Great project. All the best. I am doin the same thing on my Subaru xv Australian model. The project is still on paper. Will start the installation soon.
Hey Jeff, awesome install, very Inspired. I have a question though, do you happen to still have that Confidence in motion animation? i cannot find one online at all, and your link is dead. thanks in advance!
Unfortunately my server that ran that link went belly up and I lost quite a few files. That said, I should still have the file somewhere else. If I find it, I'll update that link.
Gday mate! Great video, I was just wondering what your experience was like dealing with japan parts for the panel replacement? I am about to order one myself, and they claim a 30-40 day shipping time. Does this sound similar to what you experienced? (I am also from aus)
Jeff, just seeing this video. which console/vent/dash thing are you using? Looks like theres one with a smaller hole (i assume for the stock gps screen) that blocks out some of the nexus but you have something larger (and maybe with narrower vents?). Probably very hard to get this part nowadays im assuming
The car parts are genuine Subaru but are no longer made. You can only get them secondhand. Everything else is essentially eBay and your local electrical parts shop.
Hi, great video! One question if I may: how are you planning on implementing the reverse camera? I already have an RCA one now on my 2-DIN head unit but I haven't seen anyone connect it to their Android device yet. Ed
Timur's ROM also comes with an app to show the feed from a UVC composite video capture device. The reverse camera will contect to that and will switch over automatically when the tablet detects the reverse camera feed is on (powered by the reverse lights).
Jeff Sereno Ah thanks, it's a great help. I've just seen one or two of them on ebay - RCA-USB UVC adapter. The description says it won't work on Android tablets with built-in cameras though. Will it work with a custom ROM?
Spaghetti888 A true UVC capture device should "just work" on any system be it Android, Linux, Windows, Mac, etc with no additional drivers. In the case of Timur's ROM specially made for car installs, it also carries support for some variants of the popular EasyCap USB capture device that you can get on eBay. The difficult part is getting hold of a supported model because they all look the same!
Jeff Sereno Good thing you responded to me - I searched for "UVC USB" and got a couple of items located in China at 30-odd pounds. The Easycap dongles cost about six!
Hi Jeff, did you ever manage to get the reverse cam going? I got a capture card with a stk1160 chipset but I get a "failed to init video" message. And the thing took a month to come from China!
Sorry for the late reply. By the time I bought the air vent replacement, clock relocation kit, double-DIN fascia and replacement HVAC controls on top of the tablet and other bits of kit, I spent around $1K. These days now you'd just get a headunit with Android Auto built in. Sorry, don't sell them ready-made. Also, Subaru no longer manufacture the parts I used in this project - you can only pick them up secondhand now.
The replacement fascia has narrower vents on the side to make more room in the middle to fit the tablet. I've seen people modify the fascia of the factory nav unit (after removing the nav unit) to some success, but there's work involved in doing that and making a neat job of it.
hi there Jeff Sereno, i was wondering how you were able to get the Subaru video clip to come on after the nexus is turned off. I'v been trying to figure out how to play your clip on my nexus 7 but it has been nothing but a big fail. i would really appreciate your help on this. thank you.
That is a function of Timur's ROM. If you don't have that, then you will need to use alternative software to trigger the video when power is disconnected.
Hi, You mention the voltage regulator being important on the power supply but the link in the description links to one that doesn't have one? Or is the one you linked to correct?
stidor The pic in that listing is misleading - the PSU provided by that vendor _does_ have a regulator as shown in the video because it's the same listing I got my PSU from. If it's properly set from factory, then the regulator is not needed anyway, but it can be useful for deliberately over-volting the output to 5.2-5.5v or so to overcome any shortcomings of the USB charge cable if it's made of cheap materials (in particular most cheap eBay OTG Y-cables).
Jeff Sereno Ah excellent. Thanks heaps! Really appreciate your time and effort documenting your process. I'm about to start my journey doing the same thing. Your video, description and links will be a big help. It's been a few months since you did the upgrade, how do you feel towards it? Was it worth the time, cost and effort?
stidor I've actually got the next video somewhat ready with it installed in the car, but I haven't edited it for upload yet - haven't had time. Was it worth it? Yes, absolutely. It looks and feels very OEM and becomes a bit of a conversation piece with new people in the car. The overall effort was really quite low in the end, but the result feels great.
Would love to see it when you get the time! Have ordered all my parts today. Did you end up also doing the info panel relocation? Also are you able to go into a little more detail on the 100Kohm resistor modification you made to the OTG Y-Cable? This has got me a bit worried.
stidor Yes, I also did the info panel relocation - expensive bit of kit, but certainly easier than trying to fudge something up - fits like a glove. As for the resistor, I didn't use it in my final install in the end - for testing I used an OTG+four-port-USB-hub cable from FleaBay (my original plan for hooking up multiple devices, but dropped that idea later because the tablet was then providing power for connected devices) and found that OTG+charging just magically worked, so I currently have that cable connected, but only have the USB hub connected to it plus the tablet charge cable. You'll see it when I upload the next video.
Audio is done over Bluetooth - no cables. The charge cable is a modified Y-Cable from eBay - you have to remove the outer casing on the MicroUSB connector to make it small enough that it does not foul with the air vents.
Unfortunately it is now out of production. You can only buy it second hand now, or get someone to fabricate it for you. I've noticed on a few forums that there are projects of people looking to laserscan and 3D print them.
@Jeff Sereno i would love to have this set-up in my 2008 legacy , unfortunately i don't have all the components is their a possibility we can arrange you put it together, then i could buy it from you
No, it's too hard to do that because if I do it for one person, I have to do it for everyone. You need to source a tablet, need to source the vent second hand now since Subaru have ceased selling it. It's a lot of effort for me to do for others, for what is just a hobby, sorry.
+Jeff Sereno hi Jeff I can get a vent all I need is a tab already prepared, just straight plug and play I can mount it myself please if you can kindly get intouch via email bro
Kennedy Ndirangu I'll be putting together a video on how to prep the tablet later as I've had demand for it. Hopefully in the coming week or two. Follow that, and you'll be fine.
Here's my post with some info from the Liberty ASN forum: forum.liberty.asn.au/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=15482&start=90#p413482 (please note that the photos are missing due to a server crash that I never actually recovered from).
Apologies - my server went belly up some time ago and I lost quite a bit of data. I should still have the files somewhere offline, so I'll update those links in due course when I find them.
@Jeff Sereno I can`t found the bezel in the japan site below and I have alot of question regarding to the installation could you please send to me your email
+Ahmed Shawky The only places I can suggest would be car forums, wreckers or eBay. It's late for me at the moment, so if you have questions, just post them here and I'll answer them later - that way they can benefit everyone else too.

