I have one of her earlier instruments, done around 2017, it's outstanding. I didn't know her last name, just her first name. It's very close to an actual late-50's era in neck feel, or heft, built from old wood, with a nitro finish. It took about 6-7 weeks to get, there is no fake serial number or "made in USA" on it, It rings, and it's loud when it's unplugged, like it's supposed to.
Hi Mattias how do you contact Cathy as it looks like she did a great job on your guitar keep the good work up, her doing a company build is a great idea Regards John
What an amazing build! I got my first Cathy guitar over a month ago, had to do some minor work but overall it's pretty good, I'd definitely get another from her. I heard all CTS pots are made in Taiwan nowadays and you can get imperial and metric sized ones (Epiphone uses the metric ones on their fancy LPs nowadays, I believe the only real difference is the splines on the shaft). What a great build. Cathy is building me a 57 gold top with quite similar specs. This video prompted me to ask her to direct-mount the bridge studs for mine. She told me that the neck and body just got glued, so I hope this request was made in time. Thanks, Mattais!
@@ericbitzer5247 I did. It was unfortunately riddled with problems. It looked nice but the neck was not glued in flush. Took it to a luthier to hav him fix a misaligned bridge. Great video, quality content! 👍Do you know where the guitar was stuck? I have a guitar on the way that has been sitting in Shanghai airport and waiting for a plane for 25 days now.
Thanks man! My guitar were stuck in china. That seems to be the issue. Once it is shipped from there it usually runs pretty smooth. Good luck, I hope it works out!
I think the tonal separation in both pickups is fantastic. Really impressive binding work. The routing was spot on. I don't like what Gibson is putting out nowadays. Questionable craftsmanship and prices that are really kind of a joke. Thanks Mattias ! !
I bought a 57 futura Chibson copy recently, cause they’re terribly hard to find and are very expensive, and it’s honestly a great guitar. Definitely worth the money… but honestly, I wouldn’t get a Chibson unless it’s a really hard model to find. It’s a player, very slinky and the fret work was better than the last 3 Epiphones I bought. Ebony board has some glue on it but the board is really nice overall. Neck profile is a chunky slim taper feel and is a little narrow compared to my Gibson explorer. Honestly it’s a great guitar, I was shocked. I was expecting to make it a decorative wall hanger but now it’s in the line up with my other guitars.
That’s great man! You are describing an experience many of us have had. We want a nice wall hanger but once we get it they play and feel so nice that we have to play it 🤘🎸
Very nice! I own 3 real Gibson's 1-1983 les paul custom, 1-2011 les paul classic custom, 1-2011 50s les paul. I have a Chibson les paul custom that is absolutely great after I change all hardware and pickups! Thanks 🤘
Yea, I have 4 Gibsons. They are my favourite guitars, all of them plays absolutly amazing. Chibsons can be great to, but you must be ready to do some customization yourself. If you do that, then you can have a guitar that rivals the big brand!
@@TheworldofMattiasI actually like the tops a little plainer. I love the triple A too and it looks cool and I would have one. Just my own preference is a top more like yours.
Wow.. i am really not a super-fan of chibsons.. but man, I think you got a really really good guitar right there, its not even my guitar but I still feel a little happy for you because of how good the guitar seems. I would have to think that it´s similar to an Epiphone Les Paul at least ?

I read in many FB groups that P4M and "Cathy" lowered their quality a lot after gaining recognition. I have no way to confirm this but it's just another question to second-guess where to buy one of these guitars.
I have had good and bad ones from Cathy. In my experience Cathy makes great LP guitars and acoustics. The 345 I bought from her played well but the finish on it was terrible! I don’t know if their over all quality have droppen but every business can suffer from increeced volumes. If so, I hope they get back on track soon!
@@TheworldofMattias good to hear! I think these guitars are a few short years or less away from becoming incredibly consistent and of even better quality. I'm looking to pick up an ebony lp custom and perhaps also a j-45 clone when the time is right for me.
