Probably needed the stability of a regular job. Plus im assuming he's got a good paying job given how long hes been on BA. You just have to have a different mindset esp when you've got a family to feed esp during a pandemic.
I just want to leave this here, the cast was never the root of the problem, it was BA and Conde Nast. The cast might have some say on certain things but they were never the ones deciding on anything.
@@yungjoemighty879 Actually, im not, just watched the first 2 minutes cos i saw a comment that said he addressed the issue in a way. Im just lingering to see the comments.
@yungjoemighty unfortunately it's a double edged sword. Watching videos with Chris in them is supporting conde nast but by watching this video you are also supporting Chris who isn't the problem that is conde nast.
Yeah but many of the white superior staff played a huge role in the disparities happening at ba both in the test kitchen and on the videos including pay and overall treatment. Chris’s silence (and later brad’s) have spoken volumes about their priorities. As a former fan I’m so so disappointed in Chris’s lack of solidarity and active role in glossing over ba’s unfair treatment of bipoc employees.
@@laurengottlieb6354 I do have to agree with this tho, compared to the other cast members, they were relatively silent. Both have actually spoken out, Chris said more than Brad did (which was disappointing because it was lack-luster), not that it made it any better. I do, in a way, understand their reason for staying on video, they do have young children and video appearance is added income for both. Understanding their possible reasons for staying doesn't mean I'm not disappointed. I'm just pointing out that the ultimate culprit for the oppression at BA and Conde Nast is top management. They are the ones who can change the system and if they don't, nothing will happen. Let's just hope that despite this, Chris and everyone else continues to fight for change.
also, not to hate on Chris, but wasnt the most popular person in the kitchen so it would be a lot harder to for him to leave compared to someone like claire who is probably getting tons of offers and tons of money to join another company
I'm kind of sorry for Chris. I don't remember him sounding so defeated in past videos. He sounds like he thought hard about what to do, and didn't really figure it out yet.
Life is messy and complicated, and choices are rarely clear or obvious. I hope Chris's choices are good ones for him and his family. I'm happy to see him, regardless.
Yes, then I read that he said something about the 'hiatus' (cof cof) and I watched the beginning of the video, to see what he had to saw, which was not much.
Chris addresses the issue better and more sincerely in the first 2 minutes of this video than the disingenuous 7-minute band-aid released earlier today 👀 Not blaming the new staff members, just disappointed that the comeback video had the air of "Racism, what racism? Look, we hired 3 PoC."
Exactly! I'm also disappointed that Conde Nast made the POC hires talk around the changes instead of choosing a higher-up to directly address the long-standing issues.
You are so absolutely right! Not sure what the marketing and public relations team was thinking but it still amazing how out of touch they are and still continue to be.

Just a reminder: Not everyone can just up and leave a job they love and have worked so hard to get. And the issue was never with the Chefs, nor should they have to pay for it.
But if I found out my job was racially targeting people in such a harmful way: I would walk out without a second thought and here's the thing. I need my job a helluva lot more than Chris needs his. He has a certain level of fame. He will find another job if he made the right choice.

I don't see a severe problem with this really. The quoted comment has nothing to do with race, it's about hiring someone to do a job that needs doing, and having that person become solid at doing that job, and not having to hire a new person every 3 months. I would like to hear Chris's side of this.
I think this is a case of two people reading things in two different ways and it really does matter that the intent is. When I first saw that comment in isolation I read it as though they didn't want to hire someone as over qualified as sohla clearly was for that role as they would need to promote them in three months time and have to recruit again. And they wanted another diverse hire. I've seen other people take it that wanted another over-qualified bipoc person to not be paid what their worth na menial job. Here the intent is really important.

