***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.
We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.
We're elderly, so you can help us out. 👵🏼😊 Were usually forced to cook at least twice a week whether we feel like it or not. 😂 We also cook big batches which we eat 3-4 days in a row. Otherwise it's sandwiches. It's not the most exciting menu but it works for us since we were both raised to be thankful and not picky. Believe me, meals had much more variety when we were young!
I love all your videos and you are my favorite homesteaders. It's fun to watch your beautiful daughters grow up and your exciting, busy farm life. I wish we were 50 years younger but God has given us His best through 47 years of marriage. May He bless and protect you all! Much love from a Granny in Texas.
One thing to remember with your freeze dryer too is when you freeze dry things like strawberries, apples, peaches, etc., you can put them into your spice grinder and make a powder. Adding strawberry powder to a cake icing is incredible.
Thank you for explaining freeze drying and giving your review of the Harvest Right! I’m the Executive Chef of my region’s food bank, and I’ve been looking for ways to expand food storage, reduce waste, and provide meals for our unhoused population. This is my answer! (Side benefits are that my food pantries can keep meals on the shelf instead of taking up precious freezer space, and as most of the pantry volunteers are elderly, the reduced weight is an added bonus!). I am fortunate to have found a donor who has purchased FOUR of the large units for my kitchen! I cannot wait for them to arrive and to get started experimenting with recipes! I’ve always found your channel to be informative and a fun escape during my week, but this is going to be absolutely life changing for so many of my clients! Thank you!
As a non-elderly food pantry volunteer, I say YES! Anything we can do to increase nutrition, decrease weight, save space in our facilities, help clients save space in their homes, all the while offering great taste is fabulous! Many clients have limited kitchens, too. What’s easier than adding water? Even hotel rooms come with coffee (hot water) makers. If you’ve been successful, please let me know. Are the clients receptive to freeze-dried food?
Amazing
That sounds great! Please let us know how the freeze dryers are working for you. Thanks!
If the product is weighed before and after freeze drying, the difference in weight will be the amount of water needed to rehydrate. If you write that amount on the bag or on the label of the jar, getting back to where you started will be a little easier.
Dwight - Great tip.
Great thought!!!
I've kinda done the same thing with dehydrated potatoes. I used to use a lot of the sliced casserole box potatoes like cheesy bacon au'gratin or scalloped potatoes. By using their water amounts and the weight of the dried potatoes to put together my own "box kits" of potatoes it works rather well. I just make my own cheese sauces instead of the powdered ones. The liquid ratios still seem to work well, despite having different liquids. Only occasionally do I have to add a splash of milk or cook a tad longer due to too much liquid. I do think its because I use all types of potatoes in my mix and not just one.
I bet this will get Kevin to do a bit of "nerdy farm math" for us 🥰
Just what I was going to suggest ❤️
My immediate thought as well.
It's cooking, not rocket science, and a little either way isn't a big disaster, especially if it is still tasty!
Y'all are so well rehearsed and coordinated in your presentation in each video. As good as anything on television.
Yep. Whoever does the editing of the videos does an excellent job, so it seems seamless and well-rehearsed.
I agree
My Flight Attendant daughter and her boys all have food allergy issues so have a very customized diet. She bought a dryer and can take her "safe foods" on her trips. Sometimes they are 9-10 days long so previously it was very difficult to take enough food with her. Now the dryer has made things so easy for her. Light weight, flat and still tasty. Just some hot water from the galley and she's able to eat well. Highly recommend this method.
That's a great idea
And I would think you could get through customs since they are sealed. I’m a flight attendant too and that’s the other reason I’m looking at it.
@@texasirishangel1126 She hasn't had any issues in about 3 years she's been doing it even in a**hole places like DUL, SFO and ORD. It's been a Godsend for her with the inability to eat most fast foods or restaurant foods. As a F/A I'm sure you travel with some heavy bags so saving weight is a great thing. Good luck flying!