@@agentofkariosd1116 that is a good plan. Go for the really high end guitars. In my experience, the strats and teles are quite cheap to buy secondhand so there is no real point of getting a Chinese version.
if i may throw in my 2 cents here....if you guys really want a les paul that looks like a les paul, has the right tone and volume knob placements, the correct pickups rings for a gibson and not epiphone sized...then i seriously reccomend any of the japanese tokai, burny, greco les pauls used or new. I have a tokai love rock with whole lotta humbuckers by seymour duncan , jimmy page wiring harness, goto fittings , all for 600 pounds sterling, used obviously....but it actualy plays like a gibson. i had a chibson same as this (sold it for 200 notes) , except mine had fret nibs ....not a patch on epiphone (the mid priced ones and above) or any of the other "law suit" style copies. im also a player and not just some dude buying all the time....good deals out there if you look. however 600 notes for this chibby is way too steep imho , it doesnt even have fret nibs at that price either...bit weird...why go to the lengths to buy a les paul that has the gibson logo , but everything else gives it away as a poor copy. i get that cathy makes the guitars in her factory (and for P4M obviously ect...they all know each other) and has a new group ect...but these prices are insane. the latest one i bought from P4M/badcat apparently was almost 600 notes too, but it was dressed up in some dodgy backdoor link to the bad cat website that had a 40% off sale on. so i paid just over £300....still waiting on that guitar to actually arrive. i guess what im saying is, if your interested in buying a chibson , really do your homework before doing so, ask for real actual pictures of the actual guitar you will recieve too before buying.
@@TheworldofMattias if you havent tried a tokai or any of the Jap copies like burny/fernandez,greco,...even orvilles can be picked up cheap (and they are authentic gibsons made in japan) , i honestly think you would love them, the build qualitys are superb
I´m very interested in the Orville´s. But here in Sweden the market are much smaller than in the US so I have to wait until the right oppertunity comes. :)
Couldn't agree with this more. These knockoffs look "off" and "cheap". I have a Custom Shop R8 and SG Special, and they kick butt. I also have an affection for 70's lawsuit models, and love the Burny and Greco stuff. They go toe to toe with almost any Gibson I've played.
Did you ever get your P4m guitar? Laughed at your back door 40% off comment because I was just there. Did the guitar make it your way and if so, did it play well? -P
Great job on the customization, but this thing looks way off, right out of that shipping box. Someone below had suggested the fantastic 70's lawsuit models by Greco, Burny, Tokai, etc. Those brands made incredible re-creations. Billy Gibbons, Joe Walsh, and SRV even had their own model Tokai. You can get those for a fraction, and they've got mojo all day long, though their price is slowly climbing.
Yes, I agree the lawsuit guitars are very good. I think, and hope, that some of the chibsons can rise to that level of claim in maybe 20 years time. But you are right, the Grecos are absolutly worth considering!
Thank you! Yes, you have to pay upfront. She is building guitars order to order. She has group builds though, those guitars are ready to be shipped at once and you can get a picture of them before ordering.
Group builds are what she does to keep the costs down. Her followers on FB or Discord chose which guitars she do a run of and she makes a small batch of those.
I ordered LP from Chatty it was an absolutely disgusting communication, I ordered ABR-1 they set Nashville bridge, I sent them frets -they lost it . Then I made my own research . Chatty doesn’t make these guitars. It’s nothing different then every Chinese chib you can buy for half price of chatty s price from AliExpress.
Yea, you´re right, Cathy doesn´t build the guitars her self. But, she really shines when you custom order a guitar. In my experiance she will go to great leangth to satisfy your wishes. But, with that said, anything can happen and then the cummunication is really important. It´s a bummer that that didn´t go well for you.
I would buy that myself for 6 hundred the way it's built and way you speced it. I was lucky and bought my Gibson Les Paul custom SG three Tim Shaw pickups gold hardware in 1989 for the 86 for $550. She aged very well too. I been wanting a 59 burst copy. I would love to have a real R9 Gibson, but can't afford that right now.
Congrats on you SG, I would really love to have that guitar! If you are interested in a burst like mine please contact me on FB and I will help you out!
@@TheworldofMattias I don't have FB, but I am interested in a burst like yous. I never went on Facebook because I don't like Zuckerberg and how they collected data.
I think ì might be too late for the Cathy guitar party. I looked at as many videos as I could find and looked for the most recent comments and there were many people complaining complaining they didn't get what they paid extra for. I think all the positive videos made her swamped with orders and because of that, she has other people building guitars for her in order to fill the orders. I'm worried about placing an order now. You're lucky you got a good one while the getting was good. That really is a sweet Les Paul copy you got.
