I agree. I've been buying DVDs since 1999 and felt I needed to get everything. In the last ten years or so, I just buy what I love. Buying shit just so it can still on a shelf and collect dust isn't my style anymore.
AMEN, brother…some of these RUclipsrs drive me NUTS with their collecting multiple copies of the same movie. They have to get both Deadpool and Wolverine covers of the steelbook…why?!!! It’s the same movie!!
@ movies with Sue drives me nuts with her idiocy…now she’s on a buying freeze yet still gets tons of free product from the studios and her subscribers…what a hero
This is the same reason why I'm so hesitant to collect tbh. I would love to have a great big collection but I think about some of the same reasons that's you mentioned and I hold myself back but it's also frustrating cause streaming services don't give me that nostalgic feeling. So yeah... I can relate to this 100%
I pretty much have everything I want and neeed at this point, all the favorites. I'll still buy the odd title I don't have and want but I don't need so-called 'upgrades' to certain formats, I'm content with DVD and Blu-ray. It's all about enjoying the movie and the experience of the favorite movie itself, the format is not important to me.
I didnt pick up Trick or Treat because I thought the price was ridiculous. Same with new $50 steelbooks. Then you have all the youtubers getting stuff for free then hyping the product. Consume, consume, consume! It feels like John Carpenters They Live now days.
I collected physical media movies from 2001 to 2020. I buy digital movies on Fandango At Home Vudu now over physical movies. For the most part i bought movies and tv shows i love. I still have my physical media to watch when i need it. Over the years I've sold things in my collection. I say if you enjoy collecting and buy what you enjoy then why not.
I mean I think that you’ll always want to keep movies you really love or anything that you collect. Downsizing collections will happen at some point but to say there’ll come a point where you don’t want any of it goes against what makes people usually start collecting which is being able to own something that can become scarce if streaming goes down or streaming simply does not have the movie you want to watch
I'm feeling this especially lately. There's so many releases, all tempting me to spend more. I buy very few "Big box of cr@p" editions - only 2 so far, but it all adds up. Those Black Friday deals have a sting in the tail - I picked up titles that I'd been putting off, but at £11 each, I couldn't resist. But if I wasn't prepared to buy them at full price (or a bit less), did I really want them ? I need to work on this.
I agree 1000% lately I've been downsizing my collection not getting anywhere near what I paid for them but it's also freeing to not have to deal with them anymore and now I only get stuff I really enjoy
If I'm honest, my collection has grown at an enormous speed over the years. But since 2024 I've kept the brakes on a bit. I buy things new and no longer leave the second-hand store with bags full of DVDs. I also try to improve my collection. to keep it more diverse (not just films) I now also buy Star Wars figures and Harry Potter things and the occasional Funko pop I have two cupboards where my collection is kept I have enough room to let it grow but if I ever get to the point come that the space has run out, I stop, I put the brakes on and that gives peace and breathing space. I once thought I would stop completely, but that is too extremely nice that you are making this RUclips video. I think many people are struggling with this I wish you a Merry Christmas
Excellent video. The question any collector (of anything) must ask him or herself is: Am I doing this because it brings me joy or because I'm psychologically addicted? It can be difficult to tell where the joy stops and the addiction begins, but as a recovering collector myself, I'm convinced the one leads to the other. You're not buying anymore because it gives you joy, but because you can't stop. The feel-good endorphins your brain released in your early collecting phase have been depleted through years of buying, and now you're basically acting out of habit. As any collector knows, it is difficult to stop once you're trapped in a repetitive loop of buying. What I have found to be equally satisfying, however, is keeping only the items I truly enjoy and donating the rest. I've culled my CD collection more than once and it was much easier than I had anticipated. I found out how easily and happily I could live without the things I once considered prized possessions.
I stopped buying "Physical" a couple of years ago... I don't have the money or the space anymore, and that's one of the reasons I like your videos: you're able to do something I can't do. 😆
This video needed to be made! As a media collector for 40 years, I’ve greatly toned it down and started to appreciate the stuff I already have, instead of looking for the next thing to purchase. I also have stuff in totes that I revisit and ask why. It’s amazing how quickly things become dust collectors. Happy Hollidays!!
