I was sitting in a dive writing a letter and some lady was playing the guitar and singing the schoolhouse rock song about nouns. Never before have I felt and heard a smile. I turned and sure enough she had grin. Your energy in this has a similar feel. It is genuine and good music.
Your fingers fly up and down the wooden neck like water in a Creek bouncing off rocks creating a tune only the can replicate....Bravo!!!! Most excellent rendition ! Notice the chickens come calling....
Love it, I think I told you about my great grandfather from my dad's side was in the civil war on the confederate side from Missouri. He was the one I wrote my first banjo song about. Well, I found my other great grandfather was from Pennsylvania and was also in the civil was but was on the union side. He was part of the Co K regiment protecting Lincoln at the time from the little I read about him. Banjo music just reminds me of that period of time in early American history.
I have recently gone through several life changing events. I also had to learn how to forgive more than I ever thought possible. On a better note... I took wooden banister support, a domino tin, a G guitar string, and a spring for reverb: all to construct a one string fretless guitar. It was hard making music at first, but it was an addictive toy. I admit it is very hard playing fretless. It is so much easier now and a lot of fun. Then I found your channel. I listen through a Bluetooth sound bar. I watch you laugh when you try to add more slides and it gets tougher with added slide. I have to laugh with you knowing how much fun it is. Better than any video game trying to be fast and accurate. I and many others have noticed that your smile is the best music because it never seems to stop. Methinks that an abundance of joy makes your music and smile inevitable. THANK YOU for sharing. Depression is no longer a battle. Please don't change a thing. Just keep being you. And keep jammin'.
Brilliant! Music should elicit feeling in the listener. It should have character and be alive, and for me, that was full of joy and lifted my spirits. That was played perfectly, even though it maybe wasn’t perfectly played; your joy in playing Cindy was communicated to your audience, and that’s what it’s all about. I’m going to restart the video again.
It ALL sounds good to me, Phoebe. I imagine 'Cindy' as a background sound track for two horses pulling a wagon along an old country road. Toto & Galena are on the job debugging the yard. Yum! Be Well.
You should have a kids show every Friday on PBS called Fretless Friday where you show the kids the chickens and play the banjo. Hold it, you already do have that show.
The Allison technique does make it sound differently! I feel it adds more “range” to the jam! BTW, since fretless Fridays have been a thing, I fret a lot less! Thank you!
_"Well, Cindy got religion, she's had it once before. She grabbed my ol' banjo, man, and threw it on the floor. Get along home, Cindy, Cindy, get along home."_ I'd first heard the song via the duet recording by Johnny Cash and Nick Cave, released in 2003 in the "Unearthed" box-set.
Thank you again for cheerful Music, and Jokes! It sparkles my heart to share your music, and improvement with my nearly blind 87 year old UNSTOPPABLE Mum, and her yard full of chickens! She was concert pianist back in the day ...four hand Bartók ...she loves your music, and Chickens! She would love to take her Steinway out to the Lawn (Huge Smile). Kindness knows no bounds. Respect! Next week...on stage with Bela Fleck and Steve Martin at Carnegie Melon yea?! (Huge Smile)
Yes, it does make a difference. There is some timing difference and it gives a richer "ringing" sound, there is more going on. At least that is the impression I get
Great song Friday. You mentioned a strumming technique and think I know what you were saying about the physicality of playing governing your tempo instead of concentrating on tempo it physically limits you and mechanically keeps time and your brain can wonder off and think about lunch. When playing the drums especially. If a song starts off with the bass drum only and you’re nervous about everyone’s eyes on you to play perfectly, tap a beat on your leg while you play the bass out loud and it regulates your tempo. Ghost notes and stuff like that. Cheers!
Get along home Cindy Cindy, get along home, I'll marry you some day popped into my head before you started playing.. if you ain't having fun playing the banjo, well just wouldn't be right. Thanks for being genuine, and the chickens. Keep reminding us to smell the roses Phoebe, your playing is getting better every week 🎉❤
I like the way you up stroke higher on the neck also and though it only adds volume, it is very stylish. You appear to be building your stage performance and style beautifully.
This live recording is amazing , Phoebe is amazing . So nice to hear real music that hasn’t been altered . This sound she did put me in a very happy state of mind and calming
I am SO addicted to Cindy now! I loved seeing how you worked with and improved the intonation as you played. It's hard for the fingers because "in tune" is in a slightly different place on each string even when the fingers are in the same position - you're doing really great! As a fiddle player, I sure do appreciate it when other string players deal with the challenges of no frets! (PS Some of the times you were "not listening" you definitely were hitting the tuning very well - don't assume it was all like the times you noticed the "off" notes...)
i think recall in an ol western movie show. the words stick out like i should know. i do several tunes of names not known. for college learnted nursery ryms with our other mountain songs from books had an family sing longs.
Your phone was using both cameras to try and compensate for the sunlit background. This creates parallax* which your phone's software tries to correct on the fly. When it fails, you get that "transparent" effect in places. It's a cool feature when it works. *two images from slightly different angles - like most people get from their left and right eyes. Our brain processes these images and interprets them as 3 dimensional!
Striking (or picking) the middle of the string causes it to "chime". If you get it just right the string vibrates on both ends and is still in the middle for an instant. That produces a pleasing harmonious sound that seems to come from nowhere.
Hi Phoebe, @2:08, the strum gesture does change the timbre nicely as you point out & also delays slightly the up/down repetition, opening a sense of swing & motion. And it's fun watching you do it! Hope all is well, take care
It’s always fun and delightful to watch you play.
Your channel is stringing me along to happy places. THANKS.

