How can anyone not like these great interviews. They keep history alive for the future, and they keep westerns alive in our heart. May their family friendly fare live on forever for generations to come.

The Cowboys was a fantastic western. I so hated Derns character for back shooting Duke. Dern did so much to make that movie a,success. He always played a great bad guy.
I'm not familiar to that term of lingo "heavies" do you mean in his old age he has become diabetic and obese? No need to respond I'm just trolling I feel like I should throw that in there before you take it personally
I stood up and flipped Bruce off when I saw him shoot big john, but after years of watching Bruce I now am so glad I got his autograph once Just a fantastic performer.
I'm watching it at this very moment. Commercial time on Grit TV. I was 12 in 72. I fell in love with Westerns in my early 50s, except for Gunsmoke. Been watching that every chance I get on METV. God bless you, friend.
I also saw The Cowboys last night on Grit TV. Thanks to these John Wayne marathons, I've discovered some great movies, that I didn't give a chance when I was younger. The Searchers & True Grit have become my favorite westerns now.
Saw this at age 11 freaked out that "The Duke" got killed.......hated Bruce Dern ever since, his only redeeming thing he's ever done was his daughter, Laura.
I saw it then, age 9, and was impressed enough that I remembered it, even though I didn't see it again until 40 years later. I think it holds up pretty well. The Duke is reliably entertaining in a bigger-than-life kind of way, so it's just a matter of the quality of script and production for his later movies. I prefer the non-Batjac movies.
First time I saw the Cowboys in the 70s I was a teenager and Duke was my hero...when Bruce Dern shot him I about craped my pants.Seeing it as an adult I suddenly realized what powerful actors they where...one of my all time favorite movies...looking back I found Mr Nightlinger to be a most interesting character.
I think I was 17 when I took my girl to the drive-in to see the movie when it came out. She jumped in the backseat and said, well come on! I said, but this is John Wayne!!!
I was 12 when it came to our theater. What a great movie! I cried like a baby, (Hiding my tears) when John Wayne got killed!! I have always loved Cowboy movies. The scenery and outdoors. Great video! Thanks for sharing.
When the Cowboys came out in 1972 we watched at a movie theater where you could walk in half way thru the movie and then watch it again the whole movie. Great movie and cast. Bruce Dern did not want to be the one to Kill John Wayne either for he would always be known for that. Nobody wanted to see the Duke die in the movies. Great interview with Slim.
I saw it at a twin drive-in where you could watch it on one side while they showed another flick on the other side, then when they switched, you could go on the other side and watch again!!!
@@Dstrbrdgrnd man they don't do that at the drive in here. You can switch fields if you want to see the movie in a different double feature instead, but they charge you for another ticket. Course its still less than what you'd pay at a movie theater for the ticket.
Always been a fan The Cowboys and it's actors especially Bruce Dern's performance. Thanks again Rob! I always enjoyed learning and watching behind the scenes too.
Few are the films that never get old or can be rewound and watched again. The Cowboys touches many aspects of the human condition. Watched with my dad and that was priceless.
I’ve actually just watched this last night for the first time in years, it’s a great movie, what a brilliant performance from John Wayne, he seems so alone and vulnerable at the start when all the ranch hands clear off for the gold rush, that scene where he opens the corral gate to let the horses go is heartbreaking, obviously his death in the movie is hard to take aswell. The young cowboys started the cattle drive as boys but finished it as men thanks to mr Anderson and nightlinger
When you get people to hate you, in a film, you did a great job. Derm was cast prefect in all his films. I have to say these are too interesting to be as short as they are. Great work, Lee

My 2nd favorite scene after the later one where the strap is cut and the horse takes off across the water dragging a screaming Bruce Dern. Could he seriously have believed he could ask for their help and get it after what he did to them. It also reminds me of the great ending in Sleeping With the Enemy (Spoiler) when Julia Roberts abusive husband has found her and tried to kill her. He's down and he taunts her about having the nerve to kill him. She's holding a gun and dials 911 so he thinks he's right. But- when someone answers she asks them to please come quickly, that she has just killed an intruder. Doesn't look so smug when he hears that.

