Howdy, I just discovered you and watched a few of your videos. I am a 71 year old wood worker who now has chronic, dust induced asthma for the rest of my life (which will probably be shorter than it might have been). I noticed that you never wear a respirator of any kind. Neither did I for about 30 years. It's not as convenient, but I now wear a full face 3M mask in the shop because I got tired of interrupting conversations with friends due to a coughing fit. I want to have a relationship with my adult children for a long time, and I want to continue to give them beautiful gifts from my shop. So, I wear a mask. It's not so bad now that I'm used to it. Highly recommended! Love your stuff. Nice bench!

My Dad smoked most of his life and went through three wars. But, he died at 65 of lung cancer, caused by working with exotic hardwoods without a mask. I am now 77, never smoked and have been careful about dust control and masks.

Have you thought about generators. Possibly a solar system to generate some extra power that might run some air conditioning. Or big ass fans. My shop is devoid of air and I’m looking at cheap options. It has no windows. First I believe attic ventilation which will cool it down tremendously.

nice to see someone using hand tool to build and not all power tools. we as woodworkers depend on technology in todays world. we need to not lose the art of hand crafted woodworking so we can pass it down to the next generation

Sometimes you need a reset and a challenge in any hobby.
Even better if you can make it something that you will actually use and not just something for challenge or learning/trying new technique sake.
    Turned out awesome!!!
And super happy you found an outlet and way to keep from having the algorithm burn you out!

@@burnstockwoodworking i do agree with you whole heartedly. You get sucked into the whole algorithm of RUclips and sometimes you feel like you are making content just to appease them. That's one of the big reasons I stopped with my RUclips. Channel. Sometimes you gotta just say fuck it and do something for you and your own mental health. I have learned loads from your channel and I wish I could repay you for your knowledge. Love you brother God bless you and the family.

I like the styling approach that you used in this video. In the video it is clearly evident that you were enjoying the process of the build, rather than planning out the next comedy routine to keep your viewers entertained. Good idea to cut down the larger dimensional boards from the big box store that are supplied in hard southern yellow pine, rather than 2x4s that are a mix of spruce, pine, and fir (Douglas fir is another excellent wood to use, but seems to be less common than southern yellow pine). 15+ years ago I would occasionally make special trips to the big box stores, trying to see if any knot free southern yellow pine boards were close to the top of any of the stacks, and would then buy just those boards - I still have a few of those boards in my lumber rack (and some of those boards still have a lot of internal stress that is released when cutting at the table saw). Those construction grade boards tend to have a high moisture content, and might warp a bit as they dry, so you might have an opportunity to use your large hand plane in the future to re-flatten the top of your bench. Nice job on the bench, and good score on the hand tool collection.

I don’t build any of the things you seem to most often build. The closest our two world’s have come in that regard is in this installment. I’m one of those 95% hand-tool only guys that give themselves a bad rap by acting like there’s some single way ‘to-do’ woodworking 😂. I can’t apologize for them, because I ain’t them. I started because I can do it without being supervised; I sustained a TBI in 2013 which ended my 23+ career as Marine Corps Officer, and seizures, spatial issues, and tremor are still very present parts of my life. A handtool only shop means that my wife can check in on me via the cameras in my shop and I can call for help anytime I need via those or intercom; yet I don’t have to be watched. I woodwork the way I do because I can. I woodwork the way I do because it gives my mind and body a vocational purpose. I do woodwork the way I do because it brings me joy and has probably saved my life. I do woodwork the way I do because I build only for myself and my family; that brings me joy, purpose, satisfaction, and sustains me on the days I need an extra push… So I may not build what you build, but aim glad to see you build a bench 👍.
You do you brother! Whatever your mode and whatever your project, you’re doing it right if you’re doing so as safely as you can and with as pure intent as you can to provide for not just your family, but how in doing so, that it’s what provides for you! Don’t let anyone rain on your why and how.

Do you not understand what a traditional English joiner's bench (AKA a Nicholson bench) is? It uses planks for its strength, NOT a massively thick laminated top. I'm sure your bench is great, and suits you well, but for people wanting to build a Nicholson bench your headline is misleading click-bait.
