the way it was going, I figured at the end the captain would say, oh, forget about it, after going through that. i think hanley might have had an accident in a real situation like that.
I grew up with combat on TV in black and white only as far as I can remember. Never missed an episode and all these brings back so many childhood memories and enjoyed every minute of the series.
Germans are shooting a US 50 cal. The wounds inflicted with a .50 are devastating....Very few people survive any wound from a .50 cal. I watched this series before I went to Vietnam with the 1st. Infantry. Loved the show.
Combat was the best television show ever made depicting the horrors of war. The acting was exemplary and the stories memorable. This is the best of the best, an incredible story of courage shown by GI's in the taking of a pointless hill in WWII.
Saunders' squad must have been the most decorated soldiers in the war. At least 20 purple hearts for each man throughout the series, not to mention multiple medals of honor and other assorted medals earned each week. lol love the show.

I must have seen a 100 episodes of this show and I must say this is one of the best shows or if not the best show ever produced. Great acting, great writing and well directed. And it shows the reality of war.
That's why this show was so good. It was more realistic than most shows. It didn't rely on unbelievable and pat endings where everyone's happy by episode's end. It shows that people are damaged, people panic and people die in war. There's very little romance, as so many shows and movies make war out to be. The great thing about this show is that it shows the relationships between people, those in the squad, between them and the enemy, and the few women they encounter, etc...
With out a doubt this was the BEST episode of combat ever made. I have seen most of them. They had a large part of my decision to go to war when most of the country was against the war in VN. Thanks soo much for posting this epi.
My favorite show as a kid and still holds its own against the latest productions even if the Germans are driving walker Bulldog and Pershing tanks and using In this episode a US 50 cal. Or thats what it looked to be. US soldiers used a air cooled 30 cal. One of My Uncles was A machine Gunner in Italy. His Gun was a 30 cal. Water cooled. Their other arm was the bolt action 03 Springfield . Another Uncle was a combat engineer. He carried a Garand M-1 they always wore combat suspenders to hold the ammo belt , bayonet , canteen up and carried as many cloth bandoliers as possible. Another Uncle was in the 11th Airborne and another In the 14th Armored as a Mechanic and motorcycle courier. He was awarded a Bronze Star for fixing a armored car while 88s were striking tree’s . Battleground accurately portrayed the mannerisms and speech. They used Fruit instead of pissed and outfit instead of unit, company etc. For example 275th Engineer’s for the Battalion. When that Battalion was in battle formation divided among the Three Rifle Regiments 289th , 290th , and 291st of the 75th Div. It would be squad , platoon , company then 289th Regimental Combat Team of the 75th infantry Division. My Father in Law who was in the 95th Division liked chewing cigars like James Whitmore in Battleground , even spoke like him. A friends Dad , a full blooded Apache who fought in Europe and Korea said the actors in war films were too clean and clean shaved. Full beards were not uncommon. My Uncle who fought in Italy said after fording freezing rivers in torrential rains , trying to stay warm in large mite infested brick oven’s that chicken’s had roosted in and otherwise living like farm animals for months without cleaning when they did come off the line for a shower the old uniforms were burned and new ones issued. When they took off their long underwear the bottoms of the legs were filled with dead skin and hair. Wives and Mother’s would never have allowed watching Combat if they showed what really happened to people in tanks and the smells . Also going number 2 is never shown, in the foxhole or when scared in the pants. I just got to rambling on cause I just get thinking about all the stories from so many I knew who are now gone and with them their experiences. My Paternal Grandfather fought and escaped capture at Adwa. He passed away when I was very Small. As a family we went on ride’s through the country in a station wagon and to drive in theatre’s. There were real WW2 half tracks parked along a road in a farmers field. Wearing real helmets and web belts My Brother and I would play Combat using the names of the character’s , giving and taking order’s. Those were the days when GI Joe first came to stores and a kid could get a fair facsimile of a 03 with a working bolt or pretty good cap guns that to us kids were as good as Roy Rodgers ,Gunsmoke And Bonanza. Anyone Who has been in a tank can tell you they are not as spacious as hollywood makes them seem and panoramic views are myth. For all the terror they struck in ground troops anyone,friend or foe in a tank was incredibly brave. At Wolf Gap Belgium, Richard Wiegand stepped onto the road just yards behind A Panther tank and knocked it out with a Bazooka . He was so close the blast killed and disfigured Him. Even a smart guy who kept His distance from tanks could get killed by parts ,gravel and mud when one struck a mine so it was good to avoid being close to them. A tank running over a mine in a field and losing track links or parts like sprocket’s , rollers suspension parts etc. could cause fatal casualties 50 yards and more away. In Italy My Uncle was wounded in a leg by bits of Metal from such a explosion , He was later able to return to duty after hospitalization. A man only 10-15 yards away was killed by mud gravel and shrapnel imbedded all over His frontal torso. Genitals were not spared. In not one war film even today have I seen the Atrocities committed by SS Troops upon civilians , US Prisoner’s and other German Soldiers that My Uncle who was in the 289th of the 75th described. He was lucky as one who did reconnaissance and minesweeping in darkness to open avenues of advance for infantry assaults through minefields to be in every action from places like Grandmenil , the Colmar Pocket and Rhine to the very end without being wounded. He loved Deer and bird hunting but would not go where there was snow. He talked of the many places they went through . He mentioned seeing dead Americans who had been bound hand and foot with Bayoneted Rifles shoved up their rectums like skewer’s. SS men and German Machine Gunner’s and Snipers were lucky if they survived being captured. After a sharp fight where men were cut in two by German Guns that had a much higher cyclical rate of fire than the American , prisoner’s were treated roughly , beaten and stripped of jackets and shirts that could hide shoulder padding that identified machine gunners. In this episode the troops are too bunched up and advance in a fashion that is close to being line abreast, giving enemy gunners easy pickings for multiple kills. Advancing well spread out in echelon gave troops advancing over undulating terrain split seconds to go to ground , thereby reducing exposure. If the Enemy opened fire on the middle of a formation advancing over a rise both those in front and rear had a greater chance of returning fire or evasive actions. Machine gunners did not always engage the enemy in direct line of sight either. Many times at night dropping harassing fire on crossroads and avenues of advance and supply concealed behind Hills in defilade. Some how My editing and addition was lost so no further comments I guess I am too long Winded so to speak .
Vic Morrow was a great Director, as well as a great actor. One of my favorites, even though his life was so sadly cut short. This episode ranks among the top battle and war films. Like Pork Chop Hill, and Hamburger Hill, from two later wars. Showing what soldiers go through and doing their duty. Makes me even more proud to be an American 👍☝️🌄
The best of the combat series. Anticipated and talked about by almost all my schoolmates . Why was it cancelled in the Philippines? Rumors upon lobby by the German embassy.
One thing I have always noticed about this show is that in a fire fight they always seemed to have an inexhaustible supply of ammunition with them! Never sparingly used up their ammunition.