@@rogerhuber3133 good to know! Thanks! Yes, I travel with my roller bag, duffle, and food bag. Sometimes that food bag can start out heavier than my roller!
Woke up to 5 baby goats this morning 4 Billy’s and a nanny
Congratulations!
@@borountree4539 thank you
Oh how exciting... congratulations!!!
There really seems to be an abundance of boys on all the homesteads this year.
@@Keachybean it seems that way the people I bought the billy from had good luck every baby he was the dad to was girls lol
Grandkids are the best invention ever. 🥰
Yes!! Grand babies are the best!!
You got that right!!
Yes indeed! They are precious!
Using the freeze dryer to clear out old stuff from the freezer is big. We had frozen cherries in the freezer for a year. I didn't like them in smoothies, and nobody knew they were in the freezer. I freeze-dried them and now they sit in a clear container on the kitchen counter. Kids are eating them daily. They didn't completely dry out and are more like raisins. Very good.
Judy Jetson food that tastes great. Everybody wants a freeze dryer, now.
Judy Jetson. I remember her.
I’ve always wanted one!!!!
Not everyone...
This is such an amazing way to preserve food. I wish I would’ve known this about 50 years ago. Now that my kids are grown and my husband gone to heaven it’s just me. But I love watching your videos. They are uplifting. Thanks for all you do!
My kids are grown now too. I see less and less cooking in the future, and I miss it.
It would be awesome to have a freeze dryer at any age and situation I believe in these times! Fix a few large meals once and have many for later! Prayers for you! I've been widowed 15 yrs with raising my 17yr old son on my own with God's Blessings!
I don't think there were home freeze dryers 50 years ago. The microwave was the new thing in the early 70's, but they weren't in everyone's kitchen until the early 90's. I first heard about home freeze dryers about 7 years ago when going off-grid was all the rage. I'm an empty-nester & just ordered a Medium freeze dryer. I have Big Plans for it!! I already have days when I don't feel like cooking & end up eating peanut butter toast. NO MORE PB TOAST!! that's kid's food
Kevin’s compliments to the chef has Sarah absolutely glowing
I Love this channel ❤
Anxiously awaiting my HR freeze dryer to arrive. Starting a community “bartering” system for summer fruits and crops to support the kids backpack program and the local community center . Thank you for being a light to show the way for helping others as food insecurity continues to rise. Thank you!!!! God bless
My hubs and I used to day and overnight hike and back pack and spent a fortune on freeze dried meals this is a great way to help your community.
A funny note back in the 80s when we hiked a lot we actually looked into these very machines and the 4 tray one was over $6000 so our dreams of doing it ourselves kinda went out the window. The prices have actually gone down and we might be tempted.
@@Emeraldwitch30 Just like the first microwaves, that cost upwards of $2000. when they first came on the market. The more people that buy them help the cost come down.
@@gelwood99 Remember hand held calculators, back in the late 60's, when
minimum wage was about $1/hr, and the calculators were $150? and then by the late 70's, early 80's you got a free one in your box of Fruit Loops! 😲😲
MT - that is actually a very good idea. That might be a way of offsetting the cost of acquiring a freeze-dryer.
@@marktoldgardengnome4110 - It goes the other way also. I used to buy GIANT Baby Ruth candy bars for a dime. One that size would cost $10 today.
Can you imagine freeze drying watermelon or cantaloupe for crunchy snacks!
Ice cream!
That sounds great
Excellent suggestion👍
Watermelon turns out like candy. It's SOOOOOOO good to snack on!
What a fantastic idea about baby food. It would be so easy, convenient, and you KNOW where your baby's food came from and how it was raised and processed. No recalls for plastic, glass, or bacteria in it. Love this!
So, the wife was headed to the shower, and I just got back in from planting taters, onions sets, garlic, strawberries, potted up two elderberries and a few blackberry canes I rooted from last season - I threw the video up on the tv with screen share. You guy look great on the new tv, very crisp and clear... I watched this video twice so the wife can hear it... I’m going to play again after she goes to sleep so she will let me get a Harvest Right... 😄
I want to say Congratulations to all who won the prizes .
