I recommend freeze drying pumpkin purée! I just did some and it’s fantastic. Adding a little to pancakes, oatmeal or rehydrate for pumpkin bread or muffins! 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you so very much for doing this video!! Hardly anyone ever shows us how to use our dried foods. Or the food that we worked so hard to put up. Please will you do more videos like this?!? Again, thank you!!!
I was just gifted a freeze dryer from my Auntie for Christmas as I would never be able to afford one! I'm so excited it should be here in February which is my birthday month! So a 2-in-1 gift 🎁🎄
When I'm out flying 👩🏾✈️ - I travel with my dehydrated and freeze dried foods along with my mini dash rice cooker. This saves me a ton of 💰🤑💸 AND it helps me to stay HEALTHY while away from 🏡. Great Video! 👍🏽
Sara, I just wanted to tell you how beautiful you looked in that dark yellow t-shirt at the beginning of the video. Your complexion was absolutely glowing! So lovely inside and out❣️
Good videos! Good to see such a wonderful couple sharing clean and wholesome teachings on working with your garden and taking it in your home. God is blessing my family with your videos. Just pouring with the Holy Spirit in your simple messages. My wife wants to take freeze dried foods, fruits and veggies that we grow to our garden to the homeless shelter for snack time with the children’s program. Looks like God will be providing us with a freeze dryer so we can start our ministry. Your family has inspired us.
I grew up like this. Very good healthy way of living. Lots of people don’t like smell around the farm but I don’t mind. My wife doesn’t like it and we live in the city, unfortunately . Good job guys i love everything you guys do. Big HI from BOSNIA 🇧🇦
I just made that pot pie for the first time and it is delicious. I wish you would come out with a cookbook . I watch you guys all the time so I trust your recipes. Going to a store picking out a cookbook you just don't know if it's going to be good or not. If you ever do I'll buy it!!💕
I think one of my favorite things about watching you two is the intense excitement over things I often feel I get excited about but others think are lame or ordinary. Growing things, preserving the harvest, farm animals. You're my people.
Your informative and honest guide to freeze drying food has inspired me to invest in a freeze dryer for my family. I have a feeling that it will pay for itself in the long run considering the state of world conditions. Great job you guys. Turkey pot pie with drop biscuits looks great. Thanks again for sharing your journey 🤩
I had to laugh when you said you would have parsley for the rest of your life! I got a pound of parsley about 27 years ago and still have a quart jar full! Lol. I live watching your channel! So much information and real life experience. Thank you and God bless you both 🙏😊
Great video we also get the mixed veg from Costco and freeze dry them then when we do the cup of soup we add a hand full to it and make the noodle soup that much better.
Mine came last week! I am slowly clearing out my freezer. I did two loads of shredded cheese! I was given so much fresh mozzarella so I shredded it and freeze dried it. I then found quite a few bags of cheddar in my freezer and threw them in with some shredded Velveeta. I powdered the Velveeta! I am doing some candy runs for the kids right now, but I'll continue with clearing out the freezer tomorrow.😁 I'm absolutely LOVING it and the fact that I can see what is in my freezer now. Haha!
Thanks to you guys, my sister and several other YT FDers, I bought a Large about 3 months ago and have had is running non-stop. Bought 10 extra trays, {15 total}, and have had every tray prepped with food and pre-freezing continuously. Have been vac sealing most my food in 1/2 Gallon jars, and some in Mylar, but so far I have 164 jars full, with dozens more quarts and pints. Its so nice to kick back and feel at ease knowing I have years and years of food stored for whatever becomes of these crazy times we live in...{in just 3 months, and not slowing down yet} Every 2 weeks I go shop for sales and am trying new stuff to FD and store for later. Lately I've been making meals like Chili, Hamburger Stew, Biscuits and Gravy, Pasta and Meatballs and storing those in Mylar for the long long term. Thanks again.
Terrific "one pot" meal! Thanks for the reminder about this amazing recipe and of course we love learning more about the Freeze Dryer! I am just simply having a nostalgic moment remembering Grandma's many one pot meals... Pot Pie being one of them! Wish I could keep her here forever as she was like a walking Recipe book... This recipe also reminded me that some of the best recipes are simple enough to remember all the ingredients without at book! THANK YOU!!!!
