On the Craftsmanship too Nice job on the shifting Frank ! I cant get tired of that old Bus and the videos I envy you guys the only negative thing i see was the way the blind on top of the drivers windshield Waves around would make me crazy driving ? I dont like things inside the vehicle. Moving around on me it gets too distracting

    Just found the channel... excellent stuff!!! I`m going to start working on my new purchase... a 1976 GMC 9500 horse with the 6N71.... only 45k original miles... was an old Air Force truck... just sat around mostly I`m told. I have to rebuild the engine she smokes something awful. I put new injectors in... the old ones wouldn`t free up. I`ve rebuilt cat and older cummins engines so this will be my first Detroit. One question though.... can you install the liners then put the pistons in or are they tapered. Awesome channel man.... you`re a damn good wrench!!

    To float the gears you have to use the gas pedal. If it's trying to grind....increase or decrease the engine RPMs by pressing on the gas. Have you ever downshifted in a car using the clutch ?........what happens....the RPMs increase....so...to downshift by floating the gears....you have to increase the engine RPMs. Those transmissions are synchronized to shift up or down at certain RPMs........by the way....if that transmission is not supposed to be shifted by floating the gears. Eventually you will have a transmission overhaul in your future. Usually 9speed transmissions and up are meant to have their gears floated. 4, 5 , 6 speeds are not meant to be shifted that way....unless you know for a fact that it's a sychronized transmission.

    • @MeetJoeBlack55
      @MeetJoeBlack55 5 лет назад

      Spend a little time with an old truck driver, he will show you how to properly float ANY manual transmission. It's all a matter of matching engine speed with road speed for each transmission ratio. You will learn the 'road speed band' for each individual gear, and be able to regulate the engine speed to match and allow a gear change to that proper gear at any time you are within that 'road speed band'. It sounds complicated, but easy to pick up on if you have any mechanical knowledge at all. There is no need to hit the governor every time you need to upshift, at slower speeds and less power demand, you can shift sooner and quicker by not running the engine all the way to governed top speed. I know these comments usually fall on deaf ears, but so many times I wish I could help these owners enjoy their equipment so much more, by educating them about road speed/engine speed/gear ratios.

    • @ShainAndrews
      @ShainAndrews 5 лет назад

      Might be tough on his leg, knee or hip. Lots of guys float gears as much as possible. Occasional grind is not a big deal. Floating gears without a tach and the engine clear at the back takes some practice.

    • @79tazman
      @79tazman 5 лет назад

      using the clutch is great if you don't have to use it much but if you do your leg get's tired after a while of stop and go driving that's why lot's of truckers float gears. Imagine driving 12 hours of up and down shifting using the clutch every single gear it get's tiring on the leg after a while

    • @williamdegnan4718
      @williamdegnan4718 5 лет назад

      On the upshift, you run the engine up to the governor, put light pressure on the shifter and it will pop out of gear. Foot off the accelerator, count three and slip it in to the next gear. Been a while since I have driven a coach. But, it is sweet. I also love the way they handle in tight quarters. I remember running the driver mirror an inch off a building wall for about 30 feet and hearing passengers suck in their breath. Then cranking in a smooth, hard turn, to line up to the platform curb.

    • @leor838
      @leor838 5 лет назад

      @@williamdegnan4718 again, don't count three. Listen to the rpm and then shift when it matches road speed.
