Nice video I am looking 106 mk, I plan to use it in the inter coastal water here in Nc, do u believe it’s a good choice or should I upgrade to 120? Note I am new to kayak fishing. Thanks
Thanks for the comparison. This is something I really wanted between the two kayaks. I have a Key West bay reef with an I pilot on the front and a regular Old Town kayak . It’s fun at times to fish backwaters with a kayak and I’m trying to decide which on best fits my needs. Very good comparison and helped me a lot
Excellent comparison between the two kayaks! Complete non biased breakdown on every feature, wow, very informative, really appreciated your input on these two kayaks. Thanks Alex, once again great job!
Your comparison is good but misses a few very important points between the two boats. First of all, these boats need to be compared relative to where they will be used the most. When you suggested the 120 as being a more “serious” fishing machine, I had to cough a little. That boat would be trouble here in south florida. If you do a side by side image comparison, the motor in the 120 hangs down TWICE the distance. It needs to because of the spot lock feature. Here in the everglades it would hit & catch everything! Whereas the 106 is tucked into the hull nicely….I have taken this boat in the thickest stuff imaginable with no issues whatsoever. With all that being said, here in the Everglades the 106 IS the “serious” fishing machine.
Man i wish the 120 had a throttle option on the side of it just like the 106 does, the 106 sounds more fun to drive, and thats whats holding me back from getting the 120 at the moment. but it really is about fishing in the end, so...maybe i will do the 120, The big appeal to me on that is the deck space to stand even with the motor up
I like to go fishing in the gulf for sharks. I often go out when there's rougher water. I used to use a Malibu X-factor for the last decade or so and last summer took it out in about 5 foot waves and put a 10 inch crack down the hull coming off the top of a wave that was cresting. While I won't be going out in that rough of water anymore I've been searching for another kayak that provides the stability. Do you think this kayak would handle 3 foot waves with a 6'5" 300LB guy?
I got the 106 I wanted shorter. (to fit in the SUV tailgate. I also don't want that motor head sticking up in the deck. Not into remove control. I use my kayak for shooting wildlife. The 106 with a sun shield top is IDEAL
Pretty much everything I see at stores is fishing based. At least they all have rod holders in them. I'm gonna just get a cheap paddle kayak for river floats at some point but your video popped up and now I'm just curious. I'm not a fisher, did a little in Boy Scouts but not my thing even though I kinda want to learn more and how to clean a fish just to have that survival skill in the pack pocket because shit happens. But I mostly just like floating down rivers with friends for now. So I was wondering are either of these or any other motorized kayaks that you know of that are decent at your typical float rivers where you are likely to bottom out and scrap in areas. Obviously the motor can be brought up but can the rudder to lifted to not scrap or rip off?
Been Old Town right Along from the beginning with the exception my first kayak that was an ocean trident. Same family Johnson Outdoors just a little different boat love my Predator PDL!
I’m thinking about getting a kayak so o don’t know much and doing as much research as possible to make sure I get the right one. I was wondering can pedals go where the trolling motors go?
My son and I have the sportsman’s 130 and 120 paddles kayaks. We bought in august, and got me back too fishing. We were able to get them because someone cancelled their order and we were in the store at the time. Dum luck. Enjoy thoroughly.
Is there a pwm option on the throttle ? or will the minkota draw max amps continuously? I can get my Lithium battery to last 3 days ( 8 hours per day ) having my pwm control the amp draw from the motor ( wired directly ) I like as much time on the lake without carrying another battery and having to recharge during the weekend.
I have been saving my brains out to buy the 106..lol. im a boat builder by trade and would love to have this yak. I live right on the Tennessee River and can only bank fish so this would be a God send..congrats..
