Incredible interview Rick. So comfortable and wonderfully informative. Derek Trucks is the most adventurous and interesting musician of the 21st century. It makes it all the more amazing that he's so humble and affable. 😎
More than a great artist, Derek is an absolutely wonderful human being. Soft spoken, humble and you can tell watching him play with anyone - he is working for the music, not himself. He's a treasure.
@Bob Perrone. This. You hit the nail on the head. He really treasures those musicians that came before him and influenced him. Such an humble guy for being such a unbelievable musician.
We saw him in Mobile Al when he was about 14? I thought someone’s kid had wandered into the bar. He was so shy his band mates had to push him up front. Yes he was great. Yes he has gotten even better.
I shared this same comment in a recent video of Derek Trucks sitting in with Phish. But wanted to post again to reiterate what so many commenters have written below about Derek being a great person. Way back in 1996, I was a guitarist in a band, and we had the chance to open for a 16- or 17-year old Derek Trucks (with his band) at some tiny coffee shop in New Cumberland, PA. And let me put it this way: my band was not going to be lighting the world on fire. And that’s being kind. And of course even back then, Derek was a phenomenal talent. Clearly in another league. But this dude made a point to sit down and listen to us play and clap for our songs. At such a young age, he had already played with some of the best musicians on the planet (and now he is one). But he still took the time to listen to us and support us. That’s a kind soul right there. I’ve seen him play a dozen times since then throughout the years and am always swept away by how he makes his guitar sing. But that coffee shop in 1996 is my strongest memory of him. A class act.
Awesome story! I seen an interview of Derek when he was about that age and he was the same as now, thoughtful and egoless. He talks about how his dad told him not to get a big head like other young guitarist during his time, what an important lesson. Just feeling moved from music is more then enough and that's what artist should strive for imo.
Excuse my French but I was scrolling far down here and it's fucking awesome to see this from you Rhett :) I'm trying to get to watch your video on Khruangbin who you reminded me of, you're great dude and you've got a new fan in me.
The next one must be with Warren Haynes. These two back with Allman Brothers, my god... this is also my favorite video. I watched remembering so many moments of Derek live, specially with Allman Brothers... that recorded show at the Beacon in 2003, after releasing the Hittin' the Note album, it's pure Magic. Love your work Rick, and yours too Rhett.
I can remember the days where I thought Rick would never shut up but recently he's must have taken some constructive criticism because he's doing a great job with all these
Interviewing, like guitar playing is a learned skill. It takes work and self reflection to get good at it. Rick has been growing into this in a very nice way. Well done. Big fan of these sit downs with people who are doing amazing work in music.
The only guitar player I have ever heard in my 65 years that almost brought me to tears (Midnight in Harlem). No one else I've heard in modern music plays with his emotional chops.
Saw them at red rocks 2 weeks ago and bawled my 30 year old eyes out. No shame… best slide player of all time. Their arrangements are up there on top ten “big bands” of all time
TOTALLY with you, I'm your age and saw them live 4 times now. He is hands down the most lyrical guitar player I have ever heard. They are an amazing band, everyone in the group is a true musician that feels each other.
As legendary a Slide player he is, I absolutely love his fingerpicking and phrasing without the slide. How he's incorporated old school Soul music, Coltrane and jazz influences, Eastern sounds, Delta Blues, Chicago Blues, love the blend! ~ Music is the Best!
@@dennisperin2989 I think Derek already surpassed Duane bc of age and wisdom. I'm sure if Duane was alive he would be the best ever. Guitar players can get better with age
i only listened to the band like a year or so ago and it was one of those times when it just feels like the band has that extra connection that's needed to go from great sound to great vibe. listening to this interview helps understand why their music feels how it feels..
Derek is a cool dude. A rare breed. Greg Allman was the coolest guy. He was really great. Greg's voice was very notable. Musicians recognize Greg Allman's voice as one of the sweetest vocals ever. Real vocal musicians will tell you that Greg Allman was the real deal. Derek is running. Warren Haynes is still around. These guys are really amazing. The musicians that are around pale in comparison to what Derek is doing. I want to find them out on the road and get to see Derek.
Now that was an easy interview, wasn't it? I didn't know that Derek Trucks is a gifted storyteller, too. And everything comes across as heart-felt. Such a beautiful soul.
