Fooling around with S470 and Guitar Rig 5

  • It's super late, but I find myself firing up the camera to give a quick demo of my new (used) Ibanez S470TR and some of the new patches in Guitar Rig 5. Unlike my TH2 video where all of the patches were made from scratch, this one uses the presets in the new Guitar Rig. The patches use mostly the new Soldano model, but there's a split rig that uses the UltraSound (which is based on the Bogner Ubershall).
    Now I got to get to bed!! G'nite!!

    My favorite part of playing guitar is getting a song down or even experimental songs, putting new strings on, and listening on a clean channel with LOTS of reverb. That Crystal clear, soft warm sound on the neck pickups just puts me at peace.

    You are the proud father of a bouncing baby S470. It is sweet. I have one too, I just refinished it and deciding about new pickups. I didn't get the edge zero tremolo but installed an original Floy Rose from a Charvelle Charvette, works well.

    @EL34XYZ That is correct. The signal from the mixer to and from the computer is via Tascam TDIF (their failed version of ADAT). But you're correct, I do use a small ART preamp (the cheap $29 one) to set the levels. Before I used the preamp, I couldn't get the guitar hot enough without overdriving the channel bus. The preamp allows me to get a hotter signal without the unwanted distortion. I'm preparing a video to show my rig, so that should explain it in more detail.

    @DJordydj I'm not familiar with that software, but most DAW recorders have a pass-thru or audition feature. I'm just using the stand-alone version of the software when I record most of these. When I try to run it in real-time within Sonar, I gain a little latency and lose the stereo effects, so I stick with the stand-alone versions unless I absolutely need the other tracks at the moment.

    @GingerSeansGuitar I run into a mixer, then out to the computer for the GR5 processing, then back to the mixer, and then out in stereo to the camera mic-in. That's the key to it right there, having a mic-in jack on the camera so I don't have to mic it live (which kills the tone and loses the stereo effects).

  • @SFBGuitar
    @SFBGuitar  12 лет назад

    @maulty1 Thanks!! I think it's called X-Ray Heavy. It's patch 9 or 10 in the "New in GR5" bank.

    that Balls to the Wall lick was really awesome to hear again Big Steve!! But nothing topped that Journey cover, that sounded nearly exactly the same as the studio cut!!
    How come you never play any Rush or Triumph covers/licks? I know you must know several!!!

  • @SFBGuitar
    @SFBGuitar  13 лет назад

    @rossgun1 Thanks! I'm still giving TH2 the edge for overall sound, but GR5 is a huge improvement over GR4. I think they tweaked the cab simulators and they may have even gone back to IRs for cab emulation. As you can hear, a lot of the GR stuff is very processed. Plus, GR is a little noisier and requires the gate to be a little higher (which will cut notes off sooner when letting them ring out).

  • @SFBGuitar
    @SFBGuitar  12 лет назад

    @mzsteadicam Yo! I'm not sure if the ART will improve the sound, but it certainly help me get the levels a little better. My older stuff had a weaker input signal, so the amp simulators weren't working as well. The ART allowed me to step up the gain a little bit, just enough to get the amp simulators to respond better. I also noticed that it really helped with vocals, warming the signal up and adding a touch of compression. So, I think it will make a little difference, but not a huge one.

  • @SFBGuitar
    @SFBGuitar  12 лет назад

    @EDIshames I use a Tascam PCI-822, which is long discontinued. The key is getting ASIO drivers for the hardware. If the hardware doesn't offer ASIO drivers, skip it. To get your generic PC audio to work, you can try ASIO-4-All. They can reduce latency by up to 90% on generic chips. Of course, a dedicated pro chipset is best, but in the meantime you can try ASIO4ALL (just do a Google search).

    I just got a sweet deal at GC of that exact guitar. What do you find are good basic pickup heights for the stock V1 and V2 pups? I realize you replaced these after this video but I kind of like the sound of the stock pups in this video. I scored mine for $299 with ibanez Prestige case and its a solid 8/10 super clean!

    @giosseppe Oh, and thanks for the kind words about my playing. Much appreciated. And no, I'm not using the control board, just the software. (I ran out of characters in the last response) And check out Atmosphere Git and Rocker Git patches. Pretty killer stuff.

