    I just recently opened up for Gregg and the Buddy Rich Big Band with my high school Jazz Ensemble. Great show, great drummer, and what an amazing cat! In fact, his performance of this tune inspired the performance of Dancing Men on my channel. He's kicking this groove!

      @BigBillLucas 8 лет назад +5

      +Mr DDD3az Yeah i have heard this before from other friends of Cathy, whenever they say anything negative about Gregg she gets pissed, it's really sad that she doesn't see that Gregg is completely wrong for the job, and just thinks that all us drummers are jealous.
      I would have thought that after fore years of endless negative comments on you tube that Cathy would finally start listening to the internet drumming community and come to her senses and drop this guy.
      Ah well i guess love is blind.

      Greg is Cathys boyfriend, so i doubt she will fire him. She is in a tough situation...actually he can instantly play closer to Buddy if he practices the secret...some of you have figured it out....its called play like a jazz player...
      EVERYTHING depends on pushing and fattening the beat...simple practice on fast swing...just play ride and hihat 2 and 4, until it starts sounding like a jazzer. 99% of all drummers , 99% all of their playing time, is just impeccable ride swing and 2 and 4 hihat...they are like 98%percentile experts at just ride and hihat...snare is just color after the hihat perfection.
      i cant believe Greg hasnt played to a jazz bassist properly...dum, dum dum dum dum dum dum dum...
      get that hihat crisp and perfect with a pro jazz bassist. ALSO his drums are not jazz...they are rock and not tuned properly, and cymbals sound like Sonar, or ZBT, not heavy high quality bronze

    Wow! Very surprised on the petty comments. Gregg never claimed to be a jazz drummer. He's always mentioned his rock influence. What he brings is a new approach and dynamic to the Buddy Rich band. Isn't that what music is about? I'm sure Buddy must be proud. Obviously Gregg is doing something right, he's got the gig. Everyone else is just watching him and criticizing. That's easy to do. Bravo Gregg! Keep swinging. 🎶🥁🎶

    Were I configuring a Ludwig®/Conn-Selmer kit of similar scope, I'd be using two concert snare stands outboard of the hi-hat for both height and angles; I'm used to old-school traps extrapolated from the configurations of the 1930's. I also favor guts on all snare drums as an anti-buzz measure, e.g. an LC-S483-DX Coliseum Model in the center and LC-S471-DX and LC-S472-DX Symphonic Models on the left.

    • @goto7320
      @goto7320 7 лет назад

      WOW...i mean you guys are wrong completely...let me tell you...i am 1 of the most over trained and over instructed human beings alive...i know more about jazz and percussion than you can possibly believe...not that i earned it...NOT that i am bragging...simply my brother had the BEST percussion instructors in the world, and he gave them to me....accept i went on to get more instruction from Tom Float legendary percussion instructor...and Stan Kentons lead Sax, Steve Wilkerson...he taught at Mt. SAC college...i brought my guitarist friend along to MT. SAC and there was Ron Anthony....Frank Sinatras guitarist teaching there for Steve Wilkerson...i also got taught jazz by one of the BEST jazz educators in the world, Don Gunderson, of 1970s Cal State Fullerton,CA ...he put Jazz on the educational map, over there...
      whats my point? i will tell you what they say, not me...this is NOT MY opinion but fact...
      Greg suffers from "METRONOME HANDS" its a thinning of the beat and backside of the beat....from too much electronic time...Jazzers PUSH the beat organically....its like practicing to todays music...and i practice to 70s music, like Boston, YES, police...or Dennis Chambers....i guarantee if you practice to Miley Cyrus' drummer and i practice to Dennis CHambers ,
      who will be better if both our talent are equal? NO THEY ARE NOT APPLES AND ORANGES...
      Gregs snare technique is actually ok, not bad...infact that is probably what fooled Cathy Rich...besides romantic chemistry....GPs time is off...its Rock slow on the backside...
      he can tighten up much more, if he humbles himself and just plays to a jazz bassist 2 and 4....then records it, and finds out he is dragging or on the backside...
      then hopefully the jazz pro bassist will tell him, he needs to push....get that hihat, on or ahead of the bass....just practice the hihat...tch, tch, tch tch tch....then just fast quarters on the ride 1.2.3.4, 1.2.3.4. with an occasional ding, dock a ding....ding ding ding ding ding dock a ding ding ding...
      and record...you think you are playing awesome , until you listen back to your recording...Buddys Schtick...is POCKET...its not because hes fast....its not because he has snare chops....its not because he is jazzy, its not because of anything but FAT POCKET....his slow 16th notes ARE MONEY because they are PURE POCKET...his triplets are MONEY because he is PURE FAT POCKET TIME... Greg has to be a PURE POCKET FAT TIME KEEPER.

    • @Globalised
      @Globalised 7 лет назад +3

      A lot of what you say doesn't make sense, this "metronome hands" theory you came up with can't be a bad thing. Not all jazz players rush the time, it's good that you worked with all those people and have that knowledge but I am a professional jazz drummer and I'm telling you he's in time. It's not a complicated fact his ghost and accented notes are in the right places. That's your opinion certainly not a fact

    • @zerekx
      @zerekx 6 лет назад +4

      He's playing to a pre recorded track gents. Gregs hands are GREAT and timing when they play live is pretty damn good. All the vendetta stuff against GP just because he was selected to fill in for the greatest drummer in the world that ever lived - NO one could fill those shoes, not BigBill, not Dick Cully, Not Roger Berg so on and so forth. Pretty sure Greg would be the first one to admit that he's no Buddy...