Yeah, I just recently hit my breaking point. So this is a timely video for me. I amassed thousands of titles over a few years. Mostly on the cheap, but it adds up. I think I realized what my issue was and faced it. I'll still keep it, but the days of having to collect are done, there's only so much time and so much space. Great video, thanks for putting it out there.
yah Ive been collecting physical media(DVDs blu rays ) since 2000. and yah prices have really gone thru the roof on the boutique titles but again depends, I buy only either on sales or if a title is on my buy on sight list. This year 2024, bought lots of titles from boutique labels with the most money Ive spent being Severin films, buying their expensive All Haunts be ours 1 & 2 sets, the black emmanuelle set and the Spanish and Italian horror set....not really close but a lot in terms of numbers is Vinegar Syndrome, on their special sales days. Also Kino Lorber is another one . However surprising is Imprint Australia which I bought a good number of their titles in their back stock during sales. 2024 also brought in a new brand called Deaf Crocodile buying two of their titles this year.
I had to stop many years ago as you know. I have kids and wife, and they need my support. I just had to quit, I had it like you, "I don't need it, but I'll buy it anyway" I still love movies and the physical media, but I have so many streaming services and I'm not a fan of it, but it is what it is. I still have all my favorit movies here at home, and Im happy for them. But then I'm also happy that I don't spend all my money on blu-rays anymore. You know that I have been following you in like forever, you are one of my favorit youtuber, you have let the world into your familiy for so many years, so I feel that I know you all... Much love from Brian aka ClasenMovies
I love looking at what i have and try to display it and i live in a little studio and that’s a wrap for now. Once it starts becoming warehoused with no endgame in sight in regards to selling it down the line then it just becomes hoarding.
I keep most of my DVDs in CDs wallets, and throw out the cases (but I keep the covers, which has artwork & synopses, etc. that I’d prefer to keep). Saves a lot of space.
You is right on point on consumer buying multiple copies of movie. It's starting with best buy, target and Walmart with different slipcover or steelbook and lenticular covers. RUclipsrs are lucky getting free movie than consumer buying in retailers. Once best buy got out the game, I quit buying movies. I just wait till it's available on streaming services. Only thing I hate is the ad's while watching it.
I try to limit my buys to movies I want to watch more than once or are historically important. Space is the biggest problem. I'm almost out of room and not sure what to do.
We are spending $70 but imagine the problem the people buying on ebay have. If they preordered the movie they would save half their money. It's unbelievable with what we spend that people on ebay are paying so much more due to FOMO.
You’re hella funny! With that being said as a fellow collector (I’m a baseball card guy myself) your spot on with your points on the fundamentals of collecting management.
Time change, people change perspective change as well life is unfair get used to it, nowadays nobody buys physical media now everybody use streaming so get over it, what you have to do is sell all those DVDs that way you'll make a lot of money
The boutique labels are killing the game with the way too overpriced special edition b movies unfortunately some collectors helping them by buying them they sale out pretty quick and labels don’t even bother putting out standard editions most of the time anymore
I agree. They are making amazing editions for some of the worst movies. Shout Factory is releasing Sharon Stone’s Sliver which is absolutely horrible. And there are much worse examples than that. They are putting fresh paint on turds 💩
I finally came to the conclusion that I’m not going to watch the 600 Blu Rays I have so when 4k was introduced, I’ve bought maybe 20 and those are movies that I absolutely love. 99% of my movies are in boxes in storage room. Sure, streaming services don’t offer the same quality as 4k but it’s very easy to just plop down on the couch and find something quick to watch. Especially on Amazon Prime as they have tons of great 80s and 90s movies. I watch maybe 3 movies a week and new releases eventually come to streaming services. Then I told myself, why would I pay $40+ for a movie I might watch once a year. I also have 1000+ video games plus many statues and other memorabilia, so space for movies is very limited now. On a side note, I would love to have that House Party poster in the background. Is it signed by Kid and Play?
This was me at one point with clothes and video games. I’d buy stuff just because it was on “sale” and wouldn’t wear most of it or games would just sit there and collect dust. I sold, gave away and donated 90 percent of those clothes and sold half my gaming collection. Kept the games that games mean the most to me or I’m currently playing. I still have a lot of games but nowhere near what I had before. I now just take up less than half of a standard closet instead of the whole thing plus totes. A lot of stress has come off my shoulders for sure 😊 keep up the the fight to living a simpler life 💪
I would find a big place and make one big room your media room and that's where all your media would be at. That's what I did when i was in a mobile home about 10 years ago for 10 months.