They aren't satisfied with the position and think they should be doing more and because they can do more there is the temptation to ask it of them. I used to like Sohla but I've gone off her cause she's always sniping at her former colleagues. If she's so experienced and great then why is she constantly bouncing around jobs. Her colleagues all had different skills and talents and she thinks just because she's worked in more restaurants she is better. Priya was the least trained of all of them but I found her so warm and enthusiastic she's the only one of them I attempted a recipe whereas Sohla was stiff and a bit brittle to watch
I hope she makes her own videos.. even though I doubt she will. She could do something simmilar on her own. The Try Guys did. I don't know what copyrights BA has on "gourmet makes" but Claire could easily call it "will it Gourmet?" Or whatever else. She also just got married.. and is releasing a book. She has a lot on her plate and while I would love her to post her own videos - I doubt she is currently up for the task of doing that on her own.
I'm kind of okay with that, I feel like they were practically torturing her as time went on. She seemed so frustrated rather than inspired/having fun. I loved the beginning episodes where she was enjoying elevating snack foods, by the end it turned into "Hey Claire you need to perfectly recreate something that's only possible on a factory line, bye!"
@@ihatechemistryyy Conde Nast, the problem was with the company that owns Bon Appetit. Well still is, since they won't do the right thing but will throw tons of money the wrong way.
Editing also to blame - most the video had no ambient music during cooking . Chris looked like he misses his kids or has been crying all night . I don’t like to assume tho so I hope he’s okay and everything’s okay
I'm not optimistic. A lot of the creative force behind both the ideas and styles of the videos many of us liked are gone now, and the creative momentum they had earlier in the year is mostly gone now. Priya, Sohla, Rick (and possibly some others) will not appear in videos anymore. Claire has entirely left BA for good. Hunzi as well, and he was a major driver of the zany fun style of lots of videos, and of course often the actual editor. In this video alone you can tell the energy and spirit of the previous videos is almost entirely gone. Chris, Carla, Molly, and the few others who are left can't carry it all alone. BA failed completely to address this issue the right way. Nothing that we saw on screen was problematic, except maybe Adam. Their correct recourse should have been to transparently address the inequities in pay/seniority/whatever needed to be done behind the scenes, and preserve everything onscreen exactly as it was.
Gaby is staying as test kitchen manager but she won’t be appearing in videos. It seemed to me that she was completely out of all the drama, but was forced into a negotiation to appear on videos that she didn’t take to avoid issues. When she announced that on Instagram, I understood that the way Sohla did things might have not been fair to some cast members that had nothing to do with this payments issues.

Hiring someone overqualified who wants to leverage into a higher position is a problem. While you have another great person on staff you have an additional person on payroll and an essential role left empty. Sohla accepted the position and wage initially, was unhappy with the increases offered her, and when she didn’t receive the wages she felt she was worth... she left. Perfectly acceptable, it’s just business. While this issue is larger and more complex, culturally we seem to happy with roasting a corporation in effigy without scrutinizing all the elements. I loved Chris, even loved this video, but after reading that vulture article I'm beyond disappointed. I knew the situation at BA was bad, but really Chris you were involved? And wanting to hire a "token black person" for an entry level position, but requiring them to have years of experience? Even though most of your non BIPOC chefs have little to no experience... That's messed up. You were one of my faves.
It's truly crazy to me that companies that are forced to diversity hire instead of allowing it to naturally occur are the ones getting the flack for it now. Go woke, go broke!
All the BIPOC staff (and others) quit because no meaningful changes were being made. As a white man Chris was on a hugely lucrative contract so presumably has decided to go with money over principles.
@@thethingthatshouldnotbe7221 I'll tell you why, even though it should be of common sense: because it's absolutely ridiculous to prejudge and neglect people by their skin color or nationality. Just because you are not white, you have less resources, less job opportunities, not allowed to have education, medical insurance, the right to vote, and you get arrested with extreme violence!! Just. Because. You're not. White. Let that sink in and you tell me why is not a good thing at all.
@@thethingthatshouldnotbe7221 Well great that you want to educate yourself. I respect that. The thing with racism against black people specifically is that it’s a construct of white people, created around the 17th and 18th century, where the white people decided they are of more value, so they could enslave people of darker skintones. That thought is still present. The ideal beauty standard is someone with light skin, blue eyes, blonde hair. Anything different and you‘re automatically less than. Of course there are the big things, that are not acceptable anymore, but racism itself is more than calling someone any racial slur. In BAs case they paid people of different races less. So you have white privilege: white creators got paid more, not because of there experience, but solely because of there „marketable“ white skin, names etc. Then you have microaggressions. For example me getting asked, is I can’t marry a white dude, because people are too lazy to learn how to pronounce my name. All wrapped in a joke, but still hurtful. All in all it is a system which degrades, undermines and hurts people who point blank just look different. So I want to ask you: what is good about it?
IMAGINE hating on chris in the slightest bro. the problem with BA was never the hosts. No one ever had a problem with chris or brad or claire because they weren't the ones underpaying POC. The rich white team members didn’t give a crap about the BIPOC staff until they went public with the discrimination. Up until then, Claire l, Chris, Brad etc were quite happy to take the huge amounts they were paid for each and every video. And even then, Chris was incredible lukewarm in standing up for his colleagues. No surprise he’s the first to take the dirty money. Screw them.
@@Zveebo ah yes, those millions of dollars they were taking for every 5 seconds they were on camera, which you know about because you’ve seen their paycheques and know what everyone was making... and of course all the white folks were omniscient to the point of knowing what everyone else was being paid too because wage is such a common thing to talk about... Or maybe you’re just projecting the image you want them to have onto them because you don’t want to like them
Hosting the first video for BA to come back after what happened? Man. That must suck. I understand why anyone wouldn't want to leave a good-paying job in these times. I also understand that, after everything, one may look at the changes and think that the brand is moving in the right direction and choose to stay onboard to see the changes through. In any case, I hope this is a good sign for what's to come, even if Chris looks battered and shaken to be in front of the camera again.

