After 3 seasons of being filmed entirely on location in southern CA (near LA), the directors wanted a different "look". By that point that French "village" in Hollywood should have been nominated for an Emmy award.
They flew a production crew to France & filmed 90% of the outdoor scenes using local French actors, who in most cases didn't speak much (if any) English. Watch this episode closely & you'll see that you're unable to recognize any of the main actors in the distant outdoor scenes. The rest of the episode is filmed in the "village" in Hollywood.
By season #5 the studio couldn't justify the cost overruns filming in France & switched to the northern CA wine country for outdoor filming. Many (not all) of the season #5 episodes were filmed there. The episode "Ollie Joe" is the best example of this.
IMO this was an excellent TV series in the 1960s. Vic Morrow & Rick Jason must be rolling over in their graves with what's on TV now. That's why I don't own a TV, 90% of it is total crap these days.

"God's Little Acre" also starred, Robert Ryan, Tina Louise, Aldo Ray, Buddy Hackett. Earl Parker, "When a stunt-double was needed for Vic Morrow, it was usually Earl, who became so skilled at duplicating Vic's movement and mannerisms that he was Vic's stunt double for most of Vic's career."

It was Morrow's show. Jason was a movie star. Morrow was an actor

  • @TWS-pd5dc

Fair point about Morrow and Lord but the plot thread about Sgt Saunders always clashing with a fellow non-com specialist each week got a little redundant. Still fine actors like Lord, Marvin, Brand, Burke, et al could always make the show work.

  • @mspitzer33
    @mspitzer33 12 лет назад +3

I agree that Morrow more clearly carried the show. His character was more interesting and better developed. I don't have an opinion as to how Jason compares to Morrow as an actor. I do think that the writers could have done a better job of giving Jason a little more complex characterization.

Technical flaw: At 13:48 Little John drops the spool of wire in the river and it FLOATS downstream. Copper wire on a metal spool does not float.

    • @TheEvilDrR

It probably had enough air in the hollow of the spool to float for a short time.

@@herbertsusmann986 Nah. They could've just made sure they got a good shot of the splash when it went in. Maybe 3 seconds in the shot. I looked at the spools they were using, really small holes, fairly big cylinder, big enough to hold enough air to float for a second or two.

Actually, according to IMBD? concerning Combat!, morrow and Jason recieved exactly the same number of billings first; 78 each of the 156 episodes that aired.

  • @jameshoran8

Interesting story, the long shots are in France with stunt doubles for Morrow and Jason. The show offered them free rides to France to do the exterior filming in summer of 65 for several of the shows. Both said if they were not to be paid, they weren't going.

Turns out Jack Lord and Vic Morrow hated each other in real life. Word was they had done a movie together, I forget the name (GOD"s Little Acre?) and nearly came to blows. Might be a legend but those 2 were known to be difficult for directors and producers to work with. Still, they were 2 fine actors and played off each other well.

  • @sapphiretaurus

That was because the directors and producers didn't always have the right ideas. Jack and Vic were not the types to keep quiet if they disagreed and had better ideas for how to film a TV show or writing one. The directors and producers wanted their way all the time and were used to it, never being questioned by the actors, and when they were, they viewed these actors as being difficult.

LINESMAN what is the exact definition here. Wikipedia did not give me a clear answer. Just figured it is another word for SPECIALIST ( with just a basic training as a soldier ) isn the militaric use. - is this correct?

And as far as crossing rivers with wire...they needed a gun like a grenade launcher that could pull a string or an actual wire across the river when shot....

  • @bobmalack481

Dumb script weakness, and as Little John drops the wire reel in the river..'It slipped'..clumsy and stupid indeed for such a critical mission. I would of cried and clenched my fists if I did that..thats why I'm a Kirby guy..who lugs around a REAL B.A.R. on the set at 20 odd pounds. (of course with the trigger group deactivated for television) Robert at 67.
