Not only did this guy make a chair for the first time on a huge time crunch, he also did it while recording and filming to make this into a 30-minute video, AND the chair looks great too. Literally incredible, I doubt many people could produce a similar outcome (especially with the fact a woodshop wasn't used!)
Give this guy a real workshop, lean back and see him take over the world! A result like this, clearly with limited space, stuff from the kitchen cabinets and powertools that look like they were born in the 80´s, is pretty damn impressive!
Honestly, it's a really nice chair. As someone who has done a lot of upholstery, I was screaming to cover the chair before mounting it on the frame but you did not hear me lol The fabric makes it look a little off, but the chair itself is extremely impressive, especially with the lack of tools and work space. I actually love the modified design more than your original, it looks so sleek! Overall, gorgeous build, and it was very fun watching you! New subscriber for sure.
It's a fantastic looking chair (if you kind of squint when you look at the fabric). I'm very tempted to go with that style for my own office chair. I hadn't even thought of using my laser cutter for something like this.
Man, you’re a true artist! You made a chair (manual skills), used multiple 3D softwares, used many drawing programs (from what I could tell, procreate on iPad, photoshop on the computer), learned to sew, shot the whole video (even doing artistic angles like the one where there’s sawdust falling on the camera), and even edited it wonderfully! Amazing job, subscribed
holy crap, the editing is insane, this is million sub-worth production value! I honestly love this, it's like a more chilled out michael reeves, and I am here for it!
every time I see one of your videos it gives motivation to go and work on my own projects and videos. then I remember that its late at night, I need to go to sleep, and I have homework to do for tommorow. hopefully I will still have that motivation tommorow. great video though! cant wait for the next one!
I love that your ideas are nuts and I also love the chair, but I love most that you keep it up and consistently keep going towards your goal after countless obstacles. That is a feat my man. Well done.
The design is pretty good IMO. You should definitely pursue it further I think. With a custom 'stand' for the wheels and new fabric it could look really rad. graet video as always-
Well done man, great little project that actually looked like it involved a heck of a lot of learning and it’s always scary working to solid deadlines like that of the competition! As someone else said - you’re juggling all that with actually producing a quality 30 minute video. Very entertaining - thanks!
I’m still so shocked this channel only has 80k subs. Looking forward to when you have a few million and are raking in that ad revenue for even bigger projects, man. Best wishes
I think the best design is when the back support goes directly into the base, rather than both connecting through the seat. But that's a limit of the hardware you have available.
@2:49, ways to measure the angles: 0) Bolt/pin a straight edge that will now be your reference for horizontal. Buy/make/borrow an angle finder. Thicker is better so you can reach both surfaces (of the horizontal straight edge and the chair’s support). 1) You could also do some trig by measuring the triangle that the two supports are part of. CAD (cardboard added design) will be your friend here. Again I would reference those holes by bolting or pinning your CAD model to the chair. Either you have protractor or can use trig to find the angles.
For that dowel-connection at 5:10--5:15--, I recently learned of a glueless way there --- the dowel is a harder wood and drier than ambient, and barely passing; it gets wedged in and swells to keep hold. This way environmentally friendly, safer-for-the-worried-and-affluent-well, wood panels get made in Germany.
Did you consider turning the fork that holds the back rest around, and mounting the "arms" to the bottom of the chair and the plate to the backrest? It looks like there would have been enough space between the arms to fit the foot of the char between.
That chair looks really great, actually. Yes it has flaws and clearly shows it was done by a beginner - but a beginner *builder*, not a beginner *designer*. The maple veneer is fine, but I actually think the sanded plywood would have looked great. I mean, you'd want to do it all over from scratch so you didn't have all of the extra seams from the multiple redesigns, but I like the idea of showing off the lasercut plywood as a feature. I know from experience that as frustrating as much of this build was that the last thing you want to think about now is chair, but a version 2 integrating all of your new knowledge and skill would be amazing. Maybe enter the competition again next year?
One of the original ideas was to keep the plywood edge like you mention and I think that it would have looked nice but when I rotated it to construct it I didn't like the idea as much, if there was a way to keep all the grain together I think it would been better. I definitely want to try another competition now
11:00 To be quite honest, that's the only way to install threaded inserts if you're not using absurdly high grade forged stainless ones. I don't think I've ever made a piece using them where at least one didn't break if I tried to put them in with whatever drive type they came with.
Out of everything you've mentioned, I still can't understand why there's been no note on why you didn't have the body and frame separatable, so that you could just stitch the fabric directly onto it, then have inset screws to make it detachable? All in all it's very cool, and really an amazing effort. Let's see a chair v2 with more improvements!
I think this video shows how optimized chair production has become. Designing a chair is so deceptively difficult, that's why we have design competitions like this. Also if you're in the midwest, I have access to a woodshop and CNC if you ever need parts made?
you should have made all the joints from metal and then just add covers with the wood after the fabric that would have been easier and looked a lot better either way i really enjoyed the video
I just love how people buy top of the line, most expensive iPads just to slap them inside the cheapest folio case on the market 😆 On the side note - 2:50 - I would seriously be scared to even touch that...
Interesting. You know that idea floating inside your head for some time but you just don't get to it? Even have a donor chair... I think I'll screenshot the critiques part. Also, postmortem analysis would be nice. :D
Hi. I just wanted to say that YOU ARE SO COOL. one of the coolest people i know exist. I wanna be just like you. I wanna know what you know. Any advice? I wanna know about graphic design, 3D printing, and wood work. I am literally thinking of not going to do phd because i wanna learn this instead.
It's feels like going to snap in a month. maybe less than that. xd I've had so many solution for the problems in the project. now I want to build something similar. but I didn't have the gut to do it. xd Great content sir.
The first fabric was at Joann's Fabric, I do not recall the name off hand. The second fabric was actually from Walmart of all places and it was a poly blend.
Just like always, an insane video. Hats off to you! But can we please start a go fund me to get you a proper cordless drill? 😅 Watching you drive in wood screws with this monstrosity hurts me a little haha
The video is great, an epolstry person to get some pointers would have really helped. I'm not that person but I'm pretty sure they would say every material chosen was wrong 😂 There must be a cushion, sowing, ect part of youtube right?
It is in the final notes at the end but essentially I don't really use armrests so I was going back and forth on if I should make them and I just ran out of time to complete them so it made my choice for me. I think it would look better to have made them.
Lol your shark trim game is weak but I understand it took me 10 plus years to get good at it. You can staple it into the piece if its made of wood with 14mm staples. I gotta make a RUclips channel haha