Yeah I try to sell my unwanted films to make way for other films I end up buying, that way my collection never gets too overloaded. But tbh I should consider selling a bit more.
I know it sounds controversial, but collecting is a form of mental illness. When people try to compensate for something they're lacking in their lives. And it's not just the desire to be liked or accepted. It's deeper than that.
Yeah every Con now even the extras in the film are asking for $80 for a sig and pics lmao it’s f’n ridiculous now. People with five lines and under in a film are asking for $100 combos WTF who could afford this shit nowadays. Oh I simply just buy the regular dvd that’s all you need is the film and original cover release 🤔🤷♂️💯 To me that’s even cooler💯
This is very insightful and honest, collecting can spiral from fun to a burden. Perhaps a series of you cutting down some of those boxes and selling them would be interesting? And make space in your home. I hope you have a Christmas man!
I appreciate your candor with this video. When we die none our family’s will want to be burdened with this shit. I moved on from collecting mass produced plastic.
I think prices are going up because most people dont want physical stuff. Most of my friends never even bought a bluray player. Streaming is good enough. So its pretty hardcore collectors kind of laserdisc.back in the day. Also companies have to pay to license the films and then restore them, shoot special features, pay for box art and disc duplication. My advice is be selective and watching less youtube content has helped me reduce purchases also lack of space and having kids.
There is no problem buying physical media. Just as long you dont everything under the sun just to have a massive movie collection & just to make ytube videos. Only buy what you want to own and not buy a movie just bc it has a cool cover or a cool slipcover. Bc by doing that then you become a movie hoarder & your collection becomes a clutter & you will have wasted money & shelves space on movies that will just sit there and collect dust and take up space
you answered youre own question there expensive because you and other collectors are willing to pay rip off prices therefore boutiqe labels are gonna take advantage
@@lolizorzdon’t think it’s the item itself but the memory of finding it or buying it. at least for me and that alone makes letting go of some things harder
Most new movies suck so thats cut my collecting down.i like bmovies so its cheaper for me.i think your dvds might go up in value in 10 years after they quit making them.
A lot of people on RUclips see it as their job. Take Midlevelmedia for example, he admitted to it in a recent video. A lot of these physical media RUclipsrs buy these expensive sets for clicks and views, they need to make their money. That’s the problem. We need more people like you to make these types of videos. Spread the word.
I stopped collecting along time ago because I realized it was a waste of money and that I would never watch half the movies more than once. It was fun going every Tuesday to see what was out, but other than that I don't miss it.
Life is a journey you have fun collecting. No regrets ! I would start looking into how much some of that signed stuff is worth and get it appraised or maybe insured too.
I've seen you get a lot of enjoyment from collecting...it is what it is ..don't be so hard on yourself ...get rid of what you don't won't and buy what you want...life is short
Some of the prices are insane - like your Trick or treat movie 😁 But looks awesome though =). But when people keep paying for it, they won't lower them. I just buy black friday deals ect.
Great video on the state of collecting as a whole. It's definitely a slippery slope. We don't need everything, that much is for sure. I have so many movies and games that are in boxes and not even on a shelf scattered all inside of the house. I think we all need to cull our collections to some extent. It is a fine line between collecting and hoarding and I think sometimes people get carried away with it. I am definitely buying less and less but the bug still hits me sometimes. I think the best way to do it is have a single room or shelf and keep everything in there. If it's in the garage, you may as well give it away or sell it because you will never see it again. It is okay to sell everything and start over, too. The hunt is one of the most fun parts about collecting as it is.
Brendan, I see you struggling man. You have a moderate hoarding problem. You have to let the stuff go. Bring those bins and bags from your living room and dump them at Goodwill. You aren’t going to get rich from it all. Focus on collecting things that you can use for decorating but nothing that will take up extra space. You will feel so much better.
@@mrdacii Unless he has some really hot titles that he knows are gold. Otherwise it would take forever to list everything. Sometimes you just need to let stuff go. i used to hoard toys and it feels so good to get rid of everything. The men who have their houses covered in action figures are prisoners.