Looking forward to Part 2!
Great work, my gen4 liberty options look good 😀
Thank you very much for this video, have done my own using your guidance
Hi Thanks for the video. Great camera work. What camera and lights do you use? I can't make videos as good with my current set up.
Camera was a Sony A6000 at 50fps in 1080p, ISO at Auto. Lighting was a desk lamp.

I got mine in about two weeks all up. It really depends on their stock levels.
if you had to change anything in restrospect what would that be, thinking of doing similar instal
( not subaru)

How was your power down video made? Is there a collection of videos somewhere? Thanks.
I extracted it from one of Subaru Global's many RUclips videos. You can grab a copy of it from the link in the description.
Can you ask for a wallpaper name?
hi nice work.what was the total cost of the project.and do you sell a ready made one.
Sorry for the late reply. By the time I bought the air vent replacement, clock relocation kit, double-DIN fascia and replacement HVAC controls on top of the tablet and other bits of kit, I spent around $1K. These days now you'd just get a headunit with Android Auto built in.

Hi Jeff. Thanks for the video . Just wondering if i can use my original air vent central panel ? Do I really have to order a new one ?

+Jeff Sereno ive just realised that after seeing my car. Its a dodgy job, you are right about buying the modified part. Thanks for the info
@Muhammad Ali - please change your personal settings to allow people to reply to your public comments, as right now I can't reply to your comment!
Do you have a step by step guide on how to do this? I'm literally planning on buying a 4th gen Legacy soon and would love to be able to do this to it.
I'm thinking of putting a video together, yes. For now I'm writing instruction to post on a Liberty forum soon.
Excellent, one question though- does the heat from the vents not affect the performance/reliability of the tablet?
Patrick Walsh Nope. But then again I generally always have cool air coming out, even in winter! =)

Hi Jeff, where abouts is the OBD connector :/ searched high and low around the drivers side area and for the life of me can't find it.
Found it :)
