Look at Italy! Look how much it costs! I live there and I spend 70€ of a full tank of diesel in my little Kia Cee'd, that's over 80$... And Gasoline costs even more and a friend of mine who owns a BMW 320i pays around 90€ for a full tank, well over 100$!!! And that's every two weeks... Plus, the property tax here in Italy is absolutely absurd and if you own a car that has 250hp you have to pay around 1000€ a year for it and if you have a even more powerful car, it's 20€ for each KW more. So basically owning a Hellcat would be like paying 5.000€ a year for it, if not more. Italy, the country of Maserati, Ferrari, Lamborghini... but everyone here drives Fiat Punto and Fiat Panda.
Yeah.
It sucks here.
But fortunately EVs are gonna save us, if they move their asses trying developing the infrastructure.

That cost difference is why Europeans are so mindful about mpg and low displacement while over here in America we like our big v8s with bad mpg just because we can while shooting bald eagles out the back
I'm literally so jelaous of americans

i don't want to give a single fuck about insurance and mpgs but unfortunately i have to 😠
Also europe is going to shit anyway because of the migration crisis and it won't be safe anymore so i'll move to america as soon as i can
And also because taxes are calculated based on displacement.
Also in Europe you usually have most roads being very twisty, so a V8 would be even worse in mpg than it does in America with almost all straights
Personally I much prefer high rev engines than V8s. A V8 just seems like a sleepy electricity generator engine

In America we don’t shoot bald eagles.

There's a company in Canada that is working to produce gasoline by extracting Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere, so we could have completely carbon neutral fuel and put it into our gasoline engines. We wouldn't have to buy new cars to switch, and it would last as long as normal cars, without having the risk of failure that hybrids and solar panels have.
hopefully this synfuel really takes off, that way combustion motors can continue long into the future.
Carbon dioxide can't burned. It almost impossible to used It as a fuel
The concept of converting Carbon dioxide back into gasoline is very complicated. Please don’t bet on this technology being industrially viable in the next 50 years. Don’t get me wrong, you can (in a lab) take carbon dioxide and form gasoline. The problem is the amount of energy you need to put into the system makes it so you are always going to spend more energy than you get out of this process.
www.google.com/amp/s/relay.nationalgeographic.com/proxy/distribution/public/amp/2018/06/carbon-engineering-liquid-fuel-carbon-capture-neutral-science
Here is the article you mentioned. I’d like to point out a few lines in this National Geographic article
1. “While the process requires a lot of electricity, the pilot plant in Squamish uses renewable hydro power. “
2. “It costs more than a barrel of oil right now, but in places with a price on carbon of $20 a ton we’re competitive.”
Oh neat, but we already have that. It's called ethanol. Plants take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to grow. Then we process it into ethanol. Then burn it, in total releasing less Co2 than it took to produce.
Ethanol has been used in cars for years. Brazil has been using e100 fuel since the 70s and most modern cars are rated at least for e85 (though actually they can typically handle e100)
Thank you so much for mentioning the negatives of ethanol! We should absolutely stop subsidizing it and use the land to grow food! Great video on all points.
All negative comments about ethanol fuel are incorrect. They are either lies, exaggerations, or myths. They were mostly invented by the petroleum oil industry.
Ethanol doesn't harm engines, it cleans engines. It doesn't suck water out of the air, but it will absorb water that naturally forms because of condensation. Gasoline can't do this so people have to resort to using engine additives that can cost as much as 2 or 3 gallons of gasoline. All liquids are corrosive, especially water. However, ethanol is less corrosive and compatible with more types of rubber, plastic, and metal than gasoline and aromatics. BTU values (energy content) are irrelevant when discussing internal combustion engines. Ethanol use does not affect the price of food.
If you are disseminating negative information about ethanol you are WRONG! I don't care who you are, where you went to school, or who you know; there are no negatives to using ethanol fuel. If you are in academia or employed in an industry that comes in contact with ethanol fuel, and you disagree with me, I will be happy to debate you in public at a forum of your choosing.