Mine is coming in January. I bought one during the recent sale, so with the money saved from the cost, I purchased additional tools. Preserving food is my biggest reason. Decreasing the risk of losing food from freezer failure is the second. Having longer storage for food is the next. It will also make for easy meals if someone in the home is sick, injured, or even as we get older and may not able to do as much or afford to buy. We can buy $5 beef now, when in 5 years it may cost $10 for the same beef. It also makes it much more portable and use less storage space. I am very excited and blessed to have been able to purchase one. I hope it lasts my family a very long time.
Wonderful! My favorite items I've freeze-dried and use daily are mirepoix (onions, celery, & carrots) and diced peppers. No need to rehydrate, just throw them into whatever you are cooking. Garlic and onion powder have also been terrific. Thank you for the great videos.
It’s so true it’s a very good investment it’s worth it buying a freeze dryer I order mine and I’m gonna get it in January 8 I’m so excited thanks to you guys you encourage me buying a freeze dryer I’m so happy
I really enjoy what you guy's are doing. I recently bought a freeze dryer and after doing the Felix Fix, I'm finally able to use it. I'm 4 batches in now and I really enjoy watching everything you do. Please keep it up!
Yummmy this dinner looks amazing….one of my families favorites…thank you for sharing…each time I make your no knead bread there is never enough! Soooo good
Our local Wal-Mart's had pallets of canning jars and several cases of lids this week. Hopefully that shortage is resolving itself. I have asked Santa for a freeze dryer. Crossing my fingers. 😊
What was the cost per case. I have found them locally too but a case of half-gallon jars were $16, the same as a case of quart jars. So they still seem high to me.
Uh oh, you must not have seen the video about why they decided to homestead. Sarah was a top dog in whatever she was doing so Kevin usually cooked for the girls. She cooked dinner one night and the girls told Kevin what a great job he did on dinner and she was like no, I cooked. I can cook too girls. You could hear the hurt in her voice as she said it.
It is great seeing y'all I watch every week I'm glad that y'all doing well and taking care of yourself Merry Christmas to you and your girls and all the extended family and I love seeing all that I wish I could afford stuff like that but I can't but I love seeing you all being so healthy and being able to do that for your family and makes me so happy just to see that thank you for teaching me about nutrition I'm 65 I'm in clintonville Wisconsin I'm here on my own now my kids are grown and I just enjoy your family so much thank you for sharing Merry Christmas and a beautiful new year in Jesus amen shalom 🎄🎀👌🌹
I’m 30 years old and my husband and I are starting our “homestead” this year. The lifestyle seems amazing for our young kids and it’s honest work. Watching you cook with the things you’ve grown and harvested your self, and you look so happy, it’s really my goal. Thank you for the content! We are from Missouri too!
The cool part is that apart from the lard and biscuits, I think practically everything else can be freeze dried and you could make a semi-MRE package of Pot Pie. Not sure how it would turn out if you freeze-dried the finished meal, but that would be an interesting follow-up to see (especially to find out how the biscuits come back from freeze drying).
I have one and am doing lil meals kinda like that. all you'ld need to do is heat water and put in. Theres several things freez dryers dont like ie oils sugars and such.
I know Jill at North Texas Vegetable Gardening has done that. She has several videos up on meals she has prepared and freeze dried to have ready in mylar bags, just in case. She even taste tested some things.
I recently did biscuits for Sausage and gravy. Cut them into 6ths, and just toss them in with the water while rehydrating the gravy and they come back quite well, soft on outside, and still a little fry and crunchy on inside. Tastes great and not all mushy!
After watching your videos on freeze drying about 50 times, I purchased the large FD unit and the premiere pump! I am stoked about the product that is produced and found this one to be particularly useful oh re-hydrating the food. Chicken pot pie is on the menu for dinner tomorrow night with my store bought frozen/freeze dried mixed veggies and home canned chicken!
Homesteaders, there are a lot of channels to watch. I only find myself here watching you two. I so enjoy your informative and charming videos. I love Kevins shirt! Keep up the good work!