I always find the most gifted musicians to be profound thinkers, beautifully articulate and deeply genuine (assuming they aren't totally consumed by their egos and are decent people)
When you’ve played with The Allman Brothers at 12 years old, where do you go from there? Derek could have taken a shortcut to fame as a guitar prodigy, but instead he’s chosen to be a lifelong student of music and to develop his gift (and ours 💜). Shoutout to Rick as well for a great interview.
Wow Rick, this will be one of those caches of clips people will play forever when they talk about Derek in his later years and when he's gone. It will be considered one of the best interviews with him ever. A true gem of history!
Well put-they do have everything, what a dynamite combination! Her soulful powerhouse voice and great guitar playing along with the truly magical playing that Derek does. Wow... The Derek and the Dominos covers the band does have been killing me, love it! (along with everything else of course!)
He said "Well D... that's about as good as I've ever heard it, I mean that." He acknowledged Derek as one of the greats, as one of the masters of blues guitar. But it isn't sports, he's heard other foundation setting masters before Derek (BB himself for instance). Soul and emotional power is what is evident. As Dickey Betts said once "it ain't a sport, we're not keeping score".
My Lord, this interview is so good! I think Derek has enough stories and experiences for a series of interviews. He’s becoming a legend and doesn’t know it.
This is the best interview with Derek on the internet! Not only were the questions relevant and educated, but we got to hear Derek play something no one has heard him play. Well done Rick!
Also great how Rick just let him talk - the guy who in the 5 times I’ve seen him has said a total of two words on stage, just went on and on with so much great stuff. Beautiful insight into jazz, incredible old stories and those new song bits (for us). Also cool hearing his thoughts on the makeup of the group and the new material TTB is working in. Fantastic.
Great interview with stellar slide guitarist Derek Trucks. He mentions my father, Lowell George as an influence about 8:15 into the video. Love you, Derek! Well done, @Rick Beato!
This has got to be the single best interview with Derek out there. As a touring guitarist who started as a jazz horn player I’m happy to see I’m not too far off in my inspirations. The only other interview I would love to see would be Warren Haynes
Beato, you basically own the “interviewing musical artists” genre. Some of the best content being created today on any platform. Don Beato, we salute you!
Rick, you are making history interviewing the greatest musicians of our time. Not only that but you ask relevant questions, due to your immense musical knowledge, instead of the regular repetitive run-of-the-mill questions that people from corporate media do once they land these kinds of interviews. Derek has been one of my favorite players for a while and it was great of you to make his introvert self comfortable with your well-informed questions. Maybe one day you land a McCartney or Ringo interview. One can only dream. Fingers crossed though.
I agree with you 100%. He is by far the best interviewer of musicians I have ever seen. With his experience and knowledge of the music industry, the way he is able to dig deep into the technical side of what makes the artist they are. From how they compose, what keys they use to breaking down songs and identifying elements, discussing how they came to be on a technical level. You can tell with this interview and also with sting that they appreciate and enjoy every second, not having to answer basic cliche questions that have been asked 100x before. And also for the viewer, gaining valuable insight. He should conduct all music interviews.
@Joe Smith Rick could easily get some interesting information out of them. But yes being asked the same questions for 50 years, of course the answers will start to all sound the same because nothing much has changed.
I second this and am now far more appreciative of Rick than ever before and that is seriously saying something. As much as Rick is a master of many things, this is something extremely special he is doing for humanity.
This is not an interview. It's tapping into a stream of musical consciousness and the source which every musician searches for in honoring all on whose shoulders they stand.
Oh wow!!! Dereck Trucks!! I discovered his “Tedeschi-Trucks band” some time ago and it has become my favorite band even though I’ve always been into more Rock & Metal stuff. His soloing, their songs and arrangements, her soulful singing… I mean! I have loved all of your interviews, but this one’s special for me!
I really love Derek Trucks. He's probably one of my fav. guitarists. Unfortunately I don't really like the Tedeschi-Trucks band. All their music sounds super "samey" to me. They really do a good job of making one of the most exciting guitar players in the world sound boring. It sucks. I honestly wish I could get into it. That being said, some of his live solo performances are my favorite of all time. There's a live version of him doing the solo from "Midnight in Harlem" and it's a religious experience, no lie.