I remember seeing the Cowboys with my family at a drive in theater. I was 11 at the time. To this day, I remember what a great movie it was. My first into to the Duke, an have loved his movies ever since.
A couple of years ago, I ran into Bruce Dern, I told him how much I hated him in The Cowboys. He graciously said, "Then I did my job." I offered my hand and thanked him very much.
I adore Bruce Dern . I watched an interview with him and he said for a good ten years he had old ladies come up to him and hit him with their purse and say “Why would you kill the Duke”?
Boy! I tell you it was a long time after "The Cowboys" that I could watch Bruce Dern in anything. I know he was just acting but he was over the top. It would be fun t hear him talk about his dad - John Carradine. I feel he's overlooked a lot considering the amount of films he was in.
I was 15 when the cowboys came out. Living in the city during the school year and spending summers working/playing on the family ranch in Montana. Need less to say I was a huge fan of westerns then and still am today.
This channel is so refreshing to watch. I love westerns and felt a part of them. My grandfather on my mother's side use to ride in Montana with Charly Russell. He was cantankerous but one hell of a horseman.
Each member of the Carradine family has entertained and delighted us all in numerous westerns. I'm also not ashamed to say that I am also a huge fan of Bobby's character, "Lewis Skolnick" in "Revenge of the Nerds". That was a cast chock full of comic genius if ever there was one. I think Tom Selleck is our modern day Clark Gable. There was never another actor who could "out bad guy" Bruce Dern in those days. Classic Americana.
The first time I saw this movie I was probably 6-7yrs old. Bruce Dern scared the crap out of me in that movie and I hated him my whole childhood. As I got older that changed to him being one of my favorite actors because of it.

I was 9 years old and living in a small town in Montana when I watched The Cowboys in the theatre in 1972. I hated, and I mean hated Bruce Dern for years after that. It was a powerful movie at that time because it seemed so real and I could feel it. This is my favorite movie of all time, it still holds up today.
I was luck enough to see this film in the theater when it came out in 1972. Great film with an impressive cast, many who were just starting out here and went on to long and successful careers. The book on which it was based is terrific too.
I did not like Bruce Dern in any movie for so long, just recently realizing it probably was because of his role in the Cowboys! Just watched Monte Walsh too! One of my very favorites! Robert too! Ty Rob! 👍
I watched Monte Walsh, for the 1st time ever, and I couldn't believe that I've never seen it before! Gosh that was soo sad that the only woman he really loved , and had plans with, passed away . Have you watched some of the Joel McCrea movies? He was really a good actor, gotta say though, the movie Stars In My Crown was extremely great...5 stars!
Please interview A Martinez who was also in The Cowboys. I was in Jr High and HS in Sunland-Tujunga, CA with him, and he was in our drama classes. I’d love to hear him talk about this movie and now his role in Longmire.
The magnificent irony of THE COWBOYS, which has all three vital ingredients for a great movie which are script, casting and directing... is that the Duke gets to do some of his best work with a young liberal director, and it wasn't one of his typical Batjac stock company productions that were more about just getting together and having a good time, annually on his Durango ranch in Mexico, as with CHISUM, CAHILL or THE TRAIN ROBBERS... In this case Wayne was partly on location in Durango, Colorado and well challenged too by a method actor like Bruce Dern, and they both complimented each other to make one of a helluva memorable movie. Add to that one helluva John William music score that fits like a glove, and the vivid cattle trail photography of the legendary cinematographer Robert Surtees who shot BEN HUR, THE GRADUATE and THE STING and many other classics... The casting was the legendary Lynn Stalmaster who's eye for talent was unmatched. It was Robert Carradine's first movie, and he does a great "tell it like it is" interview with Rob. With so many new faces in cast and crew, the Duke was comforted by having so many of his old stunt pals like Chuck Roberson, Richard Farnsworth and alike, along for the ride! Well done for showing us Rob...