We should be using hydrogen fuel cells/electric cars to power all city vehicles. Gasoline cars for fun/weekend cars & diesel cars for road trips long distance traveling.
You're saying every person should own three cars?
Manufacturing also tends to be bad for the environment.
@@DarxusC
Yee.
@@DarxusC No, every person should own a PHEV that can independently propel itself using both a decently sized battery for city use (50 miles is enough for most people, but have several sizes to choose from), and a combustion engine that can be used reliably for long distance travel, as well as a backup in case the battery or motor fails.
"Fun" cars are obviously for more wealthy people, but if it's just one car you'd own, and you want it to be dependable and have freedom of use, it should be a PHEV.

Ethanol production does NOT cause food prices to rise. If anything, it actually makes food cheaper.
The corn used in the fermentation process is field corn, and is grown primarily for livestock. Humans are not physically capable of digesting this type of corn. In simplest terms, Ethanol is basically moonshine. During the fermentation process, the yeasts consume the carbohydrates, starches and other sugars in the corn, leaving behind everything else in the mash (such as protein, vitamins, fats, etc). This mash is then dried and enriched with a syrup (another by-product) and then resold to farmers as a cheap, high-protein, nutritious feed for livestock that is also low in carbs and starches (which are actually bad for the animals). In total, less than 20% (by weight) of corn is consumed by ethanol production. However, this consumption is offset by the fact that DDGs (industry acronym for Dried, Distiller's Grains) are better for livestock, allowing them to grow more and faster than they would with straight corn (ask any body builder why they consume extra protein, instead of carbs).
There are many other benefits to using ethanol but I'm just going to stick with what was covered in the video.
Donut..Pure ethanol engines exist outside racetracks..Just look here in brazil. We use hydrous ethanol made from sugar cane since 70's.the first car to be offered was the Fiat 147 in 1978.Nowdays ALL NEW vehicles are flex fuel, they can run on gasoline or ethanol in any proportion. The prices oscilates more but it is alot cheaper than gasoline. The downside is the fact that sugar cane ethanol has naturally water in its composition, making it harder to burn.To resolve that ethanol engines have higher compression(and power) but bigger fuel consumption compared to gas engines..Not mentioning the nightmare to start a carburated ethanol engine in a cold day BUT the smell coming from the exhaust is better than anything else!.
after this, WheelHouse on alternative fuel / energy source sounds like a good idea

Several mentions about pollution, yet our air is vastly cleaner than it was just a couple decades ago despite more cars and many more miles driven. If you are older than 30, you can see the differences tech has made in internal combustion engines.
Shhh! If you aren't flailing around in a panic screaming about pollution, they'll come for you!
cleaner /= clean, we simply bought ourselves some time.
You'll get them really mad if you mention than none of the climate disaster predictions have ever come true.
I mean this is true bc of several laws and restrictions that were put in place in the US during the 70s and 80s, but the thing is the year to year improvement in air quality has basically come to a standstill in major population centers in the US. Along with the fact that massively populated countries like China and India don't have as strict regulations on their pollution output. While it's fine and dandy to say we're doing better than we were 30 years ago, the US is doing better in terms of localized air pollution, but climate change is still a large looming problem for everyone regardless of where you live bc actual pollution affects the entire global population.
Most of these yuppie brats don't know about the scrubbers installed in coal-burning plants, or the fact that most pollution is coming from Asia.

