I have both of a dehydrator, and freeze dryer. I’m like you Becky, I love them both for different things. The one thing I can say about the medium versus the large freeze dryer, is the large freeze dryer requires a designated outlet. The medium can be plugged into any outlet. That is the only reason I went with a medium over a large. I Did not want to have to hire an electrician to put in a special plug, plus if I decided I wanted to use it in a different location, I wouldn’t be able to. Great video

Tips for a freeze dryer: (especially if you live in a humid/hot climate)
    1. Its best to take out 1 tray at a time and package it to prevent moisture from softening it. Also it's best to warm the trays a few times to make sure the food is not cold so that when you open the door it doesn't attract moisture to it. (think about condensation on a cold glass)
    2. Its possible to fit more food onto the tray to maximize your use of the freeze dryer. I've found that I can do multiple layers of certain foods with parchment paper between them. Ex. 3 layers of banana slices per tray.
    3. If you have the ability to prefreeze your trays you'll save so much freeze drying time. This is great especially if its the summer months as the freeze dryer can dump a lot of heat into your home while its running which makes your ac have to work harder.

We freeze our fruits on our second set of trays in the deep freeze before we put them in the freeze dryer, makes for less time! My favorites are blueberries, strawberries, bananas and blackberries! We use the silicone pan liners so things like fruit don’t stick to the pans. We just freeze dried a months worth of breast milk for my niece who has twin girls. We put the portions in Mylar bags and she’s good to go! Freeze dried chicken and ground beef (cooked) comes back nicely!! Love your channel Becky!! Dehydrating removes a major part of the nutrition vs. freeze drying keeps around 97% of the nutrition.

This video is exactly what I needed to see! Not in a place to get either right now but as much as I like dehydrated fruits I think freeze dried is what I would want to use more! I would love to see the soups you have made and how to reconstitute them into soup :)

I hear you. I cant afford either right now but my air fryer supposedly dehydrates. I'm gonna try dehydrating some sweet potatoes for our dog pretty soon. We will see how that works out. Can't imagine it would be close to using a real dehydrator. 🤔

Craving one of your videos so I am Watching this one for a second time as just received my work table to set up my Harvest Right Freeze dryer. I can dehydrate in my oven at a low temp for hours but freeze drying will take my food preservation to a new level. We are planning our 2024 garden and will start seedlings here in a week or two here in Tx.

Another great video Becky. I have a suggestion. When cutting bananas, strawberries and mushrooms you can use the pampered chef egg slicer (if you have one). Then, all of your slices will be even. When I sold Pampered Chef, we would recommend using the egg slicer for other things. I can't guarantee it to work with other egg slicers as I don't know how strong they are. You can also get replacement wires, so you don't need to buy another one. Or you can use an egg slicer from a dollar store and if it needs replacing it's only $1.25.
