571
      @rawk-steadyfpv1571 2 года назад

      If that's the case then you can't do Matty flips, backward dives, or any kind of backward flying. Sorry Cricket 😞 I sumise that the higher set being in front would give a better all around performance. I don't think we'll know until it's tested.

    Can see a lot people being concerned about the inverted motors. I get that it’s a proven concept I.e the DJI matrice 30 but in terms of longevity of the drone after a few landings on concrete you’re guaranteed to have to replace props & motors constantly. Maybe not very noob friendly… but we’ll see!

  • @Atlas_FPV

    What if it was a deadcat frame shape? Would the arms overlap in such a way that would allow all motors to be on top? Usually deadcat shave different length arms front and back. Like the Apex DC uses 5” arms on the front and 6” arms on the back to keep the geometry right, but that inch might allow overlap.

  • @MythicLionMan

    What if the bottom arm had an 'L' shape, with the motor on the tip of the short part of the 'L'? Then you'd fold in the top arms first, then fold in the bottoms, and the motors from the bottom arm would stick out a bit more than the top arm motors. The bottom motors could even be on a riser to be on the same plane as the tops (this could also help the bell of the motor clear the other arms).
    By making the length and angle of the arms different the motors could all be in the same position relative to the arm pivots.
    I think that all four motors could tuck in this way, but I'm less sure about the front and rear tri-blade props interfering (but if you're using floppy proppy's then this isn't an issue.)

    • @swissfreek
      @swissfreek 2 года назад

      Can’t speak for them, but with the overlap, my guess is the wires go around the outside. Like, they go into the frame at the nose and tail. That way they go completely around the whole folding mechanism and not anywhere that the arms would close onto them. Then you use some racewires down the length of the arm to keep everything flat and stuck down and minimize the amount of flexible moving wires.

    My engineering brain loves stuff like this....not a fan of the concept. I'm surprised people want a folding arm kwad. My 5" didn't take up that much room to begin with. Is this a problem I'm not aware of? Silicone wire will fatigue with repetitive bending making this idea kind of moot
    Now a good light 7" is what we really need...there's only a dozen at most out there and a lot of them are porkers.

    Looks promising.
    However there's something that concerns me: we're aiming for something durable, and yet with foldable/rotating arms, how can we make sure that a direct lateral hit to an arm won't fold it to the closed position and make it impossible to fly back, where a non-fondable not-that durable ordinary frame would be able to fly back home?
    Let me know if my concern is not clearly stated.

      I feel like you don't understand how this mechanism works. There is no way for it to fold closed without undoing the thumb screw.

    So many compromises, weight, complexity, parts, geometry, crash damage.Why not work on a design with super quick replaceable arms that have electrical contacts that plug into ESC contacts. The frame would have PCB traces to a 4in1 ESC. Think: F1 pit stop tire change. Just sayin'.

    just to much to go wrong our shit gets f...ed up so much anyway it may be great for easy flying but for hard rips and crashing maybe no so much bro sorry tommy but ill still keep watching hope i get proved wrong reliabilay of motor wires arms folding in in light crash that you could fly out of and the big one upside down motors i think for the folding just a simple sping loadid pin on each arm would work better like i say no shade tommy i love your stuff but this is to much to go wrong i think
