What Happens When Gas Runs Out

  • The 1973 gas crisis didn’t just mean prices at the pump spiked. It meant a sea change in how Americans thought about their relationship with cars, and how U.S. auto manufacturers designed them. Luxury and V-8 dominance had been the signifiers of car culture for a generation, but suddenly, fuel-sipping economy and the nimble joys of compact imports had changed the game. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the old dogs of Detroit didn’t exactly knock their first experiments in competing out of the gate.

During the 1973 gas crisis, I was and worked at a gas station. Unlike most of the gas stations in the area, we had gas. We were receiving 9000 gallons per day and had a line 1/4 long. My best friend was shift manager. He designated one island for fleet vehicles and took kick-backs from the fleet owners. I worked the island and got a dollar of 2 tip from every driver. For a brief period I was making more money than my father.

Make it rwd, coupe, and give it the ecoboost (which I’m not a fan of but still) and make it a cheaper mustang basically and have it compete win the BRZ and Toyota 86 category. There’s barely any competition in that sector and nothing from the Americans. I think they’d sell well enough. Those cars were a huge hit and sell really well according to how short of time they spend on the lots, even used lots they sell very very fast.

It’s probably because it costs less to make. It’s why the British flogged to diesel. After being in the petroleum industry for the last 30 yrs. I can tell you that we have oil wells
producing 10,000 barrels a day. We have leases that have not been explored yet. But with this Administration
has caused all the delays. This Administration shutdown anymore development in natural gas and oil wells.
Where do you think the products come from mining those resources? We need heavy equipment running on
diesel and gas to get those products to make those batteries? California had also proposed not plugging in your
vehicles because the demand is great. The power grid is slowing down. We have resources for next 140 yrs in the
ground by that time will have an alternative to power and energy.

      Underrated comment.
People need to free themselves from being such slaves to the pump. Alternatives are plentiful. Some people cover their ears and put the blinders on, choosing to stay stuck and susceptible to the direct effects of oil dependency.
Much like a drug, the dealer controls you and can raise the prices based on your dependency. And some people continue choose to keep killing themselves over this dependency. It’s not the dark ages. They have choices, but complain and blame others about the choices THEY made and continue to make.

in 1972 i was making $1.25 an hour at mcdonalds. gas was .25 cents a gallon i could go most of the week for 75cents on my motorcycle. i thought 14 dollars to fill up my mercury land yacht was a lot. now 70 dollars to fill up my car seems unreal. after 1973 muscle cars and land yachts were cheap. i still have a muscle car i bought back then, 1969 mustang fast back for 500 dollars. life was good. you could get a nice land yacht for 100 dollars. life was good

    • @jamesjprojects9797

That's why in Europe we use diesels sedans and have smaller engines. In the USA most of the cars are like 3.7 V6's and most of them are gasoline powered engines, so... Yeah. Not to mention the diesel engines of the Semis are worse than the European lorries since they still use diesel V8's instead of Inline 6 engines. So yeah, I think it's the good time to bring the real diesel to America.
