you were human all along humans are just cruel.
Re the question of humanity....there is the frustration we see at being a purpose-built slave.
But beyond this, there is an interesting philosophical aspect. Is it the potential that confers Humanity, or the exercise?
The singer was basically living in a womb (ship), untouched by change or choice. Then gained experience and knowledge.
Finally, he came to the point of asking about his own existence -- some would say this inquiry is the start of true human life.
*Disclaimer* -- I have not read any of these books. Only replying to the previous poster based on what I heard in the song.
Jim - the azi singing this, was literally on a ship, though I think your womb point is spot-on.
This is a counterpart song to Serpent's Edge, as evidenced by these lyrics:
Serpent's Edge:
I've thrown the wands too often, played too many games of sej,
And hoped you thought I gambled for a lark.
You've won the ships, you've won the stars, you think you've all the edge,
But now at last we're passing for the dark.
Tapes:
I gambled for your offer, never thinking I could choose
The game for you diversion, my life if I should lose
Your winning took my contract, and with it came my soul
Serpent's Edge is one of my all time favorite songs! It has a such a richness of background, and while I am not studied enough to know why I do find the music and arrangement to be very engaging.
Do you perchance know which book this song is about?
Serpents Reach. One of the wonderful alliance-union novels by C. J. Cherryh: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serpent%27s_Reach
Those books shaped me more than I can describe today.
@@ArneBab I once read a comment by a woman who said that while walking with her sister one day she finally realized that every action she took was the result of a choice she made, and that she had never really understood that before. She had become self-aware at the age of forty.
Is this song on Spotify? I want to listen to it more!
Does anyone know who this singer is?
(Even if you see this comment years after I've made it please reply I really want to know)!
according to Fanlore's article on this album, it's Dominic Bridwell
@@Sixthhokage95 Thank you so much!
I’m pretty sure this is what inspired grunt in mass effect 2
If it did, that'd be an awesome detail.
More likely though, his character arc was meant as a 'Nature vs Nurture' exercise.
He's got quite a compelling arc all the same, even if a lot of people reduce it down to 'He's Shepard's adoptive son.'
What is Human? Even Enki that planned our species, cannot answer that.
If a genius of a god does not know, how would we ? We're just making it up as we go brother.
"the programming that made you real, taught me right from wrong"
since the azi are taught off tapes, is the narrator getting total recalled?