@@TheworldofMattias I certainly appreciate that. Like I said earlier though I think she's swamped with orders and have others building them now. I got a response from the guy who ordered a goldtop and he was disappointed. I'm not ready to gamble at this point, but I really do appreciate the offer to get ahold of her.
I would do three different requests to match a Reissue spec. First the binding on fingerboard and body, I would swap them. Thicker on the body, thinner on the fingerboard. Second, I would also request narrow and tall humbucker rings. The third would be an ABR style bridge, not Nashville. Would match almost 90% the visual of a R8.
Yep, you are right! It´s hared to get it exactly right. It has taken Gibson 35 years to come to the point they are now with their reissues and they still doesn´t match 100%. :)
I’ve been watching for a while and you’re quite good at setting up guitars. I found your nitro over poly video so entertaining. I’d love to see your talents work on lesser known, mid range guitars than all these 3rd shift epiphones / gib copies. Or have a batch made with your own custom headstock
@@TheworldofMattias of course I will watch. I have nothing but respect for your work and appreciate your honesty when doing reviews. I find you are similar to scar my guitar in that you started by improving other builder’s work. They now make their own guitars. I can see you going down that path. Design something, have someone build them and you set them up and ship them out. I’d also like to see you get your hands on a Gib, a Chib and an Amazon guitar like a LeoJamez. Set each up and correct mistakes. Tabulate all of the costs and then do an honest shoot out and review. I’d watch that series especially if you do it with lots of brands.
i sold off my Gibsons, Epiphones, and a Mexican fender and bought 4 Chibsons with the proceeds--and I still have enough money to buy a couple more Chibsons.
I have built guitars I have painted guitars I have done it all and I still don't understand how you can build a Chibson so cheap and some have very good quality built into them.
The knobs look a bit high, compared to the real thing other wise looks pretty good, drop in some good pickups and maybe new harness and you could have a nice one
@9:36 you can see the binding was masked poorly prior to painting. There's paint running up the binding. Idk about you, but this wouldn't make me a happy customer especially at a $600 dollar price.
@@TheworldofMattias Yea you could take a razor to it, give it a light score on where you want the line to stay at, then scrape off the paint. Not too big of a deal. 👍
@popeye, it dont matter!!! the 3000 dollar gibsons are full of imperfections , so would you pay 3000 for gibson imperfections or 600 for chibson imperfections, either way you still not gonna get a perfect guitar, nothing is perfect only God !
So, thats the maple boards you revealed months ago!? That has been a long project. Boy, this one attracted a few Chibson haters! Could those pickups be Artec?
Yes, it’s been a long time waiting. But this one was well worth the wait. Amazing guitar right out of the box! But you know me, I won’t stop at that. This is just the starting point for me! Haters are everywhere, you just have to live with it 😂 I don’t know about Artec, why do you think it’s that?
I got a 59 Reissue chibson my luthier installed all Gibson parts but I put some alnico pick ups, plays like butter and has faded and aged beautifully love too practice and learn on it but when I get down to business I pull out the Gibson which cost $2200 and my Chibson is $500 including Gibson case I love them equally and will never sell either one.
I’m happy for you! To own a real Gibson is a treat! I have four of them myself and I love them to death. But they are $4000, $3000, $ 1500 and $1000 each. My most expensive Chibby is a little shy of $600. I love them all, and I sell the ones I don’t like, including Gibson and fenders.
Well Phil, the used marked can be worth taking a look at, I fish there all the time. But if you want to customize a guitar (and if you are not a millionair) chibbys is the only real option.
I’ve been watching the market for a while now, @@TheworldofMattias, and you’re 100% spot on. Even in Australian $$$ they make the most sense, especially given most/the majority of Chibson’s & other newer Asian guitars are used for their husk, only.
That looks like a plain maple top and not a figured maple top. Many Gibsons have plain maple tops. I like the look of plain maple, it's usually pretty consistent. Figured maple is a crap-shoot, some look nice, some don't.