My father died in July, and the BA videos combined my two favorite things... comedy and food. @@laurengottlieb6354 I do have to agree with this tho, compared to the other cast members, they were relatively silent. I do, in a way, understand their reason for staying on video, they do have young children and video appearance is added income for both.
@@thethingthatshouldnotbe7221
Well great that you want to educate yourself.

In any case, I hope this is a good sign for what's to come, even if Chris looks battered and shaken to be in front of the camera again.
“And Chris Morocco [the director of the Test Kitchen] directly told me he didn’t like how quickly I moved up, so he wanted to make sure this person would never be allowed to develop recipes.” - Sohla
Lots of others have already said everything in the comments that I agree with so I'll say just one thing.
I have missed Chris and the Morocco strong opinions (snark)! I'm glad to see him.
What about Chris owning up to him not hiring certain people because he didn't want "another Sohla problem"?
He's right for doing so. All those certain types of people do is whine.
yea, they cause huge problems then play the race card anyway. best to avoid. they are doing it to themselves.
Shola deserved to get paid fairly and express her concerns. But I agree that the way she did it selfish and put a lot of other members of the cast in a weird position.
@@lauramipe2955 what exactly did she do that was selfish I'm genuinely asking bc ppl are hella annoying these days
Laura MiPe she was selfish for speaking up for herself? Ok.
I'm just so happy to see Chris. Sometimes during Covid its nice to see some familiarity. And I believe they will make positive changes, there's always growing pains.
My father died in July, and the BA videos combined my two favorite things... comedy and food. Those videos got me through so much over quarantine in the spring (when I first stumbled upon BA) and my father’s death this summer. I’m so happy to see Chris back but I miss the old crew so much.
It’s like my favorite sitcom was recasted and it just doesn’t feel the same 😢.
Agreed. And though I know it doesn’t count for much, I’m really sorry, and my heart is with you. ❤️
"the goal is to make a very homogenous mixture"
Oop 👀
Very bechamel-like
hahahahaha missed that one! but this whole video lacked flavor
@@c.a.9814 Jeeez leave Chris alone. Chris has always been a good dude.
So excited to see this perspective! I do 80% of this recipe. The wet mix before adding beef, can’t wait to try. Weeknight better option is sear the meatballs then pour good sauce over and bring up temperature to simmer. Keeps everything in one pot.
‼️‼️‼️‼️
Everyone writing "so we're just going to ignore what happened"
THE VIDEO WAS POSTED THREE MINUTES AGO???
If you ACTUALLY watch it, you'll see that Chris does address it. Smh.
People just like to be mad and stay mad
pizza that statement in itself is so true
@@pizzadoog An overwhelming amount of people. Perpetual ignorance is just pure stupidity.
Just like how in the last video, no one bothered to read the pinned comment before getting mad
chris isn't the guy to blame for all this tho. The people behind the scenes should be speaking up and going in front of the camera instead of being like "hey look, we have POC execs finally!" and "hey look, it's chris, and meatballs, you like those, right?"
luv chris hate ba... we need more info. Three new bipoc staffers in a zoom-call doesn't impress anybody
THANK YOU,,DO YOU HAVE THE FULL STORY AT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OTHERS?
I know what POC is but what is BIPOC?
Sohla is working with Babish Culinary Universe. They have a series called Stump Sohla.
@@seofra8252 THANK YOU,BUT WHAT HAPPEN? THIS WAS GREAT AND VERY PROFITABLE FOR YT AND OTHERS,I NEVER HEARD WHOLE STORY

