    Buying a battery to power your ‪@OldTownCanoeKayak‬ Minn Kota or Autopilot kayak is one of the most important decisions you can make. Sealed acid vs lithium is the first choice your must make and then beyond that deciding which manufacturer can be daunting. In this video I describe the process I used in purchasing a battery for my AutoPilot 120 and how I came to that decision.
    I am not affiliated with any battery company.

    Nice video, but I think you missed one of the most important points that lithium has over lead acid; actual usable capacity. At high current draw (0.8C), a 100 AH lead acid battery will typically give you around 40% of that rating (40 AH). Most lithium batteries will give you about 90%. At low current draw, a lead acid will give a bit more, maybe up to 50% of capacity, but lithium typically will give you over 100% of rated capacity. So if you are using a 100 AH lead acid battery, you are typically getting between 40 and 50 AH of usage. Switching to lithium will give you nearly double the capacity if you go with the same AH rating.

    Very informative review! Thanks for the insight. I'm pushing a 14'6 Old Town Saranac canoe with a 45lb thrust. I wanted to buy a 150ah and I'm glad I didn't. That prism construction seems a little sketchy. I ended up ordering a 100ah direct from China. (also sketchy) lol. I also ordered a 16A charger from the same company. Total was $336 and a 60 day eta for arrival. Flying it over was almost $225 so I opted to wait a bit and learn as much as I can about LifePO4 before it arrives. Can I just unbox and connect my trolling motor to it (plug n play)? or do I need a PMW or add an inline fuse?

    Super informative video as usual Tyler! I don't see many people talking in detail about batteries for the AutoPilot series. One thing I'd mention is that lithium ion is different than lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) and their discharge properties are slightly different. LiFePO4 ends up being an even better option than lithium ion. I've got a 30Ah Amped battery for my Garmin 93sv for ice fishing and open water and it's been awesome. If I got an AutoPilot you bet your butt I'd be going for a 100Ah Amped battery. Looking forward to more videos from your AutoPilot!

    One comment on Customer Service... Asking your question "before" a sale is made" most often goes to sales, not customer service.
    To rate a companies Customer Service based on a sales inquiry can lead to a flawed result.
    I spent 20+ years in Customer Support. Telecom, Internet and E moto's. Pre sales questions very rarely made it to a CS rep.
    A better CS inquiry would be to send in a question directed to CS. Marketing and Sales answers may not always "align" with customer support replies.

    I’ve been watching a lot videos on Lithium batteries . I decided to picked up a 100 amp lipo at 26 lbs for my Old Town PDL 120 motor trolling. I did a test for 4 hours with a Minn Kotta 30lb thrust . I used the speed mostly from 3 -4 trolling through small ripple waves I probably get more speed on flat water. After 4 hours the voltage drop to 12.5 volts. I’m not sure what the voltage cut off battery. When I got home I measure it to be 13.2 volts. So likely I used only 40% . Checked out my short video. Thanks for the battery tracker info getting one too would definitely help😊

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  3 года назад

      With two brand new SLA batteries you are going to able to go further than on a single lithium. However, the performance of the SLA will decline more rapidly with time. Additionally rather than adding 30 lbs of weight to the kayak with a single battery you will be adding 120 lbs with 2 100 ah SLA.

    @ghost38901 3 года назад +5

    Thank you for the video. I like how you explained your reasoning for going lithium but I think you missed something important. If a lithium battery gets 3000 cycles and has a shelf life of 7 years, you would have to go through 429 cycles a year to get your money's worth out of that battery. If your lead acid battery gets 500 cycles and lasts 5 years you have to go through 100 cycles per year to get your money's worth. Obviously these aren't perfect numbers here but the point I'm trying to make is that if you are not a every day or every other day fisherman, I think you'll get more bang for your buck with a lead acid then lithium because you won't get all your money out of the lithium. There is a argument for weight, if 30 pounds is that important for you then lithium is the way to go. However, it's also annoying that you have to spend more money just to be able to check the charge of the lithium battery on the fly. Things to think about. Happy Fishing!

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  3 года назад

      You misconstrue the meaning of "shelf life". Shelf life is how long the battery can be stored without loss of charge. You can decades out of these batteries if you care for them.

    • @ghost38901
      @ghost38901 3 года назад +2

    So I know that this is old, but I've read few post and after some research here is what I got. The battery box is 10W x 17H x 11D where 17H I assume the biggest side and is L. I found 12v 277A Dakota that is 14.6L x 7.7W x 10.75H, where in this case H(high) is for D (deep). Yes it 65Lbs, but person like my self under 150lb soaking wet that's not an issue. Am I right with my calculations? Could that battery be used on that motor? It's Dakota group 31 I believe 12v277A. By the way, thank you for all the information you provide, helped my buy my 120PDL.

    You sold me on the Amped Outdoors but they’re out of stock. There is another issue though with 100ah batteries. In the future, would you be able to provide an update based on your knowledge of the actual internal dimensions of the Autopilot 120’s battery box? It appears that standard 100ah battery sizes are 12.06 x 6.8 x 8.8. Apparently, while lithium batteries may be lighter, they are not necessarily smaller in dimensions. The Battleborn dimensions are 12.75 X 6.875 X 9 in. (L x W x H). Dakota Lithium dimensions are 12.99 x 6.77 x 8.66. On the surface, it appears as if the Amped Outdoors is the only battery that may have fit into your Autopilot. I’m about to purchase an Autopilot 120, but I’m now on hold pending trying to find a 100ah battery that fits.

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  3 года назад

      As I stated in the video its very good at monitoring the voltage output on your battery which as it approaches 12 volt allows me to know when the battery is getting below the point it will power my motor. As for an absolute measure of remaining charge its okay but not great. There are other battery monitors out there that will measure exactly how many amps have been drawn off your battery but those also assume you have a 100% to begin with. Nothing is perfect.