I’ll never understand satin finish Les Paul. Gimme a glossy fat biiitch anyday. But hey if people didn’t want it they wouldn’t have every manufacture doing it these days as an option
I think it’s insane that you lot are chatting so openly about ordering counterfeit goods 😂 Even possession of counterfeit goods is illegal where I’m from. 10 years inside, unlimited fine or confiscation of assets (house, car etc). Good Lord 🤦♂️
@@d.j.9961 Nah Google it. Might be different in your country/state. But in California for example, handling counterfeit goods is a crime. Or the Uk where the punishment is worse. Owning a pirate DVD - same basic principle. Stolen intellectual property
The last two I ordered from her were crap. The first, a greenie, was horribly relived, the wrong finish and the pickups were not reversed. The second one was supposed to be a high end, 500k pots, and better finish. It wasn’t. It looked rush and nothing near even Epiphone quality. There’s too many great used Schecters/sides for $500 that are so much better.
I´m sorry you got bad guitars, that is never fun. And I agree with you, the used market is a great way to get a good guitar. However, if you want a specific model or even want to custom order a unique guitar, Chibson is the only way, this side of $10000.
The Chinese factory that make the body and necks for Chibsons are Epiphone employees or ex ones , so this is why they are usually spot on. The tuners are usually the Epi ones as well.
@@TheworldofMattias it’s been documented in several places although a lot of people think otherwise because of the differences in the guitars. But they have to put differences in them for them to clear customs, otherwise they would be counterfeit. The small differences are how they “get away with it”
@@FrankCastleThePunisher666 no thats wrong. Having gibson on the guitar makes it illegal to import to any western country or to sell that guitar. And as for the epiphone guys thats just a rumor thats never been shown to be true.
No, I´m not worried. They can´t sue me couse I´m a private person and there is no law agains buying Chibsons. But with that said, I wouldn´t want to get on the wrong foot with Gibson (or Fender). I am a big fan of their guitars and since I started my YT channel showing Chibsons and what they can do I purchased 8 Gibsons and 5 Fenders so all in all I´m good business for them.
Not a fan of Cathy’s guitars. I have two that are absolutely garbage. One had the bridge so far off you can’t even get close to proper intonation. Frets popping out all over the fretboard. I don’t have issues with Chibsons but I feel like the Cathy lovefest all over RUclips is suspicious at the very least
What a bummer! You must have had poor luck. I can´t speak for all of Cathy´s guitars, just the ones I get. Did you custom order yours or were they stock guitars?
What a nice hat, Dude, or I'd rather Capt. maybe. In my opinion the glossy top with the satin look wasn't that clear request. I don't know. Namastè. 🗨😉🧢
Sorry my friend, but that was way too expensive for what you got, I have guitars from Polaris 4 Music for less than half what you paid which are at least as good as yours, also nitro laquer & the only Chibsons I have ever seen that have fret binding nibs. I also had Cathy make me a 1972 Les Paul Deluxe that was fantastic & cost me $380 delivered.
I’m happy for you, truely! But consider this. Solid maple top which I got ro chose, much better pickups, CTS pots, mop inlays and logo, long neck tenon, stainless steel frets, one piece body and neck. This is not s standard Chibby of the shelf.
@@TheworldofMattias I hear you, your the pots are full sized, but aren't CTS, mop inlays & ss frets are an upgrade, but shouldn't add very much to the cost, you can but excellent pickup sets for $70. Mediocre at best. Some good points. Some not so good. By all accounts a great person to buy from. But that guitar is below par. That said….. I totally approve of the logo on the back of the headstock. That is a really nice touch.

Well, I’m not an expert but if it is nickle then Cathy made a 100% guitar from my specs. I do think it is chrome though. I will change the hardware in a future video, I will compare them then. Side by side it should be easy to tell.
Should have been shieling paint or tape inside that crappy routing job. I think you could have done better with a higher end Epiphone. Some do come with Gibson pick ups if you look a bit. You could have bought a Gibson SG or Studio used for 700 bucks and maybe with a free hard shell case. I dunno, I did lot of research and I'm not sold. What eve3r floats your boat. Sounds ok but I'm not the one playing so no judgement there.
You can tell it's a fake in the thumbnail... selector switch wonky, and the stop tailpiece sits in line with volume control, the cutaway is also wonky - dead giveaways.
@@TheworldofMattias Looks a little "lazy" and "dolphin fin" in Chibby nomenclature... the wonky selector switch is enough to give it away anyway. And the body just looks... "off" - like an Epiphone.