Bro the filming part is not that hard
@@mobyhuge I would love to see you film a video like this under a deadline. If it’s so easy- make one.
The amount of effort you put into your editing does not go unnoticed. Your editing is beautiful.
The editing in this video is world class tier, INSANE editing, and yeah the chair is SICK.
0:20 I went 0_0, paused the video and walked around the house for a few minutes trying to comprehend how that transition made sense.
There's a reason the left arm "fell off"
Good to see you again
The attention to detail in the editing does not go unnoticed. Great video!!! 🎉
The real prize was the chair you made along the way.
You are so cool, your sense of art and creativity shines through in your editing! Keep it up!
I’m really happy to see a new video, I’m learning from you to really dive into details
Genuinely extremely happy to hear that. Details is where all the fun is
@@Ideal_Ideamy personal idea it’s to make a floating desk (L shape)
I have a 3d model of it. If you can take a look at it

I love this guy,missed u n Ur content by the way,glad to u back

Is the chair perfect? No but you were fun to watch. I would listen to the 2 hours of Ted Talk. Very cool project.
You should enter a video editing contest, pretty awesome!
I like how your special fabric was basically t-shirt material
Laser cuter / 3 axis CNC machine are powerful towels. Basically replaces your entire shop if you know how to design.
Amazing Craftsmanship 👍🏻👍🏽👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