I make meals in a jar. I freeze dry chicken and frozen veggies. I then add a package of Knor soup and veg and chicken with some additional spices that we like. You then just have to stir the contents into 4 cups of water and bring to a boil then simmer for 20 minute. We love our soup on busy nights!
Hi Sarah and Kevin. Our Harvest Right freeze dryer arrived last week. We are super excited to use it. Thank you for sharing yours with all of us. We received exceptional service from Harvest Right. We bought the medium size and went with the premium pump too. The recipe looks delicious…can’t wait to try it. God bless, and Merry Christmas.🎄✨❤️
From what I’ve been told is that each tray can hold 2.5 pounds for the medium freeze dryer actually anywhere from 7-10 lbs total,4 trays …we just today bought one for our household…yes the savings is incredible not to mention the health benefits and nutritional value we receive ….thanks for clarifying all the costs and comparisons most don’t know or think of…blessings wished for the new year…
I love that the clock on the oven is showing through the cooking process, it really was a quick meal mostly. It is also good to get ideas for what to use mixed veggies for, I always gravitate towards soups, but that gets old after a while.
Sara, I don’t have a freeze dryer, but loved this recipe. I made it tonight using fresh onion, celery, carrots, potatoes, canned green beans and canned corn. It was absolutely delicious, this recipe is a keeper!
We use a moisture meter to check the moisture content of our food prior to storing our freeze dried food. Surprisingly, after checking the moisture, we have placed numerous trays of food back into the freeze dryer and continued the drying process until they are completely dried. We no longer use our dehydrator, but still have it just in case. For long term storage we use mylar bags, but occasionally use vacuum sealed mason jars for shorter term storage. In my personal opinion, the freeze dryer was our best food storage purchase. We held off purchasing a freeze dryer until I watched your electric use video.
Wonderful video. More and more I am convinced I HAVE to find the money to invest in a freeze dryer! Thank you, Kevin and Sarah. I don't always comment but I watch every one of your videos.
Thank you for introducing us to the world of freeze drying! We have learned stechniques and tips fom watching your videos and love it! We have had ours for about a year and am very happy we bit the bullet and purchaed it. Again, thanks!
You can, I do it frequently. Been storing tons of individual foods in jars, just for that purpose so not every meal is the same and I can pick and choose what to put in it.
We had send the pump for our freeze dryer to get back from repair. We buy as much meat as we can. And I have been pressure canning that. Excited to get it back.
Not sure if you know but you can use your freeze dryer to vacuum seal canning jars. I have done that for years it reduces the O2 content to the point that oxygen absorbers are not required. Canning jars make it easy to find what you want on the shelf and are reusable. Another hack is to use a Pump and Seal to reseal jars that you are actively using.
It was great joining you in this video. The meal looks great. 😋 Yum! Sarah, your counters are always so clean and uncluttered. It's an ideal I'm still working on. God bless you both.
You can measure your lard in a measuring cup with water. Put 1 cup of water in a large measuring cup. Add your lard until the water moves up the amount you need.
My favorite fat when making any biscuits is bacon drippings ... a semi solid for my kitchen since it stays on the counter ... makes beautiful fluffy biscuits rolled or drop with amazing flavor.
Oh bacon fat is like gold here. I use it for many things. Sneak a bit into your apple pie crust. Oh my the salty smoky hint in the sweet pie is amazing 👏 😋 😍
I bought a pound of poultry seasoning from Tucson Cooperative about 19 years ago. I have given about 1/4 away over the years and I use it a lot. I am finally down to the last cup and a half.
I really liked learning how to cook with the freeze dried veggies. I’d love to have the FD but I’ve never made meals with freeze dried foods. This is an excellent new lesson.
Best description of the pros and cons of a freeze dryer versus the dehydrator that I have heard on any channel. There's still no way that I could afford one, but it might be a long-term goal because I am always having leftover vegetables because I'm only one person and I can only eat so much. I need a deep freezer more, but unless you have a garage or basement, that's impossible. So both are out of reach for me right now. For people who still want a dehydrator along with a freeze dryer, I would recommend getting a Sun Oven.