What a wonderful interview, Rick. There is so much more to Derek than his work with Susan and the band. He is truly a musician’s musician. No ego, just a deep appreciation for all genres of music. I had no idea he was such a jazz aficionado and that he has played with jazz greats like Elvin Jones. He is a national treasure. I loved every minute of the interview. Bravo!
You can just tell that he'd be doing the exact same thing regardless of whether he had 10 listeners or 10 million. He's one of the lucky few that discovered at a very young age exactly what he was put on this earth to do, and he does it beautifully
Derek is the only artist who, when I last saw him, received a standing ovation in the middle of the first tune of the night. It went like that for the entire show. It was the third time I'd seen him but the people I was with had never seen him before. There was one "Oh my God!" after another from them the entire evening. I need to see him again. Soon.
@@humboldtharry1289 I believe it was 6/21/2015 Ravinia outdoor theater north of Chicago in Highland Park. It was either 2015 or 2016. I'm getting older and my memory isn't what it once was, sorry. It was definitely Ravinia.
Derek and Duane. My favorite slide players. His impressions of discovering the Coltrane quartet is great. I still get chills listening to those guys play.
Amazing guitarist, passionate, joyful, humble… And the nicest guy ever. I’ve been watching him since he started opening for the Allman’s… then playing with them… then his solo stuff… then with Susan. So many of my favorite moments at concerts have had Derek on the stage. From tripping my balls off the first time in public at a Bros show where he opened at like 13 years old, to transcendental moments of Greg, Derek and Warren that make atheism impossible, to feeling the first drops of a passing storm on my face listening to Susan and Derek covering Rain as a tribute to Greg just days after he passed. His music and the music scene he’s spent his whole life immersed in have been one of the miracles in my life for sure.
A truly brilliant musician. Wise beyond his years. Uncommon ability to express his thoughts, feelings, and observations about his music and his influences. Above all, a quality human being. The real deal. I'd love to spend an evening with him over a dram (or six) of Laphroaig and hear the stories.
I don't know if I've ever seen Derek so comfortable and at ease as he was here. Fantastic interview. Your interviewing skills are impressive and underrated. Great job Rick.
Elmore James, Duane Allman, Ry Cooder, Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter, Sonny Landreth, Roy Rogers and this fella Derek Trucks are the finest slide guitar players I have ever seen and heard- the best of all time.
Great list. Check out Rick Vito as well. He's the guy that laid down the slide solos on Bob Seger's "Like A Rock". And like many other greats, he laid those solos down on the first take.
Tremendous interview! Derek is typically very quiet and reserved…..it was great to hear him speak deeply, and at length, on a number of items. Very insightful guy……and a tremendous musician.
As a 62 years old musician who has met literally thousands of artists in my time, the greatest, and experienced live shows that to say the least were epic. But experiencing Derek live last year, and watching him dance around musically on stage with Susan and his band, that has to be one of the greatest musical moments I’ve ever had. You can throw around a lot of slide players names as being one of the best, but Derek IS the greatest. And he’s one of the most humble, connected people I’ve ever seen. What a great great interview, Rick, when you’re on, you’re on. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I try to watch and listen intently to every video I run across that features Derek and/or Susan, or best of all, both of them together. I can honestly say that I've never seen another video with Derek so animated, visibly happy, and wide open to taking the conversation in any direction it just flowed into in this vid. He and Susan are so NOT pretentious, or competitive in their playing. Everything with them is about going wherever the music takes them when playing, or wherever it just naturally flows to when doing sit-down interviews, and how willing he is to give so completely of himself and the "Inside Baseball" narratives sharing info that most people have no idea how much depth people of his musical prowess simply have to possess to bring the listening audience along with him so that we feel as much as is humanly possible like we were there the night the Colonel died on-stage, or how much he really thought about the ABB family and on and on and on, while never boring the audience to tears or getting bored himself and just going through the motions. The dude just took us on a ride that only he and a handful of other people in the world know about from such a personal perspective. I want to thank Derek for even doing this interview. It was one of the funnest times I've watched/listened to an entire relatively long interview where I wasn't tempted at least once or twice to bail before it was over, or skip a segment here and there or whatever. I sat here watching and listening straight through from beginning to end and had so much fun and smiled so intensely that I would've still been listening if it lasted 2, 3, 4 or even 5 times as long as it did. My only regret is that I can only like it once. It deserves more than that in my case anyway, and I seriously doubt I'm the only one who felt as strongly about it as I do. Well, gotta git. Time to take my mutt out for his last unloading of the day and night. Y'all take care and I hope all y'all enjoyed that at least half as much as I did, 'cause if at half-way, it should still make for a great way to end a day. Peace Out, Blues
I have been playing seems like all my life. I've listened to a lot of great recordings. Seen a lot of great live bands. But this is the only man to take a solo during a live performance and actually Make me cry. This one Solo a moment in time. Touch my heart. So deeply I couldn't hold back tears. If that's not the meaning of soulful playing.I don't know what it is. I'm going to be 65 this year and may not have much time left. But I'll never forget that solo. And the joy that touched my heart.