I remember watching the Cowboys as a kid. I am pretty sure it was the only time I ever cried watching John Wayne. They sure don't have movies or actors like that anymore. I miss those days. Thank you for doing these videos.
Sean's Woodcarving Thanks. Right now I’m working on a montage of John Wayne movie posters from Mexico with an introduction by Duke’s RIO LOBO co-star Jorge Rivero. Hope to post it this week. Keep up the good woodcarving.
GREAT episode Rob, as always! I'm working for a guy who was stage manager at WB for 40 years, he saw and heard John Williams recording his scores more than once. Bound to happen livin' in LA, eh? I enjoyed Robert's stories. Take Care and Stay Safe!
Thank you Rob for bringing these interviews to us. I love listening to the people who were there in the movies. When Bruce Dern shot John Wayne, I was stunned. I wanted to slap him into the next state. NOBODY shoots Mr. Cowboy!
Great movie, always appreciated such a charismatic, villainous, bad guy as Bruce Dern. Another actor as a villain, who had the same talents was, Dan Duryea.
That was a great episode of “The Big Valley” with Lee Majors under the wagon. Great to remember it, so now I have to watch it! Season 1, episode 26-“By Force and Violence,” though the one called “The Prize” Seas.4, epi 11, features Dern as a bounty hunter, and it’s very good too. Mr. Word, your show is my usual substitute for a donut after church on Sundays but with the current health shutdown, I could watch a baker’s dozen at a time.
The crazy Alice Bronc riding scenes, always reminds me of my childhood. My uncle would break horses, and trick me into climbing aboard a bomb, and laugh and cheer me on as I held on for my life when they blew up.Thats how me and my cousins, boys and girls learned about horses, and never quitting in the 70's. You get bucked off,you immediately get back on.
So much great information. Love the questions and all the personal observations of the guest and sweet memories. Westerns are classics similar to how folks enjoy operas in cultural settings. The old West is pure Americana and I enjoy your series immensely. Thank you. (That Bruce Dern- quite the character!)
Dern is one of my all time favorites. He's a great villain, but check him out in a couple of other dramas: "Nebraska" and "Big Love" and there's a 'making of Silent Running" docu on RUclips where you see him off camera.
Robert is a class act...He could be a cowboy and a nerd and that is no easy task. His laugh in "Revenge of the Nerds" cracks me up to this day and I have seen it 50 times if I have seen it once.
I always wonder what it’s like for an actor to do possibly his best work in his first job. ‘The Cowboys’ is a classic, with phenomenal music by John Williams, and it was Bobby Carradine’s first acting job.
The Cowboys was a fabulous film. John Wayne was outstanding as ever, but Roscoe Lee Browne stole every scene he was in. And as for Bruce Dern, I remember exclaiming, "He shot the Duke! He shot him in the back!" Such a powerful performance from a stellar actor. And the cowboys were fantastic, I wanted to be one of them.
This is my favorite john Wayne movie and Bruce Dern got whipped good by the Duke then the miserable scoundrel shot him that was hard to watch but those boys became men and took care of business because they loved him like a father ! What a classic movie !
Dern has to hold that character at the top of his favourite list. When people hate you for decades over a role, you did it right.

Sean's Woodcarving Thanks. Right now I’m working on a montage of John Wayne movie posters from Mexico with an introduction by Duke’s RIO LOBO co-star Jorge Rivero. Hope to post it this week. Keep up the good woodcarving.
@@AWordonWesterns Thank you Sir. My Condolences on your Mother's passing. You will be in my prayers. She looked like she lived an amazing life!
What a great interview!