We want a nice wall hanger but once we get it they play and feel so nice that we have to play it 🤘🎸
could you provide the link to the shop?
Please contact cathybestsound@163.com and say you saw my video and she will know what guitar you want.
Another awesome review. Thanks Mattias

What a great looking and sounding guitar, I love that top it’s really nice
Yea, I like it! Not a AAA maple top but sleak and very maple looking. 🎸👍

Wow.. i am really not a super-fan of chibsons.. but man, I think you got a really really good guitar right there, its not even my guitar but I still feel a little happy for you because of how good the guitar seems. I would have to think that it´s similar to an Epiphone Les Paul at least ?
Yea, the guitar is truly great! Better than epiphone I would say!
One thing that you did not mention was the setup, fretwork, and the playability out of the box....
All 10/10!
It has a Nashville bridge, not ABR-1. The Nashville is NOT mounted directly, it uses inserts.
Nashville is wider than ABR-1.
This is just the starting point for me. I’ll give the guitar a real nice update in a later video.
@@TheworldofMattias looking forward to it!
Thanks man! 🎸🤘
@@TheworldofMattias most welcome! Your content inspires Me and validates every one of us out here that feel the same and want the same in our guitars.

Ok, try instagram!
if i may throw in my 2 cents here....if you guys really want a les paul that looks like a les paul, has the right tone and volume knob placements, the correct pickups rings for a gibson and not epiphone sized...then i seriously reccomend any of the japanese tokai, burny, greco les pauls used or new.
Thanks for your thoughts!
But you are right, the Grecos are absolutly worth considering!
very informative video sir, im also planing to put in an order with Cathy, did you pay for it upfront or when the guitar was ready ?
Thank you! Yes, you have to pay upfront. She is building guitars order to order. She has group builds though, those guitars are ready to be shipped at once and you can get a picture of them before ordering.
what is a group build mean ?
Group builds are what she does to keep the costs down. Her followers on FB or Discord chose which guitars she do a run of and she makes a small batch of those.
Awesome review. And nice guitar. Thanks for sharing the knowledge. Do you share the seller and site with people?
Yes I do! Please contact me on Facebook and I will help you!
I like the Cathy/Made in China! Nice touch
Thanks man! 😊
Great video, really informative! I would be interested in a group but most definitely!
Thanks man! I’ve suggested it, I hope it will be built!
No fret nibs?
No, it’s not my favourite feature. I really don’t see the point of them? 😂
When did you order it ? Did you wait long ?
Yes, I waited a bit. It was ordered late feb and shipped mid apr and I just got it.
Very nice and yes I do believe it should be a group build thank you for the video.
Thanks man! I will try! 😊
Great review, thanks. Love the irony of wearing a Gibson cap while reviewing this.
Thanks man! It just happens to be my favourite hat regardless of which guitar I play 😊🎸🤘
Thanks man! I can get you in contact with Cathy if you want. If you are willing to wait a little longer I think you can expect great things from her.
Thanks man! I’m gonna do a Gibson and a fender video soon. Stay tuned for them!
That’s a great idea! I have a few projects I have to finish first but then I surely consider it! 🤘🎸
May we know how mutch you paid this one?
It’s in the video mate! 😊
@@TheworldofMattias Watched the entire video and 2 times the intro, still didn't find it, therefore my question 😀
Ok, I paid around $600. But if there is a group build on Discord, which I think there is, the price would lower, around $475 I would guess.
i sold off my Gibsons, Epiphones, and a Mexican fender and bought 4 Chibsons with the proceeds--and I still have enough money to buy a couple more Chibsons.
I have built guitars I have painted guitars I have done it all and I still don't understand how you can build a Chibson so cheap and some have very good quality built into them.
Are you building with american made parts?
AIO Wolf makes some great Les Pauls and Harley Benton also and for a better price
Yes, they make great guitars!
is the neck 50s rounded C shape ? is it nice and full or thin?
This one is more like a 60s neck.
that satin top looks so good now i want a satin finish. don't have to worry about finger prints under stage lights ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yes, I like satin as well, it has a nice feel to it. :)
Bone nut and the fretwork come on where do you go wrong.
Plays great! :)
the gaps between the outside of the guitar neck to the string is spot on the the routing is dreadful where the pots are which was a real shame.