Rick's greatest achievement might be as a music historian. Yet another grand slam of an interview. Derek is such an amazing cat. He used to hang and play with Mcoy and Elvin! thank you Rick for asking great questions and then letting him talk, and talk and talk..
I could listen to Derek trucks talk and play guitar all day. Humble, respectful and without a doubt one of the best guitarists ive ever heard. I saw him play with Clapton, Doyle Bramhall and Robert Cray and he blew them all away. His feel and slide play is unreal
Derek is such a solid guy. I truly appreciate getting to know this about him. The music was always up there; Now it has more value to me. Awesome interview Rick. You help make people shine.
Rick, I have been watching you for a long time. I think you are an honored member of the League of Èvtraordinary Gentleman and a living national treasure. You are a harbor of peace, joy and tranquility in an otherwise tumultuous world. Thank you, my friend. Shalom/gw
Witnessing the gratitude of Mr. Trucks toward those great artists who have come before attests to his own humble genius and genuine grace. Great interview Rick.
A truly remarkable interview! Compelling conversation in a relaxed setting that gives me an even greater appreciation for Derek's approach to making music - and Rick's skills as an interviewer.
Derek and Rick passing out massive amounts of homework! FANTASTIC Interview!!!! This is going to have to be re-watched a couple more times! Very rarely (if not never) do I NOT get goosebumps listening to Derek play! All body hair at attention!!! Just WOW! Rick, you really need to interview Susan too! God, I love those two - Derek and Susan! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
What an incredibly interesting interview! I always pictured Derek as quiet and reserved but being there at the Fox and in his element Rick really draws him out; the joy on his face and in his voice as he talks about music and his influences and those he’s known is just absolutely fascinating! Bravo Rick on this interview!!!
Derek’s love, admiration and enthusiasm for the music legends that inspired him, truly show and shine through his playing. Wow, what a player and what a guy. Another great interview Rick! 🔥🙏🏻💪
This was my favorite interview ever. Derek is a great story teller and has a lifetime of *being there*. He has always come across as the most down to earth regular guy while still being the greatest living slide player. Thank you Rick for an inspired and inspiring hour. I've sent this link to everyone I know. The thing about true masters coming across as humble normal people. I keep seeing that in really great ones. Hendrix was like that. In the classical world Hilary Hahn is like that. Totally approachable. Its like they get it that what they have is a gift to everyone and they share in that communion with joy which allows them to be truly transcendent artists. Doc Watson was another one. They are not ego trippers, they are channels.
This Saturday morning I watched your interview with Derek and to me this is one of your best . Just enough questions to get Derek rolling and you had the good intuition to step back a little - still staying engaged in the conversation . Always appreciated your interviews but this one to me shines through. Thought this interview was brand new and realized it was 2 years old.
This is by far the best Derek Trucks interview I've heard or read, what a pleasure to hear him talk in this super relaxed and musical setting. Thank you Rick, and I hope you take his word and visit their studio soon, maybe it could be a good way to show your audience how bands recorded in the old days vs nows. Best wishes from Chile.
Epic match up of world class musician/artist with world class interviewer (and Musician with a capital M)!! We’ll all be listening to this one more than once.