My question is have you ever considered packaging the items in Jars using a vacuum sealer like Rain Country makes? Seems like it would save on cost and waste.
The savings you make was about $48 for the whole batch. If you would have grown it yourself, it would have been $50. At 30 cycles before an oil change, that would be approximately $1,500 of savings or approximately half the cost of the machine. So it will take 2-3 oil changes to break even. Then it is just savings from there. Thanks for the info. I am drawn to the freeze-dryer for taste, nutritional retention, longevity of the food, storage space savings, freeing up freezer space while savings on the electricity to run the freezer. That is a lot of wins. I am saving for purchasing one and creating a space to have it. You make me more excited than ever for the day it arrives.
I like how much info you share. I don't can & don't care for the texture of dehydrated foods so investing in a freeze dryer is looking like a great option for me.
When my niece was married my husband and I gifted her my moms set of Pyrex bowls there was 4 in the set each size a different color. The yellow on being the biggest. She loved that she had something of her grandmother’s kitchen in her new home.
Thanks for sharing with us Sarah and Kevin, what a wonderful video this is. Totally a fantastic idea about using store bought frozen vegetables if you don’t have any garden space yet you want the fresh vegetable taste from your meals. Thanks so much for this video. Fred. 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻✋🏻✋🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Brilliant money saving ideas. Do you remember a few years back and Sarah had purchased all of the cranberries after Thanksgiving??? That was an epic buy also....💖
I did the same thing...frozen mixed veggies did so well in the FD. And now we can just add them to soups or a stew. I also did a lot of tomato sauce because of ya'll. Just being able to use as a paste or sauce is a game changer. That dinner looks so good!! Can't wait to try this recipe.
@@tanyad4577 I follow homesteading family and they freeze dried whole raw cows milk in one of their videos and apparently quite successfully. Not sure what type of freeze dryer it was.
@@tanyad4577 It is some that I bought. Sometimes it has alot floating on the top and I screen it off. This that I freeze dried did not. I worked great. Now I have not reconstituted yet, but it is flakey and very dry.
I actually made this a few weeks back using what I had in my pantry and freezer. I love buying the mixed veggies frozen; it's so convenient and useful for many recipes. Great idea on freeze drying the frozen veggies for long term storage. Your Chicken n Biscuit Pot Pie turned out beautiful Sarah. I can't wait to see what other recipes you come up with using your freeze dried foods.
Ooh, can’t wait till after Christmas and see if you find the deal again on cranberries Sarah! Because of that video, I have a case of cranberry concentrate on our shelves! Thanks and ❤️ y’all, Kristy (your neighbor) in West Plains 😃🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Praise the Lord for homegrown goodness. The meal had our mouths watering, guess we should have waited until after breakfast to watch the video. Enjoy your channel. God bless you both. Merry Christmas.
Thank you for sharing. Always enjoyable to learn new things. For just me and being much older, I really can't afford one. For a family and younger people, love the idea. I did use my new steam juicer and was able to make 9 half pints of blackberry syrup. Some of which I will be giving as gifts. I do have a pressure canner and steam canner I use quite often. I also have a dehydrator and a seal a meal bag item. All of which I use for food preservation. I want to thank you Sarah for showing your steam juicer when you first received it. I ordered one when I could afford it after seeing that video. It works fantastic. Thank you both for blessing us with your videos and knowledge. God bless and keep you and yours.
Thank you so much for this information! We used your link to buy our Harvest Right Freeze Dryer! We trust your information! I see that Kevin is using his math skills! Which is great for us! Love the recipe! GOD bless
Thank you very much for the pot pie recipe. I made it and it turned out great! I had never made drop biscuits before. That is sure a lot easier than rolling out dough. I can see me making these a lot.
I would like to see more of these types of meals made from freeze dried foods.
Me, tooooo!! This looks so yum!!!🌟👍💞
Yes! Freeze dried and dehydrated food recipes. The texture of the re-hydrated food can be tough.
Agreed
Meeeeee, tooooo!!!!
I agree
I recommend freeze drying pumpkin purée! I just did some and it’s fantastic. Adding a little to pancakes, oatmeal or rehydrate for pumpkin bread or muffins! 👍🏼👍🏼
Awesome idea!