We have a large countertop freezedryer. I thought my wife was nuts when she bought one that size because it takes up so much room on the counter but boy does she feel that thing up when she decide she's going to freeze dry bunch of stuff. It was very expensive for us but it's been worth it.
I personally never heard of liar bags for home use and I don't think she did either because she didn't get none and she ran out of gallon jugs to put stuff into. So I want to tell her about the myler bags and make that investment...
Great video thanks for sharing be blessed in Jesus name... BBE 🤗🤗🤗🤗
I would love to see videos of Sarah making her prize winning recipes!
Our chickens would be very unhappy if we got a freeze dryer - they love leftovers!!!
Oh I hear that. My compost pile sure suffers due to the chickens getting the yum! Lol
Haha. Newbie chicken owner. They just started laying. Gosh love my birds and they do love any kind of leftovers and how my compost pile has suffered, lol.
Melody Lyons add their poop and bedding to the compost. Your pile will grow quickly 😸
I wish I could afford a freeze dryer. I'd be satisfied with your chilli recipe for now, Ha Ha. Looks AMAZING!!! Could almost smell it from here.
Bought a Harvest Right last summer. I put in sliced tomatoes from the garden. BLTs in January and February were just like summer.
THAT was my question!! Although there is something to be said for the heightened appreciation for things that you only get to enjoy in its season, I want tomato sandwiches more than 3 months a year!!
The freeze 🥶 dryer seems like a great purchase and would be a peepers dream 😴. 👍
I got my harvest right today. Love your videos . Thank you. Your both adorable. I'm going to clean out my freezer .
My friend has a freeze dryer. All I gotta say is BACON!!!!! It’s was so awesome!!!
My HR freeze dryer arrived this week. I did the bread yesterday and gong to start with the eggs today. So grateful to you both for the education and taking us on this adventure. I have learned so much from ya'll over the years ...thank you.
Do you mean you freeze dried bread? Or am I misunderstanding?
@@leannmendoza3854 I've heard to freeze dry some bread as your first load in a new freeze dryer to remove the "new" smells.
@@job955 ah...ok, I suppose thst makes sense. Thank you!
We are loving our freeze dryer. So far we’ve been drying individual items, now we’ll try left overs. Thank you!
When you freeze dry foods the freeze dryer takes out only the water. You put water back in to Rehydrate it, not "reconstitute" it. It wasn't de-constituted
If you like lamb, you'll LOVE this one... Take the broth and freeze dry that. Instant broth or gravy fixins. Same with chicken....and beef...
Just an FYI a hair straightener is an inexpensive way to seal Mylar bags. It works amazing and can be found at thrift stores for $1
Aren't they fairly wide? A narrow seal wastes less bag, so they can be resealed several times. I do this with my vacuum freezer bags; I cut them extra long from the roll for this purpose.
@@micheleolson9914 you don't have to use the whole width. It's surprising how easy it is to control. Just use the edge. Better for some that don't want to spend $75 on a sealer. Vacuum sealers won't all work on Mylar
I have a Mylar sealer
I now have a Freeze dryer! Didn’t know they existed until seeing your 1st video. Thanks!
Just blowing my mind. I like that ball cap. Split pea soup is also my fav.. and I like it thick. This is awesome..
Have to skip this one, can not afford a freeze dryer. God Bless, stay safe.
There is a lay away option.
@@melodylyons4631 Thank you. Still dropping 3 grand on food preservation. Will keep canning and dehydrating. I will spend the money on a greenhouse.
When cell phone cost 1k+ this is definitely worth saving for.
@@carolclarkson4859 Thank you. My phone from WM was $49.
Shoot, I can't afford the down payment!
I ended up buying a medium sized freeze dryer after watching your videos. I love storing up all our garden goodies and leftovers. And saves me time and space!