When you think of Derek Trucks, you never think of the phrase "Resting on his laurels". It was rewarding to hear about all of the influences he brought out in this interview. Regardless of who they are, he's having fun with HIS music inspired by theirs. What a bright spirit this guy is! Makes you feel good just listening to him talk about things he loves... including his wife, Susan Tedeschi.
I see Derek trucks i press "Like". I saw him live 2 times now. First time in my home country of Macedonia, a long time ago. He performed as a small 3 person blues band. Played in a very small club there and i had no idea who he was. I just randomly went there, no expectations... boy was that an amazing performance. the guitar was literally singing. Been a massive fan ever since.
I watched this for a second time this evening. Had a smile on my face the entire time as Derek talked and told his stories. As a music couple, Derek and Susan are truly something special! Kudos to Rick for his listening skills. Watching the 2023 Japan Tour on RUclips, which is beyond outstanding. Derek talking about the COVID times and how much time the band worked together; am sure the new tour is reflective of those times. First good thing, I have heard, that has come out of COVID!!!
I Am the Moon has me spellbound - I totally agree with the release strategy - full absorb each disk and when the vinyl finally drops, it will be magic. Dereck (and Susan) is/are national treasure. Best interview yet Rick. Seriously stoked about this.
Just came back from the show and they played all of “I am the Moon: I Crescent.” They split it up though, playing the first 3 songs in the first set and picking up the second half in the next. “Passaquan” is going to be a new fan favorite. Derek held everyone in the palm of his hand. It was incredible. The band was super tight and the new music was well-received.
I heard Midnight in Harlem for the first time while peaking and I’ll tell ya, there’s no more perfect, flawlessly made song front to back that I’ve ever heard. And music is literally all I do. Listen to it all day long. Non stop. All genres. Legendary.
I was having a scotch with my best friend and Midnight in Harlem came on, I was like ‘who the hell is that!’…..the point being, it’s one of those incredibly rare masterpieces that you actually remember where you were and what you were doing when you first heard it. Just musical perfection. 👍
The best music channel featuring the best living musician. Rick's interviews are the best. He's simply a fan that brings no ego into the mix. He hands the musician the reins and gives them the space to open up and create a thoughtful exchange of ideas. The bar has been set. I will watch this again and again.
Rick didn't have to work very hard with this interview. Derek has so much to share, apart from being a fabulous musician he's a walking history book of American music.
One of the best invterviews I've ever seen. Derek is just an amazing human being on every level. His aura just exudes warmth, personality, humbleness and decorum. The type of dude that anyone would love to just hang with. And on top of all that, he is hands down the greatest slide guitarist ever. It's not even close. The man is literally a musical savant. I could listen to him play 24/7. And I could listen to him talk all day 24/7 as well, haha. I can't wait to get home and bust out my slide and mess around with some of his techniques that he discussed. Amazing interview Rick!
Derek is absolutely, absolutely great, and has all of the personal qualities you mention. I’m not so sure that ranking ‘the greatest’ of anyone involved in any genre of anything (painting, sculpture, sports, music, philosophy, you name it) is not really possible among the group of the truly great, but in any case I don’t think one should overlook Duane Allman, who essentially invented this form of slide guitar and died at 25. His music also had a soulfulness that is tough to beat. His brother is biased but he said that Derek is the guitarist that Duane would have become. We’ll never know. Having said that, my wife (a gifted musician herself) and I have seen the TTB 7 times and are planning an 8th, and we saw the ABB in their lineup with Derek 4 times. All astonishing performances. We marvel at how Derek continues to work and improve, especially when that seems impossible. Only a tiny number of musicians do this.
I am just profoundly grateful for the music of all of these artists have given us. And for anyone who cares (which should include no one) in no way do I underestimate the otherworldly greatness of Derek Trucks. One of countless, even a limited, example: the TTB’s version of “Tell the Truth” in the Layla tribute, with Trey Anastasio, Doyle Bramhall II, Susan, Mike Madison, the entire band. And that is just one of countless examples. Unquestionably the best band playing today and among the best ever (again, I avoid trying to identify the best and almost don’t think it’s fair to those who might have a claim to be called that). Sorry about running on and on.
Something I just realized about Derek. I noticed that he constantly talks about other musicians. It's not about him. He appreciates the musicians who influenced him as though he'd be no one without them. What a humble guy.