You were really having a good time with that song, I do like the extra enthusiasm. Happy Friday!
Loved it. Good Banjo is a lot of technique, and a lot of personality. You got both.
I love the sound of that banjo ❤
“What good is the banjo if you’re not having fun with it?” Perfect
Magical my friend! Just what I did not know that I really needed! Thank you! ❤
Thanks again Phoebe smiling as always x 😄
Your fingers fly up and down the wooden neck like water in a Creek bouncing off rocks creating a tune only the can replicate....Bravo!!!!
Most excellent rendition !
Notice the chickens come calling....

Saved "My" Fretless Friday for Saturday... I had as much fun watching and listening as you did playing it..Laughing and Loving it. ❤

Thank you for all of the work you put into each video, especially when you are exhausted 😁😊
I love not fretting. I literally fret less when I hear you playing your banjo, no matter what day it is! 😁
A Friday afternoon fretless get together, thank you for taking the time, it's always a pleasure.
Blessings and Shalom in Him

"That opening thing" can be an amazing beginners tutorial = clawhammer technique + small melody on one string.
Thank you Phoebe.
Sounds really good on the fretless. The other day it sounded great on the other banjo too. 🐔
Awesome!
Excellent 😊
I look forward to Fridays.. !
Doc, this may be the best Fretless Friday! I think the C tuning works well. Great dose! ❤❤❤❤❤
Only Channel that keeps me in time with a smile

Oh your joy! Love it. Beautifully, fun and happy. Yeah, make that swing! Cindy, I play it so differently. I need to let go and just swing!
That was some great playing, Phoebe, thanks for doing all these videos 😊
❤ Love your work Phoebe. Perth West Australia

Awesome tshirt 🤘
Thank you so much Phoebe! What a different sound between the two banjo types. They both fun. And you are right, it’s a wonderful song.
This put a huge smile on my face . Wow ! Phoebe was in the zone with this one . Plus to top it off, she is so cute ! Cuteness overload 😊
That handroll adds a church lick.
Wonderful. Thank you for taking the time to play so we can hear you on banjo. Keep up the great work.
Fretless Fridays 👏 🪕
I say! Well done young lady! 🙂
Love the right hand swirl move!
That fancy flourish on the chords is delightful. Thanx Martin London UK
Yes, it does make a difference.

Pickin' n grinnin' , you have a million dollar smile ☺
I remember that saying from late 60's!! Pickin'&Grinnin'! And here you are, Doing It!!
*Doin' it!
Happy Fretless Friday Phoebe hope you have a great weekend and thanks for another foot tapper.🌻🙂🧡
Always fun! you bring so much joy, Thank you Phoebe
Very nice song thanks for sharing.
Phoebe Fun on Fretless Friday
yes the circular strumming does add something
hard to describe, but something like "soul"
That technique around the two minute mark sure sounded more musical than the standard one. Passions is always part of music.
Not only fun it gives a flair to your playing and showes your comfortable with your instrument.
What a joyful melody and so well played. Love the fretless banjo because it has a more mellow tone and it sings. The jig is good! :)
What fun! I look forward to more songs in C!

Banjo camp seems to have done quite a bit for your playing! Amazing to see your progress on the fretless. Always look forward to these.
Oh how wonderful.
I'm loving these, thank you!
Good stuff!

Marvelous! My favorite part is that irelandic gig.❤
*Applause*

You go right ahead and have fun Phoebe. It sounded good to me.

That was great Phoebe ; I reckon thats how the fretless banjo should be played. Enjoyed listening to you and watching you play. Have fun!🐔🪕
The candor and honesty is what makes your channel great!

i like it
you are an amazing banjo player! been tuned in for some fridays now, thought it ought to be said.

Thumbs 👍
Like it even better on fretless😊

Excelente Phoebe!
This sounded fantastic, great tune played really well!
Plus that swing up the neck Is in the shape of a smile - talk about being fretless 😊
That neck strum creates an interesting change in depth.
You say you made mistakes .., your so called mistakes are jewels, Thank you ,

Fun is number one!
Bravo ! Beautiful.
