  • This is how I simmer my MSR Reactor backpacking stove. The MSR Reactor Stove boils water very well, but it can be difficult to keep it at a simmer for cooking backpacking meals.

    I used this stove day to day for 3 months last year, you pretty much have nailed how to simmer, I would add once you heat up the burner and are turning the heat down, if you turn it off, you can quickly turn the stove back on and it will relight off of the residual

    Looks like MSR has achieved the “holy grail” of camp stoves.
    Boiling water is fine, but actual cooking requires more than gross BTU’s. First off, you need to reduce the heat to the right amount. Just as important, you need the heat to be even.
    Camp cookware tends to be made of thin sheets of materials that don’t distribute heat well. Camp stoves tend to have point heat sources. Combine them and you burn the food.
