2013 WiFi Nexus 7 in 2008 Subaru Legacy Spec.B

- This is a 2013 Nexus 7 installed in a 2008 Subaru Legacy Spec.B dash. This replaces the stock nav screen which was pretty useless and had long been replaced by Waze and my phone. The install was pretty easy using a bezel made for the Japanese market. I kept my stock bezel and nav screen intact.
The only thing that bugs me about the install is not being able to move the USB port as easily as it could be done with the 2012 Nexus 7. I had to cut into the passenger vent and run the USB cable across it, which impedes the vent from moving freeley. The 2013 version is much faster and has a better screen resolution, so I'll live with a passenger vent that is not fully articulate.
Here are some geeky details about the tablet and the software:
- I have a custom kernel on the tablet that automatically puts it into a deep sleep mode when it loses power, it also enables plug and play USB DAC support, auto mounts USB drives and turns on fast charging in USB host mode.
This kernel has a VERY small battery drain while in firm sleep mode, about 1-2% every 24 hours! This means that even if your car is off for several weeks, your tablet will still resume from where it left off. The fast charging mode coupled with a short USB cable and a 2mAh USB charger will charge the tablet about 10-15% per hour with screen on, Waze and GPS running, and music playing.
- I'm using an OBDII Bluetooth adapter to get the car's data into the Torque app.
- When the tablet resumes, Tasker resumes the music automatically and launches Waze. This can be changed to do whatever I want.
- For the gestures, I have GMD which allows me to do next/previous using swipes. A pinch takes me home.I need to play with this more and add more gestures.
- I have other gestures through Nova Launcher: two finger swipe up brings up the app drawer, two taps brings up Google Now, two finger swipe down launches the quick settings panel.
- To get data, I am tethering from my Nexus 5. When the tablet turns on, it connects to the Nexus 5 over Bluetooth, and this triggers the WiFi Hotspot as well as Tablet Talk. When the Nexus 7 disconnects, Tasker turns the WiFi hotspot off and disables Tablet Talk.
- The audio is being sent to the original headunit from a USB DAC at the 3.5mm Aux jack in the armrest through a very short audio cable. This pretty much eliminates ground loop noise. Using the original HU, I keep steering wheel volume control. If I add a special module, I can enable a whole range of remote control through the steering wheel buttons, so this will be a future project.
- Tablet Talk lets me see incoming calls, and make calls through my phone, and the audio is handled by the Parrot Bluetooth kit that has been in the car for several years (this was my way of playing music in the car, through A2DP from my phone, but quality is not the best). I still need to figure out a way to enable Google Now to dial people, right now it tells me this device is not capable of making calls. I can make calls from the Tablet Talk interface (this was not featured in the video)
- Streaming videos will not be played while in motion of course
Here's a link to where I got the bezel: www.avojdm.com/...
Here's a link to the LegacyGT thread with some examples on how to install a Nexus 7 in a 2006-2009 Legacy legacygt.com/fo...
Cool install. Gave you video a link because of Archer on Netflix.
Awesome...i think i will make this type of setup my next project
Thank you! I added some more details about the software to the video description. The kernel I am using will be available to the public soon, and it's the best way to do it if you are interested in minimizing battery drain while the tablet is in standby.
Jorge d'Argence Whats the kernal name please? Also can you please tell me little bit more about how you did the bluetooth + tablettalk to trigger wifi hotspot and turn off upon disconnect? This sounds really awesome. Thanks man.
That is so cool!
Thanks for sharing :)
That's great ! Just ordered the Avo bezel , did it come with some sort of bracket ? How did you get it to stay securely
Hi, it looks great! How do you connect the gages, and what gages you can have there?
Thnks :)
Where did you get the Japanese Bezel?
how is your tablet connected to the internet? vie a hotspot or does it have like a free built in wireless internet?
It was using hotspot from my phone, which automatically turned on when it connected to the car's bluetooth via Tasker
Excellent! Can you please explain a little bit more about the wifi tethering and Tablet talk connection with tasker? I have a similar setup but having problems. I have a Sony Xperia Z2 unrooted phone. If I'm correct the way it works is when tasker power any state triggers the action BT autoconnect -> Sony Xperia and in Xperia Tasker detects the connection and triggers the WIFI tethering and Starts Tablet talk in BT mode (Tasker locale plugin) ?? Am I right? Please help me with this. Thank you.
That is correct, but I had issues with the bluetooth connection between the phone and the tablet (it would fail to trigger Tasker way too often), so I am using the car's bluetooth (I have a Parrot mki9100 kit installed as well) to trigger tasker on the phone. This way it's very reliable.
how do i add the start up video like I've seen most have i just have the stock Timurs kernel one
i notice you also have the nexus 7 second gen ( slightly wider than the 1st gen)…. the space between the vents was wide enough to fit it? i ask this because the stock one in my car is to narrow
Yes. This was a second gen Nexus 7. The space was perfectly fine and as you can see at the beginning of the video, the edge of the tablet is noticeably peeking on the right side of the opening. Remember that the bezel I used is not the same one as the OEM navigation, that one would have been narrower
Hi can you post some video of how you open the dash as i cant find any video and i dont know how to open dash to get the screen out .. please ... Thanks
I don't have the car anymore, but look for the process on legacygt.com. I got all my information from there.