  • @SFBGuitar
    @SFBGuitar  12 лет назад

    @mzsteadicam Oops, ran out space. Anyway, a soundcard made for guitar (with a hi-z input) may help get the signal better. I think Line6 and M-Audio both make a USB box that has a hi-z input. Just be sure they have ASIO drivers, which really help with latency and overall quality.
    That last tone is called "X-Ray Heavy" and it's in the bank of patches called "New in GR5." There's a bunch in there that are really good. I'm still with TH2 for my main amp, but GR5 is MUCH better than GR4.

  • @SFBGuitar

    @robdrums69 Absolutely. The patch is showing off the auto-pan, but it can be turned off with just a click.

  • @ArtistikVision
    @ArtistikVision 8 лет назад

    only thing I noticed is the sound of the pick scrapping the strings... it seems to stand out little bit to much on certain spots... it's not terrible and the presets sounds pretty sweet.. but I've always noticed this when running a guitar straight through a interface, it just doesn't sound as clean... Usually I mic the amps, but in essence I sacrifice alot of variables I otherwise would have used. Is there anything that can be done about that scratching noise... it's not really noticeable when you played quickly... and I just got guitar rig 5 with komplete 10 but haven't really messed around with it at all.

    Recently, I have read that some S470 models have sustain issues above the 12th fret. Ibanez made the S470 through several different revisions. The S470 was introduced in 1987; however, there were revisions for (1992-1999) and (2003-2009). The S470 was discontinued after that. My question is: Have you (or other guitarist who play the S470) experience sustain issues? If so, what model year? If they fixed the issue, what was done to fix it?

    • @jayz6008
      @jayz6008 4 года назад

      In my experience most S series guitars have sustain issues. I mean they're super thin, they're usually setup with light strings and use locking tremolos. Basically everyone of those things on their own affect sustain and when you combine them all together you have a sort of thinner tone with less sustain. Ibanez guitars are great but the S series for me had always been sort of a love hate. They look great , are comfortable but their tones always sort of lack that oomph that thicker guitars have. Put it side by side next to ANY thick bodied mahogany guitar and the S series sounds wimpy. Steve here is using Guitar Rig 5 , I use that software daily because it sounds glorious but it can make even the worst guitar sound good. The tone here is mainly the amp and not the guitar...
      Ive owned about 4 S series all with the same thin tone and weak sustain. An s520ex, S470 with the Lotrs, S570, & the S470dxqm with the ZR. They were nice guitars but I sold them all because I wound up no being happy with their tone and they were. Very uninspiring as metal guitars... even with upgraded pickups

    I have an important question!!! If I was to purchase Guitar Rig 5 and hook it up to my computer with my Pioneer home stereo tower speakers ( 160watt/8 ohm) will I get the same sound? Or am I missing something in the equation of sound here? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I am in the process of gettng an 2015 RG655 Ibanez and I would like to get a nice Satriani sound if I could! Just wondering how I can purchase the right equipment without breaking the bank! The guitar is going to be costly enough...lol. P.S. I presently own an M Audio Fast Track Interface, not sure how great that is. Your sound is truly amazing......if you could let me know how you get your sound I would be forever indebted to you!

    What kind of interface are you using to connect your guitar to the computer? or is it straight a simple jack connector to the blue line in??

    • @SFBGuitar
      @SFBGuitar  10 лет назад +3

      I run through a Tascam digital mixer and it's matching PCI soundcard. They were both discontinued back in 2002. Check my video called "My Rig" that goes into more detail (though I don't use the tube preamp any longer - it burned out and I never replaced it). You can't use the internal audio of most PCs, it's just not powerful enough and the preamps aren't meant for hi-z (guitar signal). I have another video that goes over how to set up a PC with the correct audio interface.

    for 2 guitars and 1 bass, i use an m-audio fast track interface. im running 3-4 instances of GR5. guitars go into a Marshall 50-50 tube power amp, into two 4x12 cabs (Orange & Randall). bass goes to a crown power amp then into an Ampeg 6x10. obviously disable cab sims in GR5.
    its running at 128 samples, so less than 10ms latency. im using FCB 1010 MIDI controllers for switching presets/stomps (getting UnO chips in the mail).
    been jamming weekly for a year, havent had a single crash. ever.