"While my colleagues were making less money, I upgraded to a new studio and moved to a bigger place!"
BA video uploads. *grabs popcorn and goes straight to the comment section
Trying to ease us back in with Chris huh? Okay I'll bite.
Fr. Love Mr. Morroco.
LOL i choked on my water 🤣🤣
Yes I headed straight to reading the comments but I also noticed Chris's kitchen looks different..
It’s a studio.
@@Rena-ej7vv it’s not a studio its his house
@@adeallapashtica9003 3:28 “Are you just raiding the pantry at this studio?” It’s a studio.
He says right in the beginning that they rented a studio. It's a studio.

After reading Sohla’s article in Vulture Culture, everything he says seems false and deceiving...
she's probably lying or exaggerating at least.
@@mysterymanforu Are you Chris?
even without reading the article, it seemed that way too (but now I want to go read the article)
@@abhish7622 Are you?
Everything Sohla says is the signs of a perpetual victim mentality. Good riddance.
Omg!! Welcome back! And great to see it's my fav Chris
We love you Chris, but we hate BA.
What happened?
It’s not bad but Condé Nast they r the ones who handle the video part of ba
"we"
I don't hate BA--I don't know what really happened. Neither do you.
Awesome! Missed you Chris!
“And Chris Morocco [the director of the Test Kitchen] directly told me he didn’t like how quickly I moved up, so he wanted to make sure this person would never be allowed to develop recipes.” As she puts it, management didn’t want another “Sohla problem.” (Vulture)
They somehow don't get that Sohla is the best "problem" they ever had. And now she's thriving elsewhere and they're being left behind.
Always here for Chris, never forget what BA has done, but I will watch this man make meatballs for his family all the time.
I think Chris was the absolute favorite on Bon Appetit for a lot of us. This is deeply disappointing.
Glad your back.
BA really has no soul. I guess they tricked us into believing that they did. That they cared about food and that they cared about people. But they don't. They care about money and that's it. I feel bad for the employees being used in this situation. It must feel awful being manipulated into pretending everything is fine, when everyone knows it's not.
Most of us never watched for any corporate loyalty. We just liked the on screen personalities. Screw BA, I was here for Brad's antics, Claire decent into madness reverse-engineering popular snacks, and the rest of the crew just having fun.
@@NWinnVR trueeee i never cared about BA the channel. I care about the personality of the crew members. And the viewership will go to wherever they go
Is it wrong though when people fall for that? Everything especially in this digital era is about money. And yes, that means us sitting in the other side of the monitor. If you think people who don’t know you care about you. Oh well.
“They really wanted to hire someone Black, which I know you’re not allowed to say legally, out loud,” she says. “And Chris Morocco [the director of the Test Kitchen] directly told me he didn’t like how quickly I moved up, so he wanted to make sure this person would never be allowed to develop recipes.” As she puts it, management didn’t want another “Sohla problem.”
Don't forget the part where he was involved in interviewing for a replacement for sohlas old position, and despite the (black) candidates being overqualified, said none had enough experience.
I'm happy to see Chris again. I'm not an expert on these things, I've heard BA has made some changes to upper management. It just feels a little hollow and sad knowing so many of our favorites have quit/won't be on video any more
Yippee! I am SO HAPPY to see Chris Morocco back again on BA!!! Sure, quarantine (and everything else) has made him (and us) flustered and frazzled, but that's par for the course. Hang in there, Chris, we love you!!!
Chris is in the house my day has been made :D
Yes Chris, it makes sense. My ingredients list is identical, but I feel like these techniques make a lot more sense than my normal approach. I'll be trying this soon.
“And Chris Morocco [the director of the ] directly told me he didn’t like how quickly I moved up, so he wanted to make sure this person would never be allowed to develop recipes.”
BA is back baby! so glad to see Chris (and Brad) making videos again.

I would like to say that BA and conde nast as a company were the issue, not the cast, and I'm glad that they had to come to terms for their terrible behavior and treatment of their employees. and I hope that the company has learned their lesson. BUT! I missed these videos soooo much and I was soooo happy to see a BA cooking video on my subscription page this morning!
