  • Avril Mansfield, PhD, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute (KITE), University Health Network, Toronto, Canada, discusses the barriers to routine implementation of aerobic exercise in stroke rehabilitation. Dr Mansfield conducted a study on whether physiotherapists are effectively delivering aerobic exercise to patients after stroke, identifying lack of knowledge, equipment, and concerns about patient safety as significant barriers to physical activity prescription. Despite these challenges, patients are generally willing to participate in any exercise prescribed by their therapists, highlighting the need for systemic changes to enable better implementation of aerobic exercise. This interview took place at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2024 in Basel, Switzerland.