I have everything I need to do the install but can't figure out how to unlock, root, and upload my timurs kernel onto the tablet .... Would you be able to give me some info and help me though this ...... Or I would pay you to have you get mine set up like that
Check out the Nexus 7 forum on xda developers. There are guides and tutorials there that can help you get it done. Read up on it a bit and then if you're still stuck you can ask for help. People are usually very helpful unless you ask something that is clearly stated in the stickies, but if you do a bit of your own reading, you'll get help.
What custom kernel did you use? Timur's beta rom for the 2013 nexus 7?
Yes. He has released a final version 2.0 and has a new 2.1 beta. It's worth every penny.
Jorge d'Argence Agreed 100%, Timur implementing built in Reverse cam support with Easycap in 2.1!! Very excited.
Jorge
i cant find the complete video of how exactly i can install this magic nexus 7
I never made a video of the full install. There's a how to thread on Legacy GT that I followed. The guy used a first gen Nexus 7. There are some photos of my progress on this XDA thread forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723947
Hi, where did you purchase the bezel unit to fit the Nexus 7 unit in the dash?
AVO. Here's a link www.avojdm.com/product_info.php?cPath=26_54_60&products_id=108
Jorge d'Argence it says product not found. Do you have another link by any chance? Or perhaps the name of the product?
tmanepic not anymore. My order confirmation doesn't say what it was called. It looks like they don't sell it anymore.
Can you post some video of how you wired it up?
Unfortunately I didn't take a video of the install. It's very simple though. Check out the linked thread in the description for more information about how it was done.
it work too legacy 2007 165hp?
I've legacy IV 2008 and i Want to install it, but How?
Check out this thread (there are some videos there from others that have done the same) legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/tablet-pc-carputeri-149420.html
i need the link of the bezel plz
How did you get to fit the RHD Bezel in the LHD Car? I tried the same but mine won't fit at all
I had to do a bit of dremmeling to get it to fit. Look for the thread on legacygt.com that has the walk through. He shows what needs to be cut.
edit: There's a link to the thread at the bottom of the video description, and here's a thread on XDA Developers that has some of my pics and talks a bit about the software part forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723947
thanks for answering. With some dremmeling mine should fit aswell, thanks. I also bought Timurs Kernel, but my OTG Adapter didn't work so now I'm ordering the one Timur recommends in his email. I hope that one works because I'm living in Germany and I won't send it back...If I get it to work I will post some pictures.
What did you do with the battery? Because of the heat while charging and the heat in the car in the summer?
That's the last thing that is holding me back with installing it
I had to put a sun visor whenever I parked to prevent the tablet from getting too hot. This fixed the problem of getting into the car and having to wait for it to cool down before using it. Other than that, I made no other changes
would you be able to install one of these into the 2005 legacy?
The process for installing the tablet in the dashboard should be the same, but getting the audio into the head unit would be different since the '05 doesn't have an AUX in.
For this to work does the need to have the Factory Navigation or will it work with the Regular radio, I have an 08 LGT non Nav..
Regular radio, no nav components are needed. I use the existing Nav mounting plate to install this more easily, but no electric or other Nav parts are needed to make this work. You can replace the cubby with the kit from Japan, which is made to fit a specific Panasonic Nav unit. I got it from here www.avojdm.com/product_info.php?cPath=26_54_60&products_id=108
I guess what I was asking is how did you make the audio connection to the OEM radio,What was used to make it work. I am not worried about fitting it I am more concerned about making the audio and other functions working as far as making the gauges all work together
Oh, that was easy. My car has an Aux input, so I just ran a USB cable to the armrest and plugged in the USB DAC there. Then I used a short 3.5mm cable to go from the DAC to the Aux In. This way I can use my steering wheel controls (as well as the headunit) to control the volume.
It's not the best setup because my stock HU sucks and it starts to clip around 10, but I have the Subaru subwoofer under the passenger seat and it's decent enough. I do wish it had more oomph.
Next upgrade will be to get an amp, better speakers and use a Joycon EXR to make the steering wheel controls work with the tablet's digital volume and avoid clipping.
Jorge d'Argence MY car also came with the Aux button in the radio, I don't quite understand how you added a USB cable when it's just a regular Aux Jack that connects to the unit. and another question will iTunes work with this or would i have to go to some other type of music box/player to get my music that I already have on my iTunes....Thanks
I also have a 2013 nexus 7 in my car and I use co pilot nav.the nexus 7 has its own gps built in so co pilot works well.
my question is how did you get toque to work I cannot get it to work on my 05 outback
What Bluetooth OBDII adapter are you using? You must use one that is compatible. I'm using this one www.amazon.com/dp/B005NLQAHS/ref=pe_385040_30332190_TE_M3T1_ST1_dp_1
THANKS I WILL TRY IT
You're welcome! Your car uses the same CAN Bus as mine so it will work.
Jorge d'Argence I also use that adapter. works really well
Mike Sabotta yeah! It's great
