Americans Thought Smog Was an Enemy Attack | WheelHouse

- Smog didn’t always exist. At first, no one understood where smog came from. The sudden arrival of harmful pollution caused widespread pandamonium and many to draw their own conclusions about the origins of smog. In this week’s episode of Wheelhouse, Nolan will take you on trip back in time to relive one of the Nation’s biggest solved mysteries about an emerging global epidemic.
WheelHouse answers all the questions about the automotive world you never thought to ask. Nolan Sykes looks at the history, sociology and psychology behind the cars you love, and the features you might overlook.

I appreciate this cooperation, Bart is very good with explaining stuff like that, but I think Nolan could do it good as well.
So glad that someone is helping tell the story of why relaxing emission standards is a terrible idea!

Little story, when I visited LA from NY in the nineties, I rented a car at LAX. When I drove down the hills, I smelled the engine burning. I pulled over & looked under the hood, nothing. Drove some more, smelled it again. Pulled over, popped the hood, nothing.
I pulled into a repair shop FUMING that the rental agency had given me a bum car. I asked a mechanic to look under the hood because I SWORE the engine was burning. The mechanic looked under the hood for five minutes, closed the hood, looked at me with a smile and asked, “You’re not from around here, are you?” I said “No, why?” He then said, “That’s the air.”
I can’t tell you how embarrassed & grossed out I was.
"It became so bad, they even had to wear masks"
that aged pretty damn well

Great info on this! Didn’t realize how much has gone into fighting smog.
This is by far the most important episode they have release car people should know this stuff !
Well yeah Americans but most other countries neved had that problem.
Over population + too many cars = SMOG
@@0hjaa3.06 You're wrong. A lot of cities around the world have a problem with air quality.
what i am confused about is that Germany is the largest country in central Europe but as far as i know we dont have Smog in cities like Munic
@@bastik.3011 la is in a basin, munich isnt. they dont have the same temperature inversion problem. and europe isnt nearly as car centric as the US is. so less cars, no inversion layer, = less smog. not no smog, less. you have smog. every city does.
@@Demonslayer20111 but you can see smog, and we dont have it as far as i know and Munich is placed in a huge valley
Nolan is getting so good at these. Like father like son I guess. Between this and up to speed, I'm not sure which one I like better.
Do a video about engine cooling system, water pump how it works and etc.
Is this because you don't understand how a pressurized cooling system works or are you in a debate with someone and need to end the argument
Bart making learning fun again. You're awesome bro.
Amazing video! Thanks guys. Glad more people are putting attention to the environment and cars. It’s difficult to do since what we love pollutes, so we’re sort of in a paradox
Hey Nolan these just keep getting better and better, As the auto teacher in a high school I want to share this fantastic presentation with the science and environmental teachers but also want to keep the coolness for my class. Thanks again for all the spectacular work done at the Donut Media group. P.S. I love the movie clips and subtle humour. Cheers.
I never really knew why California had such strict emissions regulations. Always assumed it was touristy/EPA/ScrewYouCarPeople kind of thing. Didn't think it was because smog was crippling people on the daily basis.
Same now I'm really glad my car has a cat.
We deal with the temperature inversion in Las Vegas. Being surrounded 100% by mountains on our edges it really holds the smog in. If you take a drive up the side of Sunrise/Frenchman's in NE Las Vegas you'll see a brown ring just sitting over the city
YOU MEAN COMMIEFORNIA !
/sarcasm
That is a pretty dumb assumption, just saying.
As a Japanese and a former native of Tokyo, I actually had bronchitis when I lived there in the 90s (when air pollution finally started to improve). And there was a lawsuit that lasted between 1996 and 2007 as well for the most of chronic cases, laid against the Metropolitan/National Governments, The Metropolitan Expressway Public Corporation (now since privatized), and car manufacturers including Toyota, Nissan, etc. So, yeah, it's not a California-specific problem either.
Making my Monday’s better every week!
This was the best wheel house to date!
We're getting this in the Salt Lake Valley really bad right now, I wake up to a red sun every morning and the legislation is still so focused on alcohol and porn being an issue that they haven't done anything about this
sgtwylde1996 well, those are the Mormons top priorities. Even though they fuck and reproduce like jackrabbits. Btw, only sober fucking
Unfortunately, I'm well aware lol
sgtwylde1996 that isn't smog, it's fire smoke from California.
That's smoke from wildfires all over the Western US, not smog from cars or industry. A serious issue all the way around, but requires a different approach to deal with. Climate change is a big factor, causing hotter, drier conditions in the western US, making fires harder to control. No matter what we do, even if we stop emitting CO2, it's going to keep getting worse the next several years. While the Utah Mormons might try to regulate stupid things, there probably isn't much they can do about this. Possibly increase funding for firefighting efforts, but that's about it.
Smog emissions are a real issue for some locations. Only a handful of states actually require annual/biannual emissions testing, and for those that do most of them only test for the metropolitan areas. Most of these states only require OBD2 testing making anything pre-96 exempt from regulations. I can't tell you how many people would be crying if the entire US went emissions compliant. As an Emissions Inspector in NV I still see cars fail on a regular basis, and see how many people try to trick these machines because they flat out dont wanna fix their vehicles properly.
Now I don't know how it's in most places in the US but being a Swede, been on vacation in CA (LA especially) made me really appreciate the cleaner air over here in Scandinavia.