Sarah, you need to write a cookbook
I agree!
You two look happy and healthy God bless you
You two are so adorable together. I'll order a bag of chili, please!
You two are the most thoughtful and generous ambassadors for how to help people become completely food independent. What an awesome demo and opening 5 different meals for your viewers. I wish you continued success and happiness with your homestead.
We love our freeze dryer! Use it all the time for fruit.
Got our Harvest Right about two months ago. Just love it! Please do a video on how you're storing & organizing all the mylar bags. Currently standing them up on the shelf by my canning jar foods, but need a better option. My husband says we need a file cabinet, but I just don't know....:)
Great question
Oh my gosh just imagining Sarah and Kevin as grands just made me choke up. They would be such a pair, showing off them grandbabies like new born animals, HeHe! Love and Blessings y'all!
🙏😔🙏😔🙏😉Aaaaaaahhh you two help me through the day I miss my Homestead but at last I live in an apartment my better half God bless his soul had to leave me continue to give me great joy thank you so much for making this RUclips thingies.😎😉😂😍💖❤💚💜💙💛💖
Your "Mexican Chicken Soup" looks a lot like Tortilla Chicken Soup. One of my favorites to make in the crock pot and can up. Great Video, always so informative and entertaining. Your relationship is a blessing to me.
Am so excited. I ordered a large freeze dryer, Feb 24. Delivery date was end of May or June. Got a message it shipped yesterday. Ty for ur videos. I've saved them all. 👍💜
💡- Keeping a diary of fresh weight Vs dried weight after reconstitution them will make it easier for future meals. Also, you can easily add your boiling water straight into the mylar bag, fold the top over, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. It will help keep the heat in and can be served straight out of the bag. For those curious as to why mylar : Mountain House is a top tier company and has been using it for their freeze dried foods for decades. They have done testing on samples and advertise their food tastes as fresh as it did when processed up to 25 years later. They have even tested it after 30 years and have said it won't be long before they feel comfortable updating the 25 year mark to 30.
Thank you so much dear friends for wonderful work and share your informations with me 😘😘😘.
How in the world did you freeze dry soup, stews and sauces? Have you made a tutorial on this? Genius, thanks so much for sharing and going into depth regarding the differences. Love your channel.... you two are just too cute and smart!
Still waiting for my HR freeze dryer also! So exciting! My son is getting tired of listening to my ideas for trying things....ie..what about freeze dried homemade saurkraut???? Love your videos! Will be using the egg ideas. Also, will be freeze drying my buttermilk, etc that can get dated before I (by myself) can use them. Even that great container of strawberries! Keep up the good work!
Pea soup with ham is one of my favs...the thicker the better. All of the soups sound amazing. One day maybe we can purchase a freeze dryer, looks like fun to use.
Okay, I learned two things:
1. I want a freeze dryer.
2. I'm hungry
Me too.
Same!
I've had my freeze dryer for 2+ years and it is amazing..it runs almost constantly..
Amen
@@lindalevrio3319 Me Also! We just got ours a month ago, and it has been running non-stop pretty much. Best investment you can make!!!
How cool is that. Glad it is worth the money spent. Plus, it stores well for 25 yrs. so much better than any other preserving measures.
I hope to save enough to get one. I'm retired and on a fixed income but feel like this would save money in the long run. I want to save food for my family. Thank you for the honest review.
I can't wait for my freeze dryer to arrive. I have been saving for awhile now. Can hardly wait
LOVE How you are DOING THIS! HUGS, take it easy! dehydrating fruits and veg to crisp and putting them in mylar with oxygen absorber and with desiccant keeps them forever too!
So cool for you to be this detailed about your new adventure. Answering lots of our questions. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I am looking forward to receiving mine I have broth in my freezer that I’d like to freeze dry take up space in my freezer right now and it be just be awesome to store it for later use and not have to take up space in the freezer for other things
Home made MRE. That's cool. Love your videos. Need to see the piglets again. Take care.