Yea, I agree 100%!
The knobs look a bit high, compared to the real thing other wise looks pretty good, drop in some good pickups and maybe new harness and you could have a nice one
There will be a second video. Stay tuned! 😊

@9:36 you can see the binding was masked poorly prior to painting. There's paint running up the binding. Idk about you, but this wouldn't make me a happy customer especially at a $600 dollar price.
I don’t think they mask the binding, they probably scrape it, that’s much easier. But that said, no it is not 100%.
@@TheworldofMattias Yea you could take a razor to it, give it a light score on where you want the line to stay at, then scrape off the paint. Not too big of a deal. 👍
I will do it!
@popeye, it dont matter!!! the 3000 dollar gibsons are full of imperfections , so would you pay 3000 for gibson imperfections or 600 for chibson imperfections, either way you still not gonna get a perfect guitar, nothing is perfect only God !
@@stevenespinoza7735 Where did I say that Gibsons are perfect?, or Gibson makes a perfect product? I never even mentioned Gibson, nor their QC issues.

Very nice apart from the snot green tuners.
Yeah, I don´t know whats up with them!
She could've painted top in gloss simply by taping the rest of guitar off,it's called lazy! All in all it's a nice build!
It was better this way. I could do the clear coat my self. I have better laquer than the chinese 😂🎸
Haters are everywhere, you just have to live with it 😂
I don’t know about Artec, why do you think it’s that?
Your fret board is obviously dry. Put some true oil on it.
Ok, I will!
Think an Edwards, Greco or Burny would be on my list after Gibson Custom and before a USA. An actual Chibson would not even enter to conversation.
Agreed! 👍🎸
That looks like a plain maple top and not a figured maple top. Many Gibsons have plain maple tops. I like the look of plain maple, it's usually pretty consistent. Figured maple is a crap-shoot, some look nice, some don't.
I accually like the top on mine. Nothing to crazy but clearly maple. It always feels good to have an all solid guitar.
I’ll never understand satin finish Les Paul. Gimme a glossy fat biiitch anyday. But hey if people didn’t want it they wouldn’t have every manufacture doing it these days as an option
I’m with you! Satin finish on a natural all wood guitar is fine but on a burst it should be a gloss finish. But that’s my preference. 🎸🤘
Nice guitar!

I think it’s insane that you lot are chatting so openly about ordering counterfeit goods 😂 Even possession of counterfeit goods is illegal where I’m from. 10 years inside, unlimited fine or confiscation of assets (house, car etc). Good Lord 🤦♂️
Wow, where do you live?
@ Europe somewhere 👍
Only to sell & pose as a genuine model. To own privately is not a crime.
Who is cathy 🤷♂️
Cathy Zhong. Look her up on Facebook!
thats the best 600 guitar you ever bought im thinking

$600 is a bit steep for a copy, and I dont think thats a one piece body or neck. As long as you like it, rock on.
Thanks man!
Cathy is not an actual person....
Hahaha, yes she is! I talk to her every day! 🤣🤣🤣
The Chinese factory that make the body and necks for Chibsons are Epiphone employees or ex ones , so this is why they are usually spot on. The tuners are usually the Epi ones as well.
Interesting, how do you know?
@@TheworldofMattias it’s been documented in several places although a lot of people think otherwise because of the differences in the guitars. But they have to put differences in them for them to clear customs, otherwise they would be counterfeit. The small differences are how they “get away with it”
@@FrankCastleThePunisher666 no thats wrong. Having gibson on the guitar makes it illegal to import to any western country or to sell that guitar. And as for the epiphone guys thats just a rumor thats never been shown to be true.
Matthias, aren’t you worried that Gibson’s going to come after you?
I don’t care what you buy 🤷🏻♂️, but Gibson’s sue happy! 😉
Namastè. 🗨😉🧢
Thanks man! As all Chibsons I own, the guitar I recieve is just the starting point. This guitar will be a absolute killer once I’m finished with it!
That's hardware looks nickel to me, but it's youtube. It doesn't have that blueness that chrome has.
Well, I’m not an expert but if it is nickle then Cathy made a 100% guitar from my specs. I do think it is chrome though. I will change the hardware in a future video, I will compare them then. Side by side it should be easy to tell.
pot metal. crap.
