It seems bossy to us in modern day, but back in time it’s part of her responsibility to avoid the emperor only favouring one consort or empress. She also did that to consolidate her position so I think it’s normal, though I really hate it when we are just vibing with the sweet affair between Ruyi and Qianlong and she interferes.
Yeah being in the Harem changes you she’s changed from sweet teenage Zhen Huan.. but to think her story.. Hongli’s father killed the love of her life, his own brother being jealous another man can have her, lost her own child, her best friend, sister, maid. Ruyi’s aunt had killed Hongli’s mother, framed Zhen Huan’s father guilty for crime he didn’t commit, murdered him, and her whole family, Clan reputation destroyed in a power play.. I think She sees that man in Hongli’s sometimes like father like son so she has to be careful who’s out to get her.. her whole life people trying to kill her and all she wanted was 1 kind of love and lost so Dowager Empress is consolation.
Probably because you are used to watching western historical dramas. In most East Asian royalties, queen/empress dowagers have immense power (in some aspects even more than the emperor). It is the position of highest power for Qing women.

But anyone poisoned the way she was would have had deformed child.. the seafood was raised fed and cooked in a certain way to not give away but it’s a poison and I’m sure it affects the mother not just the fetus, too in real life.. you may get neurological or physical damage.

Older Women look like mothers and grandparents. If I had a 20 year old concubine, I wouldn't ditch her when she turns 30. But meeting a 35 year old, I just can't see that being benficial unless they're extremely unique.