Advancements in car tech were what really fixed the issue and not the regulations, my only nitpick. Gas guzzlers also went out cause of the fuel shortage.
okay but legit, why did the rice in the tailpipe theory not work???
Does putting your phone in rice work as well?
Yes, rice is magic
That would be too rice.
@john doe no it will not, my comment was tounge in cheek. With any electrical components, if there energized they will develop rust extremely quick, rice does absolutely nothing other then give the person some hope but it will do nothing about the water allowing the components to rust and break. The correct course of action is cut power and disassemle it immediately to remove water from the components.
Mr. Nolan! Here's a quick idea for WheelHouse: what really gave rise to manufacturers pairing such interesting names for cars over the years? Like Studebaker, or Thundercougarfalconbird?
"Dude, who turned my render distance down?"
It's just a debuff on certain parts of the map
Guess you made the wrong turn, because now you are in Silent Hill

Nolan: hopefully we'd never have to deal with dangerous gases in California ever again
Yeah, but aren't you guys dealing massive Forest fire that gives out dangerous levels of smoke at the moment?
Yeshwant Dasari yes, but Forest fires are something we can't change, unlike the effeciency of our vehicles, power sources, and food
Mustang Bullitt How are electric cars more harmful than gasoline ones? Power from a plant is immediately more efficient because of scale, and an electric motor can utilize power much more efficiently than an ICE because it's only on when required, and has no special effecient power range
why do we have to burn fossil fuels to produce them? and the amount of fossil fuels required to produce a battery would still be less than what's used in the lifetime of a petrol car.
Currently we use fossil fuels to produce electric cars, yes. But the idea is that you can eventually make the manufacturing run on electricity as well. Running cars off of gas just limits yourself to always run on gas.
@Mustang Bullitt electic cars become carbon neutral after an average of 3 years in use. After that, they're actually reducing the carbon footprint, even if your city uses coal power.
Thank you cali, for fucking it up for everyone with all your smog and stuff. If it wasn't for you guys we would be getting all the high power jdm goodness.

I'm not going to be alive long enough to see the effects of it kill so honestly I really don't give a shit what I run open headers big cams premix all day , and people say this because of they're ridiculous fucking gun laws
It's already killing people, wtf are you talking about? Heatwaves have killed hundreds already, just this year.
The only thing constant on this planet Earth is change the environment has always be changing it's not because of us
idontcare80 "heatwaves killed hundreds this year" thanks for proving my point the heat wave kill them not to smog
Except that we know why the climate changes when it changes naturally, and we know that none of the natural causes are causing the current warming.
This video was awesome. I learned a lot and stayed entertained the whole time. Thanks guys!
das auto.
sorry i just couldn't resist
I'm a car guy, but I think built up cities would be much better if many more people rode their bikes. Cleaner air, less congestion for people who actually need their cars, vans or trucks for work. I ride to uni, you save money, get fit and going 30mph feels extremely fast. I love driving on a country road but flying down the road on my bike overtaking miserable people stuck in traffic is better than driving on a 80kph road at a standstill.(which I had to do this morning). Ride your bike during the week, hit the B roads on the weekend!
Unfortunately, due to horrible urban sprawl many people work farther than perhaps they'd find practical to bike on a regular basis. Many people literally drive 50+ miles and back to work each day. Not to mention the country's mass-transit systems are terribly underdeveloped in many areas, which combined with the sprawl makes cars a necessity for getting anywhere.
Good video. Until you mentioned electric cars (they won't save the world)...

