yeah this reminds me of OG Everquest, was revolutionary at the time. Having to consider the enemy strength to make sure you can handle it then dying and losing exp and your body with your loot. That got old after a while, often needing to enlist a strong player to drag your body back to you and paying them a tip for service. etc.
Also, kudos on maintaining the healthy living outside of gaming.

I have over 40 hours in the game so far, and loving it overall. This is giving me the feels of wonder i had when i first played EQ back in 2000. Great welcoming community, and overall the game play I expected. Its combat is better than old EQ, but I find it satisfying enough on my Enchanter. The fact you need the support and crowd control classes make this feel like those old skool mmos where you really had to work for levels. Maybe because I played the old EQ, the xp loss + corpse run doesnt bother me as much, and at least you keep your gear, and it is not a naked corpse run of shame.

I'm 62 hours in and my biggest complaint is it's starting to interfere with my personal life like work and family... AKA it's my high school days all over again when I was playing EQ and WoW instead of doing homework 😂. Although this is only the next stage of Pantheon's development (that they're calling "Early Access"), I'm excited for the future considering how much flipping fun I'm having. The world feels alive and the community is super helpful. I think even new comers that don't come with a preconceived expectation would have a blast, regardless of their MMO background. One thing to note is this is an MMORPG and not your traditional MMO... there's a difference when you add the RPG element back in.

This game is basically a modern take on EverQuest 1. For me its pretty nostalgic because EQ1 was my first MMO, but as you can see from the dying mechanic I would not want to repeat it again. I was spoiled by WoW. Players cannot loot your body until you give them permission. Corpse runs were fairly big deals in EQ. You had to gather a party and clear out the area to drag the body to an area where you could safely loot. There were PvP servers like Tallon Zek and Vallon Zek if I can remember properly (spelling is probably off) and you could loot one piece of armor and take their money but you didnt lose your bags or what were in them. So people loved to gank you and steal your chest armor. There was a time I had a friend fall into the pit trap at Blackburrow Den (after I told him to stay AWAY from the tree with the pit trap) and I had to rescue him. There were groups of people farming various levels of the dungeon so it was clear enough to make my way to his body.
So I grabbed all his stuff and got aggroed at the last second. Ran all the way through the dungeon trying to find my way out, Indiana Jones style. One day I went back with a high level character to see just what happened and I had managed to pull the entire zone. I had made all the wrong choices on how to get out and I even pulled the main boss. It was the biggest train to zone ever and everyone in the zone died. I had to log off for the day because the hate messages wouldn't stop lol. BUT... I had successful rescued my friend who I gave a quick scolding to.
These games had a unique charm to them though. I liked the lighting system, requiring a light source. It was cool to play like an assassin and see people running through the woods at night and try to sneak up on them and gank them hehe. The game also had a language system and you could learn various languages on your character. For instance I made a troll shadowknight (my favorite) and my friend made a human mage. While it took FOREVER to learn human common because of my characters low intelligence, my friends mage learned trollispeak in like 10 minutes because of his characters high intelligence.
You just spammed messages in a tell to each other and as your skill leveled up more and more characters would be translated to english. One day my friend was playing without me and came across a group of trolls playing together. They started talking inn troll speak about how they were going to eat his character. He then started up a spell so his hands glowed and said in trollspeak I don't think you are going to be eating me today. They loved it so much they let him join the party.
You get so many cool moments like that in these types of games but oh my lord they can get tedious and one mistake can cause a mass corpse run that takes the rest of the day. It is something to experience at least once but I prefer my retail WoW. I guess i'm old like that. I like my conveniences. I proved my uber pve and pvp skills a long time ago and would rather just enjoy pretty graphics and animations with a story tied to it than anything else these days.

    A few things...
First, there are weapon and armor vendors. You were talking to the tradeskill vendors. They're not the same thing.
Second, the games death system rewards careful decision-making and punishes risk-taking that goes awry. It also adds value to grouping. Which the camp you were trying to harvest that node from is a small group grind spot. Also, cleric/shaman res will not only prevent you from needing to run. It also restores half of your lost xp. Necromancers later gain an ability to literally summon your corpse from anywhere other than if it's underwater. That also restores some of your lost xp. The death mechanics add value to those classes non-dps/heal functionality. The dangers also make classes like Monk, who are designed for pulling mobs for groups. And Enchanters who are designed around crowd control. Very desirable for groups to safely pull and clear mobs without dying.
Third, the game is in a rough state because of Unity. When Unity's CEO pulled their licensing change bullshit almost three years ago. The developers had to pull the game from that engine to avoid going bankrupt. As they'd have to pay for every person that installed the game. What you see is what a small developer on already exhausted kickstarter funds. Was able to develop using a scratch-made engine and no premade assets in only two years time. It's rough. But I dare anyone to try and do better with their team, budget, and time frame.
None of this is to say the game is amazing and will be a great success. But it does mean this game is NOT for everyone. And deserves at least an opportunity to achieve something. As it's a unique game in an industry that has gotten far too casual and mind-numbingly easy.

