There should be a 50th anniversary DVD of The Cowboys, and these interviews should all be included. A huge "Thanks!" to you, Rob, from all fans of Westerns, The Duke, and The Cowboys.
Bruce Dern was the best “bad” guy in The Cowboys. I was a grown woman but he scared me. And there is no one like John Wayne. I guess I’ve watched every western movie he’s ever made and I never get tired of them. I understand when one of the men said they felt like he had their backs. You just felt safe and a lot more honorable with him.
Just to listen to these grown men talk about when they were young teenagers and their interaction with John Wayne, Bruce Dern, Roscoe Brown and others is PRICELESS! You have made something here for the ages. How I wish you could have interviewed the Duke, Roscoe and, MAYBE you could still get Bruce Dern on your show!! Thank you for these priceless interviews that we're all eating up! And I'm glad I stuck around to the end to hear the song !!! Awesome song!
I always become emotional on these Cowboy interviews. I was these guy's age when my dad took me to see this wonderful movie. Dad was a cattle rancher and I was actually one of his hands.
The scene where Wayne dies always cracks me up in not in the way you think. I mean Wayne was kicking Derns behind as Wayne turned and said poo at Dern as he wanted to turn around then shoots him . Wayne was like big foot walking away. He had told Dern before they film it that people will hate your guts after you shoot me Wayne told him .
The Cowboys is my favorite John Wayne movie. In the years that have passed, I had wondered how each of the cast was doing. I love all your programs but The Cowboys series was terrific. Thank you and the team so much.
Another legend Bruce Dern. Such consumate professional at his craft. Bruce scared me & I was only watching "The Cowboys". What a film. I'm almost lost for words trying to discribe the film to others. Kind regards from Adelaid3, South Australia.
So glad to have discovered this! I was dying laughing at the impression of “well you’re a hard man, Mr. Anderson “because it was so spot-on! The Cowboys is not just my favorite John Wayne movie; it’s one of my all-time favorite movies! From the music to the cinematography to the editing to those young kids to all those wonderful stars. What an incredible movie that never gets old. It’s a huge oversight that it didn’t get more awards and a big-spit-in-your face for anyone who thought John Wayne was not a good actor. Just watch that end “ summer’s over” speech. I guess I’d better end it here because I’m “burnin’ daylight “
What a great show. I was 11 when I saw the film and it has been burned in my mind since. Bruce and The Duke both should have won Oscars for their performances. I would dare say that the Cowboys is even better than the Searchers!
These interviews are phenomenal, Rob. Thank you so much for documenting these historical accounts from Western genre. Your efforts are sincerely appreciated.
When I was a young teenager in Seattle, I was a seascout...our boat was moored a few slips down from John Wayne's yacht... Right under the aurora bridge He was filming MCQue...we saw him a couple of times... maybe 1973? Legend.
Bruce Dern is a great actor, one of my favorites. He could be hilarious as well, especially with James Garner and Jack Elam in Support Your Local Sheriff.
I loved this show tonight, and the song at the end. You could feel he meant every word. Thinking about John Wayne and the gifts he left to the world. What a man. Thank you ❤
So awesome to see these now grown men that we all loved as boys, truly honored to have met 8 of them in Fort Worth at the John Wayne Experience, thank you Mr. Word for posting this amazing compilation of these awesome men that truly loved doing this movie.
I also watch this movie at least once a year along with other classics like the Quiet Man and The Shootist. So good to see all the interviews combined in this special the song at the end was heart breaking. Thanks Rob.
Rob, this was a great tribute to a great actor, a talented group of guys who were young actors when the movie was made. The movie was a memorable one but not one of my personal favorites. Hearing all the stories and remembered anecdotes was an amazing experience for me. Thanks for keeping Western movies and history alive.
I'd go along with Duke getting an Oscar for The Cowboys. But in this case, a second Oscar if not a third or fourth. Fabulous movie. And Rob Word is a one-of-a-kind interviewer.
Fantastic Mr. Word, thanks a million for sharing all of these great actors and actresses inside stories. Really makes the movie even more powerful. It was a pleasure seeing and meeting all of you in Lone Pine this year.
As always, thanks Rob for another great interview. I was fortunate enough to meet most of them along with Patrick, Ethan, Marisa and granddaughter Anita Swift at the NFR Cowboy Christmas this year. They have two new John Wayne books out and luckily got all of them to sign both books. By the way Nick found his glasses, he was wearing them at the booth.
❤ Bruce and his way of a reaction to anything that would be in question An argument Calling a Spade a Spade And then there is the Bad Guy Intimidating - his facial expressions & the moments in his lines to where he chooses to accentuate certain words He was a lesson to be had Such a stage presence All those kids in that movie We all would rally and root for them. And having the loss of “ the Duke” To see all of them little dukes all grown Is all good. Thanks to your sharing!!
