We all now that a good ol' N/A big displacement diesel engine is bulletproof, even with a very bad maintenance... The thing is that now they're all direct injection (1500-2000 bars), turbocharged with particle filters that clogs, egr valves that soot the engine... So now you'll basically get an engine that can't run 1-2 million kilometers without a trouble... sad, but true
I have just had my 3L V6 turbo diesel Mercedes CLS straight piped, and removed back boxes. Now it is ilegal to decat it in the UK so that's not a option. And iv'e had no increase in sound? WHY?

But, after we took the engine out and appart, put new bits and pieces, changed almost everything, rebuilt the entire engine, new brakes and suspension, etc., the car is actually very enjoyable to drive. Truth be told, I bought it for 800e so I could afford all the fixing it needed. But still, it is an Audi's first V6 :)
Not sure how modified cars are "great sounding diesels". Especially when 99% are illegal. You can modify every type of car to make it sound awesome. I wonder which STOCK diesel cars sound awesome.

jokke pappa i can say that the D24 is worse.. by far.. isn't basically a petrol engine converted to run on diesel.. so it's not unusual for a D24 to blow the top to the sky.. AND! the D24 runs on petrol no problem
The cylinderhead problems. a little more boost, and it's done. always. the used, but good cylinderhead for BMW TDS engine is rare, and everywanna buy it. if u use it as daily, you have to keep at least one for you. You can loose the compression any time. Forexample. The common rail engines better for tune.