Of all of the episodes of COMBAT, this one was one of THE hardest ones to watch....The American Soldier giving it every GD thing he had....It was heartbreaking....
A masterful job of directing by Vic Morrow. In this episode, Saunders takes a step back and allow the viewers to examine the psyche of each squad member. The most poignant part is when Hanley orders Kirby to come down off the hill. Kirby tells Hanley as he points to the other squad member who are laying there dead that these guys can't come down, that they died for nothing.
Best episode(s) of the 5 seasons, IMO. I've recently rewatched all the episodes in order and noticed that those that Vic Morrow directed are some of the best.
Vic Morrow was a great actor...sadly we lost him in an unfortunate accident that took him on the set of "THE TWILIGHT ZONE" .... He will always be remembered as one of the GREATS!!!
He's my favorite. I love everything he's in. Having said that I refuse to watch "Humanoids from the Deep." He did it as a favor for his friend Roger Corman.

I've seen all episodes of Combat at least once. This double episode is the single best one. Kirby's plaintive and anguished speech starting @1:20:27 speaks to the cost and futility of war. The combat scenes are among the most realistic in the entire catalog, too; unlike those where Saunders fires 600 rounds from his Thompson without ever having to reload. 🙄
This is still the best combat episode. Yes, I wish they would’ve used MG 42s throughout the series especially this one. I think the audience would’ve been blown away by how fast those guns were firing.

