Episode 48
Gauntlet may seem like one of the most impossible games for the NES, but it can be beaten! There are 100 rooms to explore, and a vicious three headed hydra to slay! If you enjoy games like the Legend of Zelda, you owe it to yourself to check out Gauntlet!
One of the great things about Gauntlet is that it allows two player cooperative play! The game may be tough, but you don't have to tackle it alone.
Before it was on the NES, Gauntlet was a very successful arcade game! It was created by Ed Logg, who had a hand in making some of the most famous arcade games of all time, including Centipede, Super Breakout, and Asteroids!
So how did Gauntlet become such a big hit for Atari? How was it changed for the home console release, and what's going on with the weird black cartridge from Tengen that it sometimes appears on? In today's episode we'll learn all of that, then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
Strategies for completing ALL 100 ROOMS! A few of them should be avoided, but we'll definitely check out all 100!
The best way to navigate through the gauntlet! Don't miss anything important!
How to collect TONS OF TREASURE and power up early!
Which character is the best, and why?
Detailed MAPS for EVERY ROOM with labeled exits!
Which WEAPONS AND ITEMS are good, and which should be avoided!
SHORTCUTS to skip through to the later levels!
Where to find EVERY CLUE, and what to do if you miss any!
The FASTEST way to get ALL FIVE UPGRADES!
How to avoid the PASSWORD BUG - Make sure you'll be able to continue and save!
Understanding how to LEVEL UP your hero!
Where to find TONS of KEYS and BOMB POTIONS! Always have a full supply!
The best route through VOLCANA - Finally find the Vault of Morak!
How to defeat the dreaded three headed hydra, guardian of the Sacred Orb... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

I've waited 30 years to see these hints. This is the epitome of a Nintendo hard game.
Made by Atari . Tengen
Are we not gonna talk about how he casually finished the game with just SIX HEALTH LEFT? That was a clutch run, it's amazing how mean those final few level exits can be.
That was crazy! I've never seen anybody beat Gauntlet before. I really appreciate the amount of work that went into this episode, covering all 100 rooms.
For sure. I beat the adventure/ strategy games as a kid- Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus, ect- but this 1 was so frustrating to my 11 yr old self I stopped playing it.
These games are hard indeed
I witnessed my Grandma beat Gauntlet before. She was a Master NES'er.
She also beat Fester's Quest, Metroid, Adventure Island, The Legend of Zelda, and Deadly Towers.
She also played a mean game of Paperboy.
@@EbuCallinav Your grandma is awesome!
_A_ Gauntlet, or just this one?
You have no clue what this video means to me. My Step-Brother & I spent countless hours trying to beat this game. We came to a level where we could not find an exit. Since I'm super OCD about finishing whatever I've started, you've allowed me to finally go back and beat this Bastard of a game.
That's awesome, man! This is by far one of the hardest games I've covered on the channel. Ninja Gaiden is way easier.
I love the layout of this video. The minimap on one side, video on the other and the choice stock photo on the bottom.
Yeah
Agreed, he really perfected this model.
The map cropping could have heen done better, some of the rooms were too wide for the space, so he just centered it, leaving the edges off.
I remember playing with my dad on the NES and arcade as a kid. I now have a arcade unit in my home and I love it.
Wow you have an arcade version in your home. Now I have a new fantasy.
@@Spagyr me too
Probably the most informative video on this game out ever made, the length of research you put into these to share with the viewers never fails to amaze me.
this continues to be one of the best long form game playthrough channels on youtube. the gameplay is solid, the commentary is top notch and provides context for the game at the beginning, and the video layout often (as in this video) provides extra information like maps or details about items or whatever. just really super good, keep it up!
Yea this channel is solid.
Thanks for making this.
Years ago, before I owned an NES myself, I could only play a couple times each year when visiting my aunt's house. My aunt had an adopted teenage son who was older than me, and sort of my step-cousin. He was one of those kids that hung around outside with his friends much more than inside, but he did have an NES in the basement. There were only like three games--Adventure Island, Double Dragon, and Gauntlet. I remember plugging this one in and hearing the music, and thinking how great it sounded with its harpsichord-like tones and bells. I loved Questor because he moved the fastest. I never got very far, but when I think of this game I can still smell the carpet in my aunt's basement and the smell of Thanksgiving dinner as it cooked slowly over the hours and I played until I was called upstairs for food.
Then I'd eat, then take my plate back to the basement and play some more!
My cousins had Double dragon, Mario 2 and Mike Tyson’s Punchout. I have the same nostalgia of playing them only during holidays, and they are my favourite NES games now, probably because I didn’t own them then.