I used to buy Dvds and Blu Ray every week. Had 8 - 9 large bins that became a burden that I rarely opened and had to choose between space for living or a stack of movies that never got watched a 2nd time. I have since put all the discs into dvd binders and have only one bin of my best dvds and another for my best Blu Rays that are rare or signed etc. Now I only buy digital and will rarely pick up Blu Rays unless I know I intend to watch it often. Good video Sir 👍👍
I been watching dvd update for what seems like forever. Once I had a kid I stopped all together and when we moved across country I sold off my collection of like 5000 discs bc I didn’t wanna move em 😂 I haven’t bought anything physically for atleast 8 years but went to good will earlier this year and found a brand new vcr/dvd combo along with the old tmnt cartoon and goosebump tapes from when I was a kid. Now 9 months later I have about 150 titles between vhs, dvd, blu ray and 4k. I only shop sales from the boutique titles and get titles I know I loved and miss owning. I also only use funds I get from buy/selling with things i find at goodwill/yard sales etc. I will say the fomo in this community is real from these studios. I see people buying up these releases bc they don’t wanna miss out. My take may be frowned upon but in 2024 we have any movie we could possibly want at our fingertips if I need to see it. Did I want The Keep or the trick or treat release hell yeah but not at the price tags they asked for unfortunately. Sadly tho many don’t have that self control and will just keep buying and buying
As much as i wanted trick or treat i cant justify pay 70 for it i wait till it just get a bluray release it gets pricey on movies and money is a option to spend on it self space to im only getting stuff i watch more then once wont buy something that sits there
Wetwipes, you speak a lot of sense. I used to collect DVDs years ago, but I stopped because I couldn't afford it. Now I just download or stream for free.
I agree. I've been buying DVDs since 1999 and felt I needed to get everything. In the last ten years or so, I just buy what I love. Buying shit just so it can still on a shelf and collect dust isn't my style anymore.
Im still here buying $5 DVDs😂

So its pretty hardcore collectors kind of laserdisc.back in the day. Also companies have to pay to license the films and then restore them, shoot special features, pay for box art and disc duplication.
My advice is be selective and watching less youtube content has helped me reduce purchases also lack of space and having kids.
I was like that with hot wheels, then one day I felt the more mature thing to do would be to get rid of them
At this point in your life I think it's time to just enjoy your collection watch your movies and be satisfied
That's why I think you've done well sticking with what companies are giving you and focusing on autographed movie items.
I dont do digital period
you answered youre own question there expensive because you and other collectors are willing to pay rip off prices therefore boutiqe labels are gonna take advantage
Last year I bought least discs in like a decade.
For me, downsizing the collection I had just three years ago was tough for me emotionally.
Makes you wonder if it's ok to be so emotionally attached to some objects..
Funny, but true. I'm getting there too.
If you dump your movies bro I will gladly take em!!!!!!
I stopped collecting along time ago because I realized it was a waste of money and that I would never watch half the movies more than once. It was fun going every Tuesday to see what was out, but other than that I don't miss it.
Ive started to buy only what I want and not because I need it to make my collectiom bigger. My life is the better for it.
me i have to have every single title of movies because I watched them more often than other people would
Life is a journey you have fun collecting.
People need to remember that vhs tapes used to be $80 to buy in the 80s
Good advice Brendan!
I'm glad i don't have this problem of wasting money on useless clutter and i'm happy with what i have👍👍😊😊
HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS was acclaimed. Everyone I know that saw it loved it. You should watch it, you'll laugh a lot.
Nahh ebay is the way to go. Even if they’re not that valuable he’s still looking at a few thousand
Actually I've noticed that Hundreds of Beavers is on a lot of critics top ten of the year lists. I just watched the trailer and now want to watch it.😁
accidently brought 4 copies of the 1995 the witches as i ordered that on my phone by mistake easy done Brandon
I been watching dvd update for what seems like forever. Once I had a kid I stopped all together and when we moved across country I sold off my collection of like 5000 discs bc I didn’t wanna move em 😂
I haven’t bought anything physically for atleast 8 years but went to good will earlier this year and found a brand new vcr/dvd combo along with the old tmnt cartoon and goosebump tapes from when I was a kid.
The 100s of beavers joke was gold lol
Less is more 👍
I'm happy just with VHS 📼 and DVD 📀
🤟🤟🤟
As much as i wanted trick or treat i cant justify pay 70 for it i wait till it just get a bluray release it gets pricey on movies and money is a option to spend on it self space to im only getting stuff i watch more then once wont buy something that sits there
Wetwipes, you speak a lot of sense. I used to collect DVDs years ago, but I stopped because I couldn't afford it. Now I just download or stream for free.
He's a collector
You don't even need the movie, just watch it and move on.