They got a lot of extras for this episode.The pyrotechnic and squib guys were busy on that one as well. You can see where Spielberg got some of his steadycam work from.
This episode reminds me of the Gregory Peck movie "Pork Chop Hill" [1958] - a small number of men asked to do a difficult job with insufficient support.

Tips for the opening advance up the hill: there was clearly a cement pillbox on the top. Hit it with artillery first? Have a sniper team positioned to watch it and fire on any activity? Have pre-planned artillery at least hit it with smoke if/when it fires? Have extra smoke grenades for the troops to throw and then flank or charge the position? Get that bazooka to fire on the pillbox? Go for flanking maneuvers? Bug out immediately, hit it with artillery and wait for armor to take the fortress out?
11:40 Battalion artillery was tied up on other missions, even 81mm mortar smoke. Bummer. Could have company 60mm light mortars even though the Lt. wanted heavies.
The writers and Vic Morrow brought to life exactly what Stephen Crane wrote about in the last two Chapters in his Novel "The Red Badge of Courage" Great job done on this episode.
Great episode directed by Vic Morrow with outstanding performance by Rick Jason. Only complaint is the Germans wouldn’t be using an American .50 caliber heavy machine gun.
One of My Uncle’s was a Machine Gunner 168th Regiment 34th Infantry Div. From the time they landed in Italy to the end of the War. The way the men are shown advancing in pretty much line abreast bunched groups and behind tanks in open often heavily mined terrain is not wise . They would all be dead. The Germans had very fast firing Machine Guns that could cut a man in half. Machine Gunners used their 03 rifles to shoot at more solitary targets as from the moment of firing counter fire and Mortar fire would necessitate moving the position. That consisted of the barrel jacketed water cooled gun , tripod , water can, and ammo. Overheating barrels meant constant changing . Spare were carried and could be swapped while in combat but not as easily as the Germans could. Their guns were faster but also required the changes an lots of ammo that had to be brought up to them and moved. Infantry well spread out using Semi auto Garand M-1 Rifles and BAR’s could concentrate fire from widespread positions that could afford opportunities for outflanking and mortar fire. Being on the defensive had the Advantage of setting up interconnecting fields of fire AKA mutually Supporting Positions. Advancing on those could be tricky in unfamiliar terrain. Being able to move fast and take advantage of the slightest depressions for cover in open areas was key to defeating them. All the while scared . 99% luck and 1% training.
And the recuperative powers of these guys. Injured severely one week and back as good as ever the next. They regulars were also quite adept at diagnosing their own wounds. How is it? "Just a scratch" or "It's pretty bad". Of course, the Germans "Krouts" were even better at healing. I saw the same soldier get killed three weeks in a row. Wow! Hard to believe they lost the war.
I remember the episode where they executed a german pow, a war crime. I talked with a ww2 vet who buried the dead, he said he found lots of germans lined up and executed by GI’s. These episodes delt with the horrible reality of war.
I LIVED this series, in my early teens, with Vic Morrow as my "leader" of all things good, then! I had my "forrest", to play out all the combat scenarios, with my friends, in rural Jenkintown, PA! Amazing memories of this series, & Vic Morrow, more than any other actor, which led to a disgusting, wrongful death, in 1982, which I consider, nothing LESS than negligent homicide!! I was transfixed to my tv @ 12 y/o. This show, was everything to me as I entered a military school, @ 13 y/o, and was indoctrinated into the Vietnam propaganda for 5 years, circa, 1963! What I have, as a problem, now at 66, is, WHERE were the grenade launchers, bazooka's, & in place machine guns, during this battle? They were ALL existing at that time, and with a US contingency as large as that, in this episode, WHY WERE THEY NOT used? I didn't know any different, then, but now, it seems so odd. Funny as it may sound, but, these episodes of Combat!, ARE, a "warm & fuzzy" friend, from the past!! I survived youth!
I remember this so well. Rural Michigan was our battleground with wooden guns crafted in dad's basement or just a good stick that resembled a gun. Pinecones for grenades too. Even had a medic with an upsidedown Stohs bottle with a string for an IV running with us. What a great show and indeed this is one of the BEST episodes.
I Don't know what to Say 😃😃🤔 Honestly about This Series. Except it was Terrific & the Actor's we're Phenomenal. For recall Sake Rick Jason the Lt. As I Really don't Think 🤔🤔 back now, that l was. So when I First saw this Series. IT was already Reruns of the Original Season's after Syndication I'm pretty sure. Well anyways for my Young Mind & Ferver of War Nostalgia. The Series' Combat, was My Favorite, plus I of Course wasn't at all Aware of it's Significants at that Time. Looking Back now, Boy was it some Outstanding Programing & Writing for the Time. Too Bad we Can't see more Current Era, Examples of those kinds of TV or Hollywood Productions. Hmmm 🤔 I'm thinking again 🤣😂 that the Costs are just too Astronomical too Even justify trying in Today's Modern WORLD. Alas it's Probably Best anyways. After a sharp fight where men were cut in two by German Guns that had a much higher cyclical rate of fire than the American , prisoner’s were treated roughly , beaten and stripped of jackets and shirts that could hide shoulder padding that identified machine gunners. In this episode the troops are too bunched up and advance in a fashion that is close to being line abreast, giving enemy gunners easy pickings for multiple kills. Advancing well spread out in echelon gave troops advancing over undulating terrain split seconds to go to ground , thereby reducing exposure. If the Enemy opened fire on the middle of a formation advancing over a rise both those in front and rear had a greater chance of returning fire or evasive actions. Machine gunners did not always engage the enemy in direct line of sight either. Many times at night dropping harassing fire on crossroads and avenues of advance and supply concealed behind Hills in defilade. Some how My editing and addition was lost so no further comments I guess I am too long Winded so to speak .

