I agree. In Italy the etiquette demands greetings when you get in and get out of a shop, please and thanks too are highly recommended if you want receive a nice service. Of course there are rude people but it is not the rule.

The problem is that someone else told me that "Brits got to the conclusion that "please" lost it's meaning because it was over repeated, so they do not use it anymore". As an Italian, I would like to share with you that not adding at least "per favore (please)" when asking for anything in our country, would come across as rude to most of us. PS: there are unpolite people everywhere, even if in France where "Galanterie" is disappearing too quickly, and respect or other precious values. However, I know in UK, most of people are really respectful - like in Scandinavia - and you can be easily hurted by our behaviour.
