That's not the sound of the turbo spooling up. The turbo spools up during acceleration not when they shift gears. What you are hearing is most likely a blow off valve. You only really hear turbos spool up loudly if they have an anti surge compressor housing. Then you hear it screaming as the engine is pulling, followed by the blow off valve whoosh when they shift gears.
With a proper old 141 or 143, or any truck for that matter... don't torture it with +2000 rpm. Go for that deep rumble, where you also have all the torque. 850 - 1500/1650 depending on engine
The sound has a lot to do with the firing order which is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 with sound being most notable due to cylinder 7 and 8 firing sequentially, plus the diameter+length of the pipes. Personally, American here, I find the sound of an open pipe Scania V8 to be pretty good. I have driven almost all of European trucks. Scania is not comfortable, it lets inside dust alot, too noisy and it slides so quick on wet road , especially without trailer or with light weigh. After driven hours and stop the truck your tinnitus begins. It is a very tiring truck. Small mirror is useless, its place is distracting from traffic. I love its gear shifting time, and retarder. Volvo is the best ever. You drive 15-20 hours nonstop ,it doesn't tire , you can place your seat, steering weel all of body positions how you would like.
