People don't realize how far ahead of its time this song and band was. Theres punk, hard rock, prog rock in there ten years before it happened, lots of key changes, a bass guitar solo!! Practically unheard of in popular music of the time and even now. Back in those days, bands used to be pretty boys smiling and wearing matching suits. Then along came the Who, the first proper band. Not a backing band for a lead singer or 2 songwriters. 4 real musicians.
What a time to be alive in London,I was certainly there at the time but sadly only a little boy of about five or six living in the Holland Park/Notting Hill Gate area,so although I remember hearing this song on the radio I wasn`t yet old enough to be going to all the events and cool West End clubs and live music venues to see all the great bands like The Who...Aaaaarrrrrggghhhhhh!!
so, im 16 and I just joined a band called imagine that Lead singer is 55 Drummer is 44 Bass player is 32 rhythm guitar is 20 Lead Guitar is 16 and we just played this at our first gig after months of trying to find a bar that would let a 16 and 20 year old play. Perfect

So many thoughts run through my mind with this song. I think about what parents at the time though when they heard this coming from their kids bedrooms. The lyrics. The drums at the end. So far ahead of their time. Heavy metal in it’s infancy. Love it!!
@@Sillimant_ I mean you can't deny that 60's and 70's had the most influence on modern music (and no this isn't me saying modern music is bad just gotta go where to look)

This song was written when Boomers were rebelling against authority. Now they are authority (or are aging out of power and nostalgic for when they ran things). The "hope I die before I get old" was Townshend recognizing in 1965 that his generation would eventually turn into everything they hated. How very right he was.

I love the shot of the late Diana Rigg at 2:22. The Avengers with Mrs. Peel was one of my favorite tv shows, as was Game of Thrones.
That bass ! Pure genius !
I found this from "A Silent Voice" and I'm absolutely VIBIN'. I love the vibes this gives off, just childish fun!

CONNIE GOT YOU
What a time to be alive in London,I was certainly there at the time but sadly only a little boy of about five or six living in the Holland Park/Notting Hill Gate area,so although I remember hearing this song on the radio I wasn`t yet old enough to be going to all the events and cool West End clubs and live music venues to see all the great bands like The Who...Aaaaarrrrrggghhhhhh!!
I love how energetic and angry this song sounds.
Any a silent voice fans here bc this song is a BANGER!.
so, im 16 and I just joined a band called imagine that
Lead singer is 55
Drummer is 44
Bass player is 32
rhythm guitar is 20
Lead Guitar is 16
and we just played this at our first gig after months of trying to find a bar that would let a 16 and 20 year old play. Perfect
Imagine that
diden't... left... good looks
+zackattack94 Fuck off honestly
+zackattack94 not about making it big, just about making something, making a few songs and playing in front of a crowd. you don't need a stadium filled with people.
+zackattack94 totally is if that's your opinion. but for some there's alot fun and fulfillment in it.
I'm 57. This song makes me a teenager again. I swear! If you don't believe me, you can just f-f-f fade away!
That generation definitely has the best music👌
Yes they did kids now in THIS generation don't know what they're missing.

Almost sixty years old and still the fight song of the rebel youth, that is rock and roll !
I used to be indifferent to the line "I hope I die before I get old," but the older I get, the more I appreciate its meaning.
This was a song of MY generation ! Love the men in bowler hats too - my dad became a ‘ man from the ministry ‘ when he worked at the Ministry of Transport in London and had to cross Blackfriars Bridge on his way to work !!!!
anyone listening and watching this video in july 2024, you are blessed. they sure don't make music like this anymore. thank God for youtube.
My favorite baseline on any song!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
So many thoughts run through my mind with this song. I think about what parents at the time though when they heard this coming from their kids bedrooms. The lyrics. The drums at the end. So far ahead of their time. Heavy metal in it’s infancy. Love it!!
This song will be relevant until the end of time.
no one can comment 'oh this is real music , what shit youngsters listen to today' if someone does he doesn't get the meaning of the song

The boomers, Xers, Millennials and now Gen z. We all want change one way or another.

Gen Z: "OK, Boomer"
Boomers: "My Generation"
Power move: Use My Generation against the Boomers
I don't get why everyone is calling this a boomer song when it couldn't be more Gen X.
This song was written when Boomers were rebelling against authority. Now they are authority (or are aging out of power and nostalgic for when they ran things).
The "hope I die before I get old" was Townshend recognizing in 1965 that his generation would eventually turn into everything they hated. How very right he was.
I'm a Gen Z and it seems like being a Boomer is cooler.

It's making fun of Mods.
So true
I remember ‘ winkle pickers ‘ too and visiting Carnaby Street . I hate heights but a neighbour got us tickets to the Post Office Tower before it even opened and a I felt physically sick being at the top and looking down on the TINY people below ! I remember Winston Churchill and Mary Quant too ! Plus the boutiques Biba and I was Lord Kitchener’s Valet !Mods and Rockers , Aldermaston marches and student protests !!!!
I was surprised to hear this in A Silent Voice as well.