One thing I have always noticed about this show is that in a fire fight they always seemed to have an inexhaustible supply of ammunition with them! Never sparingly used up their ammunition.

Kirby put in a great performance as an actor.
A masterful job of directing by Vic Morrow. In this episode, Saunders takes a step back and allow the viewers to examine the psyche of each squad member. The most poignant part is when Hanley orders Kirby to come down off the hill. Kirby tells Hanley as he points to the other squad member who are laying there dead that these guys can't come down, that they died for nothing.

Vic Morrow was a great actor...sadly we lost him in an unfortunate accident that took him on the set of "THE TWILIGHT ZONE" .... He will always be remembered as one of the GREATS!!!
He's my favorite. I love everything he's in. Having said that I refuse to watch "Humanoids from the Deep." He did it as a favor for his friend Roger Corman.
A brother of his lived next to me on an Army Base, good people; a great loss for all of us.

I've seen all episodes of Combat at least once. This double episode is the single best one. Kirby's plaintive and anguished speech starting @1:20:27 speaks to the cost and futility of war. The combat scenes are among the most realistic in the entire catalog, too; unlike those where Saunders fires 600 rounds from his Thompson without ever having to reload. 🙄

This episode is ... Words fail ... Except this was decades before 'Saving Private Ryan ' , and much closer in time to the events described .
This is still the best combat episode. Yes, I wish they would’ve used MG 42s throughout the series especially this one. I think the audience would’ve been blown away by how fast those guns were firing.

They got a lot of extras for this episode.The pyrotechnic and squib guys were busy on that one as well. You can see where Spielberg got some of his steadycam work from.
But hated the M2 .50cal in the bunker. They really couldn't get an MG42?
Tactically, the frontal assault uphill was a major blunder. The bunker(s) should have been pinpointed and destroyed by artillery before.