Your best interview compilation ever Rob. I believe that your talent is doing your homework and knowing how to led and feed these actors into interesting memories of their careers. i find myself smiling through these memories. Thanks Rob.
I had such a crush on you cowboys when this first came out. Especially you A Martinez. I think I was only 13 at the time and I think it was the first film I ever saw with Bruce Dern. He was terrifying.
The young Cowboys were excellent. They were so lucky to work with John Wayne. I watch the beginning and the end. But I just can't watch Bruce Dern. He was so mean to John Wayne. I liked everyone else.
One of my favorites growing up. Saw it in local theater when it came out. With a real intermission. All these young men did a fantastic job acting. Mr. Nightlinger was great too. I still don't watch Duke getting shot. Do watch Bruce get dragged away.
I love Carradine sense of humor he killed me in the nerds who would’ve thought his father made so many spooky movies that he can come along and make one that would make you laugh your ass off kudos
BINGO on the Dern'o Merry Christmas everyone! And that Tribute song, based of Big Iron, couldn't be more fitting than any other song ever! Sure wish he'd publish it for radio and CD. 👍👍💯⭐ 🎅🦌🎄
When I was a kid, I considered Cowboys John Wayne's best movie. And I seen most of them on weekend matinee theater in the 70's. Second best was The Sons of Katie Elder.
This is the 2nd The Cowboys I have seen you make. The first with A Martinez and this one. Beautifully done. Also just watched a slightly over an 1 hour show independent of WOW, and it had Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr in it. I wish that you could have made one which you interviewed Roscoe Lee Browne whom I have always liked.
Thanks, user. I wish I could have had Ben and Dobe on. They were friends for years. I even spent part of my honeymoon in Durango in the Carey's guest cottage.
Bruce Dern is one of my favorite bad guys. Another is Jack Elam. Such convincing actors. I love westerns and just finished the Wagon Train series, most of which I missed while raising kids. Rawhide is another.
Still one of my very favorite John Wayne movies! This one was special because my Dad and his 3 sons all watched this one together when it was first televised and I cherish those memories today.
I grew up on this movie and it was made 8 years before my birth, my boss and I still talk about it today. "Slap some bacon on a biscuit and let's go! We're burnin' daylight!"
Good stuff, Rob, these guys are at the same age or older than Duke when the movie The cowboys was made. That's as weird as it can get. Anyway, thanks again for a great multi-interview production.
Nobody could play psychotic like Bruce 🤪....loved him in Gunsmoke episode "10 Little Indians"....epic! Rob, any chance of you doing an interview with the wonderful Ed Ames before we lose him?....thanks 4 all you do!
@@AWordonWesterns That can't be true. Ed Ames did one of the most memorable appearances on the "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson." 😀 I am sure that we all remember a part of that interview. 😄 I mean the tomahawk throwing demonstration.👍
Beautiful Direction an very Emotional Rob Word. I'm Bob Carradine's age. Loved this Movie. John Wayne was excellent in this, With the Cast as well. Thank You, Rob Word.
Great interviews, Rob! I had seen most of them before but still interesting. I saw "The Cowboys" at the theater in Germany while I was in the Army. That was the year that I turned 21 and was able to vote for the first time. I was already a fan of Roscoe Lee Brown, Bruce Dern, Slim Pickens, and of course the great John Wayne. I raised my daughters on John Wayne movies, including non Westerns, and had seen the others in various movies and television shows. (Another favorite was "Support Your Local Sheriff" where Bruce Dern showed his comedy skills with other great actors.) "The Cowboys" made me a fan of Robert Carradine and A. Martinez who I have followed since. I would have loved to have met John Wayne, or even been in a short scene in a movie with him if I was just an extra that he shot and killed. Now I am a fan of Rob Word. 👍👍👍😄😀
I remember being a little boy watching Bruce Dern Cowardly gun down John Wayne and I remember not liking this movie as a young boy. However from a middle aged man’s perspective with a lot of life experience on me this one of Wayne’s finest movies 2nd to The Shootist.

Thanks, Jim. I just did an interview with Rudy Ramos, the grandfather on YELLOWSTONE. He shared some nice behind the scenes on the show and also his work as a regular on HIGH CHAPARRAL when he was younger. Would like to get some of the other cast members to join us.
they reissued the Cowboys soundtrack on vinyl lp for record store day and i have that in my store framed, it has John Wayne of course and the knife scene with Bruce on it, very cool.

Dern was right up there with Andy Robinson, from "Dirty Harry" as the evil villains in the movies.
Yes he was. I hated him when I was a kid.

Great plot, great writers, and the best of actors. Bruce Dern made this movie top notch.
I always become emotional on these Cowboy interviews. I was these guy's age when my dad took me to see this wonderful movie. Dad was a cattle rancher and I was actually one of his hands.
Another fantastic Sunday treat. Wayne and Dern both delivered Oscar level performances. Dern hit a new dimensions of Evil that scared everyone.