This is hands down the best channel on RUclips. True gaming, not much opinionated banter. Just solid how-tos. You’ve helped me finally complete some old games I’ve never beaten, and your level of detail and hours of hard work are very much appreciated.
I never finished this game in the day. When I got to levels with the invisible walls, that was pretty much as far as I could go before getting killed.
You got much farther than I ever did. I just remember discovering a death and running away from him in the arcade. No idea about bomb potions at all.
Sometimes I come here for the guide, and other times, I'm mainly here for the history. Great job on doing both so well
"If you're by yourself, choose the elf!"
~Johnny Cochrane probably
It’s true ‘cause it rhymes.
*"With elves.... watch yourselves!"*
Benjamin garrison
That's Johnny's second most popular quote.
The other being the Chewbacca Defense.
Chewbacca is a wookie from Endor.
Head explodes
Spent so much time playing this in my childhood. Tough as nails. Respect ✊🏽
Never played this game but always love your reviews before the game play, and the actual gameplay itself.
Wow, absolutely incredible!!!!! NEVER knew there was an ending!!!! I just thought it looped!
Mad Respect ✊🏻 my man!
My man, this shows exceptional dedication to your craft and your fan base. I did not even know how much I wanted to see this old game that I loved and left long ago.. Your solid strategy commentary keeps me interested after all those hours spent trying on my own.
Some of the traps in Gauntlet are just downright brutal! A guide like this one will be of huge help for those that one to complete this one!
I found your channel several months ago and because of you I have actually beaten for the first time several of my original NES cartridges. Now I am going to try this one out. Can't wait!
Allllllllllright! It's officially Saturday. Very excited for this one--we could certainly benefit from learning your expert strats for this challenging classic.
Man, I love these videos.
Down the street from my house was a 7-Eleven, it had 3 arcade cabinets. One was Gauntlet. I was fascinated by it as a kid. We'd walk down during the summer to get a Slurpee and drop a quarter or two. When it was ported to the NES I would rent it and never got far because I didn't understand it. Now, thanks to you I can finally end this mayhem!
I've been waiting for this one. The hardest NES game, even with passwords, I have never beaten.
Silver surfer harder
Me too it's a true challenge. But I keep on playing 🙂
@@FFF-ic2fq No, Silver Surfer is just cheep.
Ninja Gaiden is pretty hard too.
Holy Diver is considered to be the hardest NES game ever. It makes Ninja Gaiden look like 'Mario teaches typing'.
If you're by yourself, choose the elf!! 😂 archer is always my go-to in first runs of any RPG/MMO
I played Gauntlet Dark Legacy for the GameCube as a kid, my friends and I were hooked on it something fierce
The amount of work you put into this video shows. Absolutely amazing.
I love the style of your videos, they feel like they could've been made in the 90s and shown on late night UK television for drunk university students getting home from the pub.
The details and time and energy you put in making this video... showing all maps in details. Hats off to you. You are awesome, sir!
I can't even imagine the amount of time and research that went into beating this game, i've always heard the classic Gauntlet games have no ending, as a kid when me and my friends used to play Gauntlet 2 on nes i always purposely walked into those ghosts because i thought they were some kind of beneficial items i was collecting. lol wasn't till i got older i learned they were actually enemies.
I loved playing as the elf. My brother would play as the warrior. We used to argue about which way to go sometimes. While he would refuse to help me fight the monsters I would run ahead and eat all the food as retaliation. Fun times.
If you pause the game, it also removes a shot from the screen. This comes in handy if a stray shot is headed towards a bomb or food item. The super shot destroys doors, treasure, and items so be very careful when shooting and use the pause trick in case you mess up.
The definitive, most comprehensive walk through video ever done for the NES Gauntlet.
Oh man! This game DESTROYED me. So so good though! Thanks for playing this!
This game (and Dandy and Tutankham) were the OG Diablo/ Action Rpgs from the time!
I LOVED playing Gauntlet 2 with my twin brother on the NES... Wonderful memories!
Gauntlet; one of the best franchises for the arcades, and a great co-op experience for family and friends at home. Thank you Atari and Midway Games. And thank you UCBVG for the trip down memory lane.
I was the oldest sibling and my younger siblings used to watch me play these games as a kid since I could usually beat them better than them. I feel like this channel is a chance for me to watch someone else play the games and, strangely, I would rather watch this than play the games myself.
This was such a massive game back in the day when I was young. I was delighted to find that they had remade it. Play a few hours each week :-)
Fav NES game of all time
Absolutely amazing! This is one of your finest videos in my mind! I've beaten almost all of the super hard NES games and yet this is one I never could figure out. I maybe made it like 40-50 floors into the game but I only found maybe one clue? The fact that there are trap rooms and even worse...ones that send you WAY BACK was utterly insane. I'm a little surprised Nintendo Power didn't release a full strategy guide of Gauntlet but it truly is a Nintendo Power game. Thank you for sharing this! You are the GOAT of NES walkthroughs! :)
An amazing watch. Can’t even believe it had an ending! Excellent work.