Tips for the opening advance up the hill: there was clearly a cement pillbox on the top. Hit it with artillery first? Have a sniper team positioned to watch it and fire on any activity? Have pre-planned artillery at least hit it with smoke if/when it fires? Have extra smoke grenades for the troops to throw and then flank or charge the position? Get that bazooka to fire on the pillbox? Go for flanking maneuvers? Bug out immediately, hit it with artillery and wait for armor to take the fortress out?
11:40 Battalion artillery was tied up on other missions, even 81mm mortar smoke. Bummer. Could have company 60mm light mortars even though the Lt. wanted heavies.
+Bat Guano then you wait for it to become available or take them under cover of darkness. better than advancing over open ground in broad daylight

I was amazed to learn that only one of 50 bullets fired hits it's mark in war,
One of My Uncle’s was a Machine Gunner 168th Regiment 34th Infantry Div. From the time they landed in Italy to the end of the War. The way the men are shown advancing in pretty much line abreast bunched groups and behind tanks in open often heavily mined terrain is not wise . They would all be dead. The Germans had very fast firing Machine Guns that could cut a man in half. Machine Gunners used their 03 rifles to shoot at more solitary targets as from the moment of firing counter fire and Mortar fire would necessitate moving the position. That consisted of the barrel jacketed water cooled gun , tripod , water can, and ammo. Overheating barrels meant constant changing . Spare were carried and could be swapped while in combat but not as easily as the Germans could. Their guns were faster but also required the changes an lots of ammo that had to be brought up to them and moved. Infantry well spread out using Semi auto Garand M-1 Rifles and BAR’s could concentrate fire from widespread positions that could afford opportunities for outflanking and mortar fire. Being on the defensive had the Advantage of setting up interconnecting fields of fire AKA mutually Supporting Positions. Advancing on those could be tricky in unfamiliar terrain. Being able to move fast and take advantage of the slightest depressions for cover in open areas was key to defeating them. All the while scared . 99% luck and 1% training.
Nice movie.. What more to say.. Only those who have seen those days can actually understand

And the recuperative powers of these guys. Injured severely one week and back as good as ever the next. They regulars were also quite adept at diagnosing their own wounds. How is it? "Just a scratch" or "It's pretty bad". Of course, the Germans "Krouts" were even better at healing. I saw the same soldier get killed three weeks in a row. Wow! Hard to believe they lost the war.
the germans killed 10 Russians per one german and 3 allies per 1 german and lost the war.
I remember the episode where they executed a german pow, a war crime. I talked with a ww2 vet who buried the dead, he said he found lots of germans lined up and executed by GI’s.
These episodes delt with the horrible reality of war.

I LIVED this series, in my early teens, with Vic Morrow as my "leader" of all things good, then! I had my "forrest", to play out all the combat scenarios, with my friends, in rural Jenkintown, PA! Amazing memories of this series, & Vic Morrow, more than any other actor, which led to a disgusting, wrongful death, in 1982, which I consider, nothing LESS than negligent homicide!! I was transfixed to my tv @ 12 y/o. This show, was everything to me as I entered a military school, @ 13 y/o, and was indoctrinated into the Vietnam propaganda for 5 years, circa, 1963!
What I have, as a problem, now at 66, is, WHERE were the grenade launchers, bazooka's, & in place machine guns, during this battle? They were ALL existing at that time, and with a US contingency as large as that, in this episode, WHY WERE THEY NOT used? I didn't know any different, then, but now, it seems so odd. Funny as it may sound, but, these episodes of Combat!, ARE, a "warm & fuzzy" friend, from the past!! I survived youth!
I remember this so well. Rural Michigan was our battleground with wooden guns crafted in dad's basement or just a good stick that resembled a gun. Pinecones for grenades too. Even had a medic with an upsidedown Stohs bottle with a string for an IV running with us. What a great show and indeed this is one of the BEST episodes.

So when I First saw this Series. IT was already Reruns of the Original Season's after Syndication I'm pretty sure. Well anyways for my Young Mind & Ferver of War Nostalgia. The Series' Combat, was My Favorite, plus I of Course wasn't at all Aware of it's Significants at that Time.
Looking Back now, Boy was it some Outstanding Programing & Writing for the Time. Too Bad we Can't see more Current Era, Examples of those kinds of TV or Hollywood Productions. Hmmm 🤔 I'm thinking again 🤣😂 that the Costs are just too Astronomical too Even justify trying in Today's Modern WORLD. Alas it's Probably Best anyways.