Love the Ford hat. I have the same one.
So nice cause nit every one want same thing for dinner all the time this give u a choice and u know the kids and family has great meal easy for mom ! Dad too !!
We’ve been discussing a freeze dryer down the road thanks to you guys. Have a great weekend.
HR is having a contest right now, the grand prize is a medium sized freeze dryer, I just entered - it ends 5/18
Looks pretty cool folks!!! Especially the split pea soup! mmm!
I'm envious of Kevin! Dinner of 4 of my 5 favorite soups at the same time! If you had freeze dried potato and ham soup too, my wife and I would have been packing our bags. Lol! Bless ya all!
Sara? What is your butternut squash soup recipe? Please share 😂
Yes please share 🙏🏼❣️🙏🏼
Right. Ironically enough I was telling my husband about them freeze drying as I was looking up butter squash soup recipes and 5 minutes later I went to RUclips and saw this video. The other dishes looked good too.
These two are great ...like the channel ...gotta get one of those things ...I always have leftovers 😆
You can get a much better vacuum seal on your jars by taking the rack out of your freeze dryer and putting a tray in upside down to use as a flat surface to set jars on. Then just put the jars on the tray with loose rings and go into the customize option on the freeze dryer and test the vacuum pump. That will give you a very good vacuum in your jars and if you keep them in a dark place the light won't be a problem.
Awesome Information on your freeze-dried food. I just purchased my first Harvest Right; I'm so excited and can't wait to start using it. It seems the possibilities are endless.
What about making slips fior jars to reduce light exposure? OH,I got it! Like the fabric bags to hold plastic bags with elastic openings at both ends! Perfect - allows jar bottom to sit sturdy on shelf. Maybe a great side job for home sewers.
Thank you for showing the rehydration process. I appreciate all you’re hard work
This was great!! Only thing is.... Need your Mexican soup and Chili Bean recipes!!
You might discuss those bags, where you get them and how you use them
I have never sent a letter or message to anyone, but you two are truly a blessing to watch and listen to. Kevin and I have so much in common as far as the outdoors go. Also I have been learning so much watching you both. Hope this finds you well, God Bless and have a great day.

I just LOVE watching you two. You are so adorable together. You keep it real. I learn so much. I find myself smiling when you all are making these videos.
One day I hope everyone takes advantage of all the good u bring to it!
You've answered so many of the questions that I've been wondering about with freeze drying. Thanks for your channel and your awesome insight.
I was just wondering you dont have to answer but I know you all have God in your life and it seems you both have the ultimate respect for each other do you really both get a long off camera as you do on? Its soo refreshing to see and I love your videos. When I talk to people I mention your names like Sarah was doing this and Kevin was doing that like we are neighbors or friends. Thanks for the wonderful videos I have learned soo much. About to put the money down for our 1st freeze dryer and looking for property that we can kind of do what you are doing and doing things that is not the 9-5 but things that make our Hearts sing......... that will bring us both a lot of peace and happiness!
I would love one of these just for the fun of it, but my garden is not large enough to justify it. I’ll just have to keep enjoying your adventures in freeze-drying. I’d love to try those freeze-dried ice cream sandwiches!
I even freeze-dry sliced roast. So weird as after freeze-drying it, it will crush to powder under your finger push. Once rehydrated-just like freshly roasted!
Good morning! My husband and I live vicariously through your videos! We’re retired on our land, in the home we’ve worked to build for our family for the past 37 years here in central PA. Not in a very good homesteading location for much livestock. But we could do some small stuff and definitely plant a garden. I’ve been a soap maker and amateur herbalist for a years, my husband is a welder. We’ve done some of the preservation and other things you show in your kitchen but now have the time to really make it a way of life. Anyway, looking to learn more and possibly add some small animals for the grandkids. You two are such a sweet couple and work so hard but make it look easy. Nice family. God bless!
i have been wanting a freeze dryer for a good while now. Once my husband seen the chili and that he can have chili all year around he now says he is gonna get one. lol ty so much for this video!!!