"As the late Johnny Cochran said: if you're by yourself, choose the elf."
Didn't expect that, lol. Got a good laugh out of me.
I can't believe you went to the lengths you did for this video. Like a lot of people, I didn't even know there was an ending in this game. This is one of the most dedicated, quality channels on RUclips, and it constantly delights my inner child. I want to personally say thank you, and you should be proud of your fantastic work.
Didn´t expect the game to be that complex (in sense where to go, what to do, etc.) It was enjoable guide :) The main screen with tips was nice touch!
WOW! JUST... WOW! Salute to you, Sir. I'm old enough to remember playing this in the arcade and on the NES. I could never figure out how to play, what things meant, or what to do to complete this game. All I can say is THANK YOU! The kid in me thoroughly enjoyed this, and the adult in me appreciated the effort it to took.
Yet another game I loved as a kid. Thank you again!
GAUNTLET! I loved the different ones they made on other consoles!
Thanks man ! And i really love the little back history of every games at the beginning
Ur the best!
Great stuff. The only Nes Gauntlet video I know of that visits and explains all 100 rooms. I did find one mistake at 30:20 The exit in plain sight takes you to level 18, not 8. They pull that kind of stuff later on, but not this early.
I never knew this game had an ending, I also thought it was endless.
So glad I found your channel, now all these crazy hard retro games don't seem so impossible anymore!
I feel like I never played this on NES. Definitely played it in the arcade. It has a weird quick nostalgic memory for me. Also, congrats man. You're making it. Early subscriber here. Keep it up.
Amazing work; very detailed. I have long considered making a guide for all 100 rooms. But never found the time. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this from start to end!
High quality and SUPERB videos. Thank you for completing my weekend.
The extra effort to include the mini maps was well worth it.
I was five when I first saw a Nieghboor play level one and use the secret exit. I loved it
I got a Nintendo for Christmas that year and got gauntlet that day. I dove into fantasy, What a huge influence for me
Since my childhood I always thought Gauntlet was a janky mess. Thank you for correcting me, I missed out on one hell of a game……
Man, I remember playing this game, and for me taking days to figure out how to get through the game and making it to the end without a guide. Good times!
I used to play this game all the time afterschool at my friends house. Such great times.
Woah, that diablo 2 D&D module was a perfect visual refence. Super deep cut. Now I HAVE to watch the next hour and fifty minutes.
This is THE best, most comprehensive Gauntlet guide I've ever seen. Absolutely love it, and subbing to the channel! If I had to have a complaint, I'd say the map images on the left could stand to have where you enter the room, but I assume they're taken straight from a strategy guide that didn't have them either.
Love this game! You are a legend sir! A legend!
Awesome a new UCBVG video, these are always fun and informative.I always loved this game,I could never beat this game,so this is a video I have been waiting for
I love the Nes version. The soundtrack is awesome!!
We owned this game and loved it, I never passed it but man I played this a ton. Whenever my friends came over this was one of the carts that got the most use out of the ones we owned.
This doesn't look like I remember it, I must have been playing the arcade game too much recently, I load that up on my pi when I play Gauntlet because I only play it with a group of people.
One of my faves as a kid. The classic black cart. Elf is love, Elf is life.
I didn't play much of either game on the NES, but I played Gauntlet Legends all the way through with three friends. Though I'd never say Gauntlet Legends is a top ten N64 game or anything, it was incredibly fun and makes me smile whenever I think of it.
I don't know how you keep doing this, but you keep releasing guides on games almost as soon as I start playing them. Please get out of my house, 10/10 video
What about Karnov for a future video? That game was maddening for me as a kid!
I got really weird goosebumps when I see you on the vault screen. I remember when I was a kid,wow
I remember playing this a few times back when arcades existed; I also thought it was endless. Never could get my hands on a copy of the NES game, which apparently did some nifty programming tricks to make it as faithful as possible to the arcade version.
Once again, this channel delivers the quality! A compact history of the game, in-depth, step-by-step guidance throughout the whole game, with just enough humor throughout to keep things lively with being overbearing.
More fantastic content as always. Thanks for making this !
I swear, you sound like the Bob Ross of video games. "Allllright, we're just gonna go on over here and etc etc etc." It's soothing. lol
Great review. It made me now want to go revisit it. This game actually has depth but I still feel some of the solutions are unfairly cryptic. Keep up the great work.
