This is the best performance by far I have ever seen by any Mummer String Band! They were robbed!!!! But hey, the proof is in the pudding... here it is my friends. Music, costumes, choreography, and the props were amazing.
The tomahawk chop and chant was actually originated from Florida State University, the Florida Seminoles whom are named after the Florida Seminole Tribe. The same gesture and chant was later adopted by the Atlanta Braves. They have been doing the chant for years. In one article I have read, the NCAA tried to ban the use of the word seminole in championship games and the famous tomahawk chant and chop. The Florida Seminole Tribe came in and blasted NCAA they overturned their ruling.
LOVE the high definition quality! Clearer than any mum video I've seen. I noticed it right away watching Fralinger. Do you have other years with this clarity?
I'm just learning about Mummers and these people who complain really don't know the history. I have been to a few pow wows and I think these people did a fantastic job with the costumes. Every culture takes a bit of grief, I'm Irish. Native Americans can corner the market on political correctness.
what a beautiful show all around :) this looks like it's an elaborate version of one of those native american stores you see in malls that sell sacred symbols and authentic head dresses. you can even get one of those symbols on a t-shirt for only 20 dollars. it is kinda greedy for a non-profit organization to put on a show that looks so similar to one of those stores.
You all say how disrespectful this is to your faith and what you believe. They did this show because they can have elaborate costumes and music. And some of the comments said I would like to see you guys do a catholic theme and see how you guys react. Go watch Avalon String Band 1990 and watch the NYD performance. Nobody complained about that theme. Plus that show was meant to be funny.
As I understand it, wearing war paint and doing the "tomahawk chop" can be considered offensive to Native Americans. I think the judges knocked off points unfairly for it, even though Quaker City's music and performance were the strongest in my opinion.
And someone tell me the difference between the White Buffalo and the Dragon used in Chinese New Year parades? The dragon is also revered. Some people are just too damn serious and negative.I still think this group did a great job!! And if one group dressed in tshirts and cargo shorts waving an instrument shaped like a cross, I would watch that too if they were any good. Fundamental Christians also take themselves too damn seriously who wants to be around all that negativity?
i would say generally its the person behind/underneath/on top of it, generally it isnt joe cracker underneath the dragon thing.... while i can appreciate the visual they were going for it is essentially spitting on something that means something to a lot of people... if i took a flag, placed it on the ground, pissed and shat on it, lit it on fire and waved it around i wouldnt need to be told what i was doing is offensive but apparently this band of merry idiots needs to be told?
Incredibly disrespectful. There is no 'honor' to us or our ancestors in this display, making a mockery of what we hold sacred. Why don't you make fun of your own people and dance around dressed up like Jesus and playing instruments shaped like crosses?? I dare you.
wow. what a performace. and the costumes were wonderful.
Aloha from Hawaii..Loved all your parade videos..These guys are FANTASTIC..!!!!!
This is the best performance by far I have ever seen by any Mummer String Band! They were robbed!!!! But hey, the proof is in the pudding... here it is my friends. Music, costumes, choreography, and the props were amazing.

Cheers to Billy Rhoda and the "Bass Sax Section."
Just found this and cracked up. Wrong stringband Ramon!!!
Thought it was a beautiful tribute. Costumes were gorgeous, music excellent. Quaker City always a top notch entry!
all the regalia's and traditional wear are sacred and not to be miss used.

I agree, a first place performance but I can't take anything away from Fralinger.. they were incredibly dynamic.

I just did more homework on this subject, you know where the tomahawk chop and chant originated? I never knew this until now

No points where knock off for political correctness!

Best performance this year without knocking off any points for political correctness?
mummersparade, care to elaborate on the political correctness comment?