Seeing them live even further confirms this. The entire show he is giving space for the other musicians on stage to shine through. He never comes across showy or conceited.
Rick I LOVE how you sit and listen and give your guests space. We all know you are knowledgeable AF but you don’t feel the need to show it. You make it about the guest, not you and that’s why your interviews are so great. I hope more and more top artists decide to choose you to get their message out because they know it will be a quality interview and it will be about their music and only that
47 year old New England native. Been a Derek fan forever, a Susan fan since she was selling her own CDs at shows and I've seen the Allman's 11 times. Rick, this interview is my favorite interview on RUclips. Thank you Rick and Derek! ❤ I only wish it was way longer. Could listen to you two talk for days.
Rick is such a great interviewer because he is a master musician, a fan of these talented players and is genuinely excited teaching . The players are aware that Rick is a supremely knowledgeable, talented and a multi instrumentalist. It is a respectful and unique .
Brilliant! As always, you're the perfect host. Your questions are appropriate, and you let your guest talk, expound, and share their passions. You did this wonderfully with DiMeola also.
Word! And Pat Metheny, and John Scofield, and Bernard Purdie, and Ron Carter.. and I’m sure I’m leaving out multiple great musicians.. I’m sure I’ll listen to all the about multiple times, there’s just so much good stuff to pull from them (and I’m not a musician, I can’t imagine the field day I’d have if I was).
I appreciate this interview because he is my favorite slide player over the last few years. His attack, his emotional vocabulary, and his superb tone make him the most interesting guitar player I am familiar with. Best of all, he knows music from a deeply reverent and respectful point of view. The best musicians I’ve ever met are just like him, deeply talented and profoundly humble.
I saw Trucks playing with Eric clapton in 04 or 05 in Germany. Never heard of him before but was really impressed by his solos. I admired his work ever since.
It's really a great thing when you get to meet people you respect and admire and they turn out to be as nice or nicer than you thought they might be. It's an incredible gift you're giving us Rick. Thank you so very much.
Derek is so unbelievably articulate and so erudite in everything, especially jazz, he is unlike anybody in music living today. He‘d be a sage if he wasn‘t so down to earth and humble

Incredible interview Rick. So comfortable and wonderfully informative. Derek Trucks is the most adventurous and interesting musician of the 21st century. It makes it all the more amazing that he's so humble and affable. 😎
Rick, this is the most important interview.

Absolutely.
Absolutely. Articulate. Amazing interview.
I knew about Susan before Derek. Together they created the best band.
What I learn:
- Those artists work their asses off
- they don't complain
- they say good things about other people
This musician is maybe one of the best around right now.
That's awesome, it's funny how most of the time, the best musicians are also the coolest.
What a treat thank you Rick and Derrick 😎😎🕺🕺🕺😂
Phish sucks.
This is officially my favorite video you've ever done.

Seconded. One with Warren would be fascinating.
I concur Rhett.
Child prodigy became grown man prodigy. I love Derek's playing. The Master of Silde.
Absolutely. He and Ariel Posehn are my favorite slide players atm.
Child prodigy for sure. Saw him with Warren Haynes when Derek was 14, and he shredded then!
Huge props to Rick for playing a very much secondary role and letting Derek get his full thoughts out. Takes a lot of discipline
Seriously, good interviewer. Too many interviewers try to say their piece and it comes off weird.
I can remember the days where I thought Rick would never shut up but recently he's must have taken some constructive criticism because he's doing a great job with all these
When it comes to music knowledge and ability Rick can hold his own with most of the people he interviews. That helps a ton during these interviews.
Rick is a good interviewer.
Um
Same…
Saw them at red rocks 2 weeks ago and bawled my 30 year old eyes out.
Agree, try Billy Strings!
As legendary a Slide player he is, I absolutely love his fingerpicking and phrasing without the slide. How he's incorporated old school Soul music, Coltrane and jazz influences, Eastern sounds, Delta Blues, Chicago Blues, love the blend! ~ Music is the Best!
Only second to Duane Allman maybe the finest slide player of all time…RIP Duane/Gregg
Duane and Derek are the goats.