That's the way it was back in the old-school days of EQ (1999). People worked together as inter-dependency was a YUGE factor. I can also recall the people from Halas, the starting city for Barbarians, they'd come ALL the way over to my continent to play, then die, and they'd have a 45 minute travel time because they didn't bind in our city. Binding was another thing that you'd have to get from another player (if you could find a caster high enough to bind or willing to do so). Back in the day there was a lot of risk/reward and the risk could be painful.

  • @DraekosTV
    @DraekosTV 2 часа назад +3

22:40 when you flee from a mob, sprint to create some distance but NEVER let the stamina bar hit complete 0. If you do youll get an "exhausted" debuff which is why they kept catching you. Sprint until stamina is low, stop sprinting to allow the bar to refill, and sprint and repeat. The mob will eventually leash and you will escape most low level mobs unless you get rooted or nuked by a caster.
PS regarding death: when you get your corpse, target your body and type /corpse so you can drag your corpse out of harms way. As long as you get your corpse, none of your loot will ever disappear.

The game is still in alpha, Masteries was temporarily shut off for further development, another player can drag your corpse to help you, there will be a static map later but no gps, this game is very EQ-centric, as much as you were mad at dying it still seems that you were having fun, if you want a quest you need to talk to npc's, there are no quest visuals, if you're in trouble run towards a guard and they will kill it. As an original EQ player from March of 1999, it was amusing to watch someone experience what we went through in the classic MMO mode. When WOW came out a lot of game mechanics changed as a result of players not liking the harsh death systems, lack of in-game maps, quest and non-hand holding. Pantheon, for all intent and purpose, is designed to recreate that old school feeling. Your impressions were fair and understandable, considering the day an age we're in with game mechanics and graphics. A close friend of mine is still playing EQ. Amazing to think it's been 25 years.

Unity a couple years back tried to do some shifty stuff to games using their assets so Pantheon had to pivot. Most of the games current state was actually dont in the last 2 years since they had to start from basically scratch. The current art style was a strategic decision to help speed along development as its easier to create simple looking in-house assets and models for. The target audience has been playing everquest for 25 years so they aren't too concerned with visuals. They have confirmed graphics, lighting and animation will all improve over time.

If you know where the zone line is, you can run your train to the zone line, and cross over, which you'll lose aggro.
Death can be a Pita, but I've had great experiences in the process of going after my corpse as well. Because I've made friends that helped me while doing it.
Also, not sure if Pantheon has this or not, but EQ did. You can use /corpse, and drag your corpse. Usually, you can Activate it a small distance from your corpse, which will basically summon your corpse to you. So you can do it, outside the aggro range of a mob, or you can make a macro with /corpse on it, and just run by, spamming it, and just keep dragging your corpse, till you get some place save.
Corpse runs can be a pita, but I'm glad to see Pantheon is doing it. If you don't respect death, or the mobs, then it really makes fighting mobs boring. Having Consequences for your actions, is very important.

Yes, it's called player vs environment (PVE), and requires you to not mindlessly run around killing mobs without a thought in your mind. Now there's consequences to death, which makes you a bit more weary about running through a zone or going into a new area to fight. Some of us enjoy that. If you rather collect 25 quests, stare at a minimap while running from waypoint to waypoint then yea, this game wont be for you.

Considering the few hundred thousand people playing HARDCORE WoW. Where dying means your character is just done unless you transfer it. There's clearly an audience that wants their games to have a sense of risk vs reward. He was in an area designed for small groups to grind mob spawns. He got greedy and paid the price. That's a lesson you have to learn in this game. Also, if he had a shaman or cleric. They could have ressed him. Which not only prevent the run back. But also helps restore some of the lost xp. At higher levels, Necromancers can literally summon your corpse for you that also restores some of the lost xp. The death system adds weight and meaning to your choices. It also creates a demand for certain classes. Giving more purpose than simply "do damage, heal damage, tank damage."
This game does have its issues. It's in an alpha state. But the death system isn't one of those issues. This isn't the game for you. That's okay. But don't try to spin that as a negative for everyone. This is a selling point for some.

The game was being made in Unity and was nearing early release state a few years ago. When Unity pulled their greedy bullshit. The devs had to jump ship and start almost from scratch two years ago. What you're seeing is essentially an mmo made in a little over two years by a small developer. It's rough, it's incomplete, and has a long road ahead still. But much of that rests on the head of Unity's greed a few years ago. The licensing changes would have bankrupt and shuttered the developers if they released using Unity.

Releasing an mmorpg on their engine with their proposed changes would bankrupt the developers. They made the decision to develop their own engine and start from scratch. The reason why EQ was good was you struggle together. The game was sometimes not easy, it forced you to more or less always team up. When you died in EQ your body had everything on it. Asking for help was normal and other players most of the time did help you. I remember dying in lower guk once in classic EQ as a warrior and it was painful to get my body back. So I asked others for help and they showed up to support because they know how hard doing a corpse run can be.