GREAT episode Rob, as always! I'm working for a guy who was stage manager at WB for 40 years, he saw and heard John Williams recording his scores more than once. Bound to happen livin' in LA, eh? I enjoyed Robert's stories. Take Care and Stay Safe!
Thanks, David. Must have been thrilling to be at any John Williams recording session!!
Great interview with a great actor about a great movie.
“The cowboys” my all time favourite John Wayne movie.
As always a great Show Mr Word.
Another great interview Rob.
Thank you Rob for bringing these interviews to us. I love listening to the people who were there in the movies. When Bruce Dern shot John Wayne, I was stunned. I wanted to slap him into the next state. NOBODY shoots Mr. Cowboy!
You go, girl! Love it.
Great movie, always appreciated such a charismatic, villainous, bad guy as Bruce Dern. Another actor as a villain, who had the same talents was, Dan Duryea.
I love comments from people who know! Dan Duryea was awesome.
I'm glad this was recorded last year I thought for a while you had lost your minds :)
Love this movie. Saw it at the drive-in with my mom and dad. Bruce Dern always played an evil character. I hated John Wayne getting shot.
Thanks, Rose. Go for it! Less calories, too. LOL
Amen. A dozen "Word On Westerns" a day keeps the cabin fever away!
Yeah that's one of my favorite episodes. Do you know the S and Ep.? Or the story title?
The crazy Alice Bronc riding scenes, always reminds me of my childhood. My uncle would break horses, and trick me into climbing aboard a bomb, and laugh and cheer me on as I held on for my life when they blew up.Thats how me and my cousins, boys and girls learned about horses, and never quitting in the 70's.
You get bucked off,you immediately get back on.
Bruce was great in a movie called "Smile", about a small town beauty contest. Very "Altmanesque".
Thanks for giving me a heart, Rob. Bruce was so great in "Coming Home". He was so much more than a villain actor.
So much great information. Love the questions and all the personal observations of the guest and sweet memories. Westerns are classics similar to how folks enjoy operas in cultural settings. The old West is pure Americana and I enjoy your series immensely. Thank you. (That Bruce Dern- quite the character!)
I'll Never Stop Watchin Westerns and I don't care if B & W or 70mm Color...
Thanks Rob 👍
Dern had the half-crazy look down to a science . Then he was convincing and scary , now you can appreciate his acting ability .
Well I agree to a point but I have never been able to totally let go of my distain for Dern over his character killing Mr Anderson.
Dern is one of my all time favorites. He's a great villain, but check him out in a couple of other dramas: "Nebraska" and "Big Love" and there's a 'making of Silent Running" docu on RUclips where you see him off camera.
A good "despicable" Hollywood villain is worth their weight in gold, and Bruce Dern did a great job in this movie.
way back when Bruce hosted a forgotten theatre or B films late at night good stuff thanks Bruce
Mr Dern was the best evil bad guy of all time. I was blown away when I saw "Silent Running" A very different role, great movie.
Robert is a class act...He could be a cowboy and a nerd and that is no easy task. His laugh in "Revenge of the Nerds" cracks me up to this day and I have seen it 50 times if I have seen it once.
Bruce Dern was exactly the right actor for that role.
I totally agree !!
I always wonder what it’s like for an actor to do possibly his best work in his first job.
‘The Cowboys’ is a classic, with phenomenal music by John Williams, and it was Bobby Carradine’s first acting job.
another fine interview. Thank you.
45 years later bruce dern is the sob who shot the duke in the back. still mone of my favorite movies
Bruce Dern is the only "Bad Guy" that could make me really hate the character. He was one of the best!
GREAT MOVIE
This is my favorite john Wayne movie and Bruce Dern got whipped good by the Duke then the miserable scoundrel shot him that was hard to watch but those boys became men and took care of business because they loved him like a father ! What a classic movie !
My favorite part of the movie is roscoe leads the boys through town with the herd. The townsfolk couldn’t believe what they were seeing.
Love all your interviews.
Thanks, Edith.