@@dennisperin2989 "playin since they babies" (j sebastian)

Love some Zappa...saw him twice in early 80's..easily best band live ❤.... oh yeah I'm a dead head too..just love great talent when I hear it ❤❤
I am so pleased that the Allman Bros. tradition continues.
To be that f-ing talented and that humble--- what a nice guy Derek Trucks is...MASTER of slide -- Duane Allman would be proud...
Derek is special...He's one of 'them', goes beyond guitar playing. He's a true musician.
Man what a class act. Polite, thoughtful, well-spoken, and one of the best musicians in the world.
i only listened to the band like a year or so ago and it was one of those times when it just feels like the band has that extra connection that's needed to go from great sound to great vibe. listening to this interview helps understand why their music feels how it feels..
One of the finest players in the world
Now that was an easy interview, wasn't it? I didn't know that Derek Trucks is a gifted storyteller, too. And everything comes across as heart-felt. Such a beautiful soul.
Just seems like a genuinely good human being.
I always find the most gifted musicians to be profound thinkers, beautifully articulate and deeply genuine (assuming they aren't totally consumed by their egos and are decent people)
He's the best!
@@alexchng Cue the Pat Metheny interview
Come on now, give Rick the credit deserved for being such a great interviewer. It wasn’t an “easy”interview Rick made it appear easy, perhaps
When you’ve played with The Allman Brothers at 12 years old, where do you go from there? Derek could have taken a shortcut to fame as a guitar prodigy, but instead he’s chosen to be a lifelong student of music and to develop his gift (and ours 💜). Shoutout to Rick as well for a great interview.
one of the greatest guitarists of all time. As an Indian I feel extremally proud that he got inspired from Classical Indian music.

Wow Rick, this will be one of those caches of clips people will play forever when they talk about Derek in his later years and when he's gone. It will be considered one of the best interviews with him ever. A true gem of history!

My favorite current band, they have everything. I love Susan's singing as much as Derek's guitar playing.
Well put-they do have everything, what a dynamite combination! Her soulful powerhouse voice and great guitar playing along with the truly magical playing that Derek does. Wow... The Derek and the Dominos covers the band does have been killing me, love it! (along with everything else of course!)

When BB King says "that's the best I've ever heard it", you know Derek's playing is special. Great interview!
It’s rare to find an interview where he has a guitar in his hand
Also great how Rick just let him talk - the guy who in the 5 times I’ve seen him has said a total of two words on stage, just went on and on with so much great stuff. Beautiful insight into jazz, incredible old stories and those new song bits (for us). Also cool hearing his thoughts on the makeup of the group and the new material TTB is working in. Fantastic.
Agreed!!
Damn Rick you've really outdone yourself with this one. I've been blown away by every guest but Derek is one of the best in the world.
Great interview with stellar slide guitarist Derek Trucks. He mentions my father, Lowell George as an influence about 8:15 into the video. Love you, Derek! Well done, @Rick Beato!
Your father was awesome!
Your dad is a legend. What a great player and writer he was. God bless.
Your dad was one of my favourites. So glad to hear Derek give him his due.
Still love listening to your dads stuff. He was an amazing player
As far as ime concerned your fathers contributions to little feet hit the spot his playing and super rich vocals 2nnd to none be proud.
This has got to be the single best interview with Derek out there. As a touring guitarist who started as a jazz horn player I’m happy to see I’m not too far off in my inspirations. The only other interview I would love to see would be Warren Haynes
I agree, Warren Haynes would be a great one, too.
These guys are both masters.
@@JoeGator23 fabulous musicians, even better dudes. Both of them are in contention for nicest dude on the planet.

Add Jimmy Herring to that list too! Would love to see Rick interview him.
Yes! Just saw him recently and it kicked ass.
Beato, you basically own the “interviewing musical artists” genre. Some of the best content being created today on any platform.
Don Beato, we salute you!
Here here AD. Here here!
I so agree. Fantastic stuff Rick!!
Don Beato! 😆 I love it!
Helps me appreciate music in such a more complex way! 🙌
Thought you were about to say “own the internet….”! And I was about to agree!!!!!
I just can’t get over just how excited he is about music history and his almost child like excitement over all the musicians he met and listened to. ❤
McCartney and Ringo hopefully sooner than later. :/
As much as Rick is a master of many things, this is something extremely special he is doing for humanity.
my signature under this.