    No EQ or mixing. This is live straight to the camera. I'm using an old Tascam rig, a TM-D1000 mixer with a PCI-822 card in the PC. See the video "My Rig" for more details, though I don't use the ART preamp any longer. The tube burned out and I was just too lazy to replace it, so I've been running directly into the board for about a year now.

    @giosseppe I'm running into an ART tube preamp ($29) and then into an old Tascam digital mixer, it then goes to the computer via digital cable, back to the mixer via stereo digital, and then output in stereo to the camera's mic input. Does your soundcard have a hi-z input? ASIO? Like a POD Studio or something like that? The basic card that comes in a PC usually sucks for audio. The ones made just for guitar sound a lot better. Even the M-Audio one for $79 is better than stock audio.

    Ok, I just got an S370RRF ( yes a 370, they made an S370 in 2001, 2002 that was made in Korea ) they called them the S470 after that; for $40.28 with a case out of pocket after some trading in some gear I wasn't using anymore at a local musicgoround. I just wanted to say, after looking for more than a year, this is a great guitar. I can't see why you don't play this thing ALL the time! If I can get a GK pickup cleanly mounted in this thing, it will replace my Yamaha as my "go to" guitar!

  • @SFBGuitar
    @SFBGuitar  12 лет назад

    @GingerSeansGuitar It's the webcam that's the problem -- it can't get the direct audio. Get a separate pocketcam that has a line-in jack. Kodak makes one for around $150. Then use the laptop as the "amp" and the pocketcam as the recorder. Trying to use the computer as both the video recorder and the amp will be difficult, if not impossible.

There's some clean ones that are much better than anything in GR4. I think they redesigned the cab emulation and that made all the difference. The old ones were harsh, but the new ones are, like you say, smooooooth. :)

    I am thinking about buying Guitar Rig 5 instead of Positive Grid Bias. What I'm wondering is since Positive grid/bias has an optional Bias Head amp which I don't know the purpose of it yet do I need a similar head amp for Guitar Rig 5 or does they make one to match it?

    @Renots024Young HA! Thanks! Yup, you'll need a PC to run GR5 (and a decent audio interface for the PC).

    Have you ever kept a SZ series Ibanez. I bought one about 3 days ago and its great. Its a Ibanez/Duncan joint venture on the pickups. Not demonic but good and solid to hold down any style of music. I like them. But, in your opinion.....are the Pearly Gates pickips more impressive.......It would be great to hear about what you consider and why a particular builder of pickups that hold your fort secure. With all the tone you drive through your G5 system. I m amazed you don't have a system of pickups for each style of guitar. Your guitars sounds great.

    @IncorpMusic Yes, but only if it is supported by ASIO-4-All. Without ASIO drivers, the latency delay will make it unplayable. With ASIO, you should be able to get the latency down to workable levels. If the onboard audio isn't supported by ASIO4ALL, then you'll need to get a different audio interface. DirectX simply isn't designed for real-time audio processing.

    @satchbooggy Agreed! They just scored a pretty decent '90 RG760 in black with hsc and they want under 400 for it. That's been on my mind a bit, to say the least. I'm still searching for a decent Kramer for short money, but it's harder to find. GR5 is a definitely improvement over GR4. I'm still wading through the patches and I'm liking what I'm hearing.

    Hi.
    Does anyone know if there is any pedal that can give you that much (or at least almost) reverb?

    Thanks for the quick reply. That splains that
    My signal path is
    Guitar-Hand made Stereo Tube preamp- MAudio Fast track utlra in Stereo-Computer/GR-MAudio Fast track utlra-Power amp-stereo speakers.
    The whole path is Stereo except the guitar itself.
    My video recordings suck cause I am recording the room sound from the speakers and backing track.
    Have to try your method of going direct into the camera.
    Check out my channel for some older Gr stuff I did a few years ago. See ya