Just change fuel filter regularly and she's smooth sailing.
Love the videos. However you make it seem like gas and pollution are a big issue. I'm here to tell everyone that climate change is not a lie but pointing at gas powered vehicles and calling them the cause is untrue. It may have been true back in the late 70s before extreme pollution control measures were introduced. Fact is, since that era pollution from cars has declined to a point where (in 2016) they were not causing any more damage to the environment. As a matter of fact, new cars have so little pollution that the climate has and should be able to reverse, while we still use gasoline. The truth is that Nitrogen and other chemicals from raising cattle account for more than 75% of global warming. Nitrogen also is just over 9x worse than CO2, and would show much greater results (10 yrs vs 100yrs for complete climate reversal) watch Cowspiracy, it will give a good understanding to this issue. I understand that as responsible car and motorcycle enthusiasts we must be seen as responsible. However, as long as your not rolling coal or running used motor oil in diesels your car or bike is not the issue. Not saying we all should become vegetarians, but we should really try to limit or cut out red meat from our diets (its not even all that healthy) and eat more white meats and veggies. Also, several people have analyzed electric power (something governments should have done before the Paris accords) and they concluded that if we made every gas station a charging station our power grid could never live up to the task. Even if it could, there wouldn't be enough power around to actually support modern day industries. Electric cars are cool, but they really should not be thought of as a viable replacement for oil.
Diesel is the past, and diesel will be the future, too, in my opinion.
Unfortunately diesels have been all but killed off by emissions standards in the USA. Owned a modern diesel lately? Completely unreliable junk. Nothing but problems surrounding the complex emissions sytems.
A lot of European cities no longer allow you to drive diesels in them.
Electric and solar is the way forward i guess. The petroleum guzzlers have to stop for the sake of environment at some point

Great comments, love cars in a resposable way.
Just for curious fact: here (Brazil) we use Ethanol as sort of biofuel since the 70s. The reasoning is that Gasoline is too expensive and Ethanol was an affordable alternative. Nowadays we have bi-fuel engines that can run a mix of Gasoline and Ethanol at any rate. Also, we also have the option to use Natural Gas (GNV) in cars as well, although it's more common to see those on cabs, as you need to install a cilinder inside the trunk to store the gas.
One thing you missed was the energy density of gasoline. It's power to weight ratio is unmatched to electric batteries and other power sources. That and it's ease of transport via pipeline, rail or truck
In the UK some petrol stations only offer really high octane ratings, and it is really annoying. It's like Regular 91, Extra 94 and Supreme 97. Most cheap cars will run just fine on 87, so why don't they only offer high octane ratings. I have also heard it's the same in some other European countries.

In Brazil, there was ethanol-only cars, mostly they had different pistons.
Audi has a brilliant new idea called e-diesel. would love to see a video about it so more people can become aware of its potential
This video was sponsered by G-Fuel. It has enough lead to make you run 35 miles per gallon.
Good video. You guys should've inclided biogas thou. It could replace all gasoline and diesel engines that are used today. Cows produce biogas in large quantities all the time and we know how to store it. In my opinion everybody should put some time into research this cause it really could solve most of the pollution in gas motors, and in that way make more un-ecofriendly motors at the same time possible to use in all around cleaner way.
Here in Brazil in the early 70' they produced the sugar cane ethanol and then pure ethanol engines were produced as a cheaper way to consume fuel , and It worked the pure sugar-cane ethanol cars were faster and they payed less price in fuel than Gasoline and diesel (actually i own one of those cars today ;-) ) Sorry for the bad english still learning.

Ah, lol. 5:05, 5:09 - that's where RedPilotSun got his idea for the "Biodiesel fuel" video.
Hey Donut Media!
Uh you should do a follow up video to this one showing how carbon neutral fuels (like Audi's Isooctane) can bridge the gap as an interim energy source until battery (or super capacitors or what have you) energy densities can exist on parity or better than liquid fuels (though this may not even be a possibility chemically speaking- we don't know yet). Look up theoretical high energy density battery chemistries, it's fascinating to read about.
I also wanted to point out that you can make fully synthetic carbon neutral Diesel with a variety of isomers of Nonane and Decane. With ICE technologies on the horizon like Cargine's (Koeniggsegg, also known as qamfree) Camless Pneumatic Valvetrain, ever increasingly thermally efficient combustion cycles (cough, Mazda, Toyota, etc) and the Advent of designer alternative CN fuels.. light hybridization.. the future of the piston engine is not at all bleak! And I welcome advanced EV tech! I love EVs! But since they are only viable to a select few night now, I think pushing the envelope with engine and fuel design is the best move.
Like for mentioning biodiesel. Consider SVO too.