Another brilliant addition!
Excited to buy this game for nostalgic purposes. Good example of NES hard. I remember enjoying it, i don't remember it being so brutal. Hate getting old.
Wow, I bet a LOT of work went into making this video. Also, I'm so glad you mentioned the password bug right away. When I bought this cartridge about 5 years ago and started playing it, I ended up with a bugged password on my first playthrough and had no idea what was going on. I never beat the game though, so It's moving up on my to-do list thanks to this guide!
Can't even imagine the amount of work put on this video. Awesome!
Wow, man! That was pretty impressive. Love this game! Excellent video, sir! ☕️👌
I couldn't get myself to watch the entire video; not even close, but I think it is an amazing feat that you made instructions to get through the 100 levels. You got my like and subscription.
"If you're by yourself, choose the elf!"
You've made many excellent videos on your channel so far, UCBVG, but I feel like this one showcases your dedication to your channel's core concept and could easily garner you views for years to come.
I mean, it's Gauntlet for the NES! I would have never seen many of these rooms if not for this video. And if I'd seen room 96 as a child, I would have gone crazy!
1:21:54 "Room 69. Nice." You didn't disappoint us on that. Nice.
I love your channel. I remember thinking that this game was impossible back in the day.
I'm playing Soul of the Samurai PSX 1999 Konami listening to this. Used to have to go to Video Paradise and rent VHSs' for this kind of lowdown. Now just tune to RUclips. Pretty badass. Lucky.
I bought the Rampage arcade 1 up just to get the arcade version of gauntlet. I didnt think it was possible to beat lol... dang i love this channel i look forward to watching these videos every weekend.
Room 94... omg! ROFL!! Never noticed that layout when I played this as a kid.
This was a great episode! So glad you did this game. I had Gauntlet as a kid but don't think I ever realized how huge a game it is! Hope you do Gauntlet II at some point!
This is amazing. Thanks so much for the in depth review!
Who needs Nintendo Power? 😂
Absolutely love this channel. 100% perfect, wouldn't change a thing.
I used to have a players choice cabinet that had 10 nes games on it and one of those games was gauntlet. So many good memories
Another excellent vid! Always loved this game. Beat it once with my friend, but we never knew about the clues, but kept playing anyway. Took us years to figure out the clues were needed and the right paths to take through extensive note taking. (no great vids like this or internet to ask for solutions!) Might be time for me to solo this one now.
I love all of your videos. Liked, already subscribed, and commenting for the algorithm
Had a copy of the tengen version and bought it new at the flea market when I was a kid, a good game and hard.
Thanks for bringing back memories of an easier time.
In regards to honest and enjoyable old-school nostalgia gaming content: Between you, TopHatGamingMan and PatmanQC? I'm covered. Cheers mate, strong work. Oh, and say hello to the doggo for me.
Now we're definitely going Olde Skool
Gauntlet is the longest running arcade game that I have ever had the pleasure of playing
Love your videos. I was watching 'common sense soapbox' channel, totally different topic than you, but he said "what if I told you..." And I immediately thought of your videos! 😂 I'm sure I'm not the first to say, but you have a memorable catch phrase. Great branding.
this was relaxing to watch over 15 impromptu pause/episodes
Use To Spend My Paper Delivery Pay At Arcade On Gauntlet , It Was 4 Player Game , When By Myself I Would Always Be Wizard , Otherwise I Was Archer .. Never Did Get To End As I Stood Up On Huge Arcade Console .. SMFH , Now I Need To Invest In Gauntlet On A Game Console .. Or Just Watch RUclips Folks Which Is Like Cartoon Movie .. Enjoy Either Way From 70's Kid To Adult .. Blast From Dah Past .. Thanks 👍 4 Uploading This And Others To Watch And I Do Enjoy ..
This video just showed how absolutely insane this game is. People complain about older games being unfair, but this just takes the cake in absolutely being mean to the player. I guess because you can just use a password to come back it made them think it was ok?
I could not for the life of me imagine anyone figuring this out on their own before the internet.
You crazy bastard. Giving me hope I might actually be able to tackle this one...
I am curious as to how long it took you make this video. I feel bad for you and the struggle you had to go through just to be thorough and cover every room. You deserve a hug.
That Johnny Cochran joke was Gold!
I enjoyed the video, and it was pretty thorough.Would have also liked to see: what the hydra behavior looks like if you awake all 3 heads, what the bad end was, and whether endings were different for different characters.
All the hydras fire at you at the same time creating a bit of a bullet hell situation. The alternate ending if you escape without the magical egg lookin thing just gives you the game over screen. Nothing special. All characters have the same ending, just different sprite on the victory screen at the end.