This is not an interview. It's tapping into a stream of musical consciousness and the source which every musician searches for in honoring all on whose shoulders they stand.
Wish I could double-like this post!
Nice!
What a nice guy! I wish the regular guitarists were this humble. God bless
From there go backwards & hear where he came from.
I relate to this so much. Last couple of years Blues, country, jazz, soul, southern stuff, it is all hitting me harder than anything.
The man is smooth when it comes to slide guitar.
@@skierpage absolutely! I got reaaally hooked after their NPR Tiny Desk concert!
Soon.
Where was that show? I’d like to look it up
@@humboldtharry1289 I believe it was 6/21/2015 Ravinia outdoor theater north of Chicago in Highland Park. It was either 2015 or 2016. I'm getting older and my memory isn't what it once was, sorry. It was definitely Ravinia.
Derek and Duane. My favorite slide players. His impressions of discovering the Coltrane quartet is great. I still get chills listening to those guys play.
I'm named after Duane Allman, and when I was young, I hated it. I don't feel the same way now.
The best interviews are the ones where the interviewer hardly says anything. I’m 2/3 of the way through this and am loving it.
So great to see Derek healthy, happy, and still that humble assassin. Living his best life and killing that guitar game.
You need to add Blind Willie Johnson. Check out Dark was the Night

I just shake my head in awe. The tone and feel and the humility of the man. A blessing.
Tremendous interview! Derek is typically very quiet and reserved…..it was great to hear him speak deeply, and at length, on a number of items. Very insightful guy……and a tremendous musician.
Derek is an utterly awesome musician and human being, and such a well thought-through, sensitive, revealing interview Rick, thank you.
This one sings to my heart. What a beautiful soul. You can feel the sincerity in his voice and playing. Much love and thank you.
Right on the mark...There are people in the world that are what you hope to be...Derek IS!!
Total bodhisattva vibes! ❤
Oh boy you have blown me away with this. I adore The Allman Brothers Band and Derek's spell with Warren was fantastic.
I've seen Derek play with Eric Johnson and man, it was absolutely beautiful
Wow!😳
Love your comment. I said the same about Derek laughing, etc..we don't get to know this side of him when he's up on a stage...
Agreed he has done this to me many times
GREAT music can do this. My dad and I both have been known to tear up when it's just too moving to handle.

A truly remarkable interview! Compelling conversation in a relaxed setting that gives me an even greater appreciation for Derek's approach to making music - and Rick's skills as an interviewer.

Derek shared so much in this interview, fantastic. He's a deep thinker. Total respect.
I have been going to concerts since I'm 12. I have never heard a guitar solo that brought me to tears until I heard Derek Trucks play live.
What a great guy. Part of American Music Royalty.
I love it! Seeing them tomorrow and can’t wait to hear the new stuff live.
Agree completely. Each release deserves it's own breathing room. Love how they are rolling it out.
Rick you've outdone yourself yet again, seeing the enthusiasm the two of you have for music is beyond inspiring, I'm reaching for my guitar now :)
The finest guitarist of several generations, leading the best live act on the planet. He makes the guitar elicit the most amazing sonic art.
100%
perfectly put agreed
An absolute master guitarist and artist. I can't praise Derek enough!
One of the greatest guitarists of his generation. I'm very glad you were able to get him on!
Such a great interview...as free-flowing as his slide playing
I love when Derek says, “and that’s part of how you can hear around corners”……
Such a smart, cerebral line
Rick I LOVE how you sit and listen and give your guests space. We all know you are knowledgeable AF but you don’t feel the need to show it. You make it about the guest, not you and that’s why your interviews are so great. I hope more and more top artists decide to choose you to get their message out because they know it will be a quality interview and it will be about their music and only that
Yep. Rick uses his mastery to ask great questions - the kind you know the artists appreciate.
Absolutely 💯
Derek is easily one of the most under appreciated players out there
47 year old New England native.
Rick, your interviews with these amazing artists should be in the National Archives.Rarely have I seen any better!
This is special.Derrick brings The Allman Brothers good vibes into the future.
I recently learned of Derek by accident, I have been a music fan since the 50s. Music is such an endless treasure. Thank you. Gerald.