So you powder it after?
Yes, I just crumble it with my hands.
Or for cat and dog supplements
That is an awesome idea. Thanks for sharing. Just put some on the freeze dryer. 😊
Thank you so very much for doing this video!! Hardly anyone ever shows us how to use our dried foods. Or the food that we worked so hard to put up. Please will you do more videos like this?!? Again, thank you!!!
I love all of your videos, but the freeze dryer ones really excite me...I'm saving for one now. ❤️You guys.
I think Harvest Right has a "lay-away" program.🙂

Wonderful video. More and more I am convinced I HAVE to find the money to invest in a freeze dryer! Thank you, Kevin and Sarah. I don't always comment but I watch every one of your videos.
Thank you for introducing us to the world of freeze drying! We have learned stechniques and tips fom watching your videos and love it! We have had ours for about a year and am very happy we bit the bullet and purchaed it. Again, thanks!
Could you make a complete meal from all freeze dried food? I think that would be very informative and enjoyable
Awesome video! Thanks for showing that I don't have to rehydrate the FD veggies before I put them into a dish. Can't wait to try this recipe.
@@Emeraldwitch30 O M G !!! You are giving away my pie secret! ;)
@@WinkTartanBelle oopsy! Everyone disregard that post! Lol
It's first thing in the morning here and now after watching this I'm hungry for dinner!
I bought a pound of poultry seasoning from Tucson Cooperative about 19 years ago. I have given about 1/4 away over the years and I use it a lot. I am finally down to the last cup and a half.
This video answered ALL of my questions about the benefits of freeze-drying. Thank you so much for a very informative review.
As a lover of pot pies, that made me want to go home and make one. Yours looks delicious! ❣️🙏🏼🎄♥️🎁
So interesting how that freeze dryer works. Your pot pie looks delicious!
Love every step of your videos! God Bless you Both!
I love your yellow bowl. I have my mom's which is just like it!!! Can't wait to try this recipe!!!
That was an epic buy also....💖
Great! Think my grandchildren would love that recipe!
Thanks for the recipe! Sounds delicious 👍🏻
I'm glad to find out I'm not the only one who eats frozen peas as a snack 🙃
You make this seem much more simple and much easier than the channel "SchoolReports" If it is this Simple, I'm interested in doing this my self.
It sounds amazing all bubbling there in that pan!
I freeze dried goat milk. I worked beautifully. Can’t wait to cook with it.
Did you do whole goats milk? My milk has so much butter fat I was worried it wouldn't work. How did/are you using it?
@@tanyad4577 I follow homesteading family and they freeze dried whole raw cows milk in one of their videos and apparently quite successfully. Not sure what type of freeze dryer it was.
@@tanyad4577 It is some that I bought. Sometimes it has alot floating on the top and I screen it off. This that I freeze dried did not. I worked great. Now I have not reconstituted yet, but it is flakey and very dry.
@@TMesser74 as far as I know, there is only one home freeze dryer. Harvest Right
Thank you for showing the freeze drying process.
Good ☕️☕️ Morning Kevin & Sarah,this video was awesome!Your meal looked delicious!Have a wonderful week ahead!👍😊👏
Thank you so much for your videos! I love all of your ideas
True on also figuring cost of growing it...water, seeds, soil. etc
😊😊 Thanks guys!
Thanks very much for one of the most educational and interesting videos I've ever seen on you tube. Love you both.
Praise the Lord for homegrown goodness. The meal had our mouths watering, guess we should have waited until after breakfast to watch the video. Enjoy your channel. God bless you both. Merry Christmas.
Your tee shirts are hilarious! 😂My husband wants them all!
Ha! I bought a pound of parsley from Azure in November! I've just been adding it to everything!
GOD bless
Good morning from Virginia. Love the channel!
Sarah’s feisty today! Love it! 😂
Thank you very much for the pot pie recipe. I made it and it turned out great! I had never made drop biscuits before. That is sure a lot easier than rolling out dough. I can see me making these a lot.
Thanks y’all, we watched several of your freeze dryer videos & convinced us to purchase a freeze dryer. Have made several batches & love it. Thanks