    I've read some of the comments and I will try to stay neutral here. As a drummer I do respect the stick time Mr Greg has put in. However my first thoughts have always been a rock drummer trying to play jazz. I don't mean that to offend it's just that some guys are great players and some guys play great. Greg plays great. He plays jazz but I do not believe he truly is a jazz player. Again I mean that with all respect. Sometimes it's not fair to make comparisons.Try to leave a little room for understanding he's doing his best to play Buddy's charts and as we all know, there is no one that can play them like buddy did!!

    Every drummer has their own style..Gregg has his…so what ..?
    Gene Krupa was very different to Buddy, as was every great drummer.
    People make fun of Gregg’s unusual hair.
    Many made fun of Buddy’s many wigs, as well, but concentrated on his drumming.

    Greg if you read the message below, I want you to know that I wrote it to another person/drummer talking badly about you. I want you to take to heart what I wrote about you. I personally don't want you to lose Cathy or be bad mouthed behind your back forever because you are just about my Favorite New Drummer Because you sound closer to Buddy that any other drummer that I have ever heard. You seem sincere but, you have to be respectful of his Big Band Players. Just watch the video that you and Dave Weckl played at Ronnie Scott's and look at the faces on the musicians and then look at them after Dave played with them. I'm a nobody, but even a nobody can be right once. You can be wrong a million times but you only have to be right ONCE... Please listen to me as a brother who really loves and cares for you. I've been playing since the 80's as a rock drummer and I will never be able to play like you because I'm 67 and although I have the will and talent, I can't afford to live next door to Ted Mackenzie and get lessons 3 times a week to play like Buddy, which is my lives dream. YOU CAN, so please listen to my message to you with my heart brother. Sincerely Joseph.

    his chops are not bad, its just it sounds like there is a delay...and there is definitely NOT a pure jazz feel...this band has a BIG JAZZ feel....i can explain it ...there is a hair difference...jazz is pushed...no back beat feel...and also more technical...no space just tight articulation...

    Too much for me! I heard about this guy and I've watched a few RUclips videos of him but I just can't get into his busy Style. I have been playing for over 40 years, and other than a beginner drummer, I think this is the only drummer that I just can't listen to.

    Lotsa negative comments here.. Few drummers are as good as Buddy Rich was. Buddy was a NATURAL TALENT. One of those people BORN to play drums. Greg Potter? I'd never heard of the guy, but...he plays much better than I do, and I'll leave it there.

      Hard hitting arms flailing rock drummer Gregg Potter has never and will never adapt to the subtleties of jazz and only plays the simple rock BR charts like Dancing Men and Birdand, you will never here West Side Story or Channel One because he can't play it .

    Simple explanation: passive-aggressive father-daughter relationship here. Daddy was absent her whole life, she gets back by marrying this guy and giving him lifetime tenure....he takes the bait and glory and is a drumming used car salesman. Not interested in drumming history or preservation, probably never listens to his father-in-law...my gosh she marries two drummers, Steve Arnold and now Potter...talk about living in Daddy's shadow.

    Big Swing Face, You're right about what you said about Buddy that he
    didn't want his band to be a ghost band, but, in a way, you are wrong
    about Greg Potter because,,,Greg practices Buddy's tunes very close in
    sound and talent but when he plays live, he seems to be having to much
    fun playing because he is very gifted and he plays over the band too
    much. I watched him for the first time last week and he was even playing
    too much when the sax players were soloing. That's RUDE, but I don't
    think that he thinks about that when he's playing. Cathy or someone like
    me, " IF I WAS THERE" Needs to tell him that so he doesn't get hated
    instead of loved. I watched the musicians face when he played and I
    watched their faces when Dave Weckl played and it was day and night.
    Dave played his own style but played with the utmost respect for the
    band and their expressions showed with smiles of relief and
    appreciation. That's the sad part about Greg's playing. Greg sounds as
    close to Buddy as I've heard from ANY DRUMMER TO THIS DAY. He needs to
    be told diplomatically or it will not end well for him and that would be
    a shame. With that being said. I love his playing ability. I wish that I
    had it but my days are over. I'm 67 now and have a brand new 1972
    Slingerland Buddy Set with all pretty new Paiste Giant Beat Cymbals but I
    don't have Greg's gift. What a shame.. Maybe in the Afterlife with
    Jesus if it is allowed.

    This is so difficult. Yes he can drum. Yes he has speed. Yes he has a command of rudiments. BUT in every other way his drumming sucks because his feel and dynamics are so poor. Many many less technically able drummers are far more musical. His playing should be a big eye opener as to what not to do. Very sad. :-(

    • @BigBillLucas
      @BigBillLucas 8 лет назад +1

      +Gordon Kerr
      Thank you Gordon, you speak the complete truth.
      Basically Potter is a hard hitting all arms rock drummer who cannot or will not adapt to the intricate subtleties of Jazz, his playing is just far too loud and wild for the big band genre.
      To watch him smash hammer the crash cymbals with his flying arms breaks my heart.
      Put this guy back in a Heavy Rock band because that is were he belongs, don't you agree ?

    • @Gordonafloat
      @Gordonafloat 8 лет назад +1

      Absolutely but there are far more subtle rock players too. I have seen video of him try to play some Led Zep stuff and he can't hold a candle to John Bonham. Even rock drummers need dynamics and sadly Greg Potter has a very poor ability with light and shade. Such a pity.
