  • Some people were interested in how I make my steamboxes for bending guitar sides. Well, this is my way of doing it.
    Woods I have been successful with: walnut(s), apple, plum, pear, cherry, maple, ash, oak, black locust, bocote, rosewood, chestnut.
    Enjoy.

    Was a professional carpenter/cabinet maker. Never had anything that nice. We just had a length of pvc pipe with a plug and ahole for the hose at one end, and a rag stuffed in the other end. Hardest wood I ever had to bend was Teak. Thanks for this.

    Thank you, I personally used a bending iron, and have been looking into a better process. It would be very nice if you could put together a video of the bending process, and how you make your jigs for ease of bending, various thicknesses etc... How do figured woods bend? Anyhow, thank you very much, very informative.

      Hey there. There is not much to the bending process. You can see it in my building videos. I take the hot wood from the steambender and immediately bend it over the jigs I have for the respective guitar type and then clamp them onto the jig where the pieces stay for 24 hours before I take them out and put them in the next jig. The figured wood I used so far have bent well but need to be a bit thinner than non-figured woods to bend evenly.

      I bend it over a hot pipe. You wet the wood by spraying it constantly and then apply soft pressure on the hot pipe. I use a TV-satellite dish wall mount and a heat gun.

    Dear Gabi, great video! But one question: wouldn't it be good to oil or lacquer the inside to avoid the wood of the box absorb so much moisture? perhaps the box will last longer?? thanks and stay healthy ;-)

    • @GabiM3112
      @GabiM3112  2 года назад

      I thought of that, too but what makes the box break is actually only the parts, where steam can do harm, like with the srews, so you have to seal them or use such that won't break or get rusty.
      Only the lid which is not held in place/shape by screws is prone to being altered in shape by moisture, so I cover that with the foam rubber. I'm not sure how well potential laquer inside will take the heat/steam of 100°C. Maybe using some kind of foil might do the job but that won't smell as good. I love steaming days...

    • @GabiM3112
      @GabiM3112  Год назад

      Hi there, how thick the wood is depends on the species. I take it down so that it gets wobbly. harder woods go thinner than softer ones. 2mm is not a bad guess but sometimes I take off a bit more with very hard and figured woods.

      Zur Zeit der Messung hab ich so durchschnittlich eine Gitarre im Monat gebaut und dabei die Box so nach 1,5 Jahren erneuert, allerdings nicht, weil es mit der "alten" nicht mehr ging, sondern die schon mitgenommen aussah - hauptsächlich da, wo die Box verschraubt war, weil der Dampf die Schrauben angegriffen hat. Also entweder rostfreies Material verwenden, oder die Stellen abdichten, was ich mit der hier gemacht habe.

    Is it not necessary to make the inside waterproof or heat resistant?

    • @GabiM3112
      @GabiM3112  2 года назад

      Err... not to my experience. Why would it need to be that? The steam builds and condenses on the top inside and some goes out through the small holes I made for pressure reduction, since I want heat but not pressure inside the box. The condensation water then goes to the bottom end, where it runs out through a hole on the bottom where I catch it in a flat container. The wood of the box can take the heat and moisture and after the process it will just dry.
      You could try to put some kind of plastic sack inside but then you wouldn't need a box at all and could use the sack itself a s a steam "box". Some people do that.

    • @GabiM3112
      @GabiM3112  Год назад

      Hallo, Martin.
      Das tut mir Leid. Hm. 3,5 mm ist meiner Einschätzung nach zu dick zum Biegen bei dieser Einwirkzeit. Da reichen 30 Minuten in der Dampfbox wahrscheinlich nicht aus. Ich biege so bei 2,3-2,5mm, d.h. du solltest die Seiten dünner machen, bevor du sie biegst und bei gewissen Hölzern auch länger dämpfen.
      Ich lasse die Sachen in lauwarmem Wasser liegen. Eine halbe Stunde sollte reichen, oft aber auch länger. Dann könntest du noch ein Metallblech außen auf das zu biegende Holz legen, um gleichmäßig Druck zu machen.
      Der Ahorn sollte sich gut biegen lassen. Eiche ging bei mir auch gut, war aber halt nicht so dick.

• @GabiM3112
      @GabiM3112  2 года назад

      Well, you can steam bend it but it goes back almost to its original form after 24 hours in the jig, so it simply doesn't keep the shape. I don't know the scientific explanation why some woods bend better than others and others don't. It most likely has to do with their properties, such as moisture, density, etc., which you can read up. Soft woods for instance don't bend well either. In wood libraries you'll find information about steam bending properties of woods. Unfortunately not all, so you will have to try to find out.
