Tbh I'm waiting for the day the Iris or the ergodox support analog sticks! Although I'm probably dreaming. Im about to build my first keyboard. It's an Iris with lubed gat clears.
I got to say this is my favorite layout, I wish more mainstream companies adopted this layout. This and CA 66 is the best of all mechanical layouts. The isolated arrow keys and isolated modifiers are so nice. Love it, spacious and compact in all the right spots.
I’m in love with this keyboard. After nearly a decade away I’m back into PCs and have since found my way into the universe of keyboards - so I’ve been looking at a ton lately. This is just perfect to me. Awesome job.
I remember when I first saw this board after getting a GK61, about 3 months into the hobby I was like "Woahowha I really like that." Fast forward today it's been almost 2 years and after waiting and getting an L on the initial GB from 2020, I was able to grab one from the CK extras drop. Cannot express how extremely happy and grateful I am. Yes it's just a keyboard, but this hobby has given me a way to reflect and calm things down, a way for me to show my feelings, show something I love and care about. I've been inspired to build over 30+ boards since I started and I have to thank the many RUclipsrs like you TaeKeyboards. Now I am $$$$ down but filled with delight, keebs are life.
Returning to the video that started it all for me. I finally got the chance to join Round 2 for this keyboard. I ordered mine in pirate black 7u and WKL. Grabbed an additional carbon fiber plate. I never thought I'd spend anywhere near that much on a keyboard when I first watched this video but here I am :p
I was trained in the USAF on soldiering techniques 30 years ago and I gotta tell ya, your soldering looks spot on. I would think you had some form of professional training or something. One thing to note, flux is acidic and will negatively affect metal over time. We never left it on a circuit board destined for an aircraft frame. Can't have it failing while in flight. Washing the board with a small brush and alcohol to remove most of it will allow your product to last for years to come.
I had a similar plate issue on my gk64, what I did to remedy it was to chuck a piece of foam between the plate and pcb and literally rip it off when I soldered everything in. I was lucky enough that I had some foam on me that was a close enough width that I could still press the switches all the way down while not being too thin that the plate would fall down again. Hope this helps.
I do around the edge and two columns down the middle first making sure they're all flush. Gotta pull up on the plate for some combos of plate/switches.
I usually do corners/mods and then work in “stripes”, vertical columns of keys that are horizontally a few keys apart, so that the plate gets a “support structure” across the pcb. This way if there are any problem areas (like a plate that’s not perfectly straight) they are dealt with in a somewhat uniform way, and the remaining switches should be somewhat easier to slide in. With this method you can either solder as you go, or try to get all switches seated perfectly first, which is my preference. Important to go slow, and if a switch is really killing you try another one. Also: using a spare keycap to push the switches in can really help on the finger strain.
Haha, that's one big solder sucker ;) So for me, I tend to start from the middle out, I use Anchor switches in various points on the pcb where I feel like the most flex is possible. I think every board is different though.
I did really pick the worst possible time to get heavily into this stuff, every single manufacturer is out of stock because of the current global events affecting us all. But some day I will sink way too much of my savings into a custom keyboard, and it's all thanks to you and RUclips recommendations.
I use multiple plastic clamps (from my carpentry projects) to push the switches completely towards the PCB. After these are soldered in, I simply ask my wife to press the PCB down in the middle until I have soldered in enough switches to eliminate the natural tendency of the plate to balloon outwards. I get consistent results with the DZ60 Rev 3 boards this way. These PCBs have the worst PCB pin retention due to the loose tolerances. Better built boards such as the solder PCB for the KBD67 mkII designed by ai03 do not need such gymnastics at all, because it holds the plastic PCB mounting pins on the switches exceptionally well.
Beautiful build. You've got great attention to detail. I usually solder in one or two switches in each corner first then do the rest row by row, similar to how you do, but starting in the middle then working out is a good idea. I usually do all of the switches that are in 1U x 1U plate slots first because they can't be crooked (unless the plate is garbage or they're not actually pressed in), then I do all the wider keys and stabilized keys making sure to double check for straightness.
for anyone wanting this keeb, the gmmk pro is a good alternative. it also have a knob and is only $169(nice). It's not for sale yet but you can get one of the batches and get it shipped in june. It's probably gonna be my person endgame

Man, can we just take a moment to appreciate the "jump-in" to the action? No 15 second, gaudy over-the-top intro with cheesy dubstep, no 3 minute sponsorship lecture, just straight up keyboard building in a calm atmosphere.
it's worth noting that for most, if not all high-end stabs, the band-aid mod usually isn't necessary. Most high-end stabs when clipped usually _do not_ bottom out onto the pcb, unless you type like an ogre.
