- Harry Belafonte - Drei Lieder (Three Songs), DEFA documentary, 1983. This documentary features backstage footage, interviews with Harry Belafonte and three songs performed at the Palace of the Republic as part of the Free German Youth music tour. The film was commissioned by the GDR Ministry of Culture and directed by Jürgen Böttcher. Setlist: Martin Luther King, Come Away Melinda (with Dianne Reeves), Peace on Earth (with Dianne Reeves).

Oh my Lord what an incredible film about peace and truth! Harry Belafonte was a fantastic man, fighting for justice and his songs were sung from an honest, loving heart.He should have received the Nobel’s Peace prize, that is for sure! Let us continue the seeds that Mr Belafonte has sawn! Peace! ❤️
Such an amazing artist. I’ve been lucky to see him several times in concert. He was my mom’s favourite singer, and he’s become one of mine too. Happy belated birthday Harry!
This man is so amazing for humanitarianism and music. I'm lucky to have seen him ten or more times in concert.
My mom adored Harry Belafonte. She finally got to see him not long before she died.
...gosh i feel so heartbroken he is no longer on this earth.💔 Knowing he was still here, with his enlightnened spirit and presence was one of those things that gives hope and light in this growing darker human world. I know he will be living forever in everything he did and accomplished with his humanitarian work, and with his mesmerizing music, but still i feel as loosing a dearest one❤

That's not his wife. That's the well known Jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves, who toured with Belafonte from 1983-1985.

O sorry, I misunderstood. His ex-wife Julie is Jewish and at the time was considered white even though she always had a somewhat darker complexion than the average caucasian.

The politician, by the way, is Egon Krenz. He was the last leader of the then
DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik) before the wall fell. Gosh, he almost ate HB alive with delight when the latter came down the stairs of the plane.
In any case, Harry Belafonte was a great performer, a great human being, and, last but not least, an absolute heartthrob. Many girls and women had a crush on
him. I did not know that he made a state visit to the GDR in its dying days

I was on seconday school those times, and I rembered people found it highly controversy, if not reprehensible that world famous American artist performed on so called ‘hostile territory’ behind the Iron Curtain.
Dear Harry, thanks for setting this example what one can do in times of increasing conflicts between nations, population groups and their leaders.