I make our own dog food in bulk and freeze dry. Also you should freeze dry sausage gravy... omg yummy!
I bought one a few months because of your videos! Thank you so much!!! We LOVE our machine. Please post recipes of your soups and sauces PLEASE! Thank you!
NUMMY!!! NOW~ for the Recipes.... :) Thank You Always love Your FD Videos and All of your Videos!!!
No questions. I have learned so much from you guys. I just want to thank you.
Pam and Jim from Rose Red Homestead just recently bought the same freezer dryer and she did something neat and wondered if you have tried it yet. If you remove the racks and trays, you can vacuum pack a bunch of quart jars at one in the machine. I thought that was pretty cool. Anyways, love your videos on the freeze dryer, thank you
You guys got me motivated, reminding me that I put a down payment on a Harvest Right freeze dryer a couple of years ago, and then didn't follow up with the payments. They still have the money, sitting there, waiting for me to finish it up. We did our income taxes yesterday, and lo and behold! MORE than enough money to pay off the freeze dryer to get it in here, in time for our garden produce to start producing! YAY! Just so folks know, there's a 10-week lead time to getting the freeze dryers in, so if you want one, you'll need to pay $1,000 down, which will start the assembly for the dryer for you, and you pay the balance upon shipment at the end of that 10 weeks. And you can make payments to get to that $1,000, on layaway! So don't think you HAVE to come up with all the money at once.
@@SL_Smith I was in the tail end of their backlog. I still don't have the Impulse Sealer, because they were back-ordered on them, and I would guess that they were shipping the units out without them, to get rid of the backlog, sitting on the units until the sealers came in. It appears they decided to go ahead and ship them without the sealers, because I reached out to my sales manager, and he said that they got a shipment of the sealers in last Friday (5/21/21) but I never got notified that it was on its way to me, so my guess is that they shipped out the ones they got in, to those that were older back-orders that were shipped ahead of mine, and are now out of them again. I bought a cheap 12" one off of Amazon that will suffice until I get the one I paid for from HarvestRight, and then it will become my backup unit. The ones from HarvestRight are 18".
The machines are expensive but when you use one you can see why. We love ours & feel it is high quality. How we afforded it was to go in as an extended family. However, it really would be hard to move and needs a home base. There is a small learning curve & now we can’t live without it. Sort of like the Instant Pot it changed how we cook. I haven’t been able to find one canning lid since last spring so tho I will still can, will be leaning harder on FD, dehydrator and freezing I guess. Getting an extra set of trays really helps. Then you can have one set pre-feezing in your freezer, which really speeds things up.
That is awesome you guys learning so much video great. Prayers for the Kneady Homesteaders. Tragic tradegy has happened to family
I love mine and freeze dry everything!!
I have been interested in freeze drying when I first heard about it thanks for the video!! What I would do when reconstituting the soup is use chicken broth for more flavor!!!
Learning so much! My harvest right is on its way.😀
This is great for Grandma and Grandpa 🥰
Although it’s not very practical for our small family of 3 - who don’t garden or have feed animals- but I am fascinated! Hope you both are doing better following the loss of Hope. ❤️
My goodness this entire process is an awesome mind blowing experience to watch. I can’t wait to try.
You guys are so fun to watch So
Informative and so fun to see your delight in the tasting the meals
Thanks for sharing these results with your freeze dryer--it is on my wish list.
I am so drawn to your channel. I wish this type of information was around 40 years ago when I was big into gardening, canning and freezing. Now it's old age and just me I'm feeding me. I enjoy seeing all your reasons to do things, and also what things didn't work and why. You guys are an amazing couple. Keep sharing, and we will keep watching! God Bless~!
What a great idea to freeze dry leftovers. I usually make to much food and that would be great to dry and not have to eat it for days and days.
Okay Kevin and Sarah you guys are starting to cost me money now I've got to check in to a freeze dryer LOL love your videos thank you