I have been saying this for a couple of years now, since Brad passed away. They just went the route of "We need to finish it for the agreements/commitments, so we don't get sued" .... I am a HUGE EQ fan I played the first one and I loved the second one.... and all they did was use literally updated graphics for the first one, and added a couple of things form the second one.
I have had so many "fanboys" of a game that isn't even out yet, and has two predecessors that are FAR better than this, especially that it has taken TEN years for this ...
I bought 2 Black Rose packages.... and I am sad I did ( 500$ each) .... this was NOT what I essentially paid for. I understand it was a "pledge" and at that point in time, it was "subject to change" , 100% understood that. HOWEVER - This was NOT what Brad was going for at all .... not by any means. Project Gorgon is far superior to this honestly. And I am actually glad he mentioned that game, just a little bit.
If you want to play this game, you should literally just go play EQ1 or EQ2 ... at least they are still alive, fleshed out, and exactly what this is- *but better* .... the fact we are literally getting EQ1 *ten* years later , and it is 2024.... astounds me at how incompetent the developments team just literally gave up, and just want to move on. They should have just shut down, and let it die.
It's insane, that it took them 10 years, to make a reskinned EQ1 ... I know there is more to it than that, but still ...
I am so glad to see almost everyone agree with this in the comment section. Because everywhere else, it's just fan boys going "nuh uh, this is what it was supposed to be"
      *NO IT IS NOT*

Some of the negatives you listed like extreme dark environments and varying NPC nameplates are actually direct takes from the original EQ experience which definitely brought back memories. I haven't played the game for long, but I'm interested to see how the development in EA progresses. It's certainly gotten a way more positive reception than I thought it would.

Imagine my surprise when I see that I was mentioned in the video (Voltar). If you run across Voltar or Voltag and need anything give me a holler. I remember giving you the axe. I can make leather armor as well as leather bags which hold 10. Happy adventuring. Love your content by the way. Old time EQ/Vanguard player

The Ogre/Dark Myr starting area is unironically terrible. It was thrown together in a rush and compacted into a tiny area just for the sake of having a separate starting area for them. The first thing most players do is escape to the human/dwarf starting area to actually enjoy the game. Luckily, they're right next to eachother.
The Elf/Halfling starting area is rough because it's brand new, but it's nowhere near as bad as the Ogre/Dark myr area. Unfortunately it's about a half an hour run from Wild's End to Thronefast and that's without deaths.
The Ogre models are pretty sweet though, especially in full platemail.

@michaelmorrison5280 That does suck to hear. Hopefully those areas get more attention in the future.
The ogre models are rad, and will probably be my first pic

    • @michaelmorrison5280

@@lordlittletoeq8537 The problem is the Ogre and Dark Myr are supposed to start on a totally different continent that isn't in the game yet. As such, the starter area for them is 100% temporary and probably won't get developed further.
The Halfling and Elf starter already got an update two days ago and is going to be getting more work in the future.

Honestly, the consequences this game has for dying has me intrigued. I can't stand how games have taken this route that dying isn't even a slight inconvenience anymore, in fact it's often encouraged in games to learn enemy attack patterns and mechanics. Screw that, I like what they've done there.

This isnt its full potential. do some research on pantheons perception system. Its the way it ties in storyline quests and lore into the world. they are trying to hold back as much of the lore as they can but there is some old videos that will explain some things. But once perception comes out in full force exploring is gonna be 10X even better

I feel that I need to clear up some of the criticism here. Number 1: The graphics and the UI, currently in the game, is placeholder and will eventually be replaced. Number 2: There will be a map added to the game, however it's not yet ready. Number 3: You can buy gear in the form of armour and weapons from vendors in the village :P Number 4: The crafting currently in game is in a very early stage and will be improved upon significantly. Remember that this game is currently in a very early alpha stage, so if everything goes as planned for the devs then this game will look very different a year from now. I hope this cleared up some of the negative aspects that you encountered in the game

So the key phrase is "if everything goes according to planned" Which it hasn't at all in 10 years. The graphics won't change. They won't be making enough money to do anything. This release was the last money grab they had left because of the HUGE backlash they got from EVERYONE when they tried to release a Pantheon Battle Royale game to accumulate funds for the real Pantheon.

Reasonable review. My only issue is that you don't really spend much time acknowledging that the game is still years from launch, and most of your complaints are about things that are either WIP or 100% placeholder (i.e. the UI).
Ongoing issue I see with streamers "reviewing" in-dev projects. Be critical, give your honest opinion, but at least give it the fair shake of emphasizing it hasn't actually launched.

    • @moforyguy6803

Placeholder till game launches is just an excuse the devs use. Its looked like shit for a long time and the little amount of money they make from charging 40 dollars to about 700 people total isn't going to be enough to change anything.

I don't think he has to. He paid his 40 bucks. The history of the games development isn't in any way necessary most steam users don't care about that or that parts of it are WIP. They paid their 40 bucks and they expect their 40$ worth

This game is very bland and not worth the money. Its trying to be an updated EQ1 but its not quite hitting the mark. After having played for a while i feel the need to warn others. The gameplay loop similar to EQ, but it doesnt have any of the charm. If you're looking to replace P1999 with this, you'll be disappointed. Not everything can be chalked up to "its still in EA". They've been developing this game for a decade. Not entire sure development has a firm idea on what it wants to be.
To those seeking the next EQ1-like experience, I'd suggest Monsters & Memories instead.