Has anyone sent this to Trump yet?
Refisol He'd only watch this if it was on Fox News, and maybe not even then.
Environmental protections are not his bag because they "stifle" businesses 😠
He's not rolling back anything that is already in place. He's only limiting new regulations.
Go buy a model 3 or a volt, leaf, prius, insight. Those electric and hybrid cars need strong batteries though and much larger equipment is used to mine it, ship it and construct it.
Most diagnostic failures on cars today are their EVAP modules, EGR valves and PCV system and they cost owners billions every year in repairs. Obviously these things aee needed, we all deserve clean air but Trump aint the cause of all your issues and this limitation of government regulation is hardly going to be noticeable with the rate that we are increasing thermal efficiency in 4cycle engines... approaching 60% in desiel ignited petrol engines and 45% in mazdas new skyactiv. A HUGE jump in efficiency from our parents 2000 civic wich at the time had a TE of around 25-30%.
TLDR; vehicles are becoming so efficient now that less new regulation of pollutents are needed.

Carmelo The Goat I think your wrong about their is still time.
We should take all the smog on Earth
And push it somewhere else 🌎
Good effort, Nolan.
Like with your catalytic converter episode, I'm so glad to see car guys worried about and thinking about these things. Car guy attitudes so often tend to be performance at any cost, and emissions are last priority, not their problem. It's everyone's problem, we may love our cars but we need to be responsible with them, otherwise people die - literally. That probably makes me a hypocrite though, as I drive a classic VW bug with basically no emissions controls (it does have the positive crankcase ventilation though). As I've converted it to fuel injection I've pondered if I could install a catalytic converter and make it work right to clean up the exhaust - not legally required, wouldn't help performance, would be a challenging and expensive mod - but it's the right thing to do.
Quill Maurer you'd be wasting time and money to limit what the earth naturally emits. How is that beneficial?
Sub 2 me or I'll call the cops the Earth doesn't naturally emit this shit... what are you on?
You mean the catalytic converter on the Bug? He just talked about what cars emit, you'd be hard pressed to find a substantial natural source of those chemicals. If the Earth naturally emits these things, then why would all these environmental efforts over the past 50 years have made such a huge difference? I live in Denver, one of the cities notorious for smog historically having this inversion air trap issue he describe (even mentioned Denver), was known as the "Brown Cloud City." Still happens a little bit, but nothing like in past decades.
I think he's on Fox News and other Conservative media. And on top of that he's probably confusing smog-producing chemicals discussed in this video with CO2 which causes climate change, a somewhat different problem in scope (long term and global rather than short term and local), which much of the Conservative media claims is the result of natural processes rather than humans - so they can justify not doing anything about it.
@@quillmaurer6563 Don't you know all these anti-pollution measures are just a fake liberal conspiracy to prevent Americans from breathing in delicious, vanilla-flavored smog? That yellow London smog was lemon flavor, but of course the EU would never allow that info to get out, why do you think Brexit happened? IT'S SO PEOPLE COULD KNOW THE TRUTH. Liberals want to turn people into soulless cattle that they can enslave for their one-world government, why do you think they want to ban fun?
I learned so much more from the TRUTH SEEKERS on the internet than I did in school. I mean, I skipped most days...well, almost every day, but I'd never let 'em brainwash ME!

Great collab you both are great!
I asked my grandma a few weeks ago what she did with her coal fire places and why she changed them to gas. She told me about the smog incident in 1952 and how she had to cling to a railing to find her way down the road from work, it wasnt just London it was pretty much everywhere in england. Anyway she said a clean air act was put in 1956 (smokeless fuel act) and so people converted their coal and wood fires to gas. shes 96 today.