Excellent video!! I’m currently waiting on my Old Town Sportsman 106 PDL ….of course EVERYTHING is on back ordered. Now, I’m wondering if I should change my order to the 106 AutoPilot? Any suggestions? …🤔
I've had the OT Sportsman 136, since the end of June and have not missed a weekend on the water yet. I was a little intimidated at first, because it is VERY heavy and I'm an old man, but I've really worked out a great system and feel I can haul it anywhere. I can completely rig and launch it from the trailer at any ramp, and I can do it quickly, so I don't piss off the boaters and other kayak folks. I'm glad to see your wife enjoying it. I hope to get my wife out on the water, when we get rid of some of the Texas, August, heat. I'd love to see the difference in your strategy from a boat outing to a kayak outing...How you look at the lake breakdown, strategy-wise, since the kayak can't cover as much water as easily as your boat.
I have the 106 MK and love it. I fish small lakes and rivers. The only time I find myself wishing I would have bought the 120 is when I want to stand. The 106 is plenty stable but it is almost impossible to maneuver while standing. Having that remote around my neck would be great when I want to stand and slowly move down a shore/weed line. If I was to buy the 120 I would use it for fishing lakes and use the 106 for the rivers.
im thinking of adding a 106 to my fleet. Ive been in my wifes once but diddnt spend a bunch of time in it. it seems like it will work for me as a quick grab and go boat. I love my 136 AP but sometimes its just too much
I've been floating in tubes for years and occasionally go on kayak but it's time to get a kayak for bigger lakes. More areas to fish increasing chances and moving location to location etc. Buying soon
Something weird I got the old town autopilot 120 with the minnkota , minnkota says I can’t install the ipilot link to the power drive but my friend and I took his ipilot link head to my new kayak and it works why would minnkota say it doesn’t work?
@@AlexRuddFishing Good to know. I had a Hobie PA 14 and had issues with water getting inside the hull when waves would come over the bow. I am considering one of these. You can’t beat spot lock technology.
Alex Rudd Fishing yea I was just curious man me and my wife have been considering relocating as well and I’ve thought about coming that way we just want a change and it’s beautiful down there
It’s a $60ish part to enable full blown i-pilot. That’s info straight from the engineering team - it’s not a option offered by Old Town but there is a way to do it.
Do you use deep cell marine batteries or lithium? If the latter, what kind do you use and how much do lithium batteries weigh? Were these kayaks provided to you for free from Old Town, if you don't mind my asking? Have you ever flipped either of these kayaks over intentionally or otherwise and how difficult was it to flip them back and get back in? This last question applies to your wife too and her kayak?
Battery question - ruclips.net/video/ftTSEhn8XQk/видео.html Yes the kayaks were free Never flipped one on purpose. I need to do that I think it would make a informative and funny video.
Dude no offince but thats not kyaking. Why dont you use your bass boat if you have to have all that to find fish?I think you would do better in a small jon boat with more storage.
You could ask yourself the same thing about a small jon boat. Especially if you ad a trolling motor, battery, small outboard, etc. Why not spend less and get a plug and play kayak that you can haul in the back of a truck, takes zero gas, can go places that a jon boat can't go.
Even though I don’t fish out of my kayak, I enjoy watching these videos; it’s something different I find interesting. We got a bass boat the day u filmed this and we’re gonna put in there but decided to somewhere else. I’ve seen you in the boat and the yak out there!
While they are good kayaks, I really don't like the layout. I want to be able to put my rod holders where I want (e.g. Bonafide). Also, at 6:40 - see that puddle of water on the deck in front of the seat, bad design. It shouldn't be holding water like that. I like what Wilderness Systems did with their Radar line. You have a base model that you paddle, then drop in a pedal drive, or swap out a motor all in the small kayak. I like that it is modular. They all should be doing what they are doing. The only thing I don't like is the small splash well in the WS Radar.
Both these kayaks have the same amount of gear track as a Bonafide that can be used to mount whatever. The puddle is because I pulled up the motor and then pulled the kayak up the bank at an angle. Yes, wilderness systems makes a badass kayak that lacks on storage. 😂👊🏻 I think I covered everything. Thanks as always for watching man.

Sat water fishing in SW FL I owned a 120 Auto and fished from it for over 3 year. I sold my Auto and bought the 106 Powered by Min Kota.
You represent old town kayaks well!
On the MinnKota can you have motor up while on the water? I am wondering if water would come up while launching with the motor up.
